Title: 2016 Alien Anthology card set
Post by: Machiko Naguchi on Mar 16, 2016, 03:31:34 AM
Has anybody heard about this? I accidentally discovered it today while looking for info on older card sets. Seems like it comes out soon.

Oh. My. God

I need this.
I'm huge Into mtg and collecting in general. I'm so stoked.

Wonder what signed tags will go for.
Wonder who signed stuff.
Custom art drawn directly on cards?

Ahhhhh

Edit:
After doing some sleuthing, it's due out at the end of the month. But there's almost no info about it. No hype. Nothing.

Looks like a box will run me about $130 CAD. Pretty steep.
I'm not sure what to think about this, something tells me it won't sell well.

I hadn't seen that at all! Nice find!

QuoteChronicling each of the four movies in cardboard form, 2016 Upper Deck Alien Anthology looks back at the storied franchise with a comprehensive release. Top options include sketch cards and actor autographs.

Focusing on artwork instead of movie images, classic scenes are depicted with a variety of original art across a 100-card base set. Foil base parallels combine with standard insert to average one per pack.

A list of signers is not yet available but a key component of the release will be Autographs for top names in the overall film series and some will be short-printed. Another premium option, one-of-one Sketch cards offer original interpretations for notable characters and moments in Alien history.

Adding a non-traditional wrinkle to the mix, replica Marine Dog Tags (1:20 packs) can also be found as well as a limited Dog Tag Autograph (1:4 cases - #/5) parallel that is signed by select actors.

More traditional inserts each fall at 1:7.5 packs and include Character Bios, Weyland Yutani Propaganda Posters and artwork from the Legendary Encounters deck-building game.

Building on the base and select inserts are one-of-one Press Plates.

Several card products have been released for the Alien movies over the years, with the first coming from Topps in 1979.

Check back as more 2016 Upper Deck Alien Anthology information is revealed.

I absolutely love that these will be original art! I'm a little disappointed about no Prometheus but I really can't wait for this. Going to have to ask my local about prices! I'll post this up on the front page later.

Yea, get this out there for sure. I'm surprised I've never heard of this yet. It's so cool.

I've always liked those hockey cards with pieces of Jersey or helmet on them. I finally have a chance at that with my favorite movie franchise.

I don't think these will have any piecework cards in them. I imagine those costumes are long gone now. Probably in the hands of various collectors.

Oh for sure. I meant more like the dogtags/autographs. Usually autographs are on those little white cloth pieces on thick cards. I've always had a fondness for those. Just feel like quality items.

Makes me wonder if the dogtags will be actual dogtags or just some imprinted thin layer of tin.

I couldn't imagine actual set pieces and costume parts from alien. I'd buy so many boxs. >.>

Yeah I was surprised when I found it because I had not heard a single thing about it and it supposedly comes out this month. It seems like you usually know about most things way ahead of time.

At first I was confused and thought they were describing the old Alien Legacy set or something; then there was excitement because yay new Alien cards; then there was the ugh more stuff I need to spend money on feeling lol.

There are costume cards for the two AvP movies in case you didn't already know. Yeah the movies aren't great but I guess they are technically in the universe.

Looking at the ratio for those chase cards, this is going to be a challenging one to complete.

That's the beauty of trading cards, rather than the trading card games. They're a static set.

Looks cool but this is where I draw the line.  Maybe if I was 10...

I mean if they released a coffee table book with this art in it, I'd probably be into that, but how do you explain to your wife a new trading card set.  Not that I have a wife, but... word to the wise, make sure to get all your toys before you get married...

Interesting, though admittedly, I haven't collected any sort of cards since I was 10. So I don't know if I'll bite on this release. I do love the art though. I wonder who the artist/s are for this line?

Different strokes for different folks. Personally I still enjoy collecting these kind of things.

More interestingly for me though - I wonder if this means we'll be seeing some new artists on the Legendary Encounters lines. I'd like to see more artists of this kind of calibre.

