Title: The AvPGalaxy Podcast - Thread 2.0
Post by: Corporal Hicks on Aug 15, 2013, 05:13:36 PM
(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/podcastj.png)

It's a feature we've been trying to get sorted for some time now and we've finally got somewhere with it. It's hosted by myself, Corporal Hicks and fellow staffer, Mikey. Due to a few technical and scheduling issues our first episode didn't turn out quite as intended but we got through it and it's ready for release. Hopefully we'll learn over time and appreciate all the feedback we can get. Anyway, without further ado:

* Episode #1 (21/02/11) (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/17332237/avpgalaxy/podcasts/avpg_pc_episode1.mp3) – discussions include the introduction of the podcast & Prometheus news.
* Episode #2 (10/04/11) (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/17332237/avpgalaxy/podcasts/avpg_pc_episode2.mp3) - discussions include action figures and an interview with NECA.
* Episode #3 (20/06/11) (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/17332237/avpgalaxy/podcasts/avpg_pc_episode3.mp3) – discussion includes fanfilms & an interview with Alien Epilogue's Darren Kemp.
* Episode #4 (19/07/11) (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/17332237/avpgalaxy/podcasts/avpg_pc_episode4.mp3) – discussion includes the upcoming Alien games (incl. Colonial Marines) and 25 Years of Aliens convention.
* Episode #5 (03/09/11) (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/17332237/avpgalaxy/podcasts/avpg_pc_episode5.mp3) – discussion includes the Alien Encounters: 25 Years of Aliens convention& an interview with Andrew David Clark, event organizer.
* Episode #6 (20/03/12) (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/17332237/avpgalaxy/podcasts/avpg_pc_episode6.mp3) – discussion includes the Alien Encounters: 25 Years of Aliens convention & an interview with Trevor Steedman, Aliens actor and Andrew David Clark, event organizer.
* Episode #7 (16/04/12) (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/17332237/avpgalaxy/podcasts/avpg_pc_episode7.mp3) – discussion includes the recent Prometheus and Aliens – Colonial Marine news
* Episode #8 (20/01/13) (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/17332237/avpgalaxy/podcasts/avpg_pc_episode8.mp3) – discussion includes Prometheus Blu-ray with special guest Charles de Lauzirika, DVD & Blu-ray producer.
* Episode #9 (20/02/2013) (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/17332237/avpgalaxy/podcasts/avpg_pc_episode9.mp3) -discussion includes memories surrounding the Alien/Predator franchise and includes the introduction of fellow staffer Xenomorphine (and he's got plenty of memories to share!)
* Episode #10 (21/06/2013) (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/17332237/avpgalaxy/podcasts/avpg_pc_episode10.mp3) -discussion includes the then recently released (was recorded in March 2013) Aliens: Colonial marines. AvPG staffers Corporal Hicks, RidgeTop and Dachande discuss the latest Aliens game the iOS and Android Aliens vs Predator game, Evolution.
* Episode #11 (25/07/2013) (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/17332237/avpgalaxy/podcasts/avpg_pc_episode11.mp3) -discussion includes the recent Aliens: Colonial Marines downloadable content. This episode is a little bit of an experiment as Corporal Hicks, RidgeTop and Dachande attempt to host a podcast whilst playing a game of Bughunt on A:CM. Expect incoherently strung together sentences, Dachande and Corporal Hicks abusing each other (although more Dachande) and a generally fun time for us.
* Episode #12 (15/08/2013) (https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/avpgalaxy/podcasts/avpg_pc_episode12.mp3) -discussion includes the various Alien/vs./Predator comics and novels. Join Corporal Hicks, RidgeTop and community guest star SiL as they discuss their favorite and least favorite releases.

If anyone has any ideas or comments they'd like to say on our episodes, please feel free to post them up. Hope you enjoy! :)

A new month is here and I've just uploaded the 12th and latest episode of the AvPGalaxy Podcast. Join AvPG Staffers RidgeTop and I and community member SiL as we discuss the various Aliens/vs./Predator comics and novels. We share our favorites and we talk about the ugly ones (expect a nice section on Deadliest of Species!).

Look out for episode #13 shortly, an interview with Tim Lebbon, the author of the new Aliens novel. As always, let us know what you think of the podcast and any suggestions you might have.

How do you mean?

Well, I for one actually enjoy the Expanded Universe material such as the novels and the comics. Some of things which you were talking about, I immediately recalled reading from the novels and comics which I have.

