Not in a "this is what I want in a Predator film" but in a "This is straight up b-movie schlock." I love b-movie cheese.
The problem is this isn't a b-movie. It's a big budget "event" picture with all the modern gloss on it, which basically rubs off a lot of the b-movie charm that my head added to those scenes.
I wish Fox were paying me. A little extra income wouldn't hurt.

Oh I'm with you all the way, actually. The dogs were horrendous - never liked any of it in the script, even if it was a B movie I still wouldn't like them. But I'd rather have a loveable, hunting dog companion look like a regular dog than one with mandibles and dreads.

Honestly i'd love if they had the mandibles. Just as most mammalian species on Earth share similar jaw structure characistics, I could see a number of species from the Predators world sharing traits.

I've actually seen that statue before, and I like it! I do. I think the face is more of a mixture of human dog and Predator. But the issue I have is making the Predator so cute and domesticated, instead of a proper hunting companion to a Predator. It's more in the characterization of the dogs. If they're going to go the wagging tail route, I'd rather just see it with a different face... something like the statue would be easier to accept then straight up mandible and dread combo.

I've never seen that statue before, really liking the designs though! I'm getting a Falkor (furry dragon from Neverending Story) vibe. Must be the eyes, nose, and tail.
Funko has a way of making all characters look like little cuties so I'm not going to pass too much judgment. But dammit if it isn't cute, I think I like the face.
I do not like the Predator dog in that statue at all, far too familiar.
I would prefer the Predator Hounds seen in Predators modified a little bit (you know, mandibles, less spikes, with tail, etc.).
I don't want to see human dogs with Predator face.
I would have preferred a re-use of the Hounds from Predators but I'm just glad they don't have mandibles on them. Impossible to really tell from a Funko though.

Is it really the Pred-Dog though? I mean seriously, i know the Funko is supposed to look comic-booky, but look as that upper rabbit teeth... that can't be it, it looks ridiculous.
Also, the VFX guys told the set reporters that "they have some sort of dreads to them", not on the funko though.
If that really is an indication for the hounds then for christs sakes, give us the Rodriguez versions.

Yeah, I don't know how they can pull that off without it being as absurd as it sounds. I'm hoping it will end up being similar to the Predators hounds, which were perfect in my opinion.
I hope they are more creative than sticking a predator face on a dog's body, that would be silly as hell. I like the pred-hounds from Predators, they were a bit goofy, but at least they didn't have mandibles and dreadlocks! I'm not saying it can't be done well, I just have my doubts that putting mandibles and dreadlocks on the hounds will look natural and well placed.

This. I am all for new creatures, but mandibles and dreads on a dog probably won't work.
Also, those mandibles are good for holding food, signaling and communication. Not for biting.
Yeah, I'm not keen on dreadlocks either but it's unclear if this'll have them. They should have just stuck with the same design from Predators IMHO.
I hope to high hell they don't have dreds.
I still want to see whatever those spider things were going to be.
This designs not bad, a different creature than the Predator Tracker Dogs from Predators, its no where ridiculous as I worried it could have been. It almost reminds me of that Alien Dog Woola from that John Carter movie. https://i.pinimg.com/736x/dc/50/68/dc506852ccc671ce4dd866434a910abc--comedy-film-the-martian.jpg

I'm totally in agreement with you there. Not using the Dog design, from Predators, here is a missed opportunity I think. It would have been a great nod to that movie and tied it nicely and also further established the Dog in the cannon as an addition to Predator Species, instead of a one off, never to be seen again.

There's so many concepts from Predators in this that it just seems a strange choice to me.
HUH, what happened to the Predators P3 Dog designs..... Thats a missed opportunity to not have them in the film. Unless those dogs are just another creature the Preds have tamed.
Happy they ditched the crappy Predators 2010 dog design... still wondering how this will look on screen though.
The upgrade here is different from what we saw in the trailer though, so who knows if the dogs won't be different either

And I really don't mind. I don't need big budget films with this creature, I need creative tales adhering to the same concept of a creature hunting unknowing prey in the form of armed men.

I'm not a fan of the whole naked design. It could have still been a 'Super' Predator but have some cool looking armour and weapons. I like the face design from what we've seen but it feels like a missed opportunity to give us an iconic looking lead Predator.

But that's not interesting nor fitting. We have plot about this intergalactic alien head hunter, known for his superior technology, who wants to be even better and more deadly (whole mutation subplot), yet he runs around in his shorts . Not every fitting.