Like Hicks said I still enjoy collecting the card sets even though I am older. I think part of it is nostalgic from when I collected sports cards as a kid and also because they have cool art/styles from a franchise I love. Also like Hicks said it seems some things will be difficult to get since its not like the old sets with a base and some chase subsets. It is more like the Topps 75th Anniversary set that has parallels for everything including special autographs for each one that seem to be almost impossible to get. We will have to wait and see I guess.

Agreed, I would never mock anyone for their hobbies. It's not that I'm not interested in collecting the cards. I just haven't done so since I was younger. But the prospect of these sketches on the cards makes them enticing. I wouldn't know how or where to begin in terms of collecting them all.

Phoned around town. Looks like it's gonna cost $140+ for a box. That's more than $1 per card.

I'm not sure if I should just buy the base set online and hunt down the cool higher end cards.

book came out with full page art of the trading cards but there isn't so it's the only
way.

I do have a binder that all my trading card sit in but I'll definitely go take a look man thanks! If I ever one day buy full sets for other Alien related cards something custom would be awesome for them to sit in so they're separate from my other cards. I have been keeping my eyes on ebay for the 1979 Topps Alien cards.

Lol check out some of my pictures in the collectors thread. My wife and I got a two bedroom apartment so I could fit it all in there. She knew I was into it. It's simply a hobby. The trick is to find that future wife who will support your interests, even if she's not into them herself.

And as long as you don't spend every dime on the crap. That's grounds for waking up finding all of your stuff in the trash.

Get your bills paid, make sure enough food is in the fridge and put a few dollars into savings each pay day, be it $5 or $50.  Anything left over is yours to do what ever the Hell you want.  Anything.  Whether it be fill your life with trading cards, over priced ugly assed toys or anything else;  it becomes a justifiable reward when all that other RL shit is outta the way.

There's no arguments, then.  Especially if you make it clear to her that she's just as entitled as you are to spending the excess funds on whatever you like.   We work hard to keep our house afloat, it's only fair we get rewarded for our efforts.

I went to my local sports/non sports cards retailer yesterday and asked about these. He said they might get a box or two. He also claimed that they will more than likely not get a case due to that they don't want to sit on the unsold boxes. I told them that the boxes will have no problem selling, esp. since they are on ebay and such ;D

Haha loving the idea of those propaganda cards, although why are they done in such a 1930s style?

As a product designer, I can tell you that design can be cyclical.  Old ideas often resurface in the strangest of ways, and with new twists.  Most likely the designers of the posters are just referencing the classic posters of that era as a terrific propaganda tool.  They could also be doing that "in-universe", whereby the style of the 1930's could resurface in the 2100's (or whatever the era happens to be).  There really is no rhyme or reason for it.  Sometimes, individual designers or architects will come up with something clever, and the rest of the design community will follow along like sheep.  Take the ipod for example.  How many products have we seen which follow its overall contours since it came out?  Lots.  In the future, there may be this vibe of trying to convince people to do something heroic and monumental and move out to the stars.  What better way to convince people to do that then by referencing some of the most potent propaganda posters in history?

By the same token, the old-school look of the Nostromo gear could be intended to act as an "instrument of comfort" for space travellers.  The designers of the future may be living in a zeitgeist which harkens back to a by-gone era, and designing their products accordingly.  All products tend to be a reflection of their times, or an intentional counter-point of their times.  Consider the Mini brand of automobiles.  They deliver a styling which was at its zenith in the 1950's.  And yet, it is perfectly on point today, precisely because it counter-points what is happening in design.

Haha loving the idea of those propaganda cards, although why are they done in such a 1930s style?
I really like them too HuDa, but I think the 30's style is very reminiscent of the "used-future" look, not to mention similar posters were ubiquitous throughout Amanda's travels on Sevastapol.

It's more that we've never seen that style used in the series at all before now. Hence why it strikes me as an odd choice.

As PRJ said though, Isolation had some similar style posters throughout Sevastapol.

I completely understand. I took it so slow the first time because I wanted to fully immerse myself in the game. They really nailed everything in terms of keeping it in the ALIEN universe. And the posters and other propaganda felt right at home, despite the profoundly different style.

I plan on getting at least 1 box. But the lack of advertising baffles me. I bet 95% of the people that WOULD be interested in this dont know it exists. Which kinda sucks.

