Title: Aliens Expanded - A New Aliens Documentary Announced
Post by: Darkness on Apr 26, 2022, 08:03:14 PM

A brand new Aliens documentary has been announced! CreatorVC have unveiled AliensExpanded.com and announced that it will be producing a documentary all about James Cameron’s Aliens with insight into its cinematic legacy. There will be commentary from cast, crew, and fans alike, and will explore the mythology of the iconic movie.

The Aliens Expanded documentary will feature scene-by-scene analysis driven by memories and stories. It will explore the themes, plot, characters, atmosphere, special effects and what impact James Cameron’s Aliens had on the world.

Aliens Expanded - A New Aliens Documentary Announced

Prepare for dust off, folks. Exploring James Cameron's epic from teeth to tail, Aliens Expanded will open up this beloved film like never before. Aliens is arguably – Hell, let's just say it – the greatest sequel of all time; Aliens Expanded will be the ultimate celebration of exactly why.

It will go deep, right into the heart of the nest, to unearth the reason why we return to its embrace again and again. Every line on our lips. Every action beat a muscle memory. A genuine classic still as terrifying as the day we first joined the mission back to LV-426.

Much, much more than a making of. Way more ambitious than some video essay. Never before will such passion, wit, intellect, and pure worship be applied to a single film.

CreatorVC are an independent global team of people who create documentaries about films they love from the 80’s. The documentaries are inspired and shaped by a dedicated community of fans. They previously produced In Search of the Last Action Heroes – a comprehensive retrospective of the 80’s action film genre.

Their second documentary was In Search of Darkness – an exploration of 80’s horror movies. They followed that up with Part 2 and are currently producing a third documentary in the series.

If you go to the website, you can view a teaser for the Aliens documentary. There doesn’t appear to be a release date for it yet. I believe, as well that their previous documentaries were crowd-funded on Kickstarter or Indiegogo so Aliens Expanded may follow a similar path.

Interesting. It'll be hard to match/top what Charles de Lauzirika and J.W. Rinzler have already done, but if they're able to score some new interviews with the cast and crew and can get some informative new answers out of them, I'll be all over that for sure.

QuoteAliens Expanded will be the most passionate and detailed examination ever made of this much loved classic; an ultimate companion that will enhance your viewing experience with new insights and revelations.

But to achieve something truly special, we're going to need your help...

Our goal is to bring the entire Aliens fan community around this project, and then mine this collective hive mind for insights, questions, and unique viewpoints that will enhance our interviews with key cast and crew:

What do you wish you knew about Aliens, but have never heard about?

What incidental or not-so incidental plot point really interests you?

How could we think differently about classic elements?

That process starts here, with this initial fan consultation. Below, we've provided the first details about how we're thinking about making this documentary, including a synopsis, and we want your input.

With the announcement of the creative team behind Aliens Expanded, we now know that Ian Nathan will helming Aliens Expanded. Nathan is well regarded amongst the film journalist community as not only a former editor and executive editor of the Empire magazine, but also as the author of Alien Vault and Ridley Scott: A Retrospective, and the upcoming James Cameron: A Retrospective.

On the Aliens Expanded website is a synopsis of the intent behind the documentary, an example of how scenes from Aliens would be explored and an emphasize on how much the production team at CreatorVC wants to involve the fandom in shaping Aliens Expanded. You will also find a survey on the website that invites the fandom to share their thoughts on the intent of Aliens Expanded, and also to share their own experiences. Be sure to head on over and make your voice heard! You have all of July to get involved.

Honestly after listening to this here, sounds like it will be a bunch of unpleasant fanwank. "From the people who know the film best."

So I'll also be involved in Aliens: Expanded too. As will other notable outlets amongst the community. Robin and CreativeVC really want to push the fan involvement aspect - they want to know what fans want to see, and not just be another rehash. Honestly, after speaking to him and learning Ian was involved I was really excited.

I thought that might be the case yes, but I'm just really not interested in a roundtable of what amounts to people discussing how perfect it is and showing contempt for everything else in the franchise, and I see that a lot from the "Aliens fans" in particular rivaling Star Wars fandom for how awful and toxic they can be.

Some of the descriptors in the synopsis make me nervous to that end honestly, we'll see, but I can't help wishing it was a documentary on any of the other entries in the series.

Especially after Superior Firepower and J.W Rinzler's book, my question's just why, what more do we have to uncover here? That's why that Alien Isolation thing interests me most of the upcoming behind the scenes content.

Are you talking Facebook/Twitter/etc? It seems to me that here, on AvPGalaxy, so called "Aliens fans" are being pretty civil and adequate with their opinions. Also, from my POV it seems Alien 1979 fans tend to be much more dismissive of Aliens than vice versa

Absolutely not my experience honestly or that of; Clara, Valerie, Rei, Allison, or a number of others that I know.

