Title: Mikey's Figure Photography
Post by: Mike’s Monsters on Jul 29, 2010, 04:47:14 AM
So, I have been wanting to get into the Photography business, and I really like taking pictures of figures. Most of what I have done is Aliens and Predators (because that is pretty much all I have!). I figured I would share a few shots I have right now, most of which I have posted in other parts of the forum, I thought I would put them in one location. I'd love to know what you guys think, and how I could make improvements. I'm trying to make these look less like figures as much as I can without TOO much post production in Photoshop.
There will be more coming over the next few days probably.

I'll start with some older shots of the NECA Warrior figure.

And some more recent shots.

NECA 18 inch Alien.

McFarlane Alien Queen.

McFarlane Dog Alien.

NECA Falconer Predator.

And not Alien or Predator...
Hot Toys Bank Robber Joker.

From one photographer to another, I've been meaning to ask what kind of camera do you use and how you get the lightning in your pictures so good to make the figures look like they're so professional?

I use a Canon Rebel XTi myself. All of the photos that have a perfect black background are shot in a photo-light box, which I use professional lights for the lighting. All of the others like the Falconer, Dog Alien, Queen, and 18 inch Alien is all natural lighting.
I'm not professional, but I intend to be one day.

I only have two cameras-- one is a Nikon 35mm 1979 model, uses color film and black and white. Really old. The other is a Canon PowerShot A75.

Can you offer me any tips to shoot how you did like with those figures but with those particular cameras?

Well, it really depends on the lighting and possibly the lens you use. I don't use film, I am all digital. This is my camera: body (http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://anthonysalerno.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/canon_xti-2.jpg&imgrefurl=http://anthonysalerno.wordpress.com/2008/05/01/&usg=__-b-61mr673s_hTHmnmsbPPUszFs=&h=525&w=604&sz=39&hl=en&start=0&tbnid=ZnAVQwBnjQj_XM:&tbnh=136&tbnw=160&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcanon%2Bxti%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1680%26bih%3D883%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=438&ei=YRRRTIfaNoz4sAOlr92RAQ&page=1&ndsp=45&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:0) and lens (http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.letsgodigital.org/images/artikelen/6/canon-18-200mm.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/19751/canon-18-200mm/&usg=__t9JP3YGAQCGsoiILA7kBxK8q0Pk=&h=364&w=530&sz=55&hl=en&start=2&tbnid=Gj6j6q6zmBuOfM:&tbnh=91&tbnw=132&prev=/images%3Fq%3D18-200mm%2Bcanon%2BIS%2Blens%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26biw%3D1680%26bih%3D883%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1), I am also playing with this lens (http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.borrowlenses.com/images/store/canon_50mm_1_8_large.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.borrowlenses.com/product/Canon_50mm_1.8&usg=__8fV1Tf8L8LxzWJ8nW0K7xE737nw=&h=450&w=450&sz=35&hl=en&start=1&tbnid=WLOBhdv8Ve9WJM:&tbnh=127&tbnw=127&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcanon%2B1.8%2B50mm%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1680%26bih%3D883%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1) lately, which I used on the Falconer, Queen, Dog, and 18 in Alien pictures. That last lens allows you to how larger depth of field and focus ranges in your photos, as well as shooting in very low light.

An example would be is that I shot the Queen, Dog, and 18 inch in my garage, but allowed the light to come in behind the figure, basically backlit. The Falconer, I shot in the shade for the portrait shot, and the landscape shot I stuck him in front of a window, with a very fast shutter speed, and hight F-Stop allowing me to see the detail in the figure and not get washed out with the light.

With your Canon camera, it's very basic, so it won't be easy to get a shot like these. It might be near impossible actually. Your Nikon I am not sure of, I would have to see the lens and body to know for sure.

Some new ones from tonight.

I really like how this first one came out.

NECA Unmasked Wolf.

Now, I'm not too sure if I even like this next one, I played with it for a bit... But still uncertain, it may be an AvPGalaxy exclusive, haha. Thoughts?

