Spoiler
Interesting, that "Invitation" at the end sounds kinda like a happy ending kind of tune, then Birth after it sounds obviously terror based. So is the whole "fewf we made it, oh wait oops it's not dead" procedure of the Alien movies is happening?

I'm actually really liking what I hear... so far.

Nothing on the level of Jerry Goldsmith's score for Alien but that was to be expected.

Hammerpede is Goldenthal all over at times (and Hello Mommy actually). Actually quite enjoying the album so far, that said I've only sampled a handful of tracks.

I remember back in 2008, when I bought the soundtrack for The Dark Knight and hated it. I thought it was pretty poor, and very dull. Then I saw the film, and it completely changed my mind. The music fit the film so well. I was very impressed. Don't want a repeat of last time so I'm going to experience the score for the first time with the film, as opposed to listening to it without any images going along with it.

Friend from the past. Best track of the score. :D

Yup, it's a really nice little throwback and executed really well too. This soundtrack actually has more of the Alien films in it than I thought it would. Already I'm hearing Goldsmith's Alien theme and some pretty well executed Goldenthal style music.

I've just finish to listen the score. Really Great. A special mention for "Friend From The Past". The music fits perfectly with the Alien universe. And it will fit perfectly with the images of Prometheus.

I was very concerned about the score mainly because, apart from that recent clip which showcased a tiny bit of score, there wasn't really anything to go on.  But the parts of the soundtrack I listened to are solid and Friend from the Past is mesmerizing.

So, now there's nothing to be worried about in terms of the score.

Thank you  :)

I actually like most of what I hear... Marc obviously is playing around with 'organic' sounds and that 'mechanical thumping rythm' in some of the tracks, very prominent in Debris...

My favorites so far are Life and Engineers.

Well, the score was a major concern for me. But after listening to these tasters...... I'm actually pretty impressed! Weyland is absolutely beautiful (all thirty seconds of it ;) ).

But tip of the hat to Gregson-Williams, the track life is mesmerising  :'(

No need to thank me...Ron Swanston got this over an hour and a half before me, from a completely different source to mine.
Didn't know it at the time, just checked the 'soundtrack' thread to see if this was new info...didn't see it and decided this was BIG enough for it's OWN thread...

...only saw Ron's post some hours later on the 'Harry Gregson Williams contributing to the score.'-thread...

Agreed - waves zimmer frame at cheeky young whipper-snappers - will wait for the CD. Then again, I'll be clutching my sweaty ticket for 00:01 screening on June 1st in only two weeks, so I'm ready to be patient.

A lot of it is very reminiscent of the kind of industrial synth that Brad Fiedel did for the Terminator movies - I do like "David", though, as you really get a feel of a clockwork mechanism.

I'm not a fan of Streitenfeld but his score for Prometheus looks to be his best offering yet.  It seems that he has raised the bar for himself and even paid tribute to Alien at times.

Sounds ok in my opinion
Certainly doesnt blow me away but I dont hate it either

I know I'd like it a helluva lot more if instead of being mostly synthesized music MS utilised the lushness of a full living breathing philharmonic orchestra - same tracks but on real strings, real wind, woodwind, brass and percussion etc....

I know Fox could afford it no problem so why not ?

Nope...not doing anything for me, so far.  It is hard to form a good impression from such short clips...but I had a hard time discerning any evocative themes or motifs.

Edit:   I agree many of the tracks sound suitably atmospheric, and may fit well in the over-all context of the action and narrative...but I still like to hear 2 or more memorable themes/motifs.

Goldsmith's score for Alien was mostly "impressionistic" (especially when Scott and the editors incorporated lots of bits from his earlier score from "Freud")...nevertheless, the original "Main Title" theme, and "Hyper Sleep" were incredible, and these themes recurred in variations throughout the film.  And the musical cue during the reveal of the Space Jockey ("The Skeleton") was simply sublime.

Yup. What a lot of people don't grasp with "impressionistic", dissonant horror scores is that there's a difference between noise and artful noise. Goldsmith and Goldenthal's ALIEN scores? Artful noise. Even the most dissonant passages have the touch of genius to them. Most of the suspense cues for PROMETHEUS are just noise, though--aimless droning and flaccid passages for whispily-orchestrated strings. Not that that's a bad thing--it's functional and it works, but it's nowhere near the level of quality of the original scores.

That said, it is growing on me (Stockholm syndrome?!), especially HGW's contributions. The electronic aspects are going to date quickly, though.

"Friend from the Past" didn't do it for me.  Sounds like "Stars of the Lid" with lamer synth presets [and I love SotL and tons of shit like that].

Is it just me or is there a sample from the Aliens soundtrack on "Birth"?  The stringed bass sound about 1/3'd way through the clip.