I am mainly referring to Facebook/Twitter/YouTube/Other although Blu-ray.com takes the cake for the most dismissive manchildren I have ever come across.

And with all due respect as proven by Alien Vault J.W Rinzler was on another level in comparison to Ian Nathan.

As for what it's going to be ultimately we will only know when it's fully formed I suppose.

I'm curious what they'll come up with. What works about the movie is well documented, what's enduring is well documented, how it was made is well documented.

I find anything suspect that declares anything is the greatest anything of all time. If you want to say you're celebrating Aliens as *one* of the greatest sequels of all time, awesome. I'm right there with you. I find fan hyperbole and absolutes tiresome, though.

Also, what does microscopic focus actually mean in this context. Is this going to be an Aliens version of Room 237? A video version of Aliens Minute? I say this as someone who is working on an oral history of another IP so I'm all for the digging for more stories but like so many others have stated, what is left to genuinely discover on this movie in contrast to the Rinzler book, the de Lauzirika documentary, the commentary track, the Aliens Minute podcast,  and all the other bits and bobs inbetween? It does sound a little fanwanky but...I guess we'll see.

Hopefully it's an interesting approach, there's genuine new info to offer, and it's executed well.

I thought it was just one movie that's in 2 parts (on 2 blu-rays). Maybe you mean In Search Of Tomorrow as the third part?

Alien Vault was awesome.
Pretty sure he also directed one of the previous Alien documentaries that I remember being decent.

The crowd-funding campaign should be starting today. I don't think Ian's directed a previous documentary for Alien, but he was featured prominently in Search of Tomorrow (which I've got to say again, I really enjoyed).

I really wanna check out In Search of Tomorrow, but even the online streaming price is a bit steep for me right now.

If you were around in 2020 you will have likely been aware of In Search of Darkness, a crowd-funded documentary devoted to the science-fiction of the 1980s being produced by the team at CreatorVC. Now CreatorVC is back, along with Alien, Ridley Scott and James Cameron historian Ian Nathan, with a new documentary focused solely on Aliens!

Aliens Expanded is aiming to be more than just another behind-the-scenes look at Aliens, it’s a look into the impact it made on cinema, on culture and on the people like you and I that run and visits fan communities such as Alien vs. Predator Galaxy. It’s a look at what makes Aliens so enduring and so magnetic.

Written and Directed by Ian Nathan (Author, Alien Vault) and from the producers of In Search of Darkness I-III and In Search of Tomorrow, Aliens Expanded will be the ultimate companion to James Cameron's Aliens, enhancing your viewing experience with new insights and revelations.

Now in pre-production, our early outreach has already added several key interviewees, including Jenette Goldstein, Mark Rolston, and Carrie Henn, and we'll continue to add further top names from the cast and crew throughout the year.

Joining them will be a supporting cast of top critics, commentators, film historians, fellow filmmakers, scientists, comic-book writers and game designers, building up a detailed picture of the sheer impact this film has had on so many people.

But what will make this documentary truly unique, is that our analysis will be shaped, supported, and energized by the fan communities that Aliens has inspired. From the project’s inception, we have worked directly with many of these groups and influencers (some of whom you will see in the documentary itself) to develop a concept that Aliens superfans will cherish.

Together, we will dig deep into the theories and opinions and pure passion that have built up around this masterpiece. Will you join us? Crowdfunding ends Oct. 1st!

As with CreatorVC’s previous documentaries, Aliens Expanded is made for the fans and is supported by the fans and to that end the team behind the upcoming documentary has begun a crowdfunding campaign that will go from the 6th of September through to the 1st of October.

The basic pledge includes a digital copy of Aliens Expanded, as well as your name in the credit and a digital copy of the soundtrack. The next pledge includes the digital copies, as well as a physical Blu-ray, 2 posters, a sew-on patch, a commemorative booklet and a certificate. You can go one step further and the next pledge includes a t-shirt! All pledges include access to a year-long celebration of Aliens, 20 hours of backer-only events, Q&As with the cast of Aliens, vidcasts and regular backer updates.

New Documentary Aliens Expanded Starts Crowd-Funding Today!

You can also support Aliens Expanded at the Producer level, which includes all the previously mentioned rewards, in addition to Producer credits on the documentary.

Aliens Expanded is expected to begin filming later this year, with an estimated delivery date of October 2023 for the digital copy of the finished documentary and December 2023 for the physical Blu-rays. Well, what are you waiting for, marines?! Assholes and elbows! Head on over to the Alien Expanded website and get backing!

