Really like the new direction.

It's a live-action viral trailer for the game it seems. Building hype towards the E3! 8)
Seems more horror than fantasy.
I think this might me a movie. But who knows.
Whatever this is advertising, it worked. I'll pay good money for whatever they're selling after all that. @_@
Mortal Kombat fans are being treated to a new movie.
It features Jaxx, Sonya, Reptile, Baraka, Shang Tsung, Sub Zero and Scorpion.
Its one of those "revamp" movies were a director takes liberties with the original story. See if you can spot a couple of changes as I look for something to throw up in...

This better not be the movie!
Johnny Cage looks nothing like the character from the games, and Reptile looks nothing like the character from the games and Baraka looks terrible! Baraka with dreads? And now hes black?! Are you f--king kidding me?!
Whats next? Liu Kang is bold and likes to listen to hip hop music?! Whats next? Scorpion instead of wearing a yellow ninja suit is now rocking a black hoddie with bagy jeans?! God dammit they raped the franchise didn't they? :'(
I don't know about rape so much as make it less campy and ridiculous.
I've never been a MK fan but this actually made me interested in the franchise.
It could be game
Looks good, anticipating e3 even more now than I was just a few minutes ago.
There's already a thread about this.

None of them look like the characters I grew up playing. Baraka is a doctor? And he has dreads? No, it's impossible, this is a joke, good one guys haha you really had me going.
Yer in the game section
They're all still recognizable. I always loved Mortal Kombat. There's a lot of great characters and mythology in there, but come on. It's not the origins of the characters that make them iconic. Baraka's character is MADE by the claws. Johnny Cage is MADE by his pretty boy looks and cocky attitude. He may not have been blonde in the trailer, but I would believe that is Cage. Reptile is still well... reptilian. Their attitudes and iconic traits are all still there.
Whatever it is, it looks great.

It's called
REBOOT.
This a realistic take on Mortal Kombat while keeping the main traits of the characters. And it looks awesome.
Sorry, I thought this was just released. And no, it looks like the worst thing in history.
Wow if that's is the trailer for the new movie then Holy crap I'm hype up. I waited so long for a dark and ture MK movie, and my wish has came ture. This better not be like the new SF movie.
Those seven minutes just made Mortal Kombat awesome again.
The clip is well put together, great acting and visuals. But they are no longer the characters I grew up playing anymore. It's like taking the alien and instead of it having the long slick dome head....
it now has a round human head . Instead of making the alien black, it's now f--king white! Sure it has the tail and xenomorph skin but dam man, it looks way too different. I'm old school MK dude, this is way too different.
I didnt know this thread existed. This looks like the worst trash in history. WTF happened to taste ? Every film looks the same these days. They could have slapped any title on it, it looks like everything else and nothing in particular. What a f**king liberty.
The teaser looks awesome, and this movie looks much better then the last SF movie that we got.
By being generic and nothing like Mortal Kombat ? They changed everything but the names. It looks as much like Street Fighter or Donkey Kong as it does Mortal Kombat.
Who caught the sneak peak of Sub Zero's mask? It's there for a split second at the end...

That's actually sort of disappointing. I would love a new game, but not as much as I would love a serious, dark, intelligent film treatment.

As long if the characters act the same and have the same background story as they do in the game, then I will be fine. All I'm hoping for a solid movie since the first MK movies where corny, and nothing like the games.

Why's that? I've grown tired of the games recently. Armageddon was the most awesome of the games on newer consoles, and that was just because it had such a massive roster. I didn't even bother with MK vs DC because... come on... really?

If this is the new Mortal Kombat direction I am not so sure I like it at all. But I'll give it a chance. :)
I know nothing of the games, but the movies suck and this looks cool, so I'm up for it.
For a teaser for a video game, I doubt they will get people like Micheal J White for the game.
This backfired on you pretty well Anto, because I agree with the others, this looks pretty awesome.
This is NOT, I repeat NOT a movie trailer!
It's test footage done to gauge the fans reaction. Why? WB wants to see if there is still fan interest in the series before ponying up millions to make it. It's unlikely these are the actors or director involved.
WB just wrapped up some legal issues over MK, and wants to see if it was worth it. Any MK movie would be 3 years away, and they wouldn't have a script, let alone a cast or filmed scenes.

Dark,
You won a box of Jeff Goldblum Wafers. :)
I usually dont like Reboots but Mortal Kombat could really use one. All the realms and sorcery stuff was getting pretty ridiculous. If they made a really dark, gritty and realistic game then it could really stand out from the rest of the fighters out there.
Oh, good sir. Your reference strikes my fancy and makes my nerd gland jiggle and ooze nerd juice.
Really though, this thread can probably be closed on the grounds that there are multiple conversations on this topic.
EDIT: I see my post has been moved. A quick response on the part of the mod team.
The realms and the sorcery is what made MK the classic game we all know and love. To take that away permanently, would be the termination of the series in the long run but, that's just my opinion.

It would be The Dark Knight of video game movies in terms of realism :D
Until E3 2010 comes with more information, I'm assuming this is a proof of concept relating to the $10 million reboot of Midway's film franchise tentatively announced for release in 2013. So keep topics about it in this merged thread, as opposed to making more.
I have no idea why this was moved to the movies section, it seems more than likely that this is a promotion for an upcoming game that will be shown at E3.

update
Update: Our boys at LatinoReview have all the answers!
The short was directed by Kevin Tancharoen, who did the remake of Fame last year. Judging from this short, Kevin is the perfect director for this movie.
Jacks is played by Michael Jai White. Michael played Spawn and was in Undisputed II. Michael makes a great Jacks (Jax).
Sonya Blade is played by Jeri Ryan, who played Seven of Nine in Star Trek: Voyager.
Baraka was played by the very talented Lateef Crowder, who plays the Brazilian fighter in Undisputed III.
Scorpion is played by Ian Anthony Dale. Ian plays Kazuya in the upcoming big screen version of Tekken.
Johnny Cage was played by up and coming martial arts sensation Matt Mullins. Still working on who played Reptile. Will update when I find out.
The fight choreography was done by Larnell Stovall. Larnell did the fight choreography for Undisputed III and is one of the best fight choreographers in the business. You want to see the fights you deserve? Then you fans should DEMAND he be the guy in one charge for this reboot.
I know who might be playing Sub-Zero, but don't want to mention it in case it screws something up. He'd be perfect for the part.

Read my post above. A movie has been announced for some time now under the name "Mortal Kombat: Devastation," but was delayed due to a lack of shooting locations. There is more of a reason to believe at this time that this is a proof of concept for the full feature than it is a game announcement.

I love the dark, gritty and realistic look it has. I feel like this can turn to be a great or good MK movie for once. I never like any of the MK movies from the 90's, they feel like power rangers episodes mixed with some MK in it.
If this was a trailer for a game, suicide would ensue, for me anyway.
They need to make a movie based of MK2 or MK: Deception. The two best games in the franchise. Or, at least make a movie that follows the MK1 storyline closely. If The Watchmen could pull it off, then why can't MK?
To be honest, It would be amazing to see a more realistic Mortal Kombat game. But if it is a movie, a game, or a new action figure series or all three, I will be one happy guy. ONE. HAPPY. GUY.

I thought the first MK movie was okay. Certainly not violent enough to hold the reputation of the games, and a bit too campy, but overall watchable and entertaining. It lacked one thing though... Scorpion vs Sub Zero. Only good scene in Annihilation was that very same thing.

