YESSSS.

I'll crosspost the pics of Noomi, my PetSmart rescue job from yesterday:

Went out to open a new checking account, wandered into the Petsmart next door, and became guilt tripped into buying an anole because of the hideous conditions the poor things are kept under. They look miserable. So for $8, I thought "why not" and got this little lady (at least I think it's a lady--she doesn't have a dewlap, so...):

So horribly mistreated at the pet store it likely wont live past a few weeks, but it put its paws on the glass when I put my hand up, and I figured for the price of dinner I could at least let it know some peace in the few weeks it probably has left. She's got scars and a tear on her throat from where she's been attacked or fought with other anoles in her tank (there are only supposed to be 2-3 anoles a tank max, and there were around 12...). Will be keeping her in my old butterfly garden on the back porch, so she can actually experience the sunshine for likely the first time in months.

Also hopefully getting a baby Argentine B&W tegu in the next couple of months. Fingers crossed! They are wonderful.

Saw a niloticus live in the Zoo of Rome once. They named him Markus, I think. Yeah, he was around six feet as well. Perhaps a little bigger, but I don't really remember.

Is it true that crocodiles/gators have very weak muscle power when opening their jaws? I think I saw on tv that you could essentially wrap an elastic band or string around their jaws and it wouldn't be able to snap at you.

Yeah, a strong enough rope, or a man, can block a Crocodile's jaws when they are closed. As you rightfully say, the muscles that open the jaws are not that strong. What is the real deal with Crocodiles is the muscles that close their jaws -- they're incredibly powerful. Crocodile jaws are all about holding and crushing.

I love snakes. They may be dumb as dirt and completely lacking in affection or personality, but they are beautiful animals. These are all the snake species I've owned at one time or another:

Eastern Kingsnake

I'm kind of indifferent honestly. I'd never kill a snake or lizard or turtle on sight like some people, but I don't flip out. I grew up with reptiles. My dad is a herpetologist (not professional) and kept snakes for most of my life. We've got a box turtle (not sure exactly what kind) that's older than me. Had a leopard gecko, some tokei (sp?) geckos which were very angry all the time. A large bearded dragon. I know we had some kind of frog when I was young...I can't remember exactly what kind, something very basic. Also had a "budget's frog," not sure of the spelling of that. It was very large and fat and actually had two large bottom teeth that drew blood on my dad's hand one time.

As far as snakes when I was younger my dad had some california king snakes that I remember, black and white colored. He had some corn snakes, reddish brownish. Some andes mountain milk snakes, one of which was very large. Some prairie king snakes. Some other milk or king snakes which looked like the andes mountains but were colored a little more vibrantly, somewhere between the andes and a coral snake. And I'm sure he had many others that I'm leaving out.

I'm from Illinois, so many of the things I've seen are native to the state. In the wild I've seen countless cotton mouths and copperheads. Countless garter snakes. I've seen some very small snakes too, forget the names. In southern Illinois. I've seen several salamanders also, I think a marbled salamander? It was white and black. Also a yellow/orange one with black spots, forget the name.

So yeah...reptiles really don't phase me at all, but they're a shit ton of work really if you really want to take care of them. Snakes require constant cleaning of their cages. They're always shitting and shedding skin. The food is also kind of a pain too. Feeding them mice. My dad actually bred his own mice and I think purchases frozen "pinkys" as well. Basically, if I saw a snake in the wild and knew it wasn't venomous (except for water snakes cuz they're pretty mean), I'd pick it up and show off to whoever I was with...but I have no desire to keep any reptiles.

Snakes are great. Some of my favorites are:

Reticulated Python
King Cobra
Black Mamba
And the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake

Basically ones that can kill you.

If you have lots of snakes, yeah, it can be a pain. But having one or two is fairly easy. Just make sure they're kept warm and cages clean, fresh water, and have some frozen mice in the fridge. Depending on the species, they're usually low maintenance--especially because they prefer to be left alone, anyway. It's just the initial investment in the expensive crap you need to care for them that is off-putting.

Everytime I've seen copperheads they've been pretty docile. Don't really get all that pissed off at being discovered unlike cotton mouths.

When I was maybe 14/15 I asked my dad if I could keep a snake in my room, I forget what kind it was. Even that just didn't seem worth it to me. Something that didn't give a shit if I was around other than if there was a mouse in my hand and I had to clean his shit up a couple times a week.