I disagree entirely. I think a more primal Predator is the more interesting route. We've already had a lot of Predators with
new toys. It is fitting of a bigger more animalistic Predator to prefer to use less tech and be
superior at hunting and killing himself. Without the aid of extra tech.

I think that was the original intent, but now they could be "on second thought"ing it and trying to tie all the movies together more cohesively. I honestly would have preferred Upgrade remaining something entirely different than the hunting party in Predators, but at least they're not discounting what happened in the other movie(s). Makes me wonder if the Super Predators are all from the same clan or if the only thing they have in common is roiding up.
I'd prefer the latter, but I also like to think Falconer and Tracker were classic Predators, just bad bloods, that joined their freak of nature brother, Berserker, rather than abandoning him.
I'll take what the movie will give me, if it's not stated that they are related in it, then they never were.

Realistically, another AvP is a huge ways off, if even a possibility, but I still want a proper one.
My logic to this is the fact The Predator has direct links to AVP , in that sense anything is possible. Add to it the failure of covenant , it actually sort of makes sense.

True. But I wouldn't put it past em' to test the waters. Both AVP's made a decent return for their money. And this was before the prequels, Predators, The Predator, Alien Isolation, and cameos made in games like Ghost Recon and Mortal Kombat. This universe is very much alive on large and small screens, though there have been some stumbles.
There's little reason we shouldn't get another AVP. Yes, it's hard for fans to forget how bad the last two were because we think about this stuff alot, but John Q. Public might not even remember or care. With lower budget risks like deadpool making bank, maybe we can even get an R rating. It's not totally and completely impossible to make a good AVP movie. If The Predator does so-so, coupled with the lukewarm response to covenant, somebody may decide to combine the two again, purely for the spectacle and a quick buck.
But it doesn't have to be Michael Bay's AVP, or Aliens 2. Somewhere out there, a good idea is still waiting. And I hope we get to see it on the big screen one day. Because for me, it's not about the Alien VS the Predator, it's about the humans trying to survive both. Surely this can still be done for an acceptable amount of money. C'mon Hollywood.

Because neither one of them did particularly well (Hence why AVP:R got less money.), both were critically mixed/negative.
I'll keep repeating it. They never had faith in the concept from the get go, and after making what they could out of the cash cow, they are not likely to visit AVP ever again, or a the very least not for a good long while.

My logic to this is the fact The Predator has direct links to AVP , in that sense anything is possible. Add to it the failure of covenant , it actually sort of makes sense.
It has direct connections in the sense that fans of the series can point at a wall prop and go "Oh, that's AVP." That does not mean there's even a clandestine attempt to start something bigger.
Indeed. I think we might be reading a little too much in the set decoration. I still think it's just what ADI had knocking around or still had the moulds at hand. It's something I do plan on asking when/if we get to chat to them following the film's release but I do think people shouldn't put much on them at this point.

There's little reason we shouldn't get another AVP.
Because neither one of them did particularly well (Hence why AVP:R got less money.), both were critically mixed/negative.
Ultimately, this. Fox haven't abandoned the concept, though. I know that. But the last attempts haven't gone down well. Alien's revival hasn't done as well as they wanted and there's a fair bit of negative press to overcome with The Predator too...so that might still not do well. I think the chances of a new AvP film are slim enough as it is. If The Predator doesn't do well, they'll be even slimmer.

Have faith brother. The big mouse may save it yet.
Hey I'm not saying I actually want a AVP film tbh, it's tack to me however , I just think considering the fact there are links , however small , it's totally possible. In fact I would argue the chance isn't slim , It's actually quite high. The amount of merchandise Fox makes on AVP probably amounts to a nice bank balance. At the end of the day it's a business , and if The Predator fails. Then fox will be looking to try new things. At its heart it's just capitalism.
I'm all for a properly executed AvP. But that means making the classics scary again, having suspense and putting human characters in relatable situations.
You know, all the things they rarely do in films these days.
I don't think it's just rare to attempt it, it's a triple task because it's also difficult to do and with AVP you're intergrating not one creature with it's own distinct legacy and identity but two.