Maybe because the footage of "Sub-Zero" in the trailer is actually Zbrush fan art from 2005, which would not find itself in a professional ad? Which is a good sign that this is footage being shopped around to prospect studios, and not something with any other backing behind it? Just to name a few reasons.
It's not a movie yet. People have done this before, assembling a skeleton crew and some reels in the hopes that a movie studio likes what they see. Example: this trailer for a proposed Punisher movie, to be directed by an unknown director, was made before Lexi Alexander was announced as the director of Punisher: War Zone. Made of out pocket with high production value and the hopes of being picked up. Even had the Marvel logo slapped on it to add authenticity. Never got made. See some parallels?

Ed Boon BEST be delivering an MK game that's dark and gritty BUT, has to do with the mystical forces, realms, and stuff of that nature. I'd really like to know what happened after Armageddon even though the game sucked ass.

Nope, I love that they're dropping the whole "magic/fantasy" part of the MK franchise, I thought I'd be pissed off about it, but I myself approve if the idea, looks f**king great.
Obviously if they do go this route, it can definitely fall apart, but what they have looks great so far, and if the rest of the movie can give me even more of what I just saw, then by all means.
Why all the hate? The campy films that included all the mystical stuff weren't exactly great films. At least that reel looked awesome. It wont hurt the film either to knock out all the mystical elements because hasn't it only got a budget of 10 million? The less they have to spend on shoddy looking portals and other realms the better.
Let's hope this doesn't turn into another Street Fighter Legend of Chun-Li. They tried the realism root and the film was gawd awful.
The realism root could've worked if it wasn't for the people that were involved in it.

Same here, and Chun-Li sucked since none of the characters where the same in the video games. And that Fox cared less about the movie, and let it bombed. Too bad we are never going to see a real SF movie in the future.
I still hope for some supernatural fantasy feel to the movie.
If they bust the way that MGS can get away with using "supernatural forces" with technology, then this film (praying) will have done it's job right with what it's working with.
I can only shake my head at all the responses. This isn't right, why tear up my childhood? I fell in love with MK because of Outworld, the Netherrealm, all the mysticism behind the Realms. It's not hard to ask for a film that sticks to the roots of MK, why not just use Tekken for this? It's going in the modern direction anyway in the games.
I personally am glad the Mystical style was dropped, I mean I can see it in a video game form, but in the previous movies the mystical ideas and costumes were laughable.

But that's what the first two films did! They introduced Outworld and dozens of characters. Hell, Annihilation tried to cram as many fighters in it as possible. These people want to try something different, so I'll let them.
This certainly looks interesting to say the least... i'll wait and see if this leads anywhere before passing judgment.

We still don't know too much about the movie to say for sure if The Netherrealms are in it or not?
Well, I guess I'm outnumbered here. There's nothing I can do. MK never should've been a f**king movie in the first place. Animated, like Advent Children? Maybe. Live action. No.
I foresee the downfall of the MK franchise here, mark my words.

They could put a modern spin on it. It could be a part of Deacon City (from the trailer) similar to what the Narrows was in Batman Begins.

Same here, but at least that shows that they are somewhat not ignoring some of the things that have been established in the series.
I'm of the opinion that the more slavish a film is to its video game source, the less likely it is to be good. It focuses on fight scenes, iconography, things that the fans will notice, but makes story an afterthought. If a writer wants to make something original based on an established material while retaining certain elements yet focusing more on the script, it's more likely to be good.
That isn't to say that all vg movies that are original are good. Thing is, they still put action scenes in the fore and forget about story.
Movie will kick ass.

So did I, this looks nothing like what I grew playing and still love today. It completely changed, it's something else entirely. The only reason why the past two MK films weren't all that good wasn't because of the ideas, but because of bad directors in charge of an idea too big for them to handle. Jesus! Connect the dots guys.
It's 500 million times more ambitious and intelligent to go in the direction of "hey guys why don't we re-invent OUTWORLD and this time really make it a living breathing world!" New fighters and a new story, lets rediscover Mortal Kombat. Thats what I'm talking about, thats true Mortal Kombat.
Phantom, you and I are the REAL MK fans here. We grew up with it. It was the very first game I've EVER played. This "short" is to me what the Predalien is to the Yautja. Yes, I made a nerdy movie reference.

You wouldn't back such a steaming pile of shit if you were, don't feed me any of that. If you were a real fan, you would know that they're essentially eliminating what makes MK...MK.
I am a huge and dedicated fan. I love the f**king games, hell, I love MK: Annihilation despite it being such a dumb movie.
Just because I'm backing up this test demo of what the next MK movie may be like, doesn't mean that I don't give a shit about the franchise. I already did say that I should be pissed for removing such a major element of what makes MK, MK, but I'm not. Doesn't mean that I and the rest of the members who like this new direction, don't care about MK. We do.
What you're saying doesn't make any sense to me though. You should be pissed! I have no idea why you're not! It's a whole new movie using the names of MK characters.
Scorpion is an undead ninja spectre.
Baraka isn't a f**king failed doctor! He's a tarkatan mutant!
Reptile is the last of his kind, not some retarded disease ridden human being.
Shang Tsung is a sorcerer of immense power not a crime lord.
If you don't see what's wrong with those four characters, then hope is lost and I give up.
I do see what's different about everything. If I didn't, then I wouldn't be a fan of MK, and would just take everything at face value. I'm not pissed because I like what they're doing. What has been shown works with the direction they're going for.
You like that they're making a mockery of what was once the juggernaut of fighting games? Please explain to me what is that they're trying to do? They're making 4 absolutely awesome characters into ludicrous perversions of what they really are. Also, please, tell me what you like about this.

What I like about it is the direction that they're taking with this film. The different takes on these characters fit within the "realistic" direction. It didn't look as if the concept of the "real" world and the way these characters are portrayed didn't go well with each other, they do. Hell yeah, just what I was thinking!
Mortal Kombat is not supposed to be realistic, I think that's what it was going for back in '91-'92 when the idea was first conceived? Why ruin it and go in a new direction?

Don't see what's so realistic about different realms, sorcerers who want to take shit over, a tournament that holds the fate of one realm, undead ninja, people with powers that kill people, animalities, etc.

Read edited post, I said it's NOT supposed to be realistic.
Well that has no relevance to their direction. They're going with the "realistic" route, and obviously a lot has to be cut from what MK is known for in order to fit with their new direction. It works, if it didn't, we would see no connection to MK that this test demo showed.
Really. I'm tired of this. It's going to be awesome, and I'm going to bed.
Yeah, but most of the character directions are shit. How is Scorpion going to Toasty his opponents? How is Reptile supposed to fire his tongue from his mouth? If they can't make a good MK movie using all the mysticism and stuff like that, then it shouldn't be made at all. Think of it like this:
It reminds me of Nolan's Batman movies in the sense that they took an unrealistic world, and altered it to make it realistic. The difference is that Batman is realistic enough to where you don't need huge changes. MK on the other hand....is as impossible as can be. You have to change almost every character to make them realistic. Even normal human characters like Liu Kang have a storyline that revolves around total fantasy.
QuoteYeah, but most of the character directions are shit
Again that's your opinion.
QuoteHow is Scorpion going to Toasty his opponents? How is Reptile supposed to fire his tongue from his mouth?
They won't, or more than likely they'll figure something out. Reptile is eating people's heads, one of his fatalities is to grab a head with his tongue and eat it. Different how they represented it in the trailer, but is still more or less the same in the end.
QuoteMK on the other hand....is as impossible as can be.
Don't see how, the trailer seemed to show that it works out.
QuoteYou have to change almost every character to make them realistic.
And yet, the trailer didn't make us see any of the characters anything other than who they are. Sure, JAX said their names, but even then we are still able to make the connection of the name to the characters. If there was total agreement that some or all characters didn't match up with what they're names are, then there would be a problem.

LOL it just goes to show how they have reserved everything we used to love about the Mortal Kombat characters and storyline that made them so great. I'm all for change and doing something different but this is just crossing the line where it falls into raping the franchise violently. Whats next? Goro is really a deformed human with four arms?
Or Kung Lao watching that 007 movie with Odd Job in it and then going out and killing everybody with a custom made hat, lol.
on the trailer Jax wasnt aware of what mortal kombat is truly about (saving earth from Outworld invasion yada yada).. maybe they'll introduce the more fantasy aspects of mortal kombat a little bit at a time?

The story has to be about Lui Kang. It won't be right otherwise. When you focus on the other chars. it downplays the main cast.

Yeah, if this was about strictly Sonya, Jax, Kano, Kabal, and others like that, then I'd be all for it. Ryan said she did her role as a favor to a friend. "No idea yet what WB's reaction to it was," she adds. I can tell you what my reaction was: stoked.
While a Mortal Kombat film was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson (of Resident Evil movie fame) in 1995, an updated take on the franchise has been languishing in development hell. However, a lawsuit has been filed by the development partner of the original film as it signed a contract in 2006 to do a sequel.
The Mortal Kombat: Rebirth short was helmed by Kevin Tancharoen. He directed last year's Fame remake."
He directed Fame? This is worse then I thought, as if this could get any worse.

Yeah, it's great that this guy understands what's wrong with certain movies and how he doesn't want to step into any of the same mistakes. The guy knows what he's doing and I do hope that he gets a shot at making this film, cus I really want to see him go all out with a real budget instead of being limited to just a little over 7000 dollars.
If he made the ninjas like ninjas and Baraka more like his original design, I might give in. But I doubt thats likely.
I can`t believe what I read... You actually LIKED IT?!?!? This crap has nothing to do with MK! Where da f**k is Mortal Kombat in this? If you want new MK film then for God`s sake give Anderson a budget and let him do a sequel to his 1995 masterpiece! Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck!!! >:(

I couldn't agree more tbh. His MK movie was f**kin' epic. It was just what MK fans wanted. I'd love to see him make another with a decent budget. The guy doesn't get enough credit for what critics and fellow movie makers called "the hardest movie of its year to make".
The execution is solid, but the concept itself it still the late eighties goofiness which kept MK niche, no matter what the director says, same for the writer. You cannot straddle. One or the other, not in between. Making it more "realistic" is fine. The characterizations of Baraka and Reptile are stupid, simple-as. If you have to redesign a character that much, there's no point in even having that character at all.
Thats a very good way to put it actually. If they want to make it gritty, fine I have no problem, I support the idea. But not when it causes classic, beloved characters to completely change from what they are/where.
Jaxx - Is fine, I'll be happy with that.
Sonya - The same as Jaxx.
Reptile - Was "the green ninja". Represented exotic movements, combos, juggling and a great fighting style. He was meant to be the last of a reptilian race that existed in an unknown location. He served whoever could help him find out about his home. He was vicious, fast, "hidden" and his green colour choice represented him.
Baraka - A nomad. That was his race. They were unbelievably vicious people who lived in the Outworld and got by on ambushing and eating alive whoever and whatever they came across. The blades were a natural part of his body. He was originaly the palest member of the cast. Similar to Nosferatu, he was completely bald and had very sharp, nasty looking teeth. The creepiest character to enter the tournament.
Scorpion - My personal favourite. A spector who has returned from the underworld to seek vengence on Sub-Zero. He was a Japanese "ninja", and a ghost. Very fast, brutal and seemingly without remorse. He is NOT a prisoner who can kill whoever he wants and escape whenever he feels like it, so they decide to keep him at a local police station. He also shouldn't have the most American accent ever.
And where is whole biger aspect of the story? Whole war of the worlds? Why It can`t be made as MK2 based on film? First one was very much like first game, make second one very much like second game and every one is happy!
going by the interview they will definitely use Outworld and the mythology... Shang Tsung will be a sorcerer etc.... i like where this is going... hope he gets the gig :)

And Noob-saibot (earlier known as Sub-Zero, his brother later took that name), arch enemy of Scorpion. Also a Ghost Lin-quei warrior (chinise ninja-like assasin) seeking a vengance.
I was very sceptical after I saw this little video, but after I read this interview I say give him a chance. I hope his vision will get a green light.
I hope not. I prefere no movie insted of crap movie.
I don't really know with his ideas the movie will be crap or not. It all depends how he can make them work on the screen. I am a big MK fan and I don't like at all what he did with the characters in the video, but he said many things were that way because of the budget reasons. He want to include the gods, the realms, special powers etc in the movie. It can turn out to be really good. The first MK movie were crap and horrible. I really want a great movie from MK, because it has a lot of potencial IMO.
However much i liked it i really hope theyll keep some supernatral elements i mean come on its just not mk without supernatural elements. AND I wanted to see johnny cage use the ball breaker!!!!!!!! >:(
Watch good old Mk 1995.
I only have VHS and no VHS player. :'(
We only seven mins of the movie from the teaser, and if this director does get hired then I hope we know what's he is doing. It appears that we might see the realms in the movie maybe.

Masterpiece really? The movie did had some decent fight sceens, and a cool intro. But I found the first MK movie to be nothing that great or special in my opinon.
Not a masterpiece, but it really is the only video game movie that has been able to do it right.

Man, I love that fight scene. Reptile starts off so badass, just owning Kang, but suddenly can't seem to fight anymore. Never liked that part.
Yeah, I know. He was so lightening fast, and had a great style. But Liu Kang is just default winner.
I enjoyed the MK movies for what they were: just dumb kung fu/wrestling pictures. The games were never that special either. The whole story was a rip off of Enter the Dragon if you ask me.
But this new approach is interesting even though they seem to be throwing out all the stuff fans love about the series. I really liked the Reptile stuff. Here's hoping they get this off the ground, but at the same time try to give the fans something they love about the series.
never cared for Liu Kang on the games or on the movie... just the stereotypical good guy... the guys behind the promo are right in picking Scorpion as the main character...
Always thought Scorpian would be either have very short cut hair or bald. Him looking american and having a full facial set seems abit too casual. I always pictured him to look like an evil shaolin monk under his guise.
Looking American?
He's correct. The new version looks like he should be called Chad Rocket.

But in the part where they're just fighting, I find it unbelievably boring. Nothing's happening, storywise.

Yes, but we live in a touchy world. At least one person will be offended by that simply because of the word "black". I was poking fun at that fact. I know it isn't racist.
No black person gets offended by the word black.
But being pissed off because a character who wasn't even HUMAN, got re-imagined as someone who was black, makes no sense. I'd understand being annoyed by the dreads, since Baraka has no hair.
And that has nothing to do with baggy jeans hoodies and hip hop music.

Maybe he meant the country in Africa ?
And Baraka has faults everywhere. I think people are complaining about him being black, because he was the whitest character ever. If it had been someone who was masked, like Kabal, that'd be different.
What if someone remade "Aliens" and had Hicks and Hudson black, street talking hip-hop fans ?
Its just a silly direction.

I've loved the Mortal Kombat franchise since I was a kid, but this re imagining looks awesome. I love the grounded realism they've brought to the table especially with Reptile. Sad thing though is that Johnny Cage once again got owned.

Ed Boon thoughts on the teaser.
QuoteDestructoid: That was my next question, the fan made trailer, what did you think about that?
EB: I thought it was awesome. It turns out that there was a director who was just really into Mortal Kombat and said, "I'm going to take this approach to making it, I'm going to get this thing made, put it out there and get everybody excited. ... You know how long in comic books they have alternate universes, Batman, Superman, this is the exact same kind of category. Just another universe of Mortal Kombat, another imaging of it and I thought he did a really great job. It's a lot contemporary, it's like Se7en, Saw, like the really dark kind of stuff and it just had such personality everybody who sees it just wants to see that movie.

I don't know, WB is putting a ton of money into the franchise and Netherealm is creating a new MK game that might be the best in the series. It could rekindle interest in a full fledged movie, especially if this series does well.
If this guy does direct a new movie, I hope that it's different then the Rebirth series. I don't want the movie to be like the Clone Wars movie where the movie was just the first few or five episodes into one.

So Khan and Raiden might be in this afterall. Is MK: Rebirth going to be on a website or you have to download it?

Rayden is definately in, he's being played by that werewolf guy from Sanctuary.
i assume it'll be on a website, streamed, but i expect you'll be able to download high res version too, maybe
I was hoping that Christopher Lambert will return as Radien.

You should! Play by a BSG actor strangely enough.
BSG
a show that I'll probably never get to watch.
I'll go crazy if they make him look exactly like in the games. The old-school version that is.
Who should play Liu Kang?
I really don't know. Anyone believable, of course, but I really don't think I care, I mean, I'm not terribly excited for Kang to come out, nor did I ever even question him not being in this series.
That guy looks nothing like Raiden at all though?

I know but I still hope he has some Raiden looks to him. If he is a Thunder God in this then I will be happy.
Like the hat? :P
I wonder how they'll make him realistic....
Lu Kang too, no matter how cool flamethrowers on his arms would looks they prolly have to use supernatural stuff.
Or just make him a mink that doesn't use fire :(
Last year the director said that once they get into Outworld, or whatever, that the mysticism will begin to happen.
I hope he still decided on that for this series.
Still Lu Kang would likely come before Outworld.
Much earlier.
Well he should, I was only referring to when the magic and powers thing would end up happening.
Michael Jai White will so own in this.
Would be so cool to see him get his metallic arms, but first we need him with his real arms, kicking everyone's ass.

That's not that much of a big deal at this point.
it's like everyone buy me has forgotten than Mileena is a Tarkatan clone of Kitana, supposed to impersonate her to help overthrow the kingdom of Edenia so Shao Kahn can overthrow the nation, and become Emperor of all Outworld!
i'd say with a backstory like that, it's pretty important she's played by the same actress, or she should at least looks uncannily similar from the nose up, and the neck down.
Nope. I remember too. I can't tell, but if they have her Tarkatan face, that'd be pretty neat.
well if this pic is anything to go by

even Baraka is not going to have a Tarkatan mouth :D but i guess it might be done in post production, or perhaps that pic was taken between scenes without prosthetics.
it's possible that the fight isn't Kitana/Mileena at all, it looks like Kitana, but the other girl looks more like Jade.

Kevin Tancharoen Talks 'Mortal Kombat'
Director Kevin Tancharoen takes some time to talk about his upcoming Mortal Kombat web-series and tells us how it all came to be, explains the plot, talks about a DVD release, and gives us details on what other characters we can expect to see...
Kevin Tancharoen is currently in Vancouver working on his 'Mortal Kombat' web-series that is set to debut sometime in early April, but he took a little time to talk to the guys over at MovieWeb and he explains how this all came to be, what characters we might see, and a bit on the plot.
The interview was quite a long one so I left some questions out so be sure to head over to the source to read the full thing.
The Warner Bros. produced web-series and Jeri Ryan will reprise her role as Sonya Blade, and Michael Jai White will also return to the character of Jackson 'Jax' Briggs along with Darren Shahlavi as Kano, and Ian Anthony Dale is returning as Scorpion.

QuoteWe're going to do an episode with Scorpion and Sub-Zero, but it takes place in ancient Japan. The whole episode is in Japanese and you see the depth of Scorpion's family and clan and how they got murdered, etc. That one is going to be very epic, because of the iconic characters.

So the first episode is Scorpion vs Sub-Zero? f**k, I can't wait.
It's a good choice to start with them, considering they're the most iconic.
Nope... First Episode is Sonya and Jax vs Kano and the Black Dragon....
there'll be 9 episodes total.. with various lengths from 6 to 10 minutes..

What is up with Scorpion's mask? :\ Am I looking at it wrong or does it really have a big honking nose piece?
Not his actual mask i guess.. that's just the statue where his costume hangs on...

This is classic samurai mask used as part of samurai armor. I know that ninja have nothing to do with samurai (despite both being Japanese) ;D I think after Sub Zero kills Scorpion he`ll use more updated version of costume.
I would like to see Kabal soon. I think he would fit well into the MK: Rebirth story and he could be loyal member of the Black Dragon until he turned his back on Kano.
I hope it`s as far from MK rebirth as possible and as close to games and first film.
I still can't believe Liu Kang has not show up. They should get the actor who played Ryu from Street Fighter: Legacy as Liu Kang.
According to director him and Kung Lao are prepared for seson 2.
you know, it's not called Rebirth, that was just the Short, it's called Legacy, perhaps the thread title should be changed?

it was kind of a rhetorical question to everyone just to make sure they know, and to a mod/OP to change the title

At 55 second in, I'm thinking that Isn't baraka, because you can see Baraka has hair and this thing doesn't. It probably is Reptile, with all the sliminess and green skin.
On 0:55 is reptile. On 1:15 well, it might be Baraka (with hair) or old Shang Tsung. Actor who play Baraka is bald. That would indicate Baraka will be bald.

Ok. It`s definitelly Baraka with hair...
I just saw the first episode and I like it a lot. The plot does remind me a bit of Special Forces, but this episode blows Special forces out of the water. The action was great, the lighting was very good, and Jai White was great as Jax. I can't wait for Episode 2.

My issue with it is that it did not had that R rating feeling that the Rebirth short film did.
it does have a mature rating on youtube though, so i hope it will get more viscious as we see more viscious kombatants like reptile and baraka.
jax, stryker sonya and kano are tame in comparison.
The acting was a bit hammy, but other than that it was pretty well put together. I'll watch the next one.
When is the acting in MK not hammy?
Fair point. I guess I was expecting something with a little less scenery chewing in this case, given Tancharoen's comments about taking a more serious approach with the material, being influenced by Christopher Nolan's take on Batman, etc.
Not that it really got to me, it was just a little cheesier (in parts) than I imagined it would be.
QuoteMortal Kombat: Legacy, a new web series based on MK.
From what I understand, Season 1 will be the backstories of the chars, while Season 2 will be the tournament.
Episode 1 hit the interwebs today
But, does it live up to MK?
The episode opens with Kano and the Black Dragon shipping supplies. But not just any supplies,
cybernetics. The Lin Kuei are automatting their soldiers. It doesn't say this directly, but any MK fan will notice this.
Kano refers to the pieces as cybernetics, and Smoke's cyborg head is clearly seen in the boxes, along with
what looks like Cyrax's wrist console. Note that Kano does not currently have his cyber eye, but its foreshadowed.
He picks up a red cyborg eye from the boxes, and the soldiers tell him its a cybernetic replacement that
is capable of firing lazers. That and he is shown with his cyber face in the trailer for the series. Anyway,
zoom out to show Sonya observing them. Talks about what they're shipping and how many, then ends with
"Oh, and Jax...Kano's here.". Fade in to the Deacon City Police Department. Jax and Stryker are discussing
the plan, then head out.
After the intro, fade in to Sonya held captive. Kano appears and explains that he blocked the signal
and that her message didn't go through, not until he resent it "a few hours ago" to lure the police into
a trap. Sonya has been implied to be tied up for a few days. But, of course, Jax, Stryker, and the rest of
the police arrive. Kano and his men are ready to perform the sneak attack. Only Sonya knows its a trap, and
theres nothing she can do. Who will win?
To be perfectly honest, I loved this first episode. Those who claim it has nothing to do with MK
clearly aren't big fans, as the events shown DID happen offscreen in the games, about a year before the
first tournament. These first few episodes are prequels, backstories. The show is gory, but nothing
major has happened yet. The first episode shows a few people shot in the forehead and their brains on
the floor, but nothing really brutal yet. The acting was pretty decent, not the worst I've seen.
So what does it come down to? Its a hell of a lot better than Annihilation, and its too soon
to tell if its better than the first MK movie. Episode 2 goes online next Tuesday, April 19th, the US
release date of MK9. I'll be eagerly expecting it.
I don't think it was amazing, but I enjoyed it. I'll see the next few, sure.
I never saw the movie or played the games, so...
First film just have to be watched. It`s great and have well MK atmosphere well transfered into film ;)
The first MK movie was okay, it would have been better if it was R rated. It was too campy, and feel like a kung fu flick then a MK movie.
But Shang Tsung is great, Goro is great, Johny Cage is great etc. etc. Seriously this film is full of win.
(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages1.memegenerator.net%2FImageMacro%2F4932652%2FYOUR-SOUL-IS-MINE.jpg%3FimageSize%3DMedium%26amp%3BgeneratorName%3DShang-Tsung&hash=ea9ca4da2d5619e15f3d90262b64e23737d3159c)
Shang Tsung in the first movie was good but I wish they went for the older Shang Tsung, and that Cage was way too annoying. And that CG was bad and even for a 1995 film, they look bad.
Fun fact: Tom Woodruff, Jr work on the special effects for Goro in the first film.
I enjoyed cast of first MK except Kitana (but daim she looks good :D). About Goro, I thought it`s well known fact that ADI made him.
Still I can`t imagine better Shang Tsung.
(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmedia.comicbookmovie.com%2Fimages%2Fusers%2Fuploads%2F26320%2FJP-KOMBAT-1-articleLarge.jpg&hash=e3fb0b2c4f141ed8e7b757ec2f794fa97f547e2d)
Well in this light Baraka with hair looks extremally lame.
Trolololo... :D
He looks like a Elf then a Tarkatan. At least they ditch his look from the Rebirth trailer, and does not look like a Leatherface knock off. Still looks better then his look from "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation" (1997). Baraka look so fake in that movie, I feel like his mask was about to fall off when fighting.
I'm fine with his looks. Since this is a reimagining, he doesn't have to look like before.
I'd have taken off the hair though.
Lack of hair, more pronounced teeth and dark or dark and orange eyes. That would be Baraca.
Looks like a LOTR orc.

I just watched it. Well the direction is poor, this one had like 5 minutes (- the previous reminder) and there are two or three major plot holes in it. I hope next one will be better.
I liked it. It ramped up from the last one. Still too much use of slo mo which comes across as cheap rather than effective, and Michael Jai White's fight scenes are some of his worst but for what it is its still great with heaps of potential. Cant wait for the ninjas!
Same here.
Spoiler
As for this one: for where this granade came from?
Why it harmed Jax and did nothing to Kano who was alos close (if not closer) to explosion?
Why those doctor use dirty equipment to operate Kano?
And last but not least, why Kano who have his but kicked in every phisical confrontation with Jax constantly atacks him insted of running and trying to get advantage?
I personally loved the second episode.
My only problem with it is it was only 9 minutes counting a nearly 2 minute recap.
It was good, but I feel like the first episode was bit better.
You can easily tell the first two are one episode cut in half.
Nice second episode. I liked it.
Really enjoyed this one. A bit short but liked the ending...Kano, yeah.
I can't wait to see the realms soon since I want to see how they will pull off Shao Kahn soon.

This isn't really impressing me as much as the first trailer - not as gritty and brutal as I'd hoped.

I really don`t think he`ll have this demonic Kahn face and even Skull Mask`s fate is not certain. All in all it`s just cheap webseries. If they don`t have to make a costume, mask or characterisation they don`t do it.

fair enough, i haven't actually watched any of them apart from the first episode, even though i have them all on DVD, whcih i bought out of curiosity and then promptly stopped watching. maybe i should give them a go...... nah :D

...she killed the shit out of that poor guy :D lol
These episodes are being done with a small budget... with tight production schedules... considering those restrictions these are pretty damn decent...
although... baraka's design... really?
I liked it aside from Shao Kahn not having his helmet.
Personally this was my favourite episode yet
Baraka was pretty awesome.
I'll take this Baraka over the shit in MKA any day.
Episode 4 was an awesome combination of live action and comic book style. I really liked it 8) Only a shame we didn't see alot of the

mileena vs kitana fighting.

Baraka looks so much better here than in the production photo
I wonder if Quan Chi will have his MK4 outfit or MKDA design?

it wasn't much different, only the fact it was done when she was a baby rather than more recently. when you said that i was worried they made her the illegitimate child of baraka and sindel or something.
I don't like this Shao Kahn. He should be wearing the samurai skull helmet and carry around his big hammer.
... and be twice as big as standard human... Oh and the demon face would be nice, yeah..
When I saw Shao Khan in the video, I was like "Is that him?". He started to remind me on how Bison look in Legend of Chun Li.

I like that Shao Kahn doesn't look like his video game counterpart. His entire outfit is ridiculous, and looks ridiculous in real life. See MK:A.

I'd say the problem lies not in his appearance, but his presence. Shao Kahn didn't have enough of a menacing presence in this short.
Everything in MKA look cheap. I would not be surprise if they got his mask from a Halloween store. I think his mask can work if they do it right this time.

f**k no, you're insane. How the hell can you even make that comparison? Did you even see The Legend of Chun Li? At least here I can tell Kahn is Kahn, Legend of Chun Li you couldn't tell Bison was Bison, it's not even close.
Seriously you could? Well I couldn`t. No demonic face, no helmet, no imposing structure or this deap bass voice. I`m disapointed, same with Shang Tsung.
Yeh agreed. This shao kahn is nothing like the game. Its hard to tell if he can hold his own with this little screen time. Same goes with Shang Tsung.
I gotta say, I was slightly let down by Kahn as well. The costume's okay, but I'd be delighted to see that helmet at some point. It's an iconic part of the character, yo.

Nope. Next episodes are for Sub Zero vs Scorpion, Cyrax vs Sektor, and Raiden. The director believes that Liu Kang has had a good day in the sun... (with 2 movies as a lead character) time to let some of the other fighters shine as well.
That he'd be right. Lui Kang is boring as shit.

I still like the Rebirth trailer better since I feel like it was more put together and feels darker. MKL is great but it feels like a cheap TV show. If a movie was made then I want it to be totally new then link to the MKL series.
As an outsider of the games, I have to say that while the MK shorts are fun diversions, I'm kind of losing interest. I'm not sure what it wants to be. I'm seeing various fight scenes with characters I know nothing about and nothing to tie them together so far. I liked the story from the Cage episode but the ending didn't give me anything. I'll keep watching, but while the trailer for the modernized version looked promising, this just looks meandering.
Wasn't sure about episode 4, didn't really like the animated/comic book style scenes mixed in with the liva action and even though Baraka didn't look all that bad I just personally didn't really like the design. Shoa Khan was a disapointment, looked underwhelming. I know these are shorts and are supposed to be this brief but I do think the episodes are suffering due to their short running time, I just start getting into it and then it ends. I actually preferred the 'pitch' that was MK:Rebirth to Legacy.

