So the Predator EU is giving some signs of life. Took them long enough.  :P

The guy that wrote Sea of Sorrows and The Predator prequel? Okay. I can dig that. SOS was my favorite from that trilogy and I quite liked the portrayal of the creature in his Predator novel, that would have been a better movie than The Predator. This got my blessing.

Hope they'll be a Mass Paperback version though.

Fantastic news! I loved Hunters and Hunted, it was far better than the movie IMHO. Very happy to see we're still getting more. Gives me hopes that the next anthology is going to happen.

That said, am not being taken to a product page via the link.

For a minute I got confused and though this was the guy who wrote the lacklustre The Predator novelisation, then I remembered he did the prequel, which I really enjoyed. Will keep an eye on this! Glad the novels are still ticking over.

I'd be wary about this one. Sadly James Moore appears to be quite ill at the moment. From his fundraising page im not sure he is even writing at the moment.

That's too bad  :( Aside from the novel, I do hope he recovers. The fundraiser description sounds optimistic.

First and foremost I wish James a speedy recovery. But here's to hoping he writes another solid Predator novel as well.

I believe Jim is still trying to work despite his fight:

QuoteHe has a lot of books of his own left to write (including some for which he's currently on deadline), but at the moment, cancer's getting in the way, and he needs our help.

https://www.gofundme.com/f/please-help-author-james-a-moore?

Here's the fundraising if anyone else wants to contribute. Every little helps, even if it's just the cost of a book.

Synopsis from Amazon.

"An action-packed prequel to the new Illfonic video game PREDATOR: HUNTING GROUNDS - revealing deeply buried secrets in the battle between the ultimate hunters and their human prey.

This official prequel novel leads into the new Playstation 4 video game from IllFonic. PREDATOR: STALKING SHADOWS is the bridge between Predator 2 and the current day continuity. U.S. Marine Scott Devlin takes on a new assignment that begins with the clean-up of a Los Angeles combat scene revealing what appears to be alien weapons and tech. His next mission, to an equatorial jungle, seems like an assault on a drug cartel until his team finds human bodies, skinned and suspended from the trees. Justifiably freaked out, Devlin digs deeper and discovers hidden truths, clandestine agencies, savage opponents... and an unexpected ally."

I'm excited to know there's a new Predator book coming but seiously : does everything nowadays need a prequel novel ?

I quite the sounds of this! I like it tying into Predator 2 like that. Especially after how much I loved Hunters and Hunted, I'm really excited for this one!

Man... sooo seconded, Hicks!  I'm very excited about this, as well as with the notion that we might get a true follow-up to Predator 2 that many have been so desperately craving. Sorry If It Bleeds - Drug War, but you just don't measure up in my book.

I'm not complaining - it just seems to me they do prequel novels for the sake of it, not 'cause game really needs prequel story . But again I'm excited there any new Predator book coming out. They don't do that frequently these days, huh ?

Well when it's EU, isn't it all technically prequels or sequels?  ;)

But yeah, the IP Holders do love those tie-ins because the fans just eat them up. Not only will we buy the Predator Hunting Grounds game, but we'll buy the prequel novel, new associated pop figures, sugar cereal, and even buy and wear the Hunting Grounds socks too!  ;D

Now if Titan will give us two more omnibus with the DH press Predator novels (that I've never read) I'll truly be a happy camper.

Well Predator can go anywhere and given the last film takes place in 2018, even if it wasn't meant to be a tie-in to the game it's still a prequel because it takes place before the last film in the timeline. As well as since the Predators had been arriving for centuries if not more, a lot of stories would fall into the prequel camp inherently.

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with Stargazer. It was just another iteration of OWLF. Like most of the aspects of The Predator, it was just in how they handled it. Given Jim also wrote the only real backstory and competent Stargazer we've seen in Hunters and Hunted, I expect we'll see more of them in this too. And I'm fine with that.

I'm glad there's a new novel coming, I have no problems if Stargazer is incorporated into the story, "Hunters and Hunted" and "Hunters II" proved that you can make a great Predator story using elements of The Predator. But please, none of that "Predators want our DNA and they want to move to Earth" stuff, I just want our regular Predators that comes to hunt and collect trophies, but since it's the same author of Hunters and Hunted, I think we're good.