I don't like it.  Sounds like Hans Zimmer.  Not my dig.  Too many strings for scifi.  I'd rather it be all abstract synth though, and most people hate that stuff.

Nops.
The only thing i used from it in my creature design was their "probosces" to make it feel like it have a noise, but it does not...Kind of "Doctor Plague" aspect.

It looks humanoid but at the same time it don't.

Could you cancel your pre-order? That's unless you'd much prefer a physical copy opposed to downloads.

It's a shame they won't be releasing this on Vinyl. I know there's next to zero demand for it these days but I still insist it adds an extra ingrediant to the listening experience.

By the way, that extra ingrediant is..

Shit....just listened to all eleven tracks that "Camerakid92" posted on YouTube.  I am completely underwhelmed.

I guess I come from the old school, of such artists like Goldsmith, Morricone, Williams, Barry, etc., in which there is actual melodic content in the various themes and leitmotives, comprising the film's score.

This is a bunch of ancillary, random, moody avant garde dissonance that I would never be able to listen to for enjoyment.  Just my opinion, of course.

Anyone else think the tracks #3 Engineers and #4 Life will be playing during the prologue?

#1 A Planet is definately the track playing when The Prometheus lands. I can imagine #6 Discovery to play when the first enter the giant head chamber...

No point for me to buy the CD when it is released because I don't really have a decent stereo system. I'll probably pick and choose from digital downloads...

I gotta see the score with the movie to make a final judgement. It comes across as suspenseful but it is more quiet and low key than I thought it would be. Still dig #3 track though called the Engineers.

The track 'Hammerpede' echoes Goldsmith's use of horns to indicate an Alien presence. I quite like that.

Some tracks left me a little underwhelmed, as Deuterium pointed out. Some strangely remind me of Danny Elfman (anybody else?......No?) Also, there's this two note motif going on, and it gets a little annoying after a while.

Yet, as a whole listening experience I personally find myself enjoying it for the most part. I'm now looking forward to seeing some moving images play alongside the soundtrack (16 days  :)).

Zenzucht, I'm afriad there never was any news of a Vinyl release.

I was pleasantly surprised - I think it's pretty excellent from what I've heard.

The Goldsmith/Horner scores have so utterly wormed their way into our consciousness for decades that nothing would ever be seen to us as so iconic, but I think this is very good.  It's also worth remembering that a fair bit of the final Alien was from of a whole other age, from Huston's Freud.

The last part of Hammerpede, those sudden bursts of sound reminded me of the final moments of The Shining.

I'll agree though that only about a 1/3 of those I've heard sofar, 'stick out' in a good way. The rest doesn't do that much for me, when just listening to them without the visuals and the full context.

A Planet is quite solid as well. I just hope they crank up the volume in the finished film when the landing scene plays, because imo it's too muted in the clip we've seen. I wanna be awed by both visuals and score  :)

Totally with Lady Cvalda on Kilar - I rewatched parts of Dracula when doin' our little thing and his score for that film is completely majestic. Stunning in parts...

This. I don't believe the tracks are in chronological order for the most part. Hearing 'Life' played over the beginning of time sequence would be a pretty fine way to open this movie in my books  :)

Agree completely. I mean, man, the way Kubrick used some of that in 2001 and the Shining is unbelievable. Too much of the Prometheus score is rather muted and underplayed, or else has me desperately thinking I can hear echoes of someone elses' (better) work...
Still, I don't think any of this will detract from the movie - I'm sure the score works very well with the images, I'd just have liked to have something gorgeous to listen to on the train, like Adagio from Alien 3.

Having now listened to the full score, i think its going to fit the film very well.

In all honesty this is more like a series of textures and moods, which i think once assembled together with the moving image of the film will be very effective.

It's pretty far out and creepy sounding, i like it.

That's what I liked best about the pastiche that was Alien's final score.  A lot of silence and then weird tones; also, the beautiful old piece over the credits.  This evokes a lot of that for me, but adds some grandeur given the premise of Prometheus and its larger scope.  Especially with A Planet and Life.

I really like Going In and Engineers as well, which quite reminds me of some of Goldsmith's unused score.

I like Elliot Goldenthal but I always thought his score was a bit off, except for a few pieces like the end.  Maybe that's just because I so disliked 3.  His work, which was good, seemed like a wasted effort as well as dissonant with the film.

Also love Lento and Candles in the Wind. When this movie first came out, I was about 20-something, and really used to piss of my night-shift mates by playing this score really loud. Christ know what they thought of me...

I know what people say about Alien 3, and it is indeed a masterclass in how not to produce a film, but the fact that is isn't a total bag of shite (which is really down to the way the story was developed) is thanks to the incredible artistry of the designers, the director, and very much to this wonderful musical score.
With the right development process, 3 could have been remarkable.