New episode is out. It`s as medicore as rest of them. Slowly loosing interest. Let`s hope ninjas and cyborgs will be much better.
The unnecessary padding through meaningless recaps and 3 minute long credits are pissing me off.
The opening fight between Kitana and Mileena was entertaining the rest of it was meh.
It's just so short, might as well just give us the whole episode. Same with with the first two parts.

This. It's very annoying. These last 2 episodes would've worked better as single release.... same with the first 2 about Sonya and Jax... still cant wait for next week. Maybe it'll be Rayden or... will they give us Scorpion and Sub Zero? :)
Four episodes left. There is still Raiden, Cyrax and Sektor, Sub Zero and Scorpion to cover. I hope those involving Cyborgs and Ninjas are longer.
I dont know why they feel the need to recap a 3min ep that aired last week. C'mon give us a little more credit than that.
Why couldn't Kitana and Mileena be wearing their outfits from the games?
It feels like Pink Ranger vs Yellow Ranger fight here
Pretty good episode IMO. I still wish Shao Khan had his mask or at least have face that looks like this:

i think comparing him to ghengis kahn or something would be a better comparison,
he should be a warlord, the MK Legacy Kahn feels like, i dunno Macbeth or something.
Dunno, he just doesn't seem like he could tear anyone apart (or lift that huge ass hammer of his).

Lambet in MK was also different Raiden then one in games but still was believable and had enormous amount of chrisma. This here? It`s changed beyond recognition. And where is his divinity? The guy out there is weaker then most of standard humans shown so far. There is no Raiden here, no mortal kombat not even any common sense.

He did in the games aswell. In the games he only retained a fraction of his power, in his "true" form he was immortal, and invincible.

yeah i liked the episode, probably the best acted and written episode yet, and i think it definately borrows from Thor/Ultimate Thor, if it wasn't clearly filmed before Thor came out, i would be saying it was a complete rip off.

Anywho.... final episode with Cyrax vs Sektor is going up next week.. special appearence by Hydro! (who? you might ask? He was a komik book only character.. never appeared in the official games... but he did appear in the fan created mugen games :D)
My issue with the episode is that it seem confusing is it was Quan Chi under disguise as Sub Zero. Did Scorpion really fight Sub Zero or just Quan Chi under disguise?
just Quan Chi under disguise...
Wrong. He fought Sub-Zero and nearly killed him. Quan Chi showed up after Sub-Zero's clan had attacked the village and froze Scorpion. Then he revealed himself and offered Scorpion the chance of revenge.
Wrong :D According to the games Sub Zero and the Lin Kuei never attacked Scorpion's village... it was all a move by Quan Chi to gain control of Scorpion... and Sub Zero (who becomes Noob Saibot after his death at the hands of Scorpion.)
by moving these guys against each other, Quan Chi gains 2 powerful fighters... and the earthrealm loses 2 powerful fighters... making Shang Tsung very happy.... wich explains his presence at the end.... those were his soldiers.... not Lin Kuei's...
at least that's what i gathered from the short.... eh. Wright? Rong? :D
i liked the new quan chi, but i'm undecided on his tattoo
my biggest issue is that quan chi has inexplicably got the ability to take other forms, when that is shang tsung's trademark, quan chi is mostly only good for making portals.

Cyrax is lookin good :)
Is..
Is that the same model from the game?
Certainly looks like it!
I'm disappointed.
Classic Cyrax is better IMO.
Bring back the MotoX armour!

I'd say that's true of most of the characters.

Wrong. He fought Sub-Zero and nearly killed him. Quan Chi showed up after Sub-Zero's clan had attacked the village and froze Scorpion. Then he revealed himself and offered Scorpion the chance of revenge.
In games what happen was that in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, Sub-Zero killed Scorpion with the spin rip from I can remember since they where both where hired by Quan Chi to steal a map from the Shaolin temple. Afterwards, Quan Chi resurrected Scorpion and told him that Sub-Zero and the Lin Kuei are the ones who killed the Shirai Ryu, so he end up killing Sub Zero in the first MK game (Who would later become Noob Saibot).
Scorpion never knew that Quan Chi killed his family until the end of MK4:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-esEltB-_js# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-esEltB-_js#)
I really hate the whole idea of Quan Chi really being Sub Zero in the Legacy series. The whole idea behind it made so confusing, they could keep it simple like in the games with Sub Zero killing him then having Quan Chi bring him back to life to go after him in the tournament.
that voice acting is so bad..... :D

The Cut scenes in the PS1 and PC port of MK4 where much better. The N64 version used the arcade cut scenes from what I can remember.
I still hope to see Smoke in the next episode maybe.

from what i read... no Smoke.. but there's another cyborg ninja... named Hydro, played by the same guy who is playing Cyrax. (it's a reference to the fan made mugen game) http://moviemikes.com/2011/05/interview-with-shane-warren-jones/ (http://moviemikes.com/2011/05/interview-with-shane-warren-jones/)

There may be a Smoke-centric episode on a 2nd season....
He was from the comics IIRC? I remember that he had the same powers as Sub-Zero but with Water instead of Ice.
yeah he started in the comics.. but he only became a cyborg in the mugen game IIRC.
Could be wrong though.

Bad News: there will be no new episode next week. #mortalkombatlegacy
Good News: we will premiere the new episode at Comic Con!!!! #mortalkombatlegacy
This episode better be epic if they push it back until July (I think that's when the comic con starts).

I have a feeling they are going to make an announcement on a movie at comic con, that might be the reason why they are giving him extra time to work on this.
I always found it odd to release a "short" episode at comic con if there wasn't more to it.
The only issue with the movie being tie in to the Legacy series is that people would have to watch the rebirth series to know the characters. I doubt anyone outside the fan base knows or watches the series. I want a good MK movie for once.

I think it was great and worth the wait. I think the Sub Zero & Scorpion episode where the best in the whole season.
Excellent end to the season. Can't wait for more.
One word.
'Escellent'
This is the best one of this series, looks amazing.
The fatality was badass.
Indeed it was. Really, I wasn't the biggest fan of this series, but this episode just got me. The action and atmosphere was just flawless. If they continue it, I'm most definitely in!
If they do a 2nd series Warner Bros needs to throw some more dollars in the budget.....
Here's hoping for a cool movie from this cast and director :)
Before the series began, Kevin tossed around the idea of a Season 2, and mentioned Kabal. So this may not be over just yet
That was worth the wait. Pure Mortal Kombat.

i hope the second series is actually on TV, even if it's only 6x 45 minute episodes, that would still be 3 times more than 9x 10 minute episodes
I just caught up on all of these and wow, it's nice to see some attention towards Mortal Kombat with this well-done series. Even for a limited budget, they were able to get some good acting and the fighting and effects were fantastic.
I even enjoyed the weirdness with characters like Raiden, and really appreciate the creativity that's gone into this.
I'll bet this gets some old flabby mouths watering at Fox and Warner Bros. for some $$$. If they rebooted the series with a movie of this quality, it would be a huge success. It is the decade of the remake, might as well do it now!
Could'nt we just bring back the cast of the first movie, and pretend the second one didn't exist? :-[
no because they'd be ooooold

I liked the first one quite a bit. Annihilation was aptly named, due to it annihilating any credibility the MK movies had :(
If they mixed the first movie and these shorts, we would have an out-of-control success, ah think.
Neither MK movies to me where good. The first movie was okay, it would have been better if it was R rated and did not feel too campy. I want a MK movie that is dark and gritty like the Rebirth trailer was but still keep the feeling of the games. One reason why I like rebirth over legacy was because it feel and look more professional to me.