I would have been quite fine if hybridization was limited to a few outcast Predators explaining Super Predator mutations, sports hunters looking for an edge. To me, that idea has merit. But a 11 foot CG Predator chasing autism unfortunately went just too far.

My initial reaction was perhaps Mark was just doing the reading / audio recording, which he seemingly has done before, but yeah, that's usually for his own books. Most likely this is just wishful thinking by me. Hopefully he's okay.

Maybe, hopefully, it's not over health? Christopher Golden was joined by Mark too and Golden's health has been fine as far as I can tell.

Mark was brought on to deal with rewrites to that following all the reshoots because of Golden's availability. The concerns for this being about Jim's health is he was diagnosed with cancer recently, and perhaps Mark being brought on because of any issues meaning Jim isn't able to write atm.

Ah, damn. The reshoots. Well I got nothing then.

Yeah, I know about Moore's diagnosis and wish him the best. This is more me playing mental gymnastics trying to work-in a possibility that this was always the plan versus an artistic vision possibly being compromised.

Nice find felix! Where did you locate that brother? Amazon US is still showing the temporary cover.

On the cover itself. It's okay, I guess? The soldier isn't in a very dynamic position. His gun is pointed too much to the right. And are those supposed to be bullets the soldier fired? Because artistically, it looks more like those bullets are coming towards the soldier, versus away.

It's a snipped version of the new wallpaper from Illfonic.

And the cover can be found here: https://bnccatalist.ca/viewtitle.aspx?ean=9781789094411

It's as good a screenshot as any to use, just a shame about the odd bullet placement given the cropping.

It's a movie. The dude looks alive to me until he gets blasted. He didn't bleed out in the split second between him getting hit with the net and his pals hosing him down.

My advice would be to be patient and keep hunting.

I snagged a copy a few weeks back for a fairly reasonable price. It was still kinda expensive for a paperback, but we're talking about three times what a new one would normally go for rather than the extortionate prices it usually seems to fetch.

I have wondered why they never did that with the Predator DH Press books. Seems weird that they'd do collections for the Aliens ones but stop after the Bantam books for Predator, especially as the DH Press Predator books are so much better than the Bantam ones (Forever Midnight notwithstanding).

Spoiler

Started reading late yesterday, so just managed to finish the prologue and chapter 1. So far it ties really well with Predator 2, dealing with the aftermath of City Hunter's and Harrigan's confrontation, with the OWLF in LA trying to salvage something out of the mess that the operation was. Was not expecting Dutch to be in this, really nice to finally see him again and find out what happened to him after Predator.
So far so good!

Perhaps they've just upgraded it?

Come to think of it, are there any future-set stories where it's stated as being affected by water? I don't recall it ever being addressed in Forever Midnight, Flesh and Blood or the Rage War novels, but I could be wrong.

To be fair, it doesn't seem to short it out as badly as in Predator, but it is certainly not working flawlessly. It was a problem I had with Hunters and Hunted and Jim said he liked to envision they'd upgraded the cloak so water wouldn't affect it as much.

I'm about 140 pages into it. I'm enjoyed it but

Perhaps, that's one way to explain it.
But the chapter in question takes place in 2000. It's not that far from Predator 2. Wolf's cloaking device was affected by water in AvP-R, that takes place in 2004. And probably other tales around that time had the Predator's cloaking device being affected by water, I honestly can't remember right now, I would have to check. Anyway, like I said, it's no big deal, just a minor issue.

Title: Re: Predator - Stalking Shadows by James A Moore
Post by: HuDaFuK on May 21, 2020, 04:02:38 AM
Admittedly I'm only one (fairly long) chapter in so far but to be brutally honest I'm really not enjoying this.

