Title: The Predator TV Spots Thread
Post by: Wobblyboddle77 on Aug 03, 2018, 10:49:07 PM
Hi Everybody,
Long time lurker here, below is a you tube link i found for the new trailer of 'The predator' that has just been released, it shows a lot of new shots including the predator running, he looks quite stealthy and quick, shots of characters hanging off the predator ship, with a very retro looking title screen shot.

                                          What do uou guys think?

                                          Enjoy

Infrared with no mask on indeed.

I can let it slide because it's roid-boy though, if he doesn't need a mask it would be make sense to have cranial implants instead.

wow that quick shot of the predator running looked great. Prob the best execution I can remember seeing a predator run that didn't look silly.

I'm not really digging the tone of the trailer, but I liked that very first shot of Fugitive and the one of him running across the roof looked so great. Very agile and natural, I can't wait to see how they used Brian Prince's parkour skills.

Tone of the trainer is really off

I'm jist hoping the film is different and the rather bad trailers are designed to attract young millennials and teens

I hope that shot of the "infrared" of super looking at other predator is only used when it doesn't have a mask.  Because I want the original infrared look for when the preds wear their mask.  That shot reminded me too much of AVP.

Predators I'd say. In Predators there was this poor looking (not) infrared sight, with orange people and purple background.

The infrared is fine without the mask for the Upgrade I guess, but I would prefer the red vision from the original Predator. But I'm not a fan of the overall aesthetic of it. Still looks like a regular infrared camera was used.
In the original, it looks and feels more Alien looking and it also looks like it's natural vision for the Predator than this and in Predators. Predators (2010) may have gone back to the red vision without the mask, but it still feels like a regular infrared camera was used and it was too sharped looking. The original feels more natural because it's soft and blurry in areas while only a certain area is focused.. It's like if you squint your eyes a little bit, it does darken around the edges a little.

Cool, very action packed as usual. Also it's a mess of knowing what will be in the final movie and what will not be... I mean
Spoiler
loonies hanging outside of the ship is from the leaked script before reshoots, Traeger mentioning Preds could invade earth also...
[close]
Damn, i can't wait to know what the final cut will be like, but right now it's very hard to follow !

And like i said, this god damn thermal vision without a mask... I'll go with it, maybe they'll explain why it's like that in the movie

So I see they're going with the 'Predators' thermal vision, why can't we just get the original? anyway, looks fun. That's the most light-hearted trailer for a predator film ever.

The new trailer looked awesome. I must admit they're making the predators look like badasses who mean business.

Although I can't help but think the predators are the cause of global warming now with that one bad joke. :P

Man, that's sene where Quinn aiming from the door of the bus reminds me of the Predator 2 where Harrigan was driving and looking from the door hole. Also the whole scene in the bus remind me of the helicopter scene in Predator 1  ;D
Did anybody noticed whats up with Upgrade skin?

Also about complainings about thermal vision without a mask, is everybody cool woth the same mistake in Predator 2?

Predators see thermal without a mask. In the first movie they had to douse the jungle down with ice water and get the actors to stand next to a fire to get them to register properly; what you see at the end is basically what the cameras actually saw without any mucking around.

That's so cool, I never knew this! Didn't imagine it was that hot out there. So that case is basically like the first encounter with the hive in Aliens?

Not the case, trailer stuff could still be full of pre-reshoots material.

In effect, especially for those of us that have not read the leaked script; the trailer is merely a proof of concept.

Yup, his skin is changing. Looks like his natural body armour is activating when he gets ready for fighting, look at his shoulders and legs, he gets bulkier looking at fugitive.

If that's really the case (could be cloaking as well), then i love this idea.

Look at my above post. He gets bulkier and his skin color changes from brownish to redish/black. He looks much more athletic at first, and then activates his body armour when he's about to fight, look at the shoulders.

Like goosebumps, but with armoured skin.

It has some kind of metamorphosing and changing of texture on the skin. Or  he is growing armor (like Johnny Handsome said), making his skin get thicker, or he actually can camouflage himself with his skin like a real chameleon. Look closely on the skin of Upgrade at 00:17.