Just give me a dog.

I actually used to keep a couple scorpions, and talk about low maintenance animals...

Yeah, snakes aren't very intelligent or fun--but they're beautiful. Like tropical fish, etc. Except they are something you can actually handle and interact with.

Very true. It's always a highlight for me to actually see one just because they're so fun to watch. Whether they're moving slow or fast or you're holding it in your hands, there's nothing else like them in the world. It just sucks when they squirt shit out all over you. And then if they bite you just never stop bleeding even if it doesn't hurt!  ;D

I'm sounding more anti-snake than I am. Don't get me wrong, when I meet people who say they kill snakes with shovels and stomp on them for just seeing them I want to punch that person in the face.

Big spiders I'll agree with you on. :P But snakes are lovely. If you want to get over your fear of them, have someone let you play with a ball python--they're very cute and gentle, even cuddly in their own way.

I used to own a green Anole like the one Cvalda just recently bought. They're fun little guys.

This is the thread for you! Questions, scientific articles, videos, pictures, discussions on the lovely primeval scaly creatures go here.

Let's get sssstarted.
http://www.labuanbajo-flores.com/images/awas-komodo.jpg
In '07 I toured their Archipelago and went to Borneo too.
We saw Komodo Dragons up close, loadsa' huge, impressive males and a fight between two, a hilarious little baby and a buffalo mauled by one.
Everybit as badass as you'd imagine.

Also I have a pet Yemen Chameleon. Used to have a Frilled Dragon but he died.

And since like Birds are like descended from Reptiles, they have a cloaca too right?eww that soo gross that pee and poo go out the same orifice. I feel like reptiles n birds got shafted when it comes to copulation organs. It feels good to be a human with properly designed reproductive organs.

They have internal sex organs and the opening where they crap pee and procreate is called the vent, cloaca. Some snakes have been known to lay fertile eggs without ever being with a male in captivity.

Day 3 of the Noomi Rehabilitation Project. Noticed she wasn't eating the crickets in her enclosure for whatever reason, and she's still very thin, so I took her out, handled her for a bit (she liked the warmth) and then tried feeding her by hand--which she took to like a pro! She went after that cricket like it was made outta ham!

He had it when he was growing but never since he's been around the 4ft mark. I've heard all the arguments, believe me. But he's in top health and has an appetite to show for it. Always have him outside too, which is far better for him than what any ultra violet bulb can possibly do. I've got other reptiles too, maybe upload more photos later. But as you can imagine he's my pride and joy so he got shown off first lol.  :)

Cute kid Cvalda. She has your winning smile.

Super thread.

I have a short film that is right up this thread's alley. Anyone who's ever owned, or fed and cared for a reptile will fall head over heals in love with it. I'll have to look around for it.

In the meantime ... here's some cool gator footage I shot back in 2008.

Spoiler
Shot at a Gator farm in Florida. Some of the bigger gators were said to have been used in Temple of Doom. They shot 2nd unit there for the shots of the Crocs eating the poor guys Indiana Jones knocks off the bridge.

There's something bizarrely cute about baby Royals...

Reptiles are fascinating, especially snakes. Had a passion for them ever since I was a kid watching The Crocodile Hunter. Bought my first corn back in august and it's growing at an alarming rate. Friendly wee chap nonetheless. Sorely tempted to invest in a spotted python and rainbow boa next.

Yesterday I was walking with some friends on a bike path and a friend almost stepped on what at first looked like a stick on the ground, but a second later I realized that it was a snake. Took me by surprise, because it was actually the very first time I had seen a snake outside of a zoo or pet store or any place like that. Googled it today and, from the looks of it, it was a Northern Brown Snake. Tiny, but also pretty cool looking.

Snapped this pic with my phone after the friend pushed it off the path so it wouldn't get stepped on. Looks a lot bigger in the image than it was in real life.

I've seen my fair share of snakes outside since my childhood, but I'm grateful I haven't come across a wild rattlesnake, they aren't around home but a little bit north of my college is a different story.

In my household there are 5 bearded dragons, 4 leopard geckos, and a candy cane corn snake. None of them mine though, I'm the dog guy.