This thread alone should sell a few boxs so that's good.

If anyone ends up getting one before I do, would you mind uploading some pics? Or even do an unboxing?

Hopefully I'll have a box mid April.

Very nice collection. It's like an advanced version of mine. Same thing, me and my old lady's spare bedroom decked out with alien and pred figs. Except she's the predator nut. I'm the demo addict. Tough fighting over shelf space :P

My audio was crap so I wasent able to hear. But with your Palisades how are the collector numbers? Low? I always wondered how important that was to collectors.

Sick!

So it looks like they take a few artists and give them a a handful of blank cards, and they draw up the same drawing a bunch of times and number them.

So for example those 3 above there may be 10-20 of each of them?

That's how it seemed to work when I looked into the firefly ones. Unless these are 1:1. But that seems unlikely.

I think those are the sketch cards. According to the releases they're, "Another premium option, one-of-one Sketch cards offer original interpretations for notable characters and moments in Alien history."

Just checked out some of the stuff on ebay from this set. The regular set and basic inserts aren't too bad but anything else is nuts expensive. Things like dog tags, sketches and all the autographs are pretty high. Initial thoughts are that its a nightmare for somebody that tries to be a comprehensive collector. Not just because of price but also because there are so many 1 of 1 and autograph parallels and such.

Oh and I also just realized there is a silver foil parallel for the entire base set as well.

I had my concerns about that too - especially because of how few of the chase cards you seem to get in a box. You'll have to be buying entire boxes and cases to get all those chase cards.

Just checking out some of the eBay auctions. Holy Jesus Christ, how much are people daring to charge for shipping?! £30+ for a single card! Some people are just out to take the piss. Get real.

The actual card prices seem quite reasonable to me. £10-20 is what I'd expect.

Edit: never mind, I've got to the silly hundreds for some autographs. Le sigh.

My local also reckons it's not looking good for receiving them over here. What the f**k are Upper Deck playing at with this?

Yeah, I just checked out some of the prices for the autos. As a current (and big time former) sports trading card collector, I can say that I am not surprised. Still keeping my eyes out for the Dance/Dutton dual auto (nothing yet).

Remember: The quicker the boxes get broken open, the higher the price will be to get one (or two, or three, or four ;D )

Title: Re: 2016 Alien Anthology card set
Post by: Machiko Naguchi on Apr 10, 2016, 09:51:05 PM
Yeah there are some expensive prices definitely. I will just try to get the basics and then try to find some sketches and autographs every once in a while if the price is right. Even the artist autograph ones can be pricey for what they are. I appreciate the uniqueness of the 1 of 1 stuff but it makes it difficult to try to get any kind of completion.

Firstly, I'm not into trading cards, but to give you my 2 cents on this subject, I completely agree.  The sketches are very meh.  One could argue that they are after all just sketches, but consider a sketch by someone like Syd Mead.  Mindblowing.  The only way to describe what that would be.  What I'm saying is that a sketch doesn't have to be average or weak.  It can truly be inspired.  I haven't seen anything in the set that I would think would fall in that category.  They're ok.  No more.  What really is not cool is that nobody will ever have the complete set.  I feel bad for the hard-core collectors who are completists.  The circuits in their brains must be blowing as we speak..

And I believe that was exactly the point. It will drive business as collectors attempt to collect them all and since the cards are rather scarce, they will buy the best value available which is the full box, which should be around $100. Sell base sets and convert them into the next box.

Limited edition things are very sensitive.

Let me know if that Dance-Dutton dual autograph shows up! :D

I'm hoping I get some of those dual autographs. I don't think I'm going to get one complete base set out of this. 20 packs per box, 5 cards per pack.

So I pretty much regretted buying this as soon as I figured I wouldn't get the full set. I hoped I'd pull a decent chase card worth forking out the money for the box. As I expected, no full set. 75 out of 100 cards. 12 of the parallel foil cards which are just the same as the base cards with a foil W-Y symbol in the background. 2 Legendary Encounters art cards, 3 artist insights, 3 crew cards, Mark Rolston autograph and Bishop dogtag. Absolutely piss poor distribution. Really disappointed in Upper Deck in this set. Terrible ratio in the box (am I the only one who remembers when you got 2 base sets from a booster box?) and couldn't find them anywhere in England - had to order from the States. It's annoying because they're a f**king gorgeous set! It's going to cost a ridiculous amount to collect this one.