His head is also changing, his forehead is like a normal Predator, then he gets the spikes in the middle, like an irokese.

Thanks for lighten me up, guys. I did not catch that kind of metamorphosis...quite a quick shot.

It seems, he and his body is preparing to fight, as you say. It's some kind of offensive/defensive biomechanism... He grows spikes, you can see it on his forehead and also on his left upper arm as well (or the latter could be only skin tone change, I don't know...now I'm already seeing little spikes :D ).

This wasn't in the script, but I can say that I also like this. :)

At 0:03 I think that's an other section which was part of the reshoots. I mean that it's Stargazer base, where they are but Casey is in a kinda military cloth with a pistol (different cloth to what she wears in the Rundown behind the scenes video when she tries to get out from Stargazer base) and also Nettles (and Nebraska) is with her...already with a gun in his hand.
Those who read the script know how the heroes get away from Stargazer base when Fugitive escapes (I'm referring especially to Casey), so I think this scene is after
Spoiler
the attack of Stargazer base, when Upgrade lets the heroes get some 'escape adventage' before he starts to hunt them down
[close]
, as Hicks mentioned from the test screenings.
Spoiler
But why does Upgrade attack Stargazer base?
[close]
I'm quite curious about this - probably new - section.

Upgrade definitely change color or something, he is light brown in this one.

And i love the guy getting impaled through the chest, brutal ! I would so love for it to be the blade that fugitive fires from his wrist, but i doubt it, too small. It would be so cool though ! A grappling retractable hook/blade sort of thing !

It's the updated look, fugitive has his plasma caster now. It's most certainly a close to finished shot.

Just went back and noticed what you said about the skin changing too, interesting. Yeah perhaps he alters to the red and black color when he's fighting or something. Good that his mouth is not hanging open now though.

20th Century Fox has released a new TV spot for The Predator. “The Ultimate Predator” spot features some new footage including a look at the Predator heat-vision and HUD, as well as a new harpoon weapon.

The commercial announces that tickets for the film are now on sale.

Some Italian tv spots have also been released. While most of the footage is the same, the throw-down sequence with the “Upgrade” is lingered on a bit longer, and we see a new shot of the Predator spaceship flying past a fighter jet.

In a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shot of this Italian TV Spot, you can see the Upgrade’s skin changing form and color as he approaches the “Fugitive” Predator.

It also seems as though the CGI for the “Upgrade” Predator has been changed from how we saw it in the last trailer. Check out the comparison below.

What do you guys think about this sort of harpoon attached to a rope weapon ? Do you think it's pred ? Or human firing at another human ?

A grappling retractable hook/blade sort of thing !

The same came to my mind, too.
Maybe they reused the cut Defectors' grappler hook equipment as a new gadget...
...if it is a Predator equipment. :) But we don't know. :P

Possible but that would mean they added the rope thing as it wasn't like that in the script, only for him to toss his victims around or bring them to him, MK's Scorpion style. Could be neat.

Yeah, I noticed some slight changes to Upgrade's face right away. I love Fugitive already, sad to think of his fate... and yes, I figured the two shots of him firing his wrist weapon and the harpoon were just cut together to look like the same sequence. I guess I'm indifferent to the harpoon, nothing special.

Slight changes? His entire colour palette has changed.

It seems it took us to get a CGI Predator to get the "X" shaped mandibles back.

I totally get what you saying. What I think and hope for this movie to be good, not a "Predator movie", but an actuall good "Movie". Because Shane Black is actually a good filmmaker. Now if we going to get a good movie it means we will get a continuation of this franchise, therefore the come back of a tribal predators will be quastion of time(my hope), and if John Davis the producer of all predators movies will listen to the fans or at least look at old movies, he will bring back the tribal feel. which a lot of us love about predator. Especialy taking in to account that Shane Black doesn't erase that culture, and just expends it. That's of course just my speculation and thoughts.