New Line Reboots 'Mortal Kombat'
New Line Cinema is bringing back Mortal Kombat, setting up a live action reboot of the martial arts-heavy franchise that will be written by Oren Uziel and directed by Kevin Tancharoen. The director wouldn't be the first guy one would think of for an chopsocky action film given a resume that includes Fame and, most recently, Glee: The Documentary, the 3D concert movie that didn't do much business this summer. But both of those guys have earned the work, since it was their unauthorized viral short that breathed life into a dormant franchise.
Uziel wrote and Tancharoen directed the eight-minute short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, which starred Michael Jai White as Jax, Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade, Matt Mullins as Johnny Cage, Ian Anthony Dale as Scorpion and Lateef Crowder as Baraka. Tancharoen did this with the idea that he could prove himself to Warner Bros as an action director and reboot the movie franchise. Initially, Warner Games, which put out a videogame reboot in April, 2011, wasn't amused and sought to shut down the effort. But Tancharoen's effort created enough of a demand when it leaked online that the studio's digital division, Warner Premiere, made a deal with him to generate a 10-episode web series. Those episodes began airing on YouTube in April 2011.
New Line then went to Tancharoen and Uziel and put together the movie. Mortal Kombat premiered in 1995, and the original film grossed $122 million worldwide. Interest waned with the 1997 sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, which grossed only $51.3 million worldwide. The studio is keeping the plot under wraps. Uziel wrote The Kitchen Sink, a mashup of vampires, zombies and aliens that made the Black List, sold to Sony Pictures and producer Matt Tolmach and is now being developed as a directing vehicle for Moneyball star Jonah Hill.

I really liked what Uziel and Tancharoen did with Mortal Kombat: Rebirth. It was an interesting take on the franchise, and while Legacy didn't quite follow the principles set by Rebirth, I liked it a lot. I'm looking forward to seeing a proper movie made by these guys.
I still remember that they film a scene after the second movie with Quan Chi that would lead up for a 3rd movie. Looks like those plans where scrap after the second movie being a box office failure.
I often wonder why they cut that scene out of the movie even though it was filmed.
I hope they star filming soon. I think most of the legacy cast will be back.
I hope they make Shao Khan something more intimidating in the movie

Mortal Kombat first look: Inside the R-rated reboot, fatalities and all
https://ew.com/movies/mortal-kombat-first-look-lewis-tan-joe-taslim-hiroyuki-sanada/
I don't know much about Mortal Kombat, having only played Mortal Kombat vs. DC and only seen Annihilation. But this looks pretty good to me.
The images look great. Really want to see some footage to get more of an opinion but the images and quotes have me hopeful.
The character of Cole Turner played by Lewis Tan is a worry. That character was in a previously leaked script and I didn't find his arc that great. The script in general wasn't great. I'm hoping they re-worked this enough to fix those flaws. I am looking forward to this though.
I still remember watching first Mortal Kombat (1995) at cinema. Time flies.

The different revisions of the script all got progressively "better" as they went along, the most egregiously stupid stuff getting dropped or rewritten. But Cole is still dumb and Outworld still has the shittiest roster.

This looks good. They're at least delivering on the gore and action. Most of the cast can kick some serious ass in real life.
Well damn, that trailer was awesome. And they seem to have changed quite a bit from the different drafts. We still have to put up with random new character Cole Whathisface, though.
Holy crap that looks so good!

Some noticeable changes were made. Especially based on the opening scene and the fight scene between Scorpion and Sub-Zero.. very interesting!

Sanada is in the outfit. So he won't just be in the intro and the ending.
It's been a while I've seen such a slick trailer for what will surely be a completely dire film.
But will you see it anyway though?
Shit no.
Never watched any MK movies.
The Second Born did dance routine to that song where they shout 'Mortal Kombat!' a lot which was pretty cool though.
I was into the first few games and the film landed at the perfect age of 10.
This looks fun and gory so why not?
I'm onboard for this, the trailer was pretty great and I'm a fan of the games.

Yes. That was an awesome game.
I wonder what will be cheesier, Godzilla vs Kong or this one... Obviously cheese don't exclude fun !
Based on the comments from the writer/director/producer it seems like they're really trying to ground this and not have it be cheesy like the 90's film. Obviously we'll have to see the finished product to judge it fairly but based on the footage released it looks like they're taking it seriously.

I understand, but it will be hard to make this not cheesy when it's based on an already ultra cheesy game (that I quite like by the way). Hard doesn't mean impossible though.

Quote from: VarietyAs Warner Bros. awaits the April 23 release of the much anticipated "Mortal Kombat," it sounds like the studio is hopeful the film will mark the rebirth of the franchise. Joe Taslim, who plays the villainous Sub-Zero, tells me that he's signed on for four more installments if the series moves forward. "If this one's successful, maybe we do more," Taslim says on this week's episode of the "Just for Variety" podcast. He remembers playing "Mortal Kombat" for the first time when he was about 12 years old. "I was born in South Sumatra. We were poor so I didn't have the console because it's expensive," says Taslim, now 39. "I went to my friend's house every day to play the game. But you get there and there are like 10 kids lining up. Who wins keeps playing...so it takes me to get to my part like 40 minutes."

If only the whole movie could have had the same tone as the first ten minutes...
I liked Kano's delivery of lines in the movie.
My main complaint (this issue arises in a lot of fight scenes in all movies) is that certain fight scenes ended too quickly and no build up to use of "fatality."
I wish they'd stop with the game dialogue. We get it: it's based on a video game. That doesn't mean they have to check boxes with lines like "flawless victory" or "get over here." Sometimes the visuals are enough to make the point.
Christ, that was horrible experience. I lost nearly two hours of my life. Irredeemable.

I'm seeing reviews ranging from "I love it" to "why God why". Hmm.
This would have been a perfect movie for Zack Snyder to direct. He could have even made it DCEU-compatible.

I'm the opposite, I was laughing every time they did something from the games.
I preferred the tone of the prologue. Hiroyuki Sanada elevated the material to the point that I thought it might actually be played straight.
So the rest of the flick isn't like that? The opening looked decent - and not just 'decent for a video game movie'.
It's as if halfway through Shane Black took over as director.
Shane Black is a good director, when he has good material to work from.
A film that is like an interpretation of ADD. it's a wonderful mess, but like local said, the tone of the first 10 would have been preferable.

I wish he did. At least I would be dead. Now I have to live with this experience till rest of my life. First Mortal Kombat is 26 years old and it's miles away better than this one. But I must say that cast is decent. Everything else is utterly horrible.

Maybe because I went in with no expectations but I really enjoyed it. Loved Kano and the fights were pretty decent.
They did try to squeeze in quite a few things which made it jumbled at times and some of the actors were questionable at their performances.....but I thought it still overcame its hiccups. I'd say it's worth a watch.
I would have preferred more of a tournament environment and something we don't see in the MK movies are rounds between fights. Not all fights have to go past Round 1 but it would be cool to see some cornering, strategy discussed.
Also as mentioned before but wasn't a big fan of the actor playing Shang Tsung. His presence on screen wasn't threatening to me.