I'm sorry to hear this.
I wanted to wait and see what the distribution was per box. There's a chance you just got unlucky, but it's not worth the risk. Probably just gonna buy the base set+ the sub sets.

Considering boxes are going for 150$ on ebay (the only place I found them so far), I don't think it's worth it. I still want the Charles Dance / Charles Dutton dual autograph tho (still no luck on finding one) and will buy it when it comes up.

Sorry your box yielded not too much excitement, CHicks. I was awaiting to see your sketch card from the box... :(

Love trading cards to pieces but I really don't dig the art for this so it's gonna be a pass for sure. I'm more interested in getting my hands on the full set for Alien & Aliens. I have the full Alien 3 set but that's it so far for Alien related trading cards. They're not easy to find in Canada & our dollar is so piss poor at the moment, buying from the US is just not worth it in the end.

What you may have seen was a horror anthology card set from the late 80s.  They featured Aliens as well as many other films.  I had some when I was a kid, but they're all gone with the wind now.  They were actually pretty cool..

I just found the card set on line". It was called Fright Flicks.  It Alien, Aliens, and Predator in it I think.  Check out some cards at this link..

YES! Those were EXACTLY the cards I was thinking of! I knew I had seen Aliens cards exist somewhere haha So I'm not crazy after all. Well... I still may be crazy but at least I know the cards were real now :p There's a site for 80s cards that I've liked on Facebook which has ALL of those you mentioned but there's no full sets to buy from the site, only individual packs & they wanted $5 per pack for Alien & I just wasn't too keen on that. I'd rather find a full unopened box for better chances to complete or at least get a base set done. But thanks for finding the link!

No problem Xenozipper!  It would be neat to find out which cards specifically from that series were the actual Aliens and Predator cards.  The ones in the link were just a few, but I think there were at least 10 Aliens / Alien / Predator cards in there...

Yea that I would like to know too. Here's the site I was talking about but sadly there's no checklist on the page that I can see to know exactly what's in them. The Alien cards on the site are separate on their own under either Sci-Fi or Horror, can't remember which one they listed it under. They got tons of trading cards there though that's for sure!

Unrelated to Aliens but still on trading cards, I really really need to buy this set one of these days. I've been obsessed with getting my hands on them for a while now haha I loved them as a kid..

Those sets mentioned are the only ones that I know of as far as cards. I am in pretty good shape since I have complete master sets for all those past ones except for avpr which I am missing costumes and autographs. I also have official binders for the ones that have it and the ones that don't i got custom ones from ebay.

I also have the entire set of fright flicks cards and stickers if anyone wants to see what cards there are. I also have some other random comic, promotional and Topps 75th Anniversary cards.

So...funnily enough today I took the lady friend to a DC TV and movies themed convention so she could meet Jason Momoa to get him to sign some Stargate Atlantis stuff she's got. We were in the retailers area checking out some trading cards and they had the Alien Anthology base set for £20 so I picked it up. They said they had some of the chase stuff but didn't bring it with them but looks like they're regulars to conventions in the UK.

I was pretty happy to find a complete base set - still miffed at having brought that booster box but happy to have gotten the base set not long after being disappointed.

Seriously. Like I mentioned before, I told my hobby store to order a case (they sell online also, of course) and they would definitely sell! He said they got a few boxes in and immediately sold them... ::) We all need to contact Upper Deck and tell them this great release was piss poor advertised along with the fore mentioned awful distribution.

I recently purchased a preopened case of cards online in order to get what I wanted out of this set. As a result I have a lot of extra cards leftover and wanted to see if anyone on here would be interested for a nominal fee.