Awesome thread  ;D I love reptiles. Snakes are my favorites though. I've been fascinated by them since I was a child when a cousin of mine owned one. It was a baby, and I loved how it curled around my fingers. They said it was a garden snake? It was bright green. And it was a bit slimy, even though that is not the case with most snakes.

I've tried to catch snakes around where I live. We do have rattlers around here, but they are extremely rare in the urban side of town where I live. I've never even seen one, but they do appear on the news here and then. We pretty much live in a desert.

This is the snake we see the most: trimorphodon vilkinsonii.

(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.southwesternherp.com%2Fimages%2FTvilkinsonii-ElPasoCoTx-FranklinMtns.jpg&hash=dc7aa895c659ce44e151d5c7e39c8cbcd14787c7)

They are mildly venomous but are not considered dangerous, really. Actually, they are protected by law, but nobody cares  :(

Also known as the Texas Lyre Snake, it looks like it is only found in this region. Texas, New Mexico, and part of Chihuahua. We've caught some a few times and then let them go, and in one particular case my brothers friends caught one that was huge. Much longer and thicker than average size, which is about 3 1/2 feet. This one was about 5. I don't know how they managed to catch it without biting them, but they had its mouth closed with cloth and rubber bands and were carrying it around in a back pack. They let it go soon after. Still don't know how it didn't bite them xD

I'd say it's a Garter Snake, due to the line starting from the back of the head and proceeding throghout its length -- but cannot really think of what species it could be. Sizzy would probably tell you that in a heartbeat.

I had the pleasure of adopting a couple bearded dragons (from owners who no longer wanted them) and they were some great lizards... mainly one in particular. If it one reptile i'd like to have again is a beardy.
they are pretty much like a cat of the lizard world.

Yeah. all those guys are really, really, high end in the BP world. Save your pennies. especially those mystic potions.

if your lucky you can find a low-white pie bald BP. they can run for about $300-$600. Pastels are a nice morph that says around the $100 range and sometime you can find spiders and bumble bees around $200 (if i remember right).

I really want a piebald myself :( or even crazier... a red eyed leucistic. yeah. i'll keep dreamin

pretty sure it was planted. no one is dumb enough to go out and grab a king cobra like that (venom attacks the central nervous system). there is a lot of shady cobra charmer related stuff going on over there, and i know that for a fact. people saying "they are special" and can "tame them" its all for entertainment. These snakes are usually not well cared for and malnourished, resulting in less potent venom, and it also makes the snakes sluggish... so "mock bites" usually dont deliver venom.

I don't think so. Though it does run on its hind legs, like in that...interesting GIF you've got there.  :P

Google exists.

Chlamydosaurus cannot run on water like Basiliscus. Not adapted to that.

Frilled lizards make some sweet pets and they are in the same family as the ever popular Bearded Dragon! Unfortunately frilleds are hard to come by and usually pretty pricey ($200-$400) at least here in the US. You may be able to find some slightly cheaper, but there's a good chance that they are wild caught aka animals taken directly from the wild. So you wanna make sure you get a captive breed one. From what I've heard... they can be a little jumpy at times (even if tame) and display, but its just a show.
every animal has its own personalty and temperament though.

Ostensibly the frill.
But as Sizzy said they are quite skittish, even tame ones like my old one. Have to be very slow when handling them, and having food - meal or waxworms - makes them more positive to being held / greeting owners.

But they're pretty endearing. Mine would paw at the window of his viv on starve days in an attempt to get my attention for food.

Yes. It seem like many pet agamids are attention whores

An adult common Indonesian frilled lizard needs a 3ft long by 3ft tall by 2ft wide cage AT LEAST. They also need artificial sunlight (UBV), good humidity, and lots of room to climb.
If you want something easier with not as strict requirements... I'd def recommend a breaded dragon. They pretty much become lap cats as they get older and a single one doesn't as large of a cage. They are much cheaper (from a good breeder they are about $30-$40 for a normal) and easier to find. Beardeds are also omnivores and can eat a lot of fruits and veggies that you can just pick up and the grocery store!

They're not as hard as you think. All you said is true, but with a viv so big climbing branches and UV lights are easy to set up and misting is easily done a few times a day. :)
But as you said yeah Beardeds are great. Them or Leopard geckos are perfect starters.