Far too much dumb shit has annoyed me already. For instance:
Spoiler
  • If you're going to recreate scenes from one of the movies, for f*ck's sake make them match the movie. The opening sequence set during and immediately after the ending of Predator 2 is littered with inconsistencies. Most glaringly, instead of emerging from a tunnel in an apparently deserted area of town, we've got the Predators' ship exploding out of the ground in the middle of a neighbourhood, leaving a massive crater, demolishing buildings and killing scores of innocent bystanders. (Aside from not matching the film, this doesn't gel with the Predators' established M.O. of only killing worthy adversaries and staying hidden as much as possible either.) There are also said to be dozens more bodies down in the crater, implied to be mutilated Predator victims, yet we never see any evidence of these in the movie. And Garber watches Harrigan rise from the ashes on the surface outside when this happens deep underground long before Garber arrives on the scene in the film. Incorporating movie scenes and getting them wrong like this has been a pet peeve of mine since River of Pain, and this book's all over it. All you'd need to do is watch the scene in question, even once, and you'd catch most of these.
  • The inclusion of Sean Keyes and Dutch has thus far felt entirely tenuous. Keyes, Jr. in particular makes no sense being around at the end of P2. He's said to be the Regional Director of OWLF, yet if the actor's age is even remotely accurate to his character he'd be in his mid-20s at the time. Regional Director at that age? Moreover, the film gives the distinct impression OWLF is a small, clandestine unit operating off the books, so it seems highly improbable it would even have Regional Directors. Is that not a bit... official?
  • Similarly, Dutch's appearance at the scene doesn't make a whole bunch of sense, at least not the way it's portrayed in the book. He basically steals an OWLF chopper from a government building to get there instead of just, you know, driving. Garber even flies it for him. And no one cares.
  • Considering an entire OWLF team just got massacred by one of the creatures, it doesn't make a lick of sense that Keyes recruits just one soldier for protection when he goes to investigate a potential Predator encounter elsewhere in the city. If OWLF can boss the military around like that, why not take the entire unit?
  • And if OWLF can boss the military around like that, why do Garber and the other surviving agents run off at the end of Predator 2 as soon as the cops show up?
[close]

I really hope this picks up once it moves on to more original material because I quite like the concept of following one soldier over several years as he goes through assignments around the world and climbs the ranks, uncovering more about the Predators as he goes. But so far this novel has read like bad fanfic.

Haven't got my copy yet but it could be explained by different models of the device being affected in different capacity. So different Predators will have slightly different responses to the elements considering the tech. In AVP the Predator's cloaks work fine in the snow and so we could assume the tech has gotten better and just that not all Predators have the modern tech. I believe Fugitive was also being coated in blood and it didn't affect his cloak aside from his eyes being visible so if his cloak was affected it's just not in such extreme cases as Jungle Hunter short-circuiting.

Yo guys, can someone tell me if the book fixes the stuff that The Predator did? undo the autism retcons and stuff

While I don't have my copy yet its worth mentioning that seemingly the only carryover is Stargazer as an antagonistic force but otherwise the hybridization is a trait only left to the Assassin and the Fugitive Predators.

Oh boy. I'm about to place an order for this and suddenly see it's co-authored by Mark Morris...who co-wrote The Predator novelization. I will temper my expectations and hopefully I'll come out on top this time.

I believe Mark Morris only came in and pinched hit in the finale innings for James Moore, as Moore struggled with health issues. So I'd assume the book is more Moore than Morris.

Finished this today. Hicks' review is pretty much spot-on in terms of reflecting my own thoughts. The core concept could've been interesting but it took way too long (more than half the novel) to get going and overall it felt terribly uninspired and by-the-numbers. There are worse Predator books, but I can't think of any as bland as this.

Other than the Isolation adaptation I'd rate this as comfortably the weakest Titan novel.

I enjoyed the majority of it. The way the different chapters start in different years made me think that it could work well as a miniseries.
I thought the ending was a bit abrupt, though. Wasn't enough build up, and it was over a bit too quickly for it to be satisfying. I even had to reread a bit to make sure I hasn't missed anything. I hadn't, it just ended.

I'd give it a 7, I think. The expanded lore and the character perspective was good, as was the continued story of Dutch, but there was teased  information implying a story which might have been better than the one told.

Finally finished this!

Spoiler
The novel felt more akin to a diary than a traditional narrative as we skipped through Devlin's military career. So in that way it kinda reminded me of "Bloody Sands of Time". I really enjoyed every Predator encounter but I will gripe that all of the Preds were too brazen, attacking an entire squad of soldiers, as opposed to stalking their prey and picking them off one by one. I enjoyed the inclusion of Dutch and was able to "hear" his voice when I read his dialogue and I liked how Devlin's team and Dutch's path would cross due to military assignments.

All in all, the book wasn't what I expected but I still had a good time reading it.