NECA Masked Wolf.

A few new shots.

McFarlane Warrior Alien.

McFarlane Masked Predator.

And then I started experimenting, I really don't know how I feel about it, let me know your guys thoughts on this please.

And with a bit more contrast.

And this is what the original looked like without any editing.

Those are all truly amazing but i do thin that the umm.... gel effect on the cloak shouldn't go in just one direction but actually be like an outline inside of itself. Either way those are great  ;D

Thanks for the feedback. I was looking back at it and I wasn't liking it myself either.
I went and revised my techniques and I think I came up with something better, what do you think? Oh, I took out the light from the laser, I might try to find a better effect to replace it. I didn't like that one either.

Great work!

Mikey your figure photography is amazing, you've actually inspired me in the past and I posted my results on DeviantArt, none of the images are as spectacular as yours but they're OK. I really like your first few Warrior photographs and the masked Wolf. Keep up the great work!

Thanks, I think I figured out why I don't like the shot... It looks too much like an action figure. On all these other shots I have tried to avoid the action figure look, and I feel like I achieved that. On this shot... It just feels too fake to me.

Haha love these especially Austin Powers, but a tip if you are doing a unmasked predator try and take focus off the face, I know that sounds stupid but you said you were trying to make them not look like figures and that is the biggest give away apart from that perfect.

Quote from: MrBrokenTusks. on Aug 05, 2010, 12:19:52 PM
Haha love these especially Austin Powers, but a tip if you are doing a unmasked predator try and take focus off the face, I know that sounds stupid but you said you were trying to make them not look like figures and that is the biggest give away apart from that perfect.

I actually find that the bodies look more fake then the faces do. I do work on the faces a bit, clean them up and stuff. I don't mind them looking like a figure to some extent. :)

If you started now, you could probably send a sample portfolio to one such company saying you're looking for work or something.

I'm trying to redesign my website to make it easier to look through, instead of my facebook fan page.
I haven't actually thought of sending a portfolio off to the companies before. I am actually thinking of messaging NECA's twitter account and seeing if they know if they are looking for photographers. Who knows? Maybe I can get the hook up on free toys or something. Haha. I'd work for that.

So, I haven't had time to do much figure photography... But I had an assignment in class come up that could use some figures. I had to have a hierarchy in a photo. So, someone who is of greater importance or power over at least 2 other people or objects. One of the shots could only be done with inanimate objects... And here is what we got.

Not Alien or Predator. But I still love it, even if they are really cheap figures.

The fog came from dry ice. I had two bowls of warm water off of each side of the frame. Then dropped a chunk of dry ice in each. So the fog came in on both sides of the frame.

If I get Burning G, I will. I actually don't like his tail though, it doesn't match his body, so I may not.

And thank you, I do fashion and model photography full time now. So that explains why I am rarely active anymore.

I've definitely upgraded since my old Rebel from 2010. I'm now using a Canon 5D Mark II, and a Sigma 35mm f/1.4 and a Canon 50mm f/1.8.

I'm pretty sure I bring this thread back from the dead at least once a year.

I'm not too active in the community these days due to my photography career taking up all of my time. But I still keep up with everything here, I just don't have time to be involved. Maybe the new Alien film will fix that. ;)

Anyways, I just purchased the new NECA Queen. And good lord she is beautiful. She's probably a new favorite of mine in my collection. I immediately took photos of her like I used to in the old days with my other figures. She's just too pretty not to take photos of. Here's what I did tonight:

I liked my light set up too much to not take more photos, so here's a few of my MonsterArts Godzilla 2014:

I hope you all enjoyed looking at these! :D

A few new images because I grabbed the NECA Elder Predator V2 and couldn't resist doing a little photo shoot.

I was going for moody and didn't have the patience to do a lot of crazy lighting because I had a long day at work, where I also take photos. So I just stuck with some candles and my iPhone flash light.

Now the NECA Dog Alien. I was trying to get a little bit of the mood like the movie's lighting, but I don't think I fully achieved that. I do like what I got though.