Oh no, I totally agree! Might be tough for a beginner though given more requirements... as more advanced owners kinda have a good feel for herp care. I don't like to label any animal as "easy" but some are just better to start out with... like bearded dragons, leopard geckos, cornsnakes, and schneiders skinks.

Make sure to do some research though (i assume you still want a frilled lizard?) many of them are still wild caught or farm breed... neither of which are good for the reptile and its not good to support business that does so. Make sure to get a healthy captive bred reptile from a reliable pet store or breeder.

Do any of you own a turtle? My turtle won't open his eyes. Could it be an infection? Is there a type of medicine that I need to pour on his eyes? Or is it an injury? I saw him fall down from a rock face down. It wasn't high, but he started to keep his right eye shut. Now it's both.

They actually make turtle eye drops that are available at most stores that sell reptiles products. Does he have other symptoms? open mouth breathing? swimming strangely? other odd behaviors? also... what temp is his basking spot and water? You might want to put him in a small quarantine tank where you can strictly regulate the cleanliness and temperature.
It might be an infection, if so, separate him from other turtles if you have some.

I bought an eye drop that worked before. It's not working this time. What products have you used if you ever bought any? He keeps his mouth shut except when eating. So he doesn't do open mouth breathing. He doesn't swim strangely. I don't see any other odd behaviors. I don't know the temperature. I keep the turtle warm with a warming light. (Is that what it's called)? I have a UV light too.
Thanks for caring.

Well it doesn't sound like he is has a respiratory infection so that's good. It seems that he would have just injured/infected his eyes...? I would suggest a hardcore clean if you haven't already. Clean and sanitize everything in his tank (tank included) new water... the works.
if you had more pics of his set-up that might help me some... and what wattage of heat bulb do you use? I'm asking cuz the heat of his basking spot and the water is important for your turtles health. They should have a basking spot (the heat lamp) of at least 80 degrees and the water should be about 70 degrees (with a water heater). For the heat lamp they need a UVB bulb which replicates natural sunlight and is for their bone, shell, and scale health. filter is important too... as living in your own filth will cause problems!
I hope you don't mind the questions. I'M just tying to get all the info to make a better assessment.

I changed the water two days ago. I didn't clean and sanitize because I didn't want to hurt the snails and it's hard to find all of them to move to a seperate tank. I'll try to do the cleaning carefully.

That's the interesting thing about the snails. They multiply quickly. I have snails and algae in my fish aquarium. I took a huge chunk of algae and put back all the snails that I could find. Then I placed the algae in the turtle tank. The turtle likes to eat the algae. After over a month, I started to see more and more snails in the turtle tank. And I saw some very tiny swimming creatures that I never saw before.

Anyway, here's the photo of the tank from a different perspective.
I have only one lamp shade. So I switch the heat bulb and the UVB bulb from time to time.

You wouldn't be able to see them in a photo because of their size. They seem to be some sort of underwater insects or crustaceans. I can't see their form clearly. They crawl on or under the pebbles. And they move and swim pretty fast for their size. It's amazing that they can do that because I made the water flow around the rocks. A creature of that size would normally get swept away. I thought they were dust or dirt at first. Then I saw them move regardless the direction of the flow of water.

EDIT: I think they're seed shrimps. They're harmless to the turtles. Now I see what my fishes are eating on the ground. The seed shrimps are visible in the turtle tank because it's brighter in there. -> http://www.planetinverts.com/what_is_that_bug_in_my_aquarium.html (http://www.planetinverts.com/what_is_that_bug_in_my_aquarium.html)

either way. I'd still highly recommend a hard core clean and sanitizing even if its 'a pain' cuz it might be in the best interest of your turtles health. That is standard protocol for all reptiles. Those small "mystery snails" may have parasites that could effect your turtle (even if it was fine before).
Other then that the tank looks super nice... just make sure the heat and water temp are proper.

that's really all i can offer you. other then that you can check out reptile forums for advise and/or take your animal to the vet.

Only thing I say is go to a vet immediately!

Just had a word wity my bro and he a specialist he said its most likely got an infection from the parasites just like Sizzy said, so you need to get the turtle out of the tank and clean the tank top and bottom.

Best Starter Pet Reptiles
Here's my simple recommendation for good 'starter' reptiles. I made this based an availability, ease of care, size, temperament, and hardiness. Just my opinion though... always feel free to do your own research to find what best works for you.