But at this point we do need just a "Good" movie. Because the only reason we all love the first predator because it's just was a "Good" movie. And who knows maybe this new movie will actually grow on people (depending on it's quality of course) and fan will start liking new ideas and designs.

Maybe a bit of both, most obvious are the shoulders and legs. They look very meaty and shiny, also have that typical brownish Predator colour, but then change to a more hard shell-like skin, with spikes, also gets a bit bulkier. Definitely some kind of defense mechanism.

The 'over here' won't be in the final film. A majority of the Pred sounds are just placeholders until final sound mix is complete. The recycled Predator clicks won't be there either and will no doubt be replaced by a poor imitation that sounds nothing like the iconic originals. We haven't had a decent sounding Predator since P2.

The upgrade is seriously growing on me.  I think it's interesting how it's "evolved", yet comes off as very primal and primitive; stripping away technology for more natural and traditional hunting advantages.
If it's able to camouflage itself by changing it's skin rather than cloaking, I think that would be f**king amazing and potentially terrifying.
God help me I'm pumped for this...not looking forward to that serious let down next month.

Hmm.. the growing armour thing is quite interesting.
So i'm going to guess his armoured mode is much heavier and less agile than his normal state, requiring him to become vulnerable in order to climb, etc.
Maybe this could come into play during the final battle...?

It also makes me think he'll have some kind of Indominus Rex style colour change as opposed to technological cloaking.

I got a feel that that shot of the laser targeting Lynch's face is a nice nod to Bill Duke's death in the original. It's like he's aiming somewhere dead sure that the Predator is there, but then the laser targets him from a different direction.

I hope I don't get screwed on the embargo tho. Sometimes they embargo us even when the embargo for american sites has already lifted - happened with Tomb Raider. If this doesn't happen again, I'll bring the goods as soon as possible.

So it seems the assassin is part of the sequence that seem to take place in a sort of quarry... Where the harpoon weapon seem to be used in the previous spot too, so it could totally belong to him.

That's not a quarry.
That's Stargazer base I think...that area where the black SUVs go through (in the beginning of the second trailer IIRC).

But why would the assassin attack stargazer ? Damn those reshoots are confusing !

Yes, the Upgrade's existence being a secret would have been a big shock, especially if his first appearance was the scene where he rips the regular Predator through a wall and tesrs off his head. Unfortunately the marketing was pretty desperate, and it seems if it hadn't, it would have even less attention than now.

The concept of Upgrade still feels dumb and unnecessary, but design wise the biggest issue is the the small and frail looking mandibles.

Post by: ELDERCLANLEADER on Aug 19, 2018, 01:31:12 PM
Roka I fundamentally agree with you. Upgrade is unnecessary. To me we don't need bigger badder DNA enhanced predators. The originals from p1 and p2 should be how they look and act imo. That tribal almost Rastafarian look to them seems to getting eroded film by film.

Also Upgrade to me comes across very Hollywood monster looking. Not a super intelligent extra terrestrial that has conquered space. Still I'm excited for the film. I can overlook my petty differences as long as the film works.

Agreed on pretty much all of this. There are certain details that set the predator apart from other monsters/slashers/aliens/etc, at least to me, and I'm not getting a lot of that from the promo material released so far. I feel like going the "bigger and badder" route and focusing on this new upgrade predator just takes us even further from that. But like you I'm excited for the movie, bought my tickets already - I'm just keeping my expectations low.
Title: Re: The Predator TV Spots Thread
Post by: ELDERCLANLEADER on Aug 19, 2018, 05:39:14 PM
Yep that's exactly my stance, there were things that just made Predator well Predator to me. Little things that you don't find in other monster movies.. If you go to far the other way and don't retain the originals ideas , it will just become a dumbed down version of something very iconic. That is my fear for this film. I'm still excited but like you I'm keeping my expectations low on this one. I understand the need to be fresh and inject new ideas. But it shouldn't be at the predators expense. Really not feeling the designs either and iv really tried to. But they just don't resemble the predators I love dearly.
For me this whole clan war/bad blood storyline should be left for the comics. I just want a badass predator film in the vein of predator 2. It's not that hard to ask.