Maybe worth pointing out that Ward's original script had alien embryos being passed from mouth to mouth.... just sayin'
Title: Re: Prometheus soundtrack on iTunes!
Post by: SpeedyMaxx on May 15, 2012, 09:03:50 PM
I think Goldenthal's score would've fit much better with Ward's film, yes.  But I think all the versions of the film that evolved out of that, including his original script, were very flawed, despite some good ideas, and then that got mangled into something just boring to me, on a lot of levels.  I don't think any of them had it at all.  I would very much like to see David Fincher of the 21st century take on the franchise today, except I know he'd never touch it again.

Definitely a toss-up between 2001 and The Shining for best use of classical music IMO.

There's that stunningly symmetrical scene in the Shining where Wendy walks across the room to where Jack's sitting at the typewriter, all to the most atmosphericly dissonant strings.

I would put Terrence Malick right up there, as well, in terms of incredible use of classical music.  One of the most poignant endings in cinema, accompanied by Wagner's "Vorspiel".  The combination of Malick's framing and direction, Emmanuel Lubezki cinematography, and Wagner's music is sublime:

Seems OK. Nothing too special. Would have to listen to it in its entirety. Strangely, it reminds me a lot of Kloser's score for the 'Alien Versus Predator' film. It has many of the same sort of rhythms.

'Dazed' is oddly like some of the music from the first 'Aliens Versus Predator' game.

Mmmmm. Interesting.

Neither the 4/4 General MIDI disaster I was expecting nor the powerful thematic beauty I secretly hoped for.

Definitely not a patch on the sound scope of the first 3 Alien movies; a wee bit too Star Trek TNG for my liking i.e. long horns and strings that dont really go anywhere for the most part.

BUT, I am pleasantly surprised by a few gems.

Highlights of the bunch for me include:

'A Planet' - has a cool 60s Bond vibe.

'David' - again like the 60s Bond feel, synthetic elements, and faint echo of Goldsmith here too.

PS: 'Going In' / 'Too Close' - sorry, but this piece just sounds too comedic!

This is what i thought  :P
I liked what i heard but i was hoping to hear something more epic than that.

Music is, however, at least half, if not more, of what produces a film's emotional impact. Imagine 'Star Wars' or 'Back To The Future' with a different orchestral score! They wouldn't have been nearly as memorable as they were.

So, whatever feelings this generates in you is likely to be however much you're likely to be excited/intrigued/underwhelmed by the actual film.

Oddly, 'Alien 3' has one of the most superb soundtracks in cinema history and, therefore, could be the exception to this rule... But it's very rare.

I always thought I was alone in liking Alien 3's score - it's nice to hear so much agreement here.

I'm racking my brains for good films with bad scores....which is hard because I obviously don't collect bad scores. In the end I think it's a matter of balance. Any ordinary film does indeed rely on a strong score for emotional power; with a master cinematic artist like Ridley, then the images and the editing may be enough with only a subtle 'mood' track.

It's a great score ... some of its elements were reused in Goldenthal' Batman Forever.

But strong images can also bring out the music in a movie and make it better. Gladiator being a great example when we see the hand moving through the wheat field.

Did you mean that in a positive sense?    :P ;)

The Original Trek has some of the greatest music composed for a television series.
We miss you Fred Steiner, Alexander Courage, Sol Kaplan and Gerald Fried!

Positive. More than a few TNG episodes had a great score. The Best of Both Worlds being one of them. Voyager... I haven't watched in a long time but I remember the opening and don't think it was bad.

Gotta say I totally love listening to Life and A Planet(especially the second half). Those horns at 1:30-1:40 are so Elliot Goldenthals Alien3 score...  :)

I'm actually really liking what I hear... so far.

Nothing on the level of Jerry Goldsmith's score for Alien but that was to be expected.

It's funny how people always refer to Goldsmith's score for Alien when they want to criticise others music.  Funny in that, a success that it turned out for him, what it really boiled down to was Scott's genious in how to use what Goldsmith actually had in mind and make it work.  Indeed, what some people don't know is what Goldsmith REALLY turned out for Scott was over 4 hours of musical cues, half of which Scott didn't really like and most ended up being cut to ribbons, not used in the film as intended, while some of the later cues even came from another of Goldsmith's works called Freud.

As for this Prometheus soundtrack, it is hard to judge from snippets but it sounded fine to me.  David was certainly the pick of the bunch I thought. How it really turns out we'll just have to see, though I don't really expect it to be in the same leaugue as Elliot Goldenthal's Alien3, still easily the best score of all these films including AvP to date.

Actually Roary, Goldsmith's complete Alien score is available (I think it is even on YouTube)...and, IMHO, every track is complete genius.  Even when he was writing weird, dissonant pieces for the Alien soundtrack, it still came out bearing his signature Romantic style.

Yes I have this too, I agree Goldsmith did a grand job though I wouldn't call every track a genious, and for whatever reason Scott and FOX didn't agree on it either.  Wether it's really the whole thing is debatable, like I said it's well known Goldsmith did over 4 hours of music for this film, but it's nice to hear what he had in mind as well how it turned out in the film, both of which are very different things. Still not a patch on Goldenthal's beautiful Alien3 for me though.

Well, I've just finished listening to the entire score album. And it can be summed up in one word:

Dull.

Turns out those iTunes samples contain virtually all the best bits of the score. The rest of it is aimless, melody-free droning accompanied by swishy electronic sample noises. The whole thing (bar HGW's main cue) sounds like it's being performed by a chamber orchestra. I can count on one hand both the number of melodies and interesting musical ideas present in the entire hour long presentation.

This is easily the weakest score of the franchise. :( As something to play in the background of the film, it's fine, but as a memorable, standalone listening experience it is a crushing disappointment.

I actually thought that was one of the better aspects of that mess of a film. I've not listened to all of the Prometheus score but from what I heard I do like it. I think it will fit just fine with the rest of the series once I see the movie as well.

The Alien Resurrection score was sort of forgettable. The theme heard during the credits was a little charming but it didn't seem like it fit.

I like all the scores.  I think there's a lot that works in Goldenthal's beautiful stuff - it just doesn't strike me as working for Alien 3.  Alien: Resurrection had a score I quite liked, particularly the callbacks in it to Goldsmith's themes.  I remember a great moment when someone finally remembers Ripley used to be a pilot and she takes control of the Betty, and then Goldsmith's original planetfall music strikes up amidst a piece in the score.

I don't see the hate for this, I have only listened to the samples but it sounds pretty damn good to me. Although I personally wasn't blown away by any of the Alien soundtracks, I was by Blade Runner's though, interestingly "life" and "earth" kinda remind me of Blade Runner. I haven't heard anything that stands out as amazing though, i kinda wish they kept some music from the trailers.

A lot of the Streitenfeld pieces, particularly Going In and Engineers, actually remind me of some of Goldsmith's unused stuff.  There's a lot of weird shit on that soundtrack that I can recall, weird horns and drums and snares coming out of nowhere, but I liked it there and I like the strange rhythms here very much.

I always thought I was alone in liking Alien 3's score - it's nice to hear so much agreement here.

Gosh, no... It was regularly upheld as the best score, even on the film series News Group, back in the late 1990s!

You don't even consciously realise it until you listen to it on its own. I've written a huge amount of emotional horror stuff with many of the tracks from it providing inspiration.

Actually, it's like the track from 'Alien' if it had been composed for an episode of 1960s vintage 'Star Trek'.

something curious about some tracks related.
#10-david have a tone that is present in #16-small beginnings,
and also have a clock sound effect that is present on #20-spacejockey.
#18-friend from the past is the exact theme from Goldsmith's Alien (DNA?)
#23-planting the seed feels like a twist scene (something bad) and
last #25-birth is very dark, have some Alien elements and feel like a cliffhanger end.
i know music is very subjective but thats what i can capture from those tracks.

Honestly, I'm still on a buzz regarding the soundtrack.  I am pleasantly surprised at how it turned out.  I was expecting some kind of disaster, because it easily could have been terrible but it's a very solid offering.  I might not listen to it as much as I listen to the Alien soundtrack but that's fine.  I don't want a duplicate of Jerry Goldsmith's work.  His work is honoured here but in a style that matches the rest of the score.  There are a few average tracks but there's definitely some standout pieces too.

I know opinions are heavily divided but I am a happy camper! ;D

Not telling i didn't like it  :P
I find it pretty good.

But i didn't find it as good as the Blade runner, Jurassic Park, or Back to the future soundtracks.

Anyway i haven't seen the movie yet, so i am pretty sure i will feel different about it when seeing both the movie and the music at the same time.

Well I've listened to the entire thing three times now. It is sort of growing on me, although it is nowhere near as substantial as a stand-alone suite as I'd like. It's a kind of crazy mash up of Fifth Element, Event Horizon, Terminator 2, with some Stargate (the movie) thrown in. The better pieces include Space Jockey and David, the first because it breaks out into something quite grand, and the second for its quirky clockwork motif.
Speaking of motifs, that 8-note (or 4 x 2 note) motif in many of the earlier tracks is... a bit annoying, it's not really anything. It reminded me, for those Brits who watched the comedy 2012, of the episode where PR agency tries to find a ditty for the Olympic website and ends up with a set of seven identical notes

I go the other way, too much melody, too many real instruments.  Not enough drone and sounds.

I am so bored of melodic film soundtracks.  But it might be my fault, I expected more like the 1972 solaris soundtrack.  Now that might be too much to expect from a 2012 film.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUy-Mc2nY10#ws (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUy-Mc2nY10#ws) Some melody, a ton of weird drone and LOOK!  A photo with a synthi 100, the king of analog synths.

It sucks because there are parts i really like.  The drone at the beginning of "Going In" before the strings and percussion come in and kinda ruin it.  That was a nice drone.

Plus, it sounds too sequenced.  Like, it all sounds like ableton snap to grid function.  Lacks any organic quality.

Still I am gonna walk around for a few hours and listen to it.

A lot of "Aliens" via "Star Trek: The Wraith of Khan" and "Krull" moments as well.

There are even "Battle Beyond the Stars" moments.

Very James Horner.  Blah.

Track = "Earth"

Dated?  Yes.  Out of place?  Yes.  It sounds like a track from "Blade Runner" remixed for a modern film.

Oh god, the f**king bullshit war drums and discordant strings cliche.  That one never gets old.....

I hope this works better in conjunction with the film because on its own it lacks any identity.  This could be from any modern scifi film.

I'm in the "absolutely loved it" camp.

I'll post more on the individual tracks, as I don't think the arrangement or the situation allows for a general review of the whole score, but my most pleasant surprise was the overall mood.

It's tragic, almost.  Dramatic, tense, terrifying, and very very human.  That's what nailed it for me, I think.  This isn't an Alien3 magnum opus, nor a complete mystery like Alien.  The audience knows pretty much whats up at this point.  If there's a derelict, and anything to do with the Alien, people are going to die, and horribly.

These tracks, especially the first one, The Planet, convey such a sense of powerful sacrifice, endeavor, and loss.  In a film like this with so many powerful characters, you need the focus to be on this sense of mortality and yearning to survive.  Each death is another part of the whole, and you can almost feel the entire human race hanging by this ill-fated but wonderful breakthrough mission that is Prometheus and what it means for civilization.  Just makes it that much more moving, to me.

I really didn't want some hyper-scary generic horror soundtrack, or a fake epic non-stop choir of pseudo drama and seriousness.  The minimalism of the style is so fitting, the timing and everything, really just right for me.

All I could think were David's foreboding words: "how far are you willing to go to find your answers?"

Makes me want to invest myself in the film and the characters, and from a fans point of view, that's about as successful as you can get with a score.

Enough of my shallow snobbery!  Back to listening...

Oh I know!

And I disagree.   The latter part of "earth".  All it is missing is a few synth doodles, deckard sitting at a piano drinking, and a unicorn running past the camera with its horn about to fall off.  That is the only Vangelis moment I have heard so far.  The rest I agree with you on.

I have made it clear in earlier post that Melodic soundtracks kinda turn me off.  My world is filled with buzzes, hums birdcalls, the sound of machinery more then it ever will be huge musical movements [but less then a lot of people cause shockingly i manage to make a living off the world of music].  I think a lot of sound tracks should be though of as that.  More ambient noises in the background, less huge musical cues.

We agree for different reasons that it's not great and neither of us are sold on it.  I am gonna wait to see how it plays out with the movie but from the perceptive i am hearing it now, I am just not feeling it.  "Small Beginnings" is another one that confuses me.  It sounds half like the love theme from "Krull" and half like Batman is about to punch someone or say something in a growlly voice.

A Friend From the Past sounds like something that would play over the last scenes... establishing shots or something... Then there's the possibility that the title has a double meaning and it plays while something on screen, literally makes you think of Alien...

My friend, that is not "music".  Most of what you are describing is called "noise".  And movie studios already have people for that.  They are called sound engineers/designers and foley artists.

Didn't Goldenthal use some ambient sounds in his score - rattling chains and the like? I seem to remember some 'making-of' video where the sound effects bods were pissed off at him nicking their jobs...

I don't hate all melody, I just think people want too much of it[and I am kinda sick of it, after 20 years as a semi-pro to pro musician and someone who works in music, it can get very tiring].  To me it is like harsh noise, after a while i want something very different.  Or Ambient or drone, whatever.

I just think it is a time and place thing and maybe in a film about a bizarre other world filled with bio-mechanical terrors, a lot of melody might not be what you want.  I don't look at giger and think melody, I look at Giger and think "Merzbow".

My friend, that is not "music".  Most of what you are describing is called "noise".  And movie studios already have people for that.  They are called sound engineers/designers and foley artists.

"Noise" and "music" are identical phrase in my mind.  I value and view them as the same thing.

Much of the "music" I love is "noise" to most people.

I have always found it kinda cheese.  Few weave both of them together well.  It's also the instruments then choose.  I think the juxtaposition of acoustic melodic instruments and a lot of drone sounds off.  Not the right texture for the piece.  Not all but quite a bit.

Now if you play the melody on a synth, or an instrument so effected it looses its acoustic principles and sounds completely electronic, that I find more pleasing to my ears.  But this is just what I like and I expect no one else to like it.  [I just like to be clear that I am only speaking for myself, and I do not expect anyone to share the view I do at all]

I haven't seen the film.  Maybe it will work.  Just when I look at the world they are showing I don't think melody.  I barely think what most would call music.  I call it music but I will be the first to admit I have a weird vision of what music is now.

AVANTE GARDE!

Those two words make me have a torrettes fit. I don't know why. I just start yelling random things when I see those words.

To be fair though, even Goldsmith didn't score the film "right" according to the producers/editors, and they had to use bits from his other scores. They fiddled with what he originally composed, and he had to do a whole new opener as I recall.

So I think there is some truth to the idea that the weirder stuff shouldn't be too... Lush, it should be more ethereal, weird, and abstract.

I do like some "avant garde" composers.  I love Debussy.  I also am fond of a lot of Stravinsky's work.

I don't mind the mixing and combination of styles.  It is just when a composition slants heavily in favor of atonal, dissonance and noise, at the expense of melodic and harmonic content, that I part ways.  Again, just my personal preference and opinion.

Even with "modern" composers, I still prefer those compositions featuring a strong melodic structure.  If the composer also happens to be a virtuoso, all the better:

I just want to mention this, because it seems to be totally ignored...

In my opinion, you risk looking like a big ass if you pass final judgment on a movie score without even seeing the movie it was scored for.

Alien3, without the film, is at times staggeringly beautiful, and at other times a total chaotic mess.  I mean it's a basic thing to say, but there's just so much talk of disapproval when we don't even know how the film will feel or how the score will work with it.

Blade Runner is the same.  It's amazing music by itself, but it fits the film like a glove.  I don't think it would work with any other film, and if I could've heard it before I'd seen Blade Runner, it would've seemed very strange indeed.

I think that's more important than judging it as some stand-alone piece of music.  It has to work with the vision and theme of the film, first.

An example that always comes to mind is Terminator: Salvation.  That score was one I consider very underwhelming, especially considering the ridiculous composer they choose for it (Elfman, really?) but when listened to by itself, I actually really like it.  I just don't think does anything for the film.  Most of the time as I watched it, I could barely remember any music at all.

/Two cents.

No. You can judge a standalone soundtrack album on its musical merits just fine without seeing the film it's written for. If it's good, it shouldn't need a cognitive association in your head with the scene it's written for to be enjoyed or appreciated.

Ehh, it's a film score.  I mean, it's not meant to be listened to like a classical movement.  It can work, sure, but it flows according to the drama on the screen, not according to how it sounds as a piece itself.

I don't think it's fair to a score to judge it thusly.  That's not its' purpose, which is to compliment and/or enhance a film.

Some of Alien3 is straight ear-grating, anxious, and plain awful.  It's supposed to be, because people are being murder-death-killed on screen.  Listening to apart from this, though, can be off-putting.  I've had many of my friends give me WTF face when these parts start playing.

But let's keep it real: Alien3 is truly one of a kind.  The original Alien score is also great, but Goldenthal got crazy with A3 so much that it stands out to this day.

Kind of another dynamic to this whole debate...  A3 is not your average score.  It's actually my all-time hands down favorite behind Khatchaturian's Gayane "Adagio," which isn't a score itself but was used heavily in several films.

This is RagingDragon thoughts.
When the music is a masterpiece you can listen to it with our without any Movie scene, it inspires you to think in something.

i sometimes just find myself listening to the Jurassic Park, Terminator or even Ghost Busters theme.

Again i am not saying the track is bad, it's really good but unfortunately it's not something i would find myself hearing if not watching to the movie.

I've listened to the score a couple of times.

Obviously, and right away, Jerry Goldsmith Strietenfeld is not. End of debate. That being said, this score reminds me of some of the classic Bible films in its ominous tone. I'm hearing 'Going In' at the moment and it's creating the right tone for me, and there's just enough melody that I feel like this score not only does the job, but does it wonderfully. There are even a couple of moments that remind me of Elliot Goldenthal's ALIEN3 score and yet, Streitenfeld maintains his own perspective.

I'm beyond surprised as I was waiting for and expecting something absolutely mediocre. He brought his A game, and even without context, I know I'm somewhere as beautiful as it is dangerous. Perhaps I'm in the small percentile, but, yeah, I love this score.

Hmmm, maybe, although I tend to associate that part of the theme with the opening and closing of the film as perceived by Goldsmith - so more to do with the human aspect, or the Nostromo. Not that I'm suggesting the 'friend' is a cameo of the Nostromo.

Overall, I'm pleasantly surprised by the soundtrack. Obviously it doesn't feel quite as real and fluid as Goldsmith, so I'm assuming that it isn't played by a philharmonic orchestra, which would give it more oomph, and I have to admit that the HGW stuff is currently evoking a little bit too much Star Trek (which I'm hoping I'll disassociate once the music is married to visuals), but I like what I hear as themes throughout.

Goldsmith is still tops, but it's good that this score evokes some what he did and some of the more effective moments of Goldenthal. Fortunately I'm not hearing Horner much, if at all. His score, despite being played by the London Symphony orchestra and having a richness because of it borrowed too heavily from previous work or other composers work (a temp track issue I guess), so never found much favour with me.

Having collected soundtracks for more than 30 years I can't say I'm totally blown away by the Prometheus score, but I think it works well enough and is a sight better than most modern action/sci-fi film scores. I've listened to it a few times now and the tone it's creating as a complete piece comes across - it's not just an exercise in thumps and crashes and stings and driving beats - which was my concern.

Here's something that's been on my mind, throughout my obsessive listening of the soundtrack for a few days now, hours each day...

Many of the Prometheus themes are so so sad.

This wouldn't really shock me, but I've thought a lot about the Alien movies and maybe our preconceptions of what Prometheus will be, and I have to say that it feels like a very different tone.

Alien was a horror movie.  I mean, it scared the shit out of almost everyone that watched it, and the music reflects this.  I honestly don't remember being too broken up about the crew getting killed, despite the fact that I liked them, but the point is that the focus was on the horrific and alien nature of the creature and how scary everything was.  There was more "oh god, how do we get out of this nightmare" than sad reflections on the loss of life.

Prometheus, on the other hand, has this sprawling revelation to it, and the characters are going to be pressed into making huge, earth-shattering decisions in the midst of this horrible, alien discovery and death.  I think the score reflects this heavily, and can't help but feeling this huge sense of something that makes what happens to the crew something that we didn't feel in Alien...

Even Alien3, which is a great basis for comparison though still a superior score, greatly increased the emotional tugging with tracks like Lento and of course Adagio.  More human elements...

I don't know, and am gonna stop before the serious rambling begins.  What do you guys think of this?  How do you feel if you agree or disagree?

Sigh. I've listened to this score album all the way through seven times now to try and force myself into thinking it's good. It's just not working. :( There are a handful of memorable tracks, the rest just completely flat musical wallpaper. Part of the problem is the wretched album presentation itself--the track order was seemingly selected at random, with no thought put toward providing an enjoyable listening experience. Instead of actually ending, the album just... stops. No climax or release. It's like whoever organized the album just hit the shuffle button and said "good enough." The audio master is piss-poor: muddy and thin and with almost no weight whatsoever. And then it's just too long: this score is not interesting enough to warrant a full hour-long runtime. 15 minutes of boring synth loops could have been cut and this score would come across a lot more listenable on album. The score for Alien Resurrection has an excellent two-disc, hour and a half presentation available from La La Land, and it is very listenable and enjoyable. Can anyone seriously imagine sitting through an hour and a half of this score without getting bored?

I completely concur, Cvalda.

There are too many tracks...none of them long enough to develop any theme or motive.  Obviously, that is not the composer's style.  As for me, if I am going to listen to a complete score, I want there to be strong themes and melodic content...especially if it is expected to stand on it's own, as a musical experience.  And let's face it, if someone dishes out the money for the score, one presumes that they intend to listen to it multiple times (like any album).  So, I think that the score has to be able to stand by itself, outside of the context of the film.  IMHO, this Prometheus score fails this test.  Again, I realize, just my opinion.

IMHO, here are a few examples of film scores that can be listened to, in their entirety,

So sorry you didn't enjoy the soundtrack Cvalda....again, based on reading your comments the past couple years, I'm not at all surprised. I was expecting something prett mediocre to be honest. I've listened to the score for Prometheus probably 5 times now. The first time I wasn't at all impressed, and then, it grew on me and to echo another member here, I started feeling this sadness while hearing the music. Again, as aforementioned I can listen to this score more easily then I can the incredible Jerry Goldsmith Alien score.

Maybe contextuallizing the music with the film may help?

As an addendum, and Imho the score for Alien Resurrection was one of the worst scores that I've ever heard.

Yes.

But I tend to not listen to soundtrack albums in isolation much.  I turned off the Goldsmith and Horner scores eventually.

Yeah, that's great, those are all classic movie scores which we all love.  But the ones I'd listen to in isolation for long stretches are very few, even then.

Also, I think it's a little unfair to look at the score for a new movie and immediately try to compare it to Morricone's Leone films or iconic themes like Jaws or the Star Trek theme.  I think the new score is quite alright, and appropriately different from what came before.  And I love the scores for the first two Alien films, I think they're masterful and I remember them to this day, but would I put them in the category of any of the linked tracks above?  No, that's just a whole other tier and not what was intended for them or those films, either.  Same with Prometheus.  Star Trek was a massive television and film franchise - Leone's films were their own breed - Jaws had a leitmotif for a shark.  The Alien films are different.  And that's fine.  If we're going to immediately handicap something for not being an eternal masterpiece right out the gate, why bother?

Hello Speedymax,

I am not sure what you mean in your statement:  "No, that's just a whole other tier and not what was intended for them or those films, either".  Are you talking about the original Alien soundtrack, or are you talking about the compositions I linked to?  And if it is the latter, what do you mean that they were not "intended" for those films.  Sorry, I am confused.

Also, I can't stand the over-played leitmotif for the "shark".  You will notice I picked two Williams works from Jaws, which do not feature this device.  Instead, they are exquisite examples of William's ability to compose in the very complicated baroque fugue/counterpoint form...while still maintaining a beautiful, romantic lyricism.

Cheers.

What I mean is I put several of those tracks in a whole other tier of really iconic movie themes and such that are just incomparable.  I feel it's unfair to pit any score - including all the Alien ones - against stuff like that, in terms of how it rates.  That's an exercise in self-fulfilling prophecy, IMO.

I also feel that those films are really a whole different animal from the Alien films.  Leone's films have their own thematic underpinnings and these vast, operatic scores; Jaws is a big high adventure monster movie; Conan is another big epic thing, and Star Trek is this sweeping brand unto itself.  Alien and the subsequent films are these dark, creepy suspense pictures - it's just a different breed, I feel.  And I think the Prometheus score is doing its own thing, too, different from what came before.  But just because something is not John Williams or Jerry Goldsmith's finest works doesn't mean I don't think it can rate.  I always found Howard Shore's score for Seven to be excellent, but I would not try to match it up against Jaws, Conan or Trek - it's something totally different.  Perhaps not as instantly memorable, but it works for me.

There are a couple of tracks on the Prommy soundtrack the sound pretty iconic in my opinion. :)

Hardly.

It's just very good music.

One should never go into something expecting it to be "just not as good as the classics." That's why everything turns out so lame anyway.

of the Doom flick, the writer David Callaham wrote "There was no way I was going to match Doom 3 in terms of atmosphere and scare factor." That's... Giving up, right off the bat.

It is entirely fair to rate the Prometheus score next to it's fellow Alien soundtracks. It's fellow movie soundtracks for that matter. It should be able to stand on it's own two feet and be incredible. There's no reason not to expect that.

Of course, a score should aspire to greatness.  But I don't think putting it next to truly legendary scores and then saying "now that's real movie music!" is quite fair.  Of course that's great movie music, we all grew up with it, remember it.  Doesn't mean this score isn't very good, as well, for what it is.  For all we know someone's going to grow up and remember this.

Indeed. I'm not big on A:R, but it does have a very interesting, beautiful score. Very haunting.

Nobody is on when I'm on, then everybody gets on and posts 4,298 f**king posts before I catch up!

You all are freaking impulsive, or I just have terrible timing.

Anyway, I agree with you Cvalda... I've been playing the score on repeat on my MP3, and though I love it, most of the tracks I really stop to listen to seem to be in the beginning, besides Collision, and that Alien theme of course catches my ear, but you're right, it just ends.

It's started over several times and I barely noticed until I recognized that awesome (but short) Planet track.  I've also been staring at the track listings for awhile trying to make sense of them, it does seem very thrown together and doesn't flow.  But then again, the order suggests that it's random and will be fairly different from the arrangement in the film.

Dunno what to think, but I'm gonna be all over that Resurrection score as soon as humanly possible.  I listen to it all the damn time on Youtube, but upon reading that, my pants have filled with audio glee.

Get the two disc set, RagingDragon, it's an excellent score that really needs to be heard in its full 90+ minutes to be appreciated. :) Samples and more here:

Listened to it in it's entirety - damn this music is delicious (if that even makes sense in context)

So many different moods and themes; part adventure, dread, terror and tragedy. Easily one of the best scores if heard in a long time. Listening to 'Friend from the past'... lil bit of pee came out. Curious to see whats happening on screen when it's played.