Agreed. It wasn't until about halfway through that I realized there wasn't going to be the actual tournament and although I was a little bummed, I did like the overall approach as to why.
A time wise, I had issues with Lui Kang and Shang Tsung as well...but I can actually say I hope they do another and maybe improve on them.

That's my point, he didn't have good material to work from so the end result was mediocre.
He can also be a good writer (Lethal Weapon, the Long Kiss Goodnight, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man 3, The Nice Guys) so I don't know what happened with The Predator aside from studio meddling I guess?
To be fair I think Fred Dekker also has a fair amount of responsibility in this.
Anyways !
I liked it, but a CGI stunt double would have been a better actor than Lewis Tan. And the whole chosen one thing is super weak, but at least they fixed most of the other major problems with the scripts.

Uh...
No....just no...
I always thought of Miz for the Johnny Cage role...
I was half-expecting some talent scout to show up and ask Cole if he's ever considered acting in martial arts movies, then tell him he needed a stage name...
"It's probably under my legal name. Kenshi Cole Young."
I actually liked the introduction of the mark and arcana to explain why otherwise ordinary humans have superpowers like in the game. I'm not sure they were executed with perfection though.
Spoiler
Kano's eye and Jax's arms should have been technological, not magical. Kung Lao's hat could just be a hat that he's learned to use as a weapon through extensive training. All of these characters have other abilities in the games that could have been their arcana instead.
Watched it last night. Depending on how you position yourself towards what a movie should be, it can be fun or absolute shit. Or in between, that's where I'm at.
I have no knowledge of Mortal Kombat outside of some youthful button mashing and I enjoyed it.
It's a proper mindless action movie. Some of the fight scenes were dull and uninspired but some of them were just beautiful. Some of the jokes fell flat but I actually laughed out loud several times. Kano was great.
My biggest gripe is it's the kind of movie where you don't realise the last twenty minutes was the climax and it's over now. That was lame.
I completely agree, there's enough stuff to be satisfied and enough stuff that makes your eyes roll.
I was helped by watching it with someone who was clearly loving every minute of it, so I found myself not sticking to the annoying bits too much.

I was surprised he wasn't in it more but I think they might have done that on purpose for a few reason regarding the story and all. Also that it would probably take away from a lot of the other characters having him in it more, which it would ha.
I'm thinking I'd they do another, he'll probably have more of a prominent role.
I just saw it this Friday. Ugh. This movie was a tragic waste. Just plain awful. I cannot fathom why its so hard to make a good MK film. Really, I can't. The source material is rich and the characters have compelling stories. This movie failed on both those fronts. For the love of god, it had the look and feel of one of those terrible CW comic book shows.

WBHE Fights Cosmic Peril in 'Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms'
By Mercedes Milligan
Published on June 23, 2021
The fate of the universe once again hangs in the balance as warriors come together for one final clash in Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms, an all- new, feature-length film produced by Warner Bros. Animation in coordination with NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The film arrives from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment on Digital, Blu-ray (sRP $29.98 U.S./$39.99 Canada) and 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack ($39.99 U.S./$44.98 Can.) on August 31.
Pre-orders will be available for the Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Combo Pack beginning June 28, and for Digital starting on July 8.
Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms picks up shortly after the explosive finale of Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge, the 2020 blockbuster hit that initiated these animated films – which are based on one of the most popular videogame franchises in history. In Battle of the Realms, our team of heroes are besieged by the enemy forces of Shao Kahn – forcing Raiden and his group of warriors into a deal to compete in a final Mortal Kombat that will determine the fate of the realms. Now our heroes must travel to Outworld in order to defend Earthrealm and, simultaneously, Scorpion must find the ancient Kamidogu before it's used to resurrect the One Being – which would mean certain destruction of all things in the universe. Time is short and the stakes are high in this action-packed continuation of the Mortal Kombat journey.
Joel McHale (Community, Stargirl) and Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter, Batman: Gotham by Gaslight) return to their lead roles as Hollywood star-turned-fighter Johnny Cage and all-business warrior Sonya Blade, respectively. Also returning for the sequel are Jordan Rodrigues (Lady Bird, The Fosters) as Liu Kang; Patrick Seitz (Mortal Kombat X, Aggretsuko, Naruto: Shippuden) as Scorpion & Hanzo Hasashi; Artt Butler (Her, Star Wars: The Clone Wars) as Shang Tsung & Cyrax; Robin Atkin Downes (The Strain, Batman: The Killing Joke) as Shinnok & Reiko; Dave B. Mitchell (Mortal Kombat 11, Call of Duty franchise) as Raiden, Kintaro & Sektor; Ikè Amadi (Mass Effect 3, Mortal Kombat 11) as Jax Briggs & One Being; Grey Griffin (The Loud House, Young Justice, Scooby-Doo franchise) as Kitana, Satoshi Hasashi & Mileena; and Fred Tatasciore (Robot Chicken, Family Guy) as Shao Kahn.
New to the Mortal Kombat Legends voice cast are Matthew Mercer (Critical Role, Justice Society: World War II) as Stryker & Smoke; Bayardo De Murguia (Tiny Pretty Things) as Sub-Zero/Kuai Liang; Matt Yang King (Mortal Kombat 11, Justice League vs. The Fatal Five) as Kung Lao; Paul Nakauchi (Carmen Sandiego, Overwatch) as Lin Kuei Grandmaster; Emily O'Brien (Days of Our Lives, Constantine: City of Demons) as Jade; and Debra Wilson (World of Warcraft: Shadowlands, MADtv) as D'Vorah.
Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms is directed by Ethan Spaulding (Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge, Batman: Assault on Arkham) from a script by Jeremy Adams (Supernatural, Justice Society: World War II) and based on the videogame created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. Rick Morales (Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders, Batman vs. Two-Face) is producer. Jim Krieg (Batman: Gotham by Gaslight) is producer. Executive producer is Sam Register. Ed Boon (NetherRealm Studios) is creative consultant.
Special features:
The God and the Dragon: Battling for Earthrealm (Featurette) – Go behind the scenes and inside the creative process of bringing Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms to action-packed life on screen.
Voices of Kombat (Featurette) – Join Joel McHale, Jennifer Carpenter, and the cast as they detail the process of creating unique and compelling voices for the larger than life characters in the film.
Kombat Gags: Gag Reel (Featurette) – Step inside the VO booth with the cast of the film for all of the flubbed lines and outrageously improvised lines from the cutting room floor.
Audio Commentary (Audio Only) – Producer Rick Morales and screenwriter Jeremy Adams take the audience inside the art of writing and animating the film in this feature length audio commentary.

Are they adding the Mortal Kombat tournament?
Interesting casting choice

On one hand I love Karl Urban and will support him in anything, on the other hand he isn't who first springs to mind when one says "Johnny Cage".
He's gonna send Cole to the iso cubes.
That's an odd choice. Not sure who I'd choose of today's actors, to be honest. Nobody is the modern day version of JCVD.
I hope Karl Urban leans out a bit for the role and works on his kicks.

He would have made a magnificent Kano though.
I remember watching first MK at the cinema. They will never beat this fight.

Preach.
Although the Kano we did get was pretty fantastic.

I can dig it. Jade was my fighter of choice in MK11.
They should just make MKxDC vs MarvelxCapcom and take my money.

Trick question. It's not available on Blu-ray, only DVD.

I had mixed feelings about the recent MK movie. On one hand it was r rated, had faithful fatalities, well cast with Liu Kang, Kung lao, Scorpion and Subzero, but the whole arcana thing, a focus on an original character and character deaths before the tournament just didn't seem right to me. And whatever you may feel about paul w anderson, the original MK movie had something.