It's funny how things work out. Back in 2010, I was saying the same thing about the black super predators.

I was so wrong. In retrospect, that's forgivable. Since they were still traditional, a mere subspecies, slightly larger. They weren't 10 foot tall embarrassing moronic upgrades.

I remember having similar thoughts myself.  Seems almost laughable, given how much "more" the new Predator is now  :(  My respect for the Super Predators have grown tenfold lol.  And for Cruficied, because although he was only there for 10 minutes, by god it was an authentic 10 minutes.

Though I think where this film will be an immense improvement is the ensemble cast.  I'm really excited to see how those guys work together.

I never perceived the "Super Predators" as much different from traditional Predators. They're not. A little bit bigger, a little bit bunkier, sure, but that's about it. It's like Noland says; they're like wolves to dogs - but there are dog types out there that are every bit as big as wolves, they're not that different in appearance. The Super Predators differ more on their personality, their hunt ethics and methods. No big deal, it's a welcome expansion to the lore - as is the Assassin. That one actually is a different, brand new type of Predator. "Unnecessary" is relative, a lot of things are "unnecessary" until we see them. It was "unnecessary" for them to make T-800 the good guy in T2, but they did and look at what we've got. As of recent we've found out there is a specific reason for him to be the way he is, and it's another interesting addition to the mythology. "Bigger doesn't mean better" and blabla yeah everybody knows that; but the Assassin is not just bigger. It's clear he's got new tricks to offer, and I really wanna see that. He doesn't need to be better than the classic Predator, Shane himself has said that nothing beats the classic. He's just supposed to be different, something new, and I'm completely down for that even if he doesn't end up being my favorite Predator of all time. Or, who knows, he might just end up being. Everything could happen.

Superman and Batman Vs Aliens and Predator

That was a surprisingly good comic! And pretty good artwork through most of it! Same artist who did AvP: Fire and Stone iirc.

I agree, I just discovered that comic. There are surprisingly many combinations of AvP comics involving Batman, Superman or the JLA.

Also we see the assassin's left gauntlet deployed, there's something popping above and underneath, with the assassin closed fist in between. Maybe it's the harpoon, or another weapon ? We already know the wristblade is on the right gauntlet, so there's that.

I agree, you clearly see Quinn getting shot with some energy weapon in the same forest location in the other behind the scenes video, so i think it's on his left arm, and maybe he has the harpoon and wristblade on the same gauntlet, the right one... Or the wristblade IS the harpoon and can be shot like that.

It doesn't look as numbingly God-awful as it did in that image from that Japanese Magazine, and the face actually looks good, not as much like a Predator as previously thought.
But i'll reserve an opinion until I see the movie,

I was talking about when Munn's character says "That's a hunter, not a Predator" I remember it was referenced a couple times in the script.

I really like that it's also a nice little nod to Jim and John Thomas' original title for the Predator script.

I did not mean the exact look of the creature because it does not match of course...but kinda similar.
Instead I meant about the fact the original design was ignored so they killed River Ghost in the film. :)

Yeah, similar scene. But that's not a thing...that's a shuriken.  :) Which makes me think if Assassin will use a shuriken also... Because for me it seems that scene takes place at the final hunt...not at Fugitive's time.

Curious about this too. It's difficult to see whose perspective belongs to who. The tv spots also give the impression that the humans are going to be in the middle of a fight between the two Predators throughout the length of the movie.

Spoiler
Wonder if they changed this from the original intent of the film. Perhaps Fugitive makes it longer into the movie than what was originally planned? Still hoping for a third Predator despite nothing being mentioned...

I think the vision that has the soundwave HUB is Fugitive's vision. Looks too technological to be from the Upgrade, it looks like it comes from a helmet.

I rather thought about P2 with the speargun projectile :)

Also, this movie has so much self-irony and nods to it predecessors as I see it atm. The dialogue between Munn and Brown about how the creature is called. That ones a giant plus in my eyes  :)

I don't think so.
Spoiler
What I can imagine is that they expanded the scenes after Fugitive's crash landing. I mean the slaughter of McKenna's men in Mexico. The longer that scene takes, the more believable is the arrival of the Stargazer helicopter "so fast".

Also I think, that the vision mode with the HUB is Fugitive's. An organic eye wouldn't create this.

"I ain't got time to bleed." "Oh, ok...you got time to duck?"

"What's the matter, the CIA got you pushing too many pencils?"

"Strap this to your sore ass, Blain."

"Stick around."

"You killed a pig - you think you could've found something bigger?"

"Its ok, I'm a cop" "I don't think he gives a shit."

"So what happened to El Scorpio?" "Oh he's out front having lunch."

"Hey are your balls ok?" "Fine, how are yours?"

"Okay everybody, just take a deep breath. Loosen your sphincters. We don't need any rush hour Rambos here."

"Knock, knock."

I'm really tired of the exhausted "but Predator had jokes tooooooo" argument. The one liners in that movie mostly occured during the first act when it was still a red meat, rocknroll action porn in the tradition of Comando. Once the Predator started hunting the team and it slowly dawned on Dutch's men what they were dealing with the movie became much more earnest, the cheesy jokes and one liners started to dry up. By the time the Predator shows up things are pretty grim.

This movie looks as irritatingly smarmy as self aware as any trashy MCU or NuWars movie and I doubt the movie will let thirty seconds go by without one of its characters making a Buffy quip to keep its audience from getting to invested in what's going on.

"You are one ugly motherf**ker..."

They're peppered throughout. It's a valid counter-argument. Predator was plenty fun and plenty funny. You haven't seen The Predator. You don't know it isn't going to come off the same. Shane and other people have spoken about how aware they are of getting the right balance. They're conscious of it.

We've got tons of TV spots, but is there a reason why a second full-length trailer (aka the one to be avoided at all cost) has not been released?

The timing of the humour is very important, and Shane seems to be a master at injecting humor at meaningful times

That's a great trailer, and yet I admit I continue to be bemused by the vastly different tones in the different trailers and TV spots! Makes it look like completely different movies sometimes.

Predator comes with subtitles lol

Kinda baffles me they ditched the original vision from 1 and 2... it was way more spooky... Transformers dawn of extinction had some very similar looking vision that comes much much closer... but they just choose not to.

We were promised guts and gore, and it appears that is what we will be receiving, maybe even a little in excess  :D I did like the suspense in that scene though.

I was wondering if the big guy had a plasma caster. I wonder why they went with him having it on his wrist?
I'm wondering how he's switching his FOV when he doesn't wear a biomask...

Lol, I'm with ya. I would have LOVED to see the original cut. (Not saying the "friendlies " were the greatest idea in terms of continuity or anything)  I just love seeing different predator personalities.  I heard they were in the film for a short period of time,  so it probably would have been a let down. But would have wanted to see it none the less...

Morons, next time don't bring trained military men to fight predators, just hire female scientists. Give them a gun and they will show them how it's done.

That's how every movie or is. The trained soldiers always fail but a kid or normal guy end up winning in the end.

Just left the theatre, yes the spit was a message.  Global warming was a message.  And this is my message to the makers of this film.  Dear Black and Co., I just wanted to say that I have done nothing but support you all through this process, re-shoots, release delays, canon haters, fanboys etc.  I was truly let down.  It felt like a video game.  There were so many fun moments, but were ultimately sabotaged by the very next scene.  I just wish this wasn't a predator installment.   Unfortunately,  I think the franchise is doomed after this.  I had high hopes for this film.  I planned on seeing it 3 times this weekend just to give it my money.  I may not ever watch it again.  To be clear, I was in agreement that "Predator" should be taken in a new direction, and I didn't mind the new expansion to the story.   It's just that.....it felt like a 5year old directed it!  I WAS a fan of Blacks work....until now.  I am angry due to the directorial decisions rather than the story.  Almost every shot was a close up,  action sequences were so fast paced I couldn't even keep up before it cut to something irrelevant.  There were character deaths that didn't even register!  It was a hot mess!  Nothing about this movie screams professionalism.  Oh, and ADI!  still can't figure out a way to close the mandibles without cgi huh? Typical. "Just fold em' back just like Scar!" Someone probably said. Anyway, it was fun, but is my least favorite entry.  I would go as far as to say that AVPR was was handled with more respect and dignity than this film was. Sorry....But I think so.