Just finished this one last night.  I enjoyed it very much.  As a timeline junkie I enjoyed how this flowed with Predator, Predator 2, The Predator and Hunting Grounds Dutch recordings.  Kinda cool seeing a location from a Dark Horse comic revisited even if that encounter isn't actually mentioned and it was most likely coincidental.

I caught that too! The Zuni-Bandera lava fields are in the same national park as the Malpaise from "Big Game". As for timeline "Big Game" takes place in 1990 so way before Devlin's time. But it's cool to see that there's specific hunting grounds that the predators like to frequent.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's a waste BUT it certainly wasn't what I expected. The book is more like a diary than a normal narrative so expect a lot of time jumps. In some ways it felt like an anthology with all these snippets of different encounters. Having read "Forever Midnight" for the first time right after reading this, I can confidently say that this is nowhere near the worst Predator novel though.

Both AvP movies supposedly take place around Oct 2004, and the book kinda hops over that between chapter 6 and 7, Scotland in Sept 2004 and Mexico in Sept 2005 respectively. All of the events of Bouvetøya were really isolated but we know some of the recovered artifacts ended up with Project Stargazer. Gunnison Colorado of course was nuked by a branch of the OWLF and we know the artifacts recovered from that ended up in the private sector with Yutani Industries. The perspective of the book is entirely from one character who is an outsider to all of these organizations, so no direct references are made and the main character doesn't even have a solid foundation of awareness of extraterrestrials until later.

It can be assumed that events surrounding the destruction of Gunnison were covered up and played off as a natural disaster, like a meteor strike or atmospheric comet explosion like the Tunguska Fireball or something. So the book doesn't go out of its way to ignore these events, the main character Devlin just doesn't have any reason to refer to them since he isn't in the know. The whole book plays much more like an X-Files type mystery stretched across the span of a number of years as Devlin lives his life and slowly gathers pieces of the much larger picture whenever he crosses paths with Dutch.

Yes but the book is meant to bridge all movies to the game, the fact it straight up ignores the AvP movies is a good sign honestly

I guess. If one is a detractor of the AvP franchise, then yes, the ambiguity will comfort any sensitivities. Though a distinction should be made between simply not referring to events and blatantly contradicting events. This book does the former, not the latter, so all fandom teams are respected.

According to whom? I've never heard that to be the case, and the blurb doesn't say that.
Also, I might be wrong but I don't recall Predators being mentioned (possibly because it took place on another planet). By that reasoning, it removes that movie from current canon as well.

Yeah the actual game itself with the OWLF Recordings and Dutch tapes actually bridges the game more thoroughly to Predator, Predator 2 and The Predator than Stalking Shadows ever does. With a few brief exceptions, this book really just supplies fans the backstory to

Well that is interesting, what is the source for this snippet? And who are "they" and where do they mention a blackout in 2010?
This snipped is in the synopsis listed on Amazon
They being either the book or the tapes, they, gotta check it later, I remember someone talking to me about it but I wasn't paying attention haha
I'll try finding it tomorrow

Ah! I think you might be referring to the Pred tech surge described in the May 24th 2010 OWLF Recording #18. The writing is kinda weird for those recordings, but Keyes is describing an incident that occurred shortly after Dutch's run-in with the female Predator in early March of 2008, where he got his face scars. It may come up again in a future DLC, I hope it will, but as-is it's just a weird and ambiguous reference. That is, of course, if this is indeed what you might be thinking of. But I could be wrong.

That's probably it, I wonder if it has something to do with Predators, we may know in the future, maybe we'll get a Royce update with audio logs too lmao

I've not played Hunting Grounds but a DLC with a Super Predator encounter would be cool.  Maybe add the hunting planet as a map.  Player team is captured and dropped off.  Be neat, also good way to the in some extra lore updates!

Haha, I still feel guilty over some technical problems I was having so I'm glad I could create some laughs. But I know, right? Ellison can't put a sniper somewhere on a roof ready for Dutch to leave the bar? Instead he hires a homeless man? Maybe we should just be happy he was trying to give the homeless employment.

Lol. Yeah, James Patrick Cronin has been doing all the Predator Audiobooks lately, you can tell early on in Stalking Shadows that he's deliberately trying Not to do an Arnie impression, but that goal was a bit too herculean and his Dutch voice is kinda all over the map for most of the book. Later on towards the end he sorta settle's on Arnie-light and it feels a bit more comfortable.