Little bit muffled, but not at all intrusive. You did good, dude.

Some notable exemptions, like 'Alien' and 'Sacrifice', but a nice nostalgic trip through comic land. :)

I like the idea of bringing in members for discussions.

The recent podcast was good. Took you guys a while to mention AVP Duel (one of favourites) and I'm surprised you've read though Dots. My grandparents gave me a copy for a christmas present and I've never read though it all or been motivated to read it ;D Maybe a later podcast could be about the games. How it fares as a FPS or RTS and so on. Just a thought :)

Have this on my iPod, so when I went out walking and listening to it, I spotted a 'No Exit' sign right as Hicks brought up the comic of the same name. At the exact moment.

I cannot sufficiently state how cool this story is.

Seriously though, good episode, guys. Even if, due to not being versed in it, 75% of the episode was EU gibberish to me. Similar thoughts on how I'd like to see the Prometheus stuff play out, though.

Nice chat fellas. Taking up Aaron's question, does anyone know the origin of the 'unravelling box-Alien'? I'm pretty sure I heard or read something about this years ago but can't recall the story.

The writer and/or artist were apparently asked about this, many years ago and they swore blind that it was in the cut which was screened to them. They have no idea what happened to it, but said it was definitely in there. The trouble with verifying it is that none of the production crew ever seems to get asked about it, which has made it a kind of anomaly. Giger's never mentioned it, but many of his designs were passed onto others to construct and they could always have made it out of left-overs from stuff made earlier. His new book might have something about it.

Wouldn't surprise me, because from what I can remember, there was meant to have been a lot of footage which had been removed for various reasons, well over the amount we've all seen. I've never even seen pictures of the famous translucent creature costume until very recently.

Wrrvrvrvrvrm (forget how you spell their name) might've been the one to have brought this to light, but I can't say for sure. Was on the News Group and I haven't been there in a very long time.

Either way, it should be kept in mind that Fox would have had to approve it before publishing.

There is an interview with Ridley Scott that mentions about the alien in 'box-like' shape but was never filmed.  He wanted to have the alien seen on monitors on the bridge in which the alien is in a strange shape.  I'm sure one member said the 'box' scene was 'blocked' or something.  This is going back a while.  But for the life in me I can't find the interview.  I'll have to go through all my material.  There's also a a scene in the Illustrated story that come to my attention such as the scene in which Dallas confronts Ash.

(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F3.bp.blogspot.com%2F-XzFyhsRGFcE%2FUaUhiBZoZgI%2FAAAAAAAAFVI%2FVobsGeWWByA%2Fs640%2FDalls%2B%26amp%3B%2BAsh.jpg&hash=ef36fab9db32be362b5bd285dd309aa5fed47bd5)

There's no mention of it anywhere and in the Terry Rawlings editing script he writes:

(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F4.bp.blogspot.com%2F-QgdzdNw3Qto%2FUaUivlgySsI%2FAAAAAAAAFVU%2F-dCzRkHdNMo%2Fs400%2FDeleted.jpg&hash=9b51cd91ef8dd41e804fe6757d3b03d87c12e8f0)

I've been trying to find out if this scene was filmed or not or just added because it was in the script.

Similar to Dallas switching of the Jockey transmission, or Parker being volunteered to go into the airducts after the Alien (by Dallas in the script or Lambert in the comic).

Okay, about the box Alien, see part 2 of this page. http://alienexplorations.blogspot.co.uk/2009/04/j-intermediary-stage.html (http://alienexplorations.blogspot.co.uk/2009/04/j-intermediary-stage.html)

I don't know how the thing would have related to what Ridley Scott said about his idea for an intermediate stage.

And I used to think that I had read something more about the box form of the alien but that might be a false memory unless I can eventually find something

Hey nice interview, I really enjoyed it.

Although I really liked the premise the more details that were revealed the more alarm bells started to ring:

Lots of aliens
Different types of aliens
Some characters are "red shirts"

Still seemed like a nice bloke, so fingers crossed it's good

Agree, I really like this idea. I think it will make or break this book depending on how well it is executed, so much they could do with that.

Not Ash and it works a little differently in mine, but it's frustrating when you're working on something and this happens. Understandable, but still - gah!

Great show guys!