Yep.
It's not likely. Dark Horse can keep making comics, NECA can keep making toys, but the chance we'll ever see another AVP film? Not likely.
I'm someone who
wants another AVP. I believe the concept has a lot of potential that was never even remotely given it's just due on the big screen. I want something that measures up to the comic, the Briggs script, or the tingling feeling I get when I watch the AVP 1999 PC game trailer and think "That's what that movie should have felt like."
Hell, when I was a kid and I saw this trailer on the Resurrection VHS, I was sure we'd hear news of an AVP movie in the near future.
As of right now we'll be so lucky if these two franchises can turn it around independently.
Openmaw didn't you say the friendlies were still in The Predator when I said for months it was the complete opposite and they had been cut ? Not being funny but you do tend to jump the gun a bit. Fox still make a bunch out of the AVP franchise. Be it comics , hot toys , NECA , it goes on and on. A film that came out In 2004 night I add and it's still profitable . It makes total sense business wise to make a follow up / reboot. The fact Shane Black has included some AVP elements should be telling you that. And while you say it's only props , the fact of the matter is we havnt seen The Predator yet , and there could very well be more links in there, Black has already said this film is connected to all the others including AVP. Judging by the failure of alien covenant , Fox are probably thinking about this very subject.
That A3 Fox intro needs to return. It would get the same reaction of hype from me as the first time I saw this return.

Yeah lefty I was thinking a lot about it today , iv come to the conclusion they are in it , but get used as cannon fodder earlier on , and the captured kills them and maybe steals their gear hence why he is in the same mask , seems the logical step at this stage, and maybe that's why they were not featured in the trailers as they were deemed unimportant by Shane and fox as they are killed off early on. Of course I'm just speculating though ! ;)
That didn't even take me two seconds to find.

No. I really do not. I go with the best evidence on hand. Shane Black stepped up his game and made the changes that needed to be made based on test screenings. Which I admitted and gave him kudos for. I have also been defending certain concepts regarding the film as more information has been forth coming. Having an open mind and being willing to change said mind when the facts are in hand is more intellectually honest than blind optimism supported by Jack and his good friend
shit.
I have always maintained that the hybrids, spiders, and the allied Predators were terrible and would need to be changed or excised completely to fix the utterly awful third act. I also maintained that the likelihood of those changes being put into effect this late it into the production was slim to none. I admitted that I was shocked and pleasantly surprised that they had.
I never once tried to pretend like I hadn't called that wrong. I was wrong. They did change it.
Do you not get how un-f**king-likely it is for a movie like this to get a total reworking of it's ending? That only happens when the audience reaction is
shockingly bad. As in, producers and executives having panic attacks and shitting themselves over all the invested cash going up in flames.

They make money via low investment,
low risk,
"tertiary media." Comics, novels, and toys. That has always been where AVP has done it's best. The original AVP comic was one of the all time best selling comics ever.
Fox doesn't need to
make a movie and risk a multi million dollar budget when they can get some assholes to draw cartoons and mold plastic.

The film is not profitable. It barely broke the margins, which is why AVPR got a drastically reduced budget, and had a shorter filming schedule to boot.

I'm not the one saying it. Black said there would be ties. We've been told that the spear from AVP is in there, somewhere. That's your connection to the AVP franchise. Your connection to Predator 2? Keyes son. Your connection to Predator? The original mask. OTHER connections as in other connections to the
other films. Predators (apparently) hasn't happened yet.

No, it does not. It makes no sense to take on another high concept and risky venture like AVP when the first two films were the epitome of diminishing returns and met with scathing critical review. It forced the Predator franchise into soft reboot territory with "Predators" and it was only the incredible pedigree and pull of Ridley Scott that made Prometheus happen. Which was still done with a lot of cautious tip toeing by Fox. "It's an Alien film, without the Alien. It's going to be really classy like the original film, and nothing like those kiddy AVP films."
It doesn't tell me that there are any plans for a future AVP film. Nobody at Fox has indicated they are even
looking into the concept for another AVP film for the foreseeable future. NO ONE. We just got some insider information that indicates nothing is going on with the AVP side of the license on the big screen. ALIEN. Yes. Predator. Depends on
The Predator. Nothing. Nadda. Zilch. About an AVP film, and why would there be?