Make sure you stick with Alien vs. Predator Galaxy for the latest Alien and Predator news! You can follow us on FacebookTwitter, Instagram and YouTube to get the latest on your social media walls. You can also join in with fellow Alien and Predator fans on our forums!

I have went back and forth with this over the years but ultimately I swear by the theatrical cut.

I used to have difficulty putting why exactly into words but here it goes.

I just do not like as a woman, the way James Cameron writes women, in both Aliens and his Terminator films his respective protagonist's destiny's to become mothers at the end of the day. Failing and then succeeding at that apparent requirement, with a man Michael Biehn assisting and instructing, them to do that.

So the Special Edition only exacerbates my issues with the writing and presentation of that particular theme.
Title: Re: Aliens Expanded - A New Aliens Documentary Announced
Post by: Cosmic Incubation on Sep 09, 2022, 03:03:45 PM
I more often than not prefer the pacing of the original cut, but I do appreciate some of the added scenes and details. I like the derelict scene, the scene where Ripley finds out about what happened to her daughter, seeing Hadley's Hope before the disaster helps punctuate the tragedy, and the turret scene is pretty cool.

I also mostly agree with BlueMarsalis and others that the special edition really kind beats you over the head with the motherhood themes, which I think strips away some of Ripley's agency. Or at least pigeonholes her more, if that makes sense.

It's still there in the theatrical cut for sure, but it's not quite as obvious or present as the special edition.

Post by: SiL on Sep 09, 2022, 08:58:37 PM
I think the only thing from the DC that feels missing from the theatrical is the scene with the colonists. It helps smooth out the jump between "they're in danger!" to "hey uh yeah we lost contact", which is a bit sudden and convenient in the theatrical cut.

I love the cut from the Facehugger's fingers gripping to Ripley's fingers holding a drooping cigarette, I hate the Jordan family being the ones to find the derelict and one of them being the only survivor, just reminds me I am watching a fiction.

Yeah I always thought it felt too convenient and coincidental that it happens to be Newt's family that finds the derelict and gets facehugged first.

That and other various things previously mentioned's why "perfect sequel" just reads as flagellation to me because I do not think that it is, such hyperbole benefits nobody and worries me that's an indication this will not have much insight of note.

I don't need the T-shirt but I'll take the disc version for sure. Would have been cool if the Producer/executive would have got a kind of " this is my favourite scene" or a " this was the first time I watched Aliens" sound bite in the final version or something, but I think they are dreaming for 10 to 20  times the amount for one word before your name in the credits, righto boys  Don't think they really thought that one through.

I personally prefer the extended version as its just more of one of the best films ever made  8)

I can't take this project seriously. I just can't.

This type of stuff will do the opposite of what the documentary aims to for the reputation of the film.

Feel free to rephrase it however you wish, but something to the effect of "how much homework have you done on the other deep dives into this movie, given the inevitable comparisons that the superfans will make - aside from the focus on influence and inspiration over the practical - what are the new insights you'll be bringing?"

Probably because it's a fundraising campaign. I only have Facebook and that's just for keeping in touch with family. So I've not really run into a lot of Expanded advertising.

But since the fundraising is now over it will probably be comparatively quiet for the next year or more while they work on it.

He's definitely one hands on director in history.

I think the scope of the hype on this thing is going to lead to dissappointment. I kept seeing it pop up, too, and the only thing I can think is "Wow, they're selling this like it's the next Alien movie."

I can already see a lot of "S'alright." Reviews/reactions to it. No offense to anyone who has put in the hours of work on it... But it is still supposed to be a documentary. Gotta know your lane.

Have you watched any of there previous efforts like 'In Search of Darkness" or "In Search of Tomorrow"? Or listen to the AvP Galaxy Podcast?

It's more of a celebration of the film with fans and the cast/crew/guests. The purpose is not specifically to uncover or learn more about the making of, which has been pretty exhausted already.

Basically, if you love aliens this is something  to collectively  celebrate that love. If you're not interesting in gushing over Aliens then this is really not something you will be interested in.

Considering the quality and success of their previous efforts I'm sure this will be fun.

To me its pretty clear it will be a fan made service tribute video to aliens rather than a documentary with a degree of internal fan amazment of the movie/ backpadding eachother and fan wank talk of how amazing thd movie is and hail it as the best movie ever etc. Kinda obvious from all pr on youtube, see an add for it everywhere... I will skip it, if its not a documentary trying to find new materials and how they made the movie and interviews with actors etc but interviews with fans about their experiences... I watch the quadrilogy docu rather.