Indeed, the lack of some good releases these last couple of years make me also feel a little abandoned by the franchise. It's a labor of love to keep up and keep engaged into staying up to date with everything going on. I think A.C.M. Showed us the ugly truth that the people that have to feed the fandom take a big shit on it. And that FOX is more interested in the money it brings than the quality of it. For me personally, NECA is making up for it big time. But that will last for so long I reckon. And Prometheus is a problem in itself. And Linderhoff or whats his name... is one of those writers that start out great and end very bad (Lost). The movie in my opinion is great. But the story construction is rather poor. I find this youtube vid very helpful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpEx7pdp2-Q#ws (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpEx7pdp2-Q#ws)  And both AVP's suck. They tried to conbine to much old with something not new but different (Piramides and Villages in present time) that it failed Big Time. And they had so much to work with... (Comics/Book) it might not be new or original but not something we have seen on the big screen.

But all in all, we need something new and refreshing. So that we again, as a community and as fan can get excited about.
But most of all the trust that the people feeding (FOX/Dark Horse) that, take us and the franchise more seriously and dont go for the quick buck.

Don't give up guys!! I won't!!

Enjoyed that boys, nicely done and I agree on almost all points However, I feel the runtime is woefully short for a show covering so many topics. I guess it all comes down to everyone's free time and availability but I think a show like this should really be between 90 mins to 2 hours in length. That way you can delve into much more detail with your discussions.

Also the audio is sketchy in places and kind of spoils it in places. If the audio gets that bad you should just re-record that particular bit when it clears up.

One quick point I'd like to make about AVP is that I too enjoyed the pyramid setting. But why present day Antarctica? John Davis and Paul Anderson wanted an AVP film set on Earth, yet having it 2000 feet below isolated Antarctica kind of negates that fact. Then Anderson says Antarctica was chosen because it was closest place on Earth to the surface of an alien planet. Again, why?

I wish the first AVP film had gone along the lines of AVP2010. Essentially the same plot but set in the future between Aliens and Alien 3. Hot, jungle planet perfect for the Preds, bring in Weyland-Yutani and the colonial marines yet keep the Aliens isolated to the pyramid and the darkness.

And should Anderson not be blamed in some respects for Requiem? After all it was his present day earth plot that led to a sequel being set in Colorado.

I thought this one was a bit long considering it was a 45 minute whinge.

Ah well, guys gotta vent I guess...

QuoteAlso the audio is sketchy in places and kind of spoils it in places. If the audio gets that bad you should just re-record that particular bit when it clears up.

That's what they usually do.  Sometimes some stuff isn't picked up on until I start editing, and only so much can be done with it.

QuoteOne quick point I'd like to make about AVP is that I too enjoyed the pyramid setting. Again, why?

Because it creates a timer.  If the Aliens get to the surface they'll spread as they're already on Earth.  If you do that on another planet, the jeopardy is reduced.

QuoteAnd should Anderson not be blamed in some respects for Requiem? After all it was his present day earth plot that led to a sequel being set in Colorado.

Davis wanted it on Earth, so Anderson gave him that.

But does it though? Realistically what are a pack of Aliens gonna do on the Antarctic surface? It's just a false sense of jeopardy, just like the entire present day Earth setting was as a whole, rendering it pointless. And BG-386 at least had a nearby colony so you could argue the threat would be greater there anyway.

Well they weren't in Antarctica really (despite what the film says), and there was a crewed ship nearby.  If the crew is all killed - someone's going to come looking for them and find a bunch of eggs.  Then there's a temple under the ground full of eggs.

Weyland wasn't the only one with a satellite.

A rant podcast? oh man, AVPG will love this  :P :-\

I never gave CM a chance either after seeing and hearing it was so frightfully bad... not worth it to me. And after i saw those galloping, FREAKING GALLOPING xenomorphs... i was like NO. Screw this.

I agree with Corporal on the 'please the fans' thing that companies are doing: "Oh look see its -insert iconic Alien film location here-! LIKE FROM THE MOVIE! You like that don't you???? please buy our game/thing/whatver?!?!"

I like DoomRulz's sound effects in the background there...

For 20 years they avoided doing precisely that and people complained.  Now they're tying stuff more to films and people still complain.

Can't please everyone I guess...

I'd disagree. Majority of the games were based on the movies and anything after that has had design elements that are very similar in design to the movies.