Agreed 110%. One of the greatest tweaks to a film company logo ever. It tells you everything you need to know about Alien 3. This is going to be a dark and depressing story.
Very glad the dogs are still there. I never bought the rather baseless claims all that had been excised. Seemed like insecure fanwank.

the Upgrade is in a forest in daylight hours or close to it,
guess what, that's the ending I read over a year ago.
Openmaw you have very cleverly took one clip of a conversation I was having for days, and focused on it when if you were to carry on the conversation you will read that I changed my mind. It was me who brought the whole friendly predators not being in the film up in the first place. Ask big daddy John. It was you who was adamant that wasn't the case. And yes you are quick to jump the gun and have been doing it practically all year. How many times have I said give the film a chance , or you don't know that yet until you see it ? Maybe you have seen the film before us all , and have seen something we don't know ? I had a negative moment about the film, mainly because of the script. when things started coming out about it I relaxed. Maybe you should too? You can't honestly say you know what 20 century fox intentions are with AVP, no one does. With the failure of alien covenant and the collapse of alien 5 , if the predator is successful, it would make total sense for fox to incorporate alien into predator again. Not saying it would definitely happen. Just saying I wouldn't be surprised. Fox will be looking to bank on Disney's cinimatic universes model. Alien and predator and blade runner are a way they can do it.

Maybe it will end up better in the movie, the Upgrade from funko is not accurate to the movie as well, but that worries me a bit.

Jesus, i... really? It is a Predator head on a dogs body. Waiting for the movie, but i think i'll like the version from Predators better.
I know they're just Pops but they all look terrible.
Horrible... just like in the leaked script. Now imagine thete was whole other bunch of hybrids looking similar. Awful, yuck.
With the Upgrade being full CGI I imagine that when Funko was designing the 'Super Predator' Pop they had very little source material. It looks so bland.
I hope we see some detailed images of the movie version Upgrade soon.

Thank God they removed them. Yeah, I'm really disappointed it's just dreads slapped on the dogs. Fortunately no mandibles, though.
Umm...interesting.
Not an exact Predator head I think...just look at the dogs' eyes...they are on the sides of the head. And the mouth is different also, but yeah...quite similar to the Predators.
Maybe they have much shorter dreadlocks then a Predator which could look cool.
We'll see. :)
Wtf? Lame
Dreads on a dog? Fan fiction level :')
It won't be exactly like that in the movie obviously. Not a fan of this though.
Yeah, will have to see how the none Funkoed version looks, of course.
Oh god. What happened ??? I thought they had changed their minds and went without the dreads/Predator head? This, as expected, looks utterly ridiculous. Especially with what they want to do with it in the movie.
They had great looking predator hounds, yet they chose those abominations. Just Great FOX.
Thanks! I hate it!
I could make better concept art for a Predator dog that doesn't involve slapping dreds on the thing, this was a terrible decision.
If this is a accurate respresentation of how they'll appear in the film it's going to take me out of it every time they appear.
Honestly, hope to the Heavens that this is an Alien Covenant situation where the merchandise design is different from the film design.
Well we can safely say that the dreads are dreadful

may as well have the mandibles the teeth are exactly the same. Makes me thankful the hybrids were cut
If this was the design philosophy for all the hybrids then yes indeed, I'm glad they have been removed.
I thought the spider-creatures were going to be along the lines of headcrabs with crustacean overtones, maybe mandibles.
But if they're as bad in design as the Predator Dogs here I'm glad they're gone.
(Hopefully the film versions were changed in design after Funko pops got the designs way back when.)
It's my only hope for not laughing at these things come September.
Honestly the way the script described the spiders I thought they were just going to be a Predator head with lobster legs.
I guess we'll know when the Blu-ray comes out, failing that a book that contains some amount of BTS material, failing that when ADI releases footage on their YT channel.
There's a book coming out around the end of august as far as I know.

Hm, that seems strange. If the Ollie design is still showing up on marketing material, maybe they are planning on using both in the movie.... odd move though :-\
There's still hope apparently
Hmm it does have the Limited "Chase" sticker on both the green pred hound and the maskless Captured Predator box (dammit they're gonna make me work for those). Maybe the red and green hounds are just collectibles.
The box for Captured (with a mask) only features 3 figures for the series, one of those already being Captured (with a mask), then Upgrade, and Ollie.
Who knew little vinyl dolls could cause such a stir.
Lol 😆
I've kind of grown to like the dreaded pups... at least for the collectible figures sake.
Ugh if I never received one single Alien Pop toy as a gift a couple years ago, I would be able to resist the urge of buying these stupid vinyls. But now I gotta "catch em all".
At least I've managed to steer clear of collecting the NECA figures, I'd be broke and constantly searching for those on top of my clothing and shoe expenses. :P :D

Maybe it's all an elaborate ruse to secure us in the theatre seats, and then surprise us with the final Predog version. Interesting that they'd make the maskless version of Captured as Limited. You'd think that'd be just a standard available figure.
I don't know how you collectors show the restraint that you do :D I don't collect, but if I did my home would probably be