Okay, but i'm not the one using the word "documentary." They are. If it's a celebration and tribute to Aliens, fine, that's fair enough. But if it's supposed to be a documentary and instead its just an hour of people saying "OH MY GOD ITS AWESOME!!!!" That's... I don't know. It's just not fitting what they're selling.
Title: Re: Aliens Expanded - A New Aliens Documentary Announced

More like get new interviews with the cast and crew on how the film and its reception have effected their lives. Fans talking about why they love the film and how it's effected their lives. Talk about how it's impacted film and pop culture overall. Probably lots of other fun stuff.  Documentary doesn't mean it has to be an indepth "making of", it's a pretty broad term. Besides we already got that with the Quadrilogy, there isn't anything left in that arena.

Just because it's a celebration of the film doesn't mean it should be characterized as fan wanking back padding which just feels cynical for the sake of it. Shouldn't be anything wrong with fans exclaiming "OH MY GOD ITS AWESOME!!!"" about a film they like. Although it rubs a lot of people the wrong way I guess I don't really see the issue.

Anyway that's all I got, I didn't put my money in on this one so it's not likely I'll see it anyway.
Title: Re: Aliens Expanded - A New Aliens Documentary Announced
Post by: SiL on Oct 06, 2022, 12:46:29 AM
I think it looks like fan-wanking back patting because that's how they've marketed it, not because there's anything wrong with celebrating a movie.

The amount of hyperbole, the sycophantic praise, and the strange touches of alienating members of the fandom with comments like "Aliens is undoubtedly the high watermark of the franchise" are just really unappealing.

I love documentaries that look at the cultural and industry impact of stories but when you're saying James Cameron is "the most hands on director in history", you're not setting yourself up as having a particularly good enough grasp of the subject matter to make an insightful point, y'know?

The feature-length Quadrilogy / Anthology documentaries were very thorough - and their Enhancement Pods added to the thoroughness.

The last ALIEN doc offered little that was new, if anything? I don't expect this new ALIENS doc to be any different.
Title: Re: Aliens Expanded - A New Aliens Documentary Announced
Post by: Corporal Hicks on Oct 07, 2022, 08:19:37 AM
We talked about the use of the word documentary in the podcast actually and how I felt it was to their detriment a little bit. It's not intended to be like Charles' documentaries (who is featured in this btw), or to be like a big behind-the-scenes look. They want it to be a companion piece. They'll be behind the scenes components, but it'll be doing things like exploring the themes present in a scene, how it ties into the wider lore, and cultural impact (in terms of fandom and cinema).

I guess kind of more like a visual-take on the Minute-by-Minute podcasts that we've seen for various movies. It's not going to be like their other features they've done.

I always ask that "what are you going to do new" question of things like this. It doesn't always have to be some new tidbit from behind-the-scenes, as I enjoy the new approaches to exploring the content. Memory wasn't some enlightening new experience, but it at least had this focused exploration going on, even if it was a bit reaching in some of the analytic aspects of it. I wasn't the biggest fan of it, but it was trying to do something new and was certainly worth my time.

Besides, Rinzler proved there's always something new about the films buried in terms of behind-the-scenes anyway (because yet again, we asked the same question of the announcement of those books), and I know there's still drafts and details locked away that we still don't have access to.

It's a shame their advertisement has put some of you off, but I'm really looking forward to seeing what they do do with the approach they're taking. I'm quite excited for it actually, otherwise I wouldn't have agreed to get involved.

I was wary to begin with, but being an Aliens fan I filled out their questionnaire, I think I am the only one here to have actually said so at the time. The sycophantic praise in the ads have outright made me loathe this thing before it exists, and remind me so much unpleasantly of a certain crop of this fandom that want everything to be Aliens, you would think @Perfect-Organism on acid was running their various social media accounts.

Next time someone speaks to them maybe tell them that exclusively marketing the film to people who have at least once thought of dropping to their knees and felating James Cameron - while certainly a market segment they want to capture - is maybe a bit more limited than they realise.

I really hope the movie turns out well but f**k me I could go for hours on their marketing.

Do you never wonder what Alien 3 would have been like if Cameron had written and directed it?  It could have been a three-peat of greatness.
Title: Re: Aliens Expanded - A New Aliens Documentary Announced
Post by: OpenMaw on Oct 07, 2022, 10:34:22 PM
If he had wanted to, he could have. He didn't want to. Much the same with Terminator 3. He made T2 3D instead.

Personally? I think it would have been great if Ridley and Cameron had done a collab for Alien 3. Jim writing, Ridley directing. I could see that turning out as a solid end to the trilogy, depending on what they did with it.

On the other hand there are a lot of things to like with the Alien 3 we got. Which is why I liken it to being in an abusive relationship. It's not all bad, but the bad hurts me.

The only bad parts I can see will be good this year, and then we will have the definitive version, both in terms of quality and editing structure.

I do wish we had got Ridley Scott's and James Cameron's Alien V they planned instead of AVP.
