Title: Questions for Dan Trachtenberg (Prey Director)
Post by: Corporal Hicks on Sep 06, 2022, 03:18:26 PM
You know the drill. We're going to be recording a podcast with Dan this week. Any question, throw 'em up, and any that I haven't already got and think will produce a good response from Dan get thrown into the podcast!

What was the impetus for Prey's story in concept? Did it start as a Predator story or as Naru's or Kee's story that then incorporated a Predator?

How did you want to upend more prevalent and incorrect depictions of native Americans?

What's your favourite Alien film?

What's your favourite Predator film?

Can we get the film on 4K Blu-ray pretty please? With an extensive behind the scenes if possible.

It's my understanding that Dan was developing his movie before The Predator came out. So my question is this: was there any possibility of FOX/Disney scrapping the project altogether when The Predator was met with largely negative reviews ?

Was there ever a scene planned with Feral taking a human trophy?

Was the decision to go CGI for the face difficult to make?

Is there a gorier version of the net kill?

Are you planning on a sequel?

Do you have any ideas on how Greyback ends up with the pistol?

Were there any sequences or ideas that didn't make it into the finished film that you particularly liked and wish you could have gotten to see?

Was the idea of going with a "primitive Predator" for this film something you had in mind to begin with, or was it something that you decided on during the development process? And was that decision made because of the more primitive time period the film is set in, or simply because it's a cool idea for a Predator that we hadn't seen depicted in live-action before?

Did you consider any other time periods or locations for the film to take place in, or was the basic concept of "Native Americans vs Predator" one you were set on from the beginning? And if you did consider any other settings for the film, what were they?

Definitely looking forward to listening to this one!

Do you believe the success of Prey will warrant a blu-ray release in the future or will it go the mostly common way of Disney/Hulu movies and shows and remain just a streaming exclusive?

How does it feel to make a movie in a franchise with passionate fans while trying to show something new? Does the fanbase scare away fresh ideas that you would like to bring to the table?

How do you approach a movie like the predator? When taking into consideration that the main antagonist is both a creature and a character?

Since the movie was so well received by the fans, critics, and the general audience, have your idea for a sequel changed its scope for something bigger than before?

Besides the first movie, what is your favorite predator design?

Can we expect to see deleted scenes or a longer version in a future blu ray release?

You mentioned that you expected a sort of a "predator bible" after not receiving anything, did you read any of the comics to get any "inspiration"?

Have you considered making grayback the main antagonist?

Considering the movie was supposed to be kept more of a secret, was the decision to show the Predator on screen very early in the final film changed at any point -  I.e - from the bear reveal?

In other words was the structure of the movie always the same or was the pacing/order of the film before the announcement slightly different.

Would you ever consider the Predator as the main protagonist of a Predator film?

What other eras would you personally would love to see for a Predator film?

Since you played Predator Hunting Grounds, who is your favorite Predator/Fireteam class?

Do you have any plans to show how the Elder Predator Greyback will end up with the pistol?

Why go for a new subspecies then expanding on the original design?

You think Naru would try to recover some of the gear Feral left behind such as the shield or speargun for her own uses?

With the dust finally being settled, what is going through the minds of everyone in the tribe once they see a closer look of Feral's head that Naru brought over? I'd think there would have been more of huge "wtf is that?!?!" moment since this ain't anything they ever seen before.

Since Predators adore a good fight, why did Feral chicken out in the last moment when fighting Taarbe to stab him in the back? I'd figure that due to being a worthy opponent, he'd want to best him in a fair fight and take his skull.

What was going through Feral's mind when he confronted Naru who held him at gunpoint in the trapper camp? It seemed like he was hesitating for a moment or trying to figure her out, which was odd seeing he was keen on ripping her apart in the meadow chase scene.

How was the speargun and medical kit on his back attached to him due to no visible leather straps and holsters to hold them in place?

Some friends were going back and forth about the Predator's hands shown in some behind the scenes pics that were shared in social media, are those hand beans or finger prints?

First of all I would like to thank Dan and his team for an awesome and brilliant Predator flick, it was long awaited.

- He was a fan of the original Predator. Any particular scene he loved personally as a film maker?

- Was the Predator design a collective input from the creative team or it was his final decision on the design front and were the fingers designed stubby on purpose?

- Did he like Predator 2? (seeing the pistol throwback)

- If a sequel is planned is it going to be a lot bigger or epic now that the response to Prey is very positive? (Please mention Predator vs Samurai's :) )

Aimed more at Feral and his group

- How old is Feral supposed to be here?
- What is the bone part of his mask made of? Specifically the creature if there was any input on that.
- Is the speargun new at this point or new to Feral? On my rewatch right now I'm counting four times he's missed while he's not wearing the helmet. Is this meant to show inexperience?
- How many other Predators are active during Prey, there's a few ships. Are they like Feral?
- The credits show more ships arriving, how long after Naru returning to camp was this?

One more, how does it feel to have made the best Predator film since the original, and a unique beast all itself?

1) What was the hardest sequence to conceive, shoot, and edit?
2) What elements of Comanche culture were added after the script was finished or during production?
3) Before shooting did you meet with any of the other Predator directors and get their advice? If so, what was it?