Here is what I have:

7 complete base sets
Approx. 70% parallel base set
2 legendary art subsets
2 WeYu poster sets
1 character bio set (plus multiple extras of several characters like Ripley and bishop)
Plenty of empty boxes and wrappers

Let me know if anybody is interested

The sheer amount of unique sketch cards make this seem a little daft. Do they usually have that many?

I bought a base set on ebay a few weeks ago for fun, was only 10$ shipping included. Didn't know there was all these subsets. Anyhow, these Glebe sketch cards are amazing but too expensive and rare for my butt. The 2nd card from the 2nd column is one of the best Alien drawings I've ever seen. How come these ones are not on the checklist?

Anyone have this set "Alien Legacy by Inkworks" from 1998. It's got some pretty cards in there.

Inkworks first Alien set. It should be easily available on evilBay if you're interested. The binder is harder to get hold of though.

Yeah it kinda stinks that they didn't make an official binder for the set. From what I have seen there are still a decent number of official binders made for other non-sport card sets that are coming out.

The link to that custom Alien Predator Universe binder is a guy that I worked with to get custom binders for all of my alien sets that didn't have an official one. I actually suggested that cover design to him.  ;)  I have already talked to him and he said he would be making one for alien anthology at some point.

Also, I have the entire master set for Alien Legacy along with the official binder that Hicks mentioned if anybody wants to know what it looks like or what insert cards it contains.

On auction...about £3 for the card itself but for some reason, people are charging like £10-15 for shipping on single cards this last year. f**king ridiculous. Cost me about £17 over all.

Okay I went through the cards and filled the requests in the order they were received. Here is what I came up with:

HuDaFuk: Base set, poster set, bio set

whiskeybrewer: Base set, legendary set, poster set

Hicks: legendary set, foil parallels (approx 70%)

The leftover cards are:
5x base sets
LA3 & LA9
WY2 & WY6
2x ripley, gediman, 2x bishop, perez, 2x hudson
plenty of empty boxes and wrappers

My cards have arrived, thanks very much Machiko!

Loving the artwork. Also really interesting how the cards follow the extended cuts of the films, especially when it comes to Alien 3. But does anyone else get the impression the blurbs on the back were written by someone who doesn't speak English as their first language? The prose is terrible!

Oh and I got a big lol at how the mangled Bishop on card 60 looks like Sylvester Stallone

Thanks and yes, I got a full base set out of the two boxes with a lot of duplicates.

A little info on the packs for anyone interested, the Dog Tag packs don't give you a full five cards, only two. You get the Dog Tag and one insert, I was trying to pick out which ones had Dog Tags and which didn't but Upper Deck did a great job at making them weigh the same and making them look like full 5 card packs. They are expensive boxes, I don't live in the U.S.A so shipping them and the import charges killed me but they are well worth it for the autographs and sketch cards.

Also, the Upper Deck online store no longer has them in stock so if you are eyeing them online at a decent price get them while you can.

Overall I love these cards, they are made for the Alien fan. Some of the cards have opinions on the back of them from the artists, which is always a fun read, if you have the cards you will know what I mean. Last thing is that these cards pay very close attention to detail, the base set and inserts both reference the special edition and theatrical version from all movies, so you will find both the dog and the ox cards from Alien 3 for example.

There is officially one box left at the other hobby shop... may have to bust that sometime soon.

^I have no idea what that means, but thank you I guess? :P

I knew you would like that card Hicks! I did some digging and found Charles Hall's deviantart page, along with a much better picture of the exact card I pulled:

(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fpre00.deviantart.net%2F711f%2Fth%2Fpre%2Ff%2F2016%2F100%2F3%2F0%2Falien_anthology_oil_sketch_card_5_by_charles_hall-d9yeazb.jpg&hash=0534a32f4f903b12a8bcb7dda8fee26e8f9f4022)

His other sketch cards were really good as well! It appears he did only 9 or 10, all of which were really sick. I will post a direct link below if y'all are interested to check em out. As far as the remainder of the box, I got a Ron Perlman dog tag, Frank Elgyn and Jonathan Gediman profiles, Legendary Encounters #3,6, and 9, WY propaganda posters #3 and 7. The base cards are cool too, the Alien3 cards are def becoming pc'ed (personal collection).
After seeing so many sub par and hate to say it, downright laughable sketch cards, I am so happy I pulled one of the extremely rare artists! The box was the last one in my "local" shop for a long time, very glad I decided to get it! Happy Alien Day!

