ABOUT ALIEN FILM FRANCHISE ENCYCLOPEDIA
The definitive volume on the Alien film universe, covering the Xenobiology, terraforming, synthetics, humans, corporations, military, judiciary, culture, science, spacecraft, hardware, and weapons of Alien, Aliens, Alien3, Alien: Resurrection, Prometheus, and Alien: Covenant from an in-world perspective.
The definitive volume on the Xenobiology, terraforming, synthetics, humans, corporations, military, judiciary, culture, science, spacecraft, hardware and weapons of Alien, Aliens, Alien3, Alien: Resurrection, Prometheus, and Alien: Covenant. Structured in 3 traditional encyclopedic volumes – Non-Human, Human, Action in Nature – illustrated throughout with concept art, photography and illustrations, with a historical timeline and alphabetical index. From the Alien to Zeta 2 Reticuli, from the birth of Peter Weyland in 1990 to the USM Auriga's Earthfall in 2381, this is the comprehensive and authoritative official tome on the Alien films.
It's listed on Amazon too

Sounds like something presumably being written out-of-universe? Will keep an eye on this.
I'll throw in a pre-order, try to catch it at the best price in case the price drops between now and release. If it ends up not looking great, I'll just cancel at some point.
EDIT: Author Joe Fordham has a special effects background and a history with Cinefex. Very neat.
It says "in universe" in the description too
Or rather, "in world" but I think they mean "in universe" lol

Could this be an expansion upon, or based upon the lore the RPG uses? Here's hoping!

I'm looking forward to seeing more of this. I really dig the in-universe style that WYR went for and I'm curious to see if this'll also take Titan's own contributions into account.
Oh wow - this is brilliant, this news has definitely made my day. Cheers, guys.
Alien: Receives a new encyclopedia, at least three full-fledged books for this year, a TV series and a movie, a comic book series from Marvel.

I feel the same lol
The movie, sounds like I might be into it, so I'm curious to see the synopsis before I lose interest. This encyclopedia has potential too maybe...
Gimme dat last prequel.
Rise of Skywalker had lots of gaps that needed to be filled by reading their Star Wars encyclopedia.
Can't help but wonder if they'll throw some prequel-resolving answers into this before moving the franchise onto other things...
(Probably not though. I'll be surprised if David is ever mentioned in any medium again.)
I'm thrilled with this news! I love all the in universe books about lore and stuff like that. WY report was nice, David's drawings are great and the RPG books are the Holy Grail of lore IMO. Please I hope Gaska is involved in this! And I hope the book is extra thick!
Very happy with this too.
Although curious considering there's a significant possibility that both the new tv series and film could be ignoring current established lore.

x2! With the excellent job the RPG has done in establishing a cohesive Alien universe from a lore standpoint, and things like Fireteam Elite and upcoming Titan books using that lore and only helping to make everything feel more tied-in and expansive, I really hope that this likewise uses and expands on that same lore.
And yeah, if it does (and does a really good job of it) it's only going to make me
even more annoyed if the upcoming show just ignores and contradicts it completely.
It's the way of the world.

Prometheus and
Alien: Covenant are explicitly mentioned in the description here, though with this being written from an in-universe POV, I'd imagine the 'author' of the in-universe text wouldn't be privy to knowledge of David creating the Alien, and thus the book likely won't take a firm stance on that, or on David's post-
Covenant whereabouts, etc.

I;m betting it's movies-only again, like WYR.
WYR was a bit of a disappointment but I understand why they did it the way they did. It's a surface-level coffee table book, it's not a deep-cut franchise love letter like the RPG.

The WYR had references to some EU. Not much, but a little. The timeline has isolation on it, for example...

True, but if they really wanted to take the opportunity, they could.
The writer could describe how & where David's defunct body was found and report what was in his memory banks.
Quick, cheap, & dirty way to wrap up the prequels before moving on.

I am looking forward to this! I have bene enjoying the novels and comics recently but I keep looking for more inverse ''non-fiction'', and there really isn't much of it, which is a shame! I did manage to get a copy of 'The Colonial Marines Technical Manual' which I remember from when I was younger and it holds up. We need more books like these to really add to the diversity of ALIEN related literature.

As far as "in universe" pieces go, the
David's Drawings art book compiling David's pieces from his work in his ten years on the Engineers' world is excellent.
The Alien blueprints book is excellent too.

I'd totally be onboard. More content = better.
I don't think it's going to cover anything outside the 6 core alien films. The description very distinctly calls out Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, Alien Resurrection, Prometheus and Alien Covenant. No books, no comics, no games, no RPGs, no AVP. That's the impression the description gives me anyway:

I was being facetious :)
I'll be very surprised if it steps outside the solo series.
The AVP films are not touched upon at all. They are incongruent with the new prequel films and were not seriously considered part of the main canon, as far as the license holders (formerly Fox, now Disney) were concerned. Hope that puts it to bed.
I can confirm it will go outside the films, in various subtle ways, but this does not include the AVP films.
I'd expect no less. The occasional reference may creep through, but Fox considered all 3 licenses as separate (even if The Predator references AvP) from each other and Studios seems to be doing the same.

But the page for the product listing doesn't even have a date.
Yep, just got the same email myself. So much for the October 2022 in this thread title; this is starting to give shades of the endless delays of the 40th Anniversary art book.
Also just confirmed with someone working on it, it's indeed been delayed.
At this rate, given the extent of the delay, they might as well add a chapter on Romulus.

Maybe that is the exact reason and if so, justified and worth the extra wait. It would seem counter-productive to release a 'complete' encyclopedia of the Alien film series and have it be out of date within six months.

And the last word was it wasn't even going to be updated for the new movie.

That's the wackiest part.
Like, what exactly are the delays? We've got a fan-operated wiki that's existed for years that ostensibly serves the same function as this encyclopedia, and it's free and available online. Like, the book could copy-paste the wiki wholesale and call it a day, and it would get the job done.
If the new, repeatedly-delayed book doesn't even feature the new content from the new movie or TV show, why am I going to be interested? At best it feels like a cynical cash grab, as if we're going to get a "revised and expanded" edition in a couple years with all the new stuff so why bother buying the first one?
Quote from: SiL on Jan 28, 2024, 10:38:15 AMAnd the last word was it wasn't even going to be updated for the new movie.
