But they wrote Chet to be the Queen didn't they?  She'd start laying in the next day or so.

I'm not so sure it was that they wrote her to be a Queen, as they thought the Queen angle up as they went along. From what Crom said in our interview, Shalerno had just given the normal adult Aliens the eggbarfing ability in the first draft they received but the Brothers had it moved over to the PredAlien as perhaps it was just something the PredAliens were able to do...

They should never have come up with that for the Predalien, nevermind a warrior.  Didn't mind the idea that the Predalien being a queen but the eggbarfing is a terrible concept that renders the usual life-cycle more or less pointless.

Lost potential there, as if the predalien actually did morph gradually during the movie, then the constant battles between wolf and chet would start getting more dangerous and one sided, thus making wolf having to use less direct methods.

That is genuine horror, never liked the idea of regular Alien becoming a Queen without becoming a Praetorian first, abandoning all the host's influence and becoming "pure" it also ought to take years. Otherwise the Royal Egg, Royal Facehugger, Queen bloodline is pointless. Thankfully, Alien The RPG says just as much.