Bearded Dragon
Great pet lizard with a temperament to match! As they get older they pretty much become lap cats and seem to enjoy human interaction (they are very interactive themselves). They eat like pigs on both veggies and insects. An adult needs a relatively large cage. 50-70gal.

Corn Snake and King Snake
A great choice of pet snake (both in the colubrid family) that have great temperaments. Easily tamed. They never miss a meal and eat like pigs on frozen thawed rodents. An adult usually only requires a 30gal cage. The are active snakes though and really like to slither around and explore, though they are occasionally happy to sit in your shirt or hoodie.

Blue Tongue Skink
Similar to the bearded dragon, but smooth to the touch. Very friendly, very mellow lizards that a quite handle-able. Eat like pigs on both fruits, veggies, and insects (you can even make an easy BTS 'chow' in with your food processor to store in your fridge). Adults require a relatively large cage of 40-50gal.

Western Hognose Snake
A really get bet snake that stays small. The are easily tamed and take to handling fantastically. Even though they are rear-fanged the venom is not harmful to humans... and they are not prone to bite (even a mad one will just 'mock strike' by bumping you with its snout!). They ussually take well to eating frozen thawed rodents and eat like pigs. Adults only need a 20-30gal cage.

Leopard Gecko
Another friendly and hardy lizard. They tame easily and have a super endearing face! Usually don't require more then a 20gal cage. They feed on insects, but you can by pe-killed canned crickets and mealworms or specialty gecko food for them. Also are great eaters.

Crested Gecko
Up and coming gecko that has become very popular in the pet trade recently. They tame well and have charming little faces! They do require a more topical set-up with climbing though, but don't need a huge cage. They can also feed on a special crested gecko diet so you don't have to buy live bugs.

Other good choices:
Ball Pythons. Great pet snakes, but due to their stricter heat/humidity requirements and that they are known to be finicky eaters and get stressed. soooo i didn't put them on the main list.
Common Boas/Hog Island Boas. Boas make really great, really mellow pets... but require a bit more research and have stricter heat and humidity requirements. Some species of boas can get 8-10ft which requires large housing and large food (jumbo rats and/or rabbits).
Woma Pythons. A really great and beautiful python that is unfortunately hard to find and very pricey ($300-$400+). They can rage from 5-7ft. Young ones can be bitey and some never grow out of it. But a mellow one is a fantastic pet that doesn't get to be a monster size.
Savannah Monitor/Tegu Both can make great pets, but can get about 5ft and require a very large cage. As they get older they get tame and lazy (with regular handling and care). They seem to enjoy human interaction and are very smart as you can potty train them. Beware! An accidental bite from a hungry one can leave you in stitches.
Lacerta. Another very hardy fun lizard... but they don't seem to readily available. Males are known for their brilliant green and blueish markings. They do well in captivity and don't mind being handled. also insect eaters.

Bad Choices.
Leave these to more experienced or advanced reptile keepers. Many of these end up in bad health do to lack of proper care (which people underestimate), and/or they get large, and/or aggression. They often times end up in shelters or exotic rescues.

Iguanas. Yes really. The common (and often inexpensive) green iguana is not the best choice for a first timer. The require good heat, humidity, lots of climbing as they are arboreal, and a cage the size of a small walk-in closet. These guys are primarily vegetarians and thrive on a variety of fruits and veggies.
Many suffer in captivity do to their easy accessibility but lack of proper care. Negligent owners leave them in an improper cage with only crickets to eat... as a result they suffer from depression, bone deformations, malnutrition, dehydration, and may get aggressive.
Burmese/Reticulated Pythons. Despite being fantastic pets... they grow to an enormous size and aren't always cared for properly... so they often end up in recuses or shelters. A new reptile owner might be overwhelmed by these large snakes growth rate and price of keeping. Are you ready to spend $800-$1000+ on the pythons housing? Plus $5-$10 every week for feeding ONE SNAKE?
Tokay Gecko. They are another reptile usually available relativity cheap. They are known for being one of the most aggressive species of geckos. They are pretty, but don't handle well.
Venomous species. Rattlesnakes, cobras, copperheads, mambas... Do i really need to say anything?

Always make sure to DO YOUR RESEARCH before you buy any animal! That animal is dependent on you for care whether that be food, housing, or a trip to the vet. Expect to take care of that animal its whole life!
Always make sure you know what you getting into!

