............why did David poison Holloway which resulted in him being infected? David seemed to be contradicting himself the whole movie, helping them, then infecting them (ok just one person he infected)

It is shown that David is communicating with Weyland via the neuro visor.  Weyland is basically asking David to try anything that will help solve his current dilemma aka death!

David, unrestrained by morality but very curious, wanted to see what would happen if the black goo was used on someone. He picked Holloway. Whether he was ordered to by Weyland or not is another factor I guess.
