Yes, looks totally nuts. We need a good Arthurian movie after Ritchie's mess, heh.

Also, that's Fifield playing Arthur. ;D

Thought it was kinda ok and I don't blame Richie for what it was.
Imagine if he had more freedom and it was Rated-R.

Eh, turning King Arthur into medieval Snatch is a dicey proposition for me.

And you'd want frigging Paddington to be R rated.

Doesn't have to be Snatch storywise, just similar characters, swearing, bloody violence and perhaps puns on the violence.

I don't get the Paddington connection?

You ask for everything to be R rated. So the joke is that you'd even want family films to be R rated.

I do? I didn't know. What else do you know about me that I don't know?
King Arthur involves knights and medieval stuff, so to me it makes sense that a King Arthur movie would Rated R.
Even the 2004 movie that was rated PG-13 had some sort of adult tone to it.

Besides, what kids these days are interested in a King Arthur movie? Would make more sense to cater to an adult audience, kinda like Game Of Thrones.

My wife is rather heavily into the King Arthur mythology and we've both been looking forward to this for sometime. Was hoping for a VOD release before Christmas but if postponing it means we can possibly see it in theatres, it's the right choice.

I read Roger Lancelyn Green's take (which in turn is based on Malory's, Le Morte d'Arthur) on this tale just the other day. Will need lots of fleshing out to make it into a feature length movie though.

I made it to the theater okay,  but the universe tried to stop me, too. Road work, bad traffic, and a nasty car accident that happened not far behind me on the highway. But I still got here with time to spare.

EDIT: and then the projector went out like 10-15 minutes from the end. They managed to get it back up and running pretty quickly, though.
Title: Re: The Green Knight
Post by: Nightmare Asylum on Jul 31, 2021, 12:59:42 AM
Stylish, hypnotic, and captivating; The Green Knight contorts its source material (of which I am only familiar with J.R.R. Tolkien's translation) into something new, playing almost like a series of episodic role-playing game encounters that build upon one another and weave into an adventurous tapestry of moral complexities that hit hard with the same core thematic intent of the original work.

I want to say more, but I'm still mulling the movie over. I absolutely loved this, and can see myself revisiting it quite often.
Title: Re: The Green Knight
Post by: KiramidHead on Jul 31, 2021, 01:02:29 AM
Yes, I did ultimately quite like this, it really captured the weirder qualities of some of the legends. And I like the expansion of the outward journey, the original poem just stops and goes "yeah a ton of shit happened, but let's skip ahead." I'm not completely sure about the ending, but I'll have to give it some more thought.
Title: Re: The Green Knight
Post by: Nightmare Asylum on Jul 31, 2021, 01:43:30 AM
As for the ending,
Spoiler
I read it in a positive light, in contrast to the "What If?" that Gawain saw before accepting his fate at the hands of the Green Knight and insinuating that an ending along the lines of the poem's happier one could very well follow from where we were left.

Title: Re: The Green Knight
Post by: KiramidHead on Jul 31, 2021, 02:00:41 AM
Yeah that's pretty much what I figured.

Spoiler
The "vision" was the Last Temptation of Sir Gawain. He learns his lesson and accepts his potential death, so he may very well survive like in the poem.

I am highly interested in this but judging from the reviews this seems to be some high art film I will probably don't "get". Is there actually any action at all in here?
I don't mind slow films but if there is not going to be a good build up and payoff I might end up disappointed.
So to those who have seen it, is there action?

I will watch it eventually. I kind of enjoyed "a ghost story" too but I don't get much out of those kind of films.
Strange situations and atmosphere are good, still hopeful about the film
Title: Re: The Green Knight
Post by: Nightmare Asylum on Aug 02, 2021, 12:02:26 PM
Each "strange situation," in this case, ultimately boils down to a relatively simple good choice/bad choice morality test that helps to show Gawain for who he is and who he strives to be to the audience, boiling down to his final and most significant test at the end of his quest. I don't think it should be so dense that it turns off a great many people, but then, what do I know?

What I do know is that I want to see this again, and can't wait to own a copy. Crossing my fingers that it is packed with extras, because this is a world that I want to spend a lot more time in.

I went to see this at the local Alamo Drafthouse, and there was an intro to the movie by Lowery. He talked about his influences, including The Dark Crystal, and mentioned that he and the crew watched Age of Resistance religiously during production.

Smart man, Age of Resistance is phenomenal. 8) Ralph Ineson and Alicia Vikander actually overlap between that and The Green Knight.

I know he also started conceptualizing the idea of doing a film about a knight on a quest (which eventually culminated in him adapting Sir Gawain and the Green Knight into this film) after finding his old childhood Willow action figures and setting them up in a sort of diorama in his yard. :D