Great post Sizzy. :)

I'm not sure I'd recommend a Tegu or Monitor to a beginner though, the same way I wouldn't recommend a wolfhound or Great Dane to first time dog owner!

He opened both of his eyes! Thank goodness for the eyedrop. It's almost as if he wasn't infected at all.

I changed the water again today.

I'm going to keep the snails and the seed shrimps. The turtle seems to be doing fine with them so far.

Thanks for the suggestions, SizzyBubbles and  ディロフォサウルス.
And thanks for the list, SizzyBubbles.

Thats why i put them in the "other" category. Note, i do not say all monitors (i would never recommend a water monitor or crocodile monitor!) They make great very rewarding pets from my experience... but require a bit more work and research. If any thing they make a good second reptile.
Having been around a great dane... i would but them more on par to a retic python or water monitor.

I don't know how much that translates to USD, but they are about $150-$200 for an adult and about $100 for babies here. The price goes up if its an uncommon species or color morph. Looks like a normal northern blue tongue from i can tell.

I'm a bit of a fan of the Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentine) not only because it's an Ontario species and is the largest freshwater turtle in Canada but I've actually had a chance to study them in college, in particular I dissected one to learn it's anatomy during Vertebrate Biology class (was donated by some road-kill trauma centre). Also found one alive in the wild on the lake shore as a kid.

Interesting fact. Ontario only has one native species of lizard, the Five-lined Skink (endangered or species of concern, depending on which conservation act you read).

I have always been interested in Marine Iguanas which are only found on the Galápagos Islands.

(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F4.bp.blogspot.com%2F-FRDjnCJoBWE%2FTkvjJnsgLYI%2FAAAAAAAAAqo%2FrJF85cMg7wg%2Fs640%2FMarine%252BIguana1.jpg&hash=584fff54d6864097cd49fd60fe6247e9012006a9)

On the follwing picture notice the bumps on its head...

(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fonemoregeneration.org%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2011%2F07%2FOMG-Trivia-07-09-11.jpg&hash=9f77f3ff9553a8b449fe15d2e395ef1ee0172b0e)

During the mating season, iguana males fight a lot with each other and often 'bump heads'. Thus, one could view them as some form of 'antler', a weapon that helps during fights.

They also have bigger and sharper claws compared to other Iguanas.

Really cool reptile one of my favs :)

The other day I was crossing the road to get something from the shops and saw a bluetongue crawling along. I stood by him and waited until he made it safely into a drain before moving on so nobody ran him over. Before I walked away he poked his head out of the drain and flicked his tongue out and it was like he was waving a "thank you".

I love them! The are supper chubchub and can make great pets (like bearded dragons). They are almost 100% herbivorous too... so you dont have to keep live crickets and worms around! They are hard to find and usually $100 or more depending on the type.

Depends on what kind... Egyptian uromastyx get the largest getting around 2 1/2 feet. Mali uromastyx are a little larger then half that size i think(?). The Mali are the way to go cuz they are a reasonable size and are considered best type of uro to keep in captivity. So i would recommend a mali over the larger Egyptian.
Plus, since they are roamers... space is key. The larger the lizard, the larger the cage. Mali would need a 4ft cage while a Egyptian would need a 6ft one.

I've always been fascinated with monitor lizards. They are big, intelligent (for reptiles anyway) and remind you of a prehistoric beast. The Komodo Dragon, the world's largest lizard, is a monitor lizard after-all. Sadly, I am responsible enough to know I can't own one. I just don't have the time and space at home to look after such a big creature. They have particular requirements in diet, temeprature and living space to ensure they live healthy lives. And I just don't have that.

Still, I remain fascinated with these lizards. I know in the US, some keep Nile Monitors, although I am told they actually aren't ideal pets for first time reptile owners. They are aggressive and somewhat unpredictable in temperament, hard to tame and skittish at best. That's partly down to their African environment, having to share it with many larger predators, like lions, hyenas and nile crocodiles, they have to be "mean" to survive.

Whereas the Asian Water Monitor, found in Southeast Asia, despite being even larger than the Nile Monitors, are somewhat easier to tame, as they are known to be more docile and calm in disposition. Still, they are predators with a carnivore diet and won't hesitate to target any would-be prey, like snakes:
