QuoteWe've gathered a team of industry veterans from games like Fallout: New Vegas, Mass Effect, and BioShock to create a faithful reboot of the classic game we all know and love. In System Shock, you'll take on the role of a resourceful hacker as you explore and survive the terrors of Citadel Station brought on by a rogue AI named SHODAN.
To ensure this reboot is as true to the original as possible, we've been collaborating with the original developers of System Shock 1. Understanding what they would do differently and keep the same has helped us to refresh a classic in ways Looking Glass Studios would have.
We're making System Shock for gamers that missed the opportunity to appreciate the original, and for the dedicated fans of System Shock 1. We love talking to our backers, so please help support this project and share your thoughts as we make the best System Shock for all of you!

Been following this for awhile. Looking good!
You tellin' me there's never been a thread till now?
I really have to finish the original. :D
I've always only been vaguely aware of this series but the remake looks pretty damn intense. Definitely going to pick this one up.
Played this before the alpha wasn't that impressed...
but where the hell is SS3? last update on that was may 2016 i think lol
As much as i loved the Bioshock Trilogy (started the series on PS3, switched to 360 for the sequels and then played through entire series again on PS4), they have paled next to my love of System Shock II on the PC.
So, having never played the original System Shock...i have mixed feelings about this.
Will it feel dated compared to what came after it or refreshing?.
Considering System Shock 2 wasn't really System Shock 2 until later in the development, i'd say it won't matter too much.
Like Hicks I was aware of the series. I like the atmosphere in this, it reminds me of Isolation. The combat and enemies don't do much for me. I hope that changes with more resources in the kickstarter. If all that improves I'll be glad to play this classic remade.
I am a big fan of this series. System Shock 2 is my favorite game of all time. Only played the first one very briefly so it would be great to finally get to finish it. Also, there is a demo and its great!

Is that available for download anywhere?
It was at one point in Steam but it seems to have disappeared from the internet. I am quite sure I didn't imagine playing it in 2016. It was a playable first level of the game with about 15 minutes of gameplay.
This link might work. https://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=9534.0 (https://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=9534.0)
Anyone else see a connection between this and the Giger art? It was the first thing that stuck out to me. Maybe the original Shodan image is based on something like this.

Also if I recall correctly, the Alpha was critically panned because it played like a bad FPS. The trailer doesn't look like it deviates at all from the Alpha, which might mean it bodes poorly for the game.

I hope not. I love the atmosphere in the trailer. However, I cannot deny the combat and enemy A.I. seemed underwhelming.
I might have to get this since the movement controls in the original are painfully dated. As in, having to click/drag the mouse in a certain direction to turn dated. 2 is great, would be better if it was less ball bustingly hard and the last two levels and the ending were't crap.

Agreed that the ending is bad and there's a big difficulty spike in the last levels. The game just throws Rumblers at you like there's no tomorrow. It helps if you have a good build, an assault rifle with AP rounds does well.
I think the game is at its best in the first 3 Von Braun levels.
It seems that the remake has failed, too bad:
Although I am a fan, I did not put any money in the Kickstarter.
If anyone did their research into who Nightdive Studios are, they shouldn't be surprised in the least.
Why remake the original? They should have done a third game instead if you ask me.
A third game is in development as well, but it might actually be in development hell:

Remastering an original game is OK when you don't change much and just focus on it working well on modern systems (kind of like they did with Grim Fandango: Remastered).

The controls and general interface haven't aged very well, for one thing.
I really really wish this had gone somewhere. It was one of the greatest games I ever played.
Second only to CALL OF PRIPYAT.
It's a work in progress.
It looks like we may finally have a release window for this remake. Fingers crossed.
QuoteWelcome to a New Year, Hackers
After our return from Gamescom we've been hesitant to share anything so as not to spoil any remaining surprises we have in store. However, we've picked a few last things to share before our quickly approaching launch window of March, 2023.
https://www.gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/body_default/public/2023/01/03/050588d0/steam.jpg
As some of you have already pointed out this is not our first time announcing a tentative launch window, but over the past few years much has changed - the scope and scale of the project has evolved dramatically and with Prime Matter joining the project it's enabled us to focus on quality-of-life improvements, bug fixing, and localization support - the last major steps towards releasing a game we're all incredibly proud of. This has also given us time to go back and polish various aspects of the game that needed that extra shine.
You can read the rest from the game's latest Kickstarter update (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1598858095/system-shock/posts/3699917).
Oh man I thought this project died.
Considering it's supposed to be released in two months time, and I've pre-ordered it, I hope not!
I hope it succeeds so we can get a remake of System Shock 2, and maybe with a proper ending.
A Demo of the remake is out now, and looks good on Youtube (haven't played it yet)
You have to be kidding me. I am convinced that this game is never coming out.

Only a few months more!
A two month delay isn't too bad. Feels like an actual release date as opposed to a placeholder.
I have wanted to play the first System Shock for about 25 years. It will be of course different, as it's a re-imagining, but still very excited for it.
I've tried to play the first a few times. Never got very far. It's a very advanced game for its time, and that means very complicated controls.
Same here, I've played the original for like 10 minutes and promised to come back to it, but never did.
I have finished the second game something like 7 times in my lifetime and it's one of my favorite games ever.
The original is still one of the best games I've ever played.
So, I have high hopes for this remake.
It looks like the wait has paid off.
I cannot believe its finally out, after all these years
Is it as needlessly convoluted, fiddly and annoying as the original two?
Extremely doubtful.

Are the other two games you've played pachinko machines? A good plot is no excuse for how awful an experience System Shock is to actually play.
I hear that said about the first one a lot, particularly the maze like level layouts, but not the sequel.
Glad it's finally coming out. Although since I ordered a physical copy years ago, I'll probably have to wait just a bit longer to get my key, haha.
I couldn't even get past the first few rooms in the first game because of how it played. 2 was a bastard at first but I acclimated eventually. The weapons degredation is still shit, though, and the RPG elements can really f**k you over if you don't put points exactly where it wants you to.
Watching a friend stream this and the sound is glitched to absolute f**k.

Bingo. Imagine making an RPG lite where you're given total freedom to build a character, but if you do it any way except how the devs think you should have, the game becomes unpayable.

That would be a "no" and a "please don't be a douche nozzle" just because you didn't like it.
I have never played System Shock.
It would be noteworthy if you had played anything at this point.
Any recommendations?

I really wanted to like it, because everyone always talks about how good the narrative is (and I have no reason to doubt that it is), but it's literally, physically unplayable.
Idk fam this remake looks fire.

I'm sure I'll have a device that can play it by the time it's as old as the original.
MUTHUR was kind enough to get me a new Alienware gaming laptop with a 3060 vidya card but I've only been playing Isolation. 😂

Thank you for the timetable update. :'(
I'm very happy about the ending song: Public Image Ltd., The Order Of Death.
One of my favorite songs ever and very fitting to the game!
https://twitter.com/NightdiveStudio/status/1767596823555051906
Reworked finale? Besides the song, the final fight felt a bit off.
I hope it reaches the PC as a DLC or free update as well.
I believe they're updating the PC version with the new ending and updates at some point after the console release.
Sounds good, but System 2 Remaster and System Shock 3 need to get some focus as well.