And just for fun, my NECA Godzilla 1984(5).

Enjoy!

I think the newest I have would be the Queen and Runner. I have a few Godzillas by them too, and the new Adam West Batman. I've got a few of the older Predators, I haven't been too fond of the new ones they are just hashing out. At the current apartment I have the Elder, Falconer, and 2 of the Wolfs from back in the day. I have way more in boxes in my parents garage. I wish I had the room for everything!

I hadn't picked up my camera in about a month due to some things going on in life, which I know a few of you know about who are friends with me on Facebook. I've been itching to take photos again, but unfortunately don't have access to models like I usually do (I'm a portrait and fashion photographer as my day job).

So tonight I decided to force myself to take some photos for fun, and I'm glad I did. I picked up the X-Plus 1989 Godzilla at the end of summer, and it is by far my favorite piece in my collection (and is my favorite Godzilla design!). Here's a few shots that I grabbed tonight.

Enjoy!

I'm going to try to keep it frequently updated with new photos every few days. It'll be a mix of all types of sci-fi themed creatures and creations. I hope you guys enjoy what you see!

Hi friends! It's been a while, but I've got some new photos of our dark lord and savior to share.

All of the lighting and effects were done in camera, with only post production being some minor color saturation tweaks. Basically, these photos aren't very edited and it looked like this when I snapped the photo. And actually, most of my photography you've seen here is like that, not much photoshop. <3

(Facebook friends and those who follow me on www.instagram.com/mikes.monsters (http://www.instagram.com/mikes.monsters) may have seen these already)

I finally picked up the camera to photograph some of my figures this week, mainly because we have had a few new sexy arrivals! I also decided to celebrate the ending of Dragon Ball Super with a few photos as well. Here's a small batch, and I have more coming soon! And also, the lighting and special effects are all in camera here! No photoshopping involved!  ;D

Funko POP Injured Dr. Ian Malcolm!

Some shots of my Dragon Ball figures.

SHMA GMK Godzilla.

And just for fun, my old Palisades Alien statue.

Gah. I uploaded low resolution and they look like crap. Not fixing them haha. Sorry y'all!

Damn, it's hard not getting emotional when going back to my first post in this thread. 10+ years ago I started toying (lol) around with the ideas that I now do today as my full-time job. Every step in my growth in photography is easily seen in this thread! I'm not crying, you're crying. :'( ;)

Here's a few new photos from over the last few weeks. All done with creative lighting and camera tricks. An example would be the Shin Godzilla photo using a projector to create the background image, with the figure silhouetted in the foreground. You can see more at www.instagram.com/mikes.monsters (http://www.instagram.com/mikes.monsters)!

Get ready for a photo dump!

Doing that thing where I resurrect a year long dead thread!

I just noticed recently that we have user galleries in our profiles! So I decided to dump a ton of my Alien and Predator toy photography from the last 15 or so years in one place. When I'd started photography many years ago, I posted it all here! Now, I work professionally taking photos and videos and it all comes back to right here! I think that's pretty awesome, and it's cool to see how I grew documented all on this site.

Take a look at my gallery! There's quite a few images I've not posted in here before like this of Hiya Toys Grid and Celtic. (https://www.avpgalaxy.net/gallery/users/mikey/)

Glad we have this feature on the site!!

Hey y'all! Bringing my thread back from the dead to share that I've launched a new website for my professional photography work. It covers a bit of everything I've ever done in my career, including some of my monster photography. You may find some stuff that's never been posted online if you look in the right portfolio sections.

I recently also had my car stolen on Christmas and insurance isn't covering a ton in the payout that I'll be using to buy a new car. I could use a little extra help and if you'd like to support I have launched a print shop with a few Alien and Predator toy photography pieces that you can display in your home.

Feel free to take a look if you're interested! Click "Shop" in the menu bar to get the the prints, and the monster stuff is towards the bottom. Thanks for checking it out if you do!