ZACK'S QUICK POINTS
- zoom out occasionally
- take your time......like the original
- expansion is wonderful, if taken seriously
- keep politics out of your sci-fi movie.
- Olivia Munn CANT run that fast! Humanly impossible!
- I love dogs. However, if they add nothing to the story...put them down. Otherwise it's a confusion bone to chew.
- if you cast someone as an autistic character....he or she shouldn't break character....EVER! It's not confusing, but makes the puzzle pieces not fit so well.
-  why so extra on the Gore? To please  fans?  Fans want their beloved sci fi characters to be treated realistically.
Not for (almost) every  limb, torso, and head to be completely severed with tools that couldn't even accomplish this feat.....no matter who or what the aggressor.
-fire your digital artists. Period. I have seen better  PS4 graphics. (Primarily 3rd act)

Ok, I'm done. Just needed to vent.  Enjoy the movie fellas.  If you can.      3/10

It bugged me the ease with which the humans were able to use the tech, and really disliked how it could magically read their thoughts or "sense threats" like some kind of AI.

I always imagined the Predators as being more self-reliant - the idea of having them have tech with sensors that "sense threats" just seems to go against what the Predators are all about.

Yeah, that was my issue - I'm in the camp of being more than cool with pred/human team-ups, I just didn't like them in camo military gear and how their presence seemed pointless given how quickly they were introduced and then offed.

For me it depends on the way its handled, I didn't have much of an issue with human/droids using Pred tech on games and some books but in this movie it just didn't work out well.

The ideas aren't bad, it's just that some things don't translate right into real life. Of course the predators have tech like that and there is no reason why people couldnt use it. Is like to think that when humans teach the startrek level in the predator universe there would be human ships with predators serving aboard. I cant see anything being enemies for ever, and there are probably bigger badder aliens out there.

But in think there weapons were always auto tracking. They used invisibility cloaks which would be cheating. They dont seem to be much differnt than a person biologically, maybe stronger. But they seem to be just as clumsy and let there cockiness get in the way.

If you include Alien in the Predator timeline, it's not a universe that is co-operative, it has a bleak outlook which wouldn't allow for anything in the vein of Star Trek, which Alien and Predator always aimed to be the opposite of.

Fundamentally they should hunt us.
We'd either wipe them out to near extinction or they would wisely remain in existence, undisclosed hunting us.

They are Predators.

In all seriousness, the violent nature of the Predators has always struck me as the crux of their entire culture. They are a civilization of hunters, all other forms of life are either prey or scenery. Any mercy was based upon a character doing them a solid favor, or going to great lengths to earn their respect. All that gets you is a pass though. It's not like you're best bros with their species for life.

Maybe it's just me. Maybe there are a lot others who feel the same way. But one of the main things that elevates the Alien and Predator franchises above the rest is that there is no room for negotiation. Whether it's pure instinct or absolute pleasure, these creatures are totally hell bent on slaughtering us. There is the hunt, the hive, and nothing else. We will remain at each others throats, even unto extinction.

I kinda like them. The dreads are weired but it kinda makes sense for other predator animals to have them, mammals all have the same body parts so I'd assume there are alot of dreaded animals on their planet, but they also could actually be genetically modified predators. I hope we see the spider alien design soon.

I believe Shane Black wanted them to be more comparable to the dogs we have here on Earth.

Apart from the inclusion of mandibles, I can't imagine a much worse design as the final outcome.

I sent think that would be possible. Any intelligent being can be nagotiated with and can change. That would get boring, I would like to see an avp movie were the predators are working with the humans to fight aliens. Like a startrek Klingon relationship.
