Out of curiosity, did you give Phalanx a go? I'd be curious about your thoughts on that one (on its worldbuilding, specifically). Of Titan's original stuff, it's the only one that really sits alongside the Alex White ones (and, hopefully soon, Cult) on my radar.

Nope, haven't read any of the "current" batch. Until recently I was too broke to afford novels (they're seriously overpriced here) and the ones that did get audiobooks seemed to have pretty dire narration so I just gave up. The thought only occurred to give them another try now that I can afford them, today.

Sevastopol

I really like White's style of writing. It's an easy read and yeah the characters are super interesting.

Retropocalypse

I feel present-tense writing definitely suits the franchise - and the horror genre in general. It adds extra levels of suspense.

Oh shit that's right, that's the other problem I had with it.

I quite liked the first-person writing style of 'Alien: Echo' too; it really put you in the shoes of Olivia Shipp, hearing her on-the-spot thoughts, deductions, assessments, uncertainties; it made her quite a relatable character. :-)

I really struggled with it to start with, but once I got into it, I stopped noticing it. You're completely right - it adds that level of unpredictability to it, and you don't know who is actually safe.

Plus, it feels like you're right there as things happen. It's actually more immersive than past tense, and gives a better sense of occasion. Poor Shy getting blasted in Into Charybdis actually feels tragic.

Hands down that book has the best villain in anything Alien related for me. Hated that bastard so much! Perfectly written.