Ironically enough, the Dutch tapes from the game are using the real Arnie, which is mostly awesome but kinda weirdly not Dutch-like sometimes. Like in the recording from March 3rd 2008 right after his entire squad is killed and he only survives because the big Female Yaut lets him live after scarring him up, he just kinda glides over the fact that all his buddies were just slaughtered in front of him. but eh. c'est la vie. Mr Schwarzenegger is incredibly awesome for even being a part of this.

Late 30's in 1997 would put Harrigan in late 50s in 2017. Pushing 65 perhaps in 2025? I think it can still work if he's kept himself in shape. Maybe Mike has also had some of the Yautja juice that keeps Dutch so spry...

It's pretty fascinating actually, what started as movie magic from the first aid scenes with the Jungle and City Hunters, got expanded quite a bit in the games with the UV crystal shard things that heal your pred up proper, and now 30 years later, genuine science is exploring the miraculous efficiency of undifferentiated stem cells and biologically based nano-technology, and suddenly it all doesn't seem so far fetched any more.

If Yautja, being as advanced as they are, have blood that is infused with what are essentially artificially produced, self-replicating stem cells, powered internally by the natural biological processes and storing their charge in the form of phosphorescent cells, then they would have the ability to be externally charged by exposure to higher energy UV stimulation when those natural biological functions become impaired or compromised. Just like holding a black light up to a glow stick.

From: https://www.thoughtco.com/fluorescence-versus-phosphorescence-4063769
Quotea phosphorescent material absorbs high energy light (usually ultraviolet), causing the electrons to move into a higher energy state, but the transition back to a lower energy state occurs much more slowly and the direction of the electron spin may change. Phosphorescent materials may appear to glow for several seconds up to a couple of days after the light has been turned off. The reason phosphorescence lasts longer than fluorescence is because the excited electrons jump to a higher energy level than for fluorescence. The electrons have more energy to lose and may spend time at different energy levels between the excited state and the ground state.

If the artificial stem cell nanotech is designed for Yautja physiology and biological processes, then it could potentially support the replenishment of their cells indefinitely before other entropic forces eventually broke down the system's functioning. Perhaps for Yautja it is indeed not the Years, but just the Mileage.

Being not designed specifically for human physiology, but adaptable enough to function with cells in that foreign environment, the artificial cells could very well function when introduced in the high doses one would receive from eating a Yautja heart perhaps. But, not possessing of the natural Yautja biological functioning which would normally consistently recharge the cells internally, the artificially produced stem cells would run out of their charge and replenishment ability much faster without external UV stimulation, stimulation that Yautja biology is perhaps adapted to but which is inherently harmful to human biology through the damage it inflicts to our DNA.

He says she's way more skilled than anything he's come up against and observes her like
"As close to royalty as their kind has"
Could be the first time we ever saw a matriarch in lore! ;D

lol. You do realize it's a prequel to "The Predator", right?. So I think my Predator fan card is still in good standing.  :D. I was planning to read it after seeing the movie, but once I saw the film a second time, I couldn't bring myself to do it, to read anything attached to that.

But I'm not the biggest reader, I'm trying to change that, but I'm more a comic guy... read every Predator comic, not every Predator novel... but here's my current limited library (excluding Alien & AvP novels).

It's not every Predator novel I own. For instance, I know that I have the Predator novelization somewhere around the house.  And looking at these, it is amazing that the Predator 2 novelization, Turnabout and China Sea is collectively worth $250 on a good day.

Oh yeah, hunters and hunted isn't bad at all.  Shows how much better the predator could have been

I only have one gripe and it's actually not even something I care about that much, spoilers ahead!

Gave the podcast a listen and I'm certainly siding with Ridgetop on this one! Can't believe Voodoo hasn't read "Hunters and Hunted"?! Are you even a Predator fan???

lol. You do realize it's a prequel to "The Predator", right?
It's a significantly better story than The Predator as well.

Yeah I heard. Eventually I'll make the plunge and read it. The Predator novelization too which I heard wonderful things about *sarcasm*.

Other than the slightly dumb/nonsensical Predator escape, it was a great read.

Still made more sense than the Predator just deciding to get up in the film though.

Yeah, that part in the book was odd and a little confusing.  Really didn't make a lot of sense