I'm glad everyone isn't completely ashamed by the whine-cast. I know SM didn't like it so was worried everyone wouldn't.
Title: Re: The AvPGalaxy Podcast - Thread 2.0

It would seem I'm overwhelmingly in the minority.  :)

None of the AvP games were tied to the movies, and after the first 3 comics series, they weren't tied to the films either.  I'm talking in terms of story and character, rather than design elements.  You can't really escape them.

I can kinda agree where SM is coming from. Fans as a whole can be this stupid, unpleasable mass that hates everything that comes out. It just a lot of the angry butthurt nerd that thinks its cool hate at something.

At the moment though i feel like i'm surviving off a lot of older alien and pred stuff while trying to drain nutrients out of whatever new things come out... which haven't been all the pleasing. The recent alien/predator/avp comics left something to be desired, Prometheus... was a thing... and CM was pretty much the world's biggest disappointment... am i forgetting anything?

I am looking forward to Isolation... yet my excitement is depleted and i'm more "well... i hope its good..." warry. if you get me.

On the bright side, at least i have some SAWEET action figures though!  ;D

I dunno if it's the 'cool to hate something' thing - more that a lot of fans don't know what they want (beyond 'make it cool like Alien or Aliens, but give us something new, I mean seriously how hard can it be?').  All they do know is they're not getting it.

This podcast was from the heart and not from a script,I really enjoyed listening to it  I was suprised to hear it , thought ah what the heck give it a listen
since not much else is going on, what really suprised me was a mention of my prometheus mod I built in idTech4 doom3 and my experimental Alien Trilogy D3 mod.
Thanks very much, truly a welcomed suprise and humble acknowledgement.  Thanks to everyone that took the time to check it out. The project I'm making now isn't so cinematic
like prometheus D3 was , I did get a bit carried away with cinematics because they were fun to build and create, too bad the gameplay suffered.
sorry for that. my new project however will be much more FUN! in every sense, so thanks everyone for your support and interest in my Doom 3 mod projects.
Happy Cheers! and best always! :)

Glad you liked the podcast. I really enjoyed your Event Horizon and Prometheus mods, excellent work on both of them. I probably got more satisfaction from your Prometheus mod than I did from the actual film; it was truly a joy to throw that basketball around, blasting the bodies of the crew to bits during the briefing scene. Also, the incorporation of Aliens and Predators was great. I hope to see you working with id Tech 5 one of these days.

Looking forward to the next podcast "vs" ?  ;)

I found the podcast really fascinating. I was reminded of other threads on the forum, the ones about Predator 2 -- there seems to be more haters than lovers of that one, but it does what the (true) fans purportedly want -- does something new with new characters in a new setting that has nothing to do with previous one. (well, aside from the Busey line, anyway).

But yes - the points about they (the creative teams writing this stuff) do seem to think the way to the fans hearts is by referencing / rehashing what's gone on before are completely valid. But then - I like that stuff. I think it was Ridgetop said that the great thing about A:CM was walking through the excellently realised Sullaco and so on - and he's right - I got a massive thrill out of that (but as I've said elsewhere, I'm not a big gamer, so I don't really get all the hate -- and I've not finished the game yet).

But it does seem that we do want Colonial Marines vs Aliens vs Predator(s) in a decently realised movie - or is that the wrong takeaway from the 'cast? Are we looking more towards new characters, new situations unrelated (as much as possible) from the marines and xenos. Like the first AvP comic? I've read many places "Why they hell didn't they just make that!"

If only the Sulaco and colony were excellently realised.  Bit the anal continuity nitpicker that I am, I found them pissweak.

Episode 18 is now online. Apologies it look so long to get uploaded - it was recorded back in June and deals with Predators and ideas for the franchise moving forward.

Hope you all enjoy.

So for our next episode we were thinking of doing something related to anything Alien/v/Predator/Prometheus that we did for Halloween. Did anyone here do anything they'd like to do a recording of to share on the episode?

I was listening to the first cut over episode 21 on the way to work. Doesn't sound like it'll need any more editing so should have the episode up tonight or tomorrow.  :)

We'll be recording our last episode of the year on Saturday.

1. What's your take on how the Space Jockeys were portrayed in the Earth War trilogy?

2. What is your take on an alien infestation on Earth in the movie universe? (Not AVPR but global) Is it something that should be definitively avoided or a way to jump-start the franchise into a totally different direction? For example, rather than having a movie set during the battle for Earth, just have it in the background as a plot device, that our home planet is now overrun with the alien.
