Pros and Cons of Blomkamp films influencing Alien 5

So now we've seen three Blomkamp feature films.  What are the pros and cons of how this body of work may influence Alien 5?

Super violence and really mean, awesome bad guys? Awesome. Can't beat that splatter gore and POV shots from assault rifles.

Lame stories that are way too sentimental? Bad. This better be a horror film, but based on his work, I just can't visualize it.

A big pro is that he's great at animatronics and doesn't just spam CGI and green screen everything.

1) Excellent directing of action scenes and "world creation".

2) Ability to attract A list actors to his films.

3) Very good eye for special effects work.

Con:

1) bad at writing yet insists on writing his own scripts.

2) gets carried away with "concepts" and loses focus on creating decent characters.

3) each film he's made has been worse then the last.

Blomkamp...if you're watching this...don't write the script on your own! I trust in you as a director, but please you must have a true writer for your film. (and please hire a good writer, don't make the same mistake that Ridley Scott  )

Yeah, pretty much this. Really, a lot of those cons could be gotten ridden of by just hiring a competent writer to make a script using his ideas. He's acknowledged that his weakness is writing. Hopefully he has the good sense to swallow his pride and ask for help in that department.

Social commentary is something of a calling card from the two films I've seen. Alien and Aliens had this in spades, though as we said on other threads, the first movie's comment on mega-corps were not wanted by the writers.

I hope that the commentary isn't too heavy handed in all honesty, but for the movie to have any relevance and resonance, it has to be in there. And it has to be new - we've had evil corps, we've had bad military policy guilt... I wonder what it'll be for this one?

Thinking about it a bit, it's interesting that this film is coming off of the heels of films dealing with sentience in "artificial" creations in both the Alien franchise (Prometheus) and Blomkamp's own personal canon (Chappie).

That being said, I don't see that being the thematic focus of this film. I can see him having a lot of fun exploring these futuristic mega-corporations (not just Weyland-Yutani, but perhaps their competitors as well) and showcasing them at both their best and their absolute worst. Blomkamp already did this a bit with MNU in District 9 and TetraVaal in Chappie, but both of those corporations existed in variations of the modern world and, while they held major stock in current events and the government in their own right, they certainly didn't have any real control outside of their country's borders, let alone throughout space. Given their sole focuses (MNU dealt with weapons and alien relations and TetraVaal dealt with building robotic police units) I don't really see them expanding the way WY did, either. We know of WY trying to get their hands on an Alien specimen and terraforming colonies, but there is so much more to that corporation. We see their logo slapped on everything, and there are a lot of interesting directions the company can be taken in.

Pros:

• The man lives and breathes the world of Alien. It's his favorite film, and his genre interest and style reflect that
• Unlike the other directors, aside from Scott, that have continued the "Alien Series", he is totally enamored with the realistic and mechanical realism of certain Science Fiction. Gears, nuts Bolts, Pulleys, Batteries, Oil, Fluid, Chemicals, Plastic, and Dirt, Bullets, Backpacks, Costumes, and analyzing worlds from an economic point of view. The last one, is core to the Good Ones, of Alien, the ones that were interesting, Alien, Aliens, Alien 3 (to a lesser extent). Nobody can doubt that the aspect of The Mechanical Porn won't be part of this film, just as it was with Alien and Aliens.
• He has three films under his belt, one was a critical and financial success, a beautiful movie  I love District 9. The latter two were flawed additions, or spiritual successors. I appreciate what he went for, and I think, it worked and didn't. But he's a breath of fresh air anyways. If he has another critical failiure like Chappie, as sad as I am to say that, he's gone. Combined with the fact, he loves Alien/Aliens to death, for him to f**k this up would be catastrophic and I don't think he wants that.

Cons:

I think Chappie was really bad mostly because of bad acting, plot holes/non believable plot parts, continuenity problems, script and just like in prometheus; unrealistic character behaviour. Visually great, I think Blomkamp will nail that part but the story could take a backseat and be plot hole ridden with second grade acting and smirky hollywood humour. I'm a bit worried.

I think it's a bit melodramatic to call anything "second grade acting", when you've seen adam sandler comedies make millions of dollars. The acting in Chappie wasn't bad at all.

Yes to this. I really REALLY hope he gets some writing help and together he and the writing team can nail down an excellent movie.

I think I haven't read anywhere here yet about the portrayal of "The Company" in Chappie.  Blomkamp struck the perfect balance of characteristics which the company had to make it evil, yet not evil.  There were no evil motivations in the company.  They were behaving like every corporation out there, and yet they were evil.  I think this sort of balanced approach is the way that Weyland-Yutani should be represented as.  I've said this before in another thread, W-Y is actually doing something good.  They are trying to get humanity to study an Alien species for the purpose of humanity's defense W-Y weapons division.  If W-Y has any records of what happened on LV-223, then it is imperative that we know as much about the aliens as possible.  Anybody who ever read "Art of War" knows that W-Y's research is invaluable, perhaps to the extent that "crew may even be expendable".  We're talking about the survival of our species.

I digress, but I just think the way BK portrayed MNU and the company in Chappie bodes well for how he will present W-Y.

Also, his love of the first 2 films makes him exactly the man I want in the director's chair.  I don't need any half-assery.

As a con, hmmm, well sometimes his films get a bit too gross.  I just couldn't stand the squalor and grossness of D9 but I guess it was par for the course.