Nice art on that Hicks sketch card. 8)   5 STARS!  * * * * *

I bought a complete base set when it came out. After realizing home many sub sets, chase cards I stopped. I recently bought a complete set of the dog tags at a local comic show. I wish Ripley would have been included. The vendor told me Sigourney wouldn't agree to it. Lambert was one of them so I was very happy bout that. ;D

I have been looking at the signature cards on ebay. Thinking this might be a good way to get authentic autographs.

I like card series you get art or pictures from the films..behind scenes...puzzles..info. I think the first ALIEN Series the back of the cards assemble to form a jigsaw puzzle.

You've got me thinking of putting the base cards of this set in sleeves and a binder. Another project!

Oh yeah, pics do not do justice on that card. I imagine I could get an easy $300+ for it if I wanted to sell it. His nicer Star Trek sketch cards are asking 200+, and he did well over 50 for those products. Rest assured it's not going anywhere.

I would suggest getting a binder and good sleeves (I'm sure there are some at your local card shops) or a card storage box.
While I'm here, I did a comparison while watching Aliens yesterday:

I was just looking at the card set of the "Space Marine Dog Tag" series.  8)

Brett,Lambert,Parker & Dallas are classified as Weyland-Yutani employees USCSS Nostromo.

Dillon is Fury 161, Gediman USN Auriga

Christie,Johner & Varies  Independent Betty

Dietrich,Hicks, & Drake are Colonial Marine USS Sulaco. Both Burke & Bishop are Weyland-Yutani USS Sulaco

Rebecca "Newt" Jorden is LV - 426 XS? I would have thought an abbreviation or initial for Colonists? Dependant? Civilian?  Anyone have an idea or know what XS stands for?

All of them have their blood types on the tag except Bishop. ;)

If it was one of the marines.  Might be a "rate" or job description "corpsman"? A colonist ???

XS in clothing is Extra Small.  :D  She is that compared to the Squad.

I sometimes get service numbers written in very old Blue Jacket Manuals. I'll have to look the next time I come across one and see if it matches the sequence/format on the dog tags. I thought the service number is your social security number? Prior to this?

I don't recall the year but I know our government changed the name of the "War Department" to the "Department of Defense". I sometimes get publications under the original title.

Well, I'm not disappointed in what I'm seeing on EBay. The prices are all outta whack, though, and I'm guessing anything with Bill Paxton's signature was bought and held onto after he passed. I'd be willing to pay $60-$70 for that, but not for Lance Henriksen, Mark Rolston, or Michael Biehn. Those are the only ones I'm after. The Weyland-Yutani business cards are pretty cool, but I'm limiting myself to characters/actors I like. Illustration, too.

Just sayin' what I'm finding. I'm open to tips and stuff like that on how to find these things. I want to start a small merch collection, and even though I don't have anything, it gives my mind something else to think about.

Here it is, the chestburster scene from Alien, by Charles Hall:

This painting is absolutely stunning in person, so realistic. I managed to talk the seller down to $500, which I thought was fair. The seller said he was glad to know it will be appreciated, or else he would not have sold it at all. His art can sell for so much because he is so talented. I plan to have it authenticated and encapsulated by PSA, along with the Hicks card I pulled from a box last year. He told me he made 10 scenes for the new Alien3 product, can't wait to see them and possibly buy one or two, price pending. Hope you enjoyed viewing the best available sketch card (which is the only one made btw), Happy Alien Day 2019!

Happy Alien Day 2020 everyone! To answer your question, I don't know either.

I wanted to get a box of 2018 Upper Deck ALIENS for today, but none ever came up until last week. While I am here, I'll let everyone know I contacted Upper Deck a few weeks ago to see when Alien3 will be released, they said there is no definite date, even for this year. It will be worth the wait tho :) I also almost purchased a Sigourney Weaver "Actor Reactor" autograph from the UD Aliens set, but backed away.
