'The Matrix' apparently copied entire scenes, frame for frame, from certain Japanese animations, but I remember one of the people behind those cartoons being interviewed abut it and saying he honestly didn't care, because so long as something is emulated well or even surpases the original material it's being based upon, it doesn't matter.

I'd say that's the case here. I realised a long time ago that 'Robocop' doesn't really have much going for it, outside of the then-impressive special effects (a lot like the same director's later 'Starship Troopers') and, while 'Short Circuit' was a lot better in terms of characterisation, it would need modifying if it were released today (and it doesn't help that it actually started out as a serious action-thriller about rogue AI, only to be turned into a comedy later on).

That's why I'm happy to add 'Chappie' to films which stand up perfectly fine on their own. It's got its flaws, but they don't detract from the story and there aren't nearly as many of them as some people made out when it had been released.

Wait what??!!

But it does distract from the 'story', because the story is Robocop and Short Circuit melded together lol! That's all I could think of for half the flick! its so painfully obvious.
Wut? When I saw the trailer for the first time Short Circuit did come to mind. While watching it? Neither of those movies came to mind except briefly for Robocop, but that was because Blomkamp designed Jackmans robot to look like the one from Robocop as an homage. Then it went away.

Dude, it rips-off Robocop and Short Circuit like no ones business. It even had ED-209 in it lol!

Yes, it takes story elements used in those movies but were those two movies the first movies that had 2 people competing or a created being that runs around learning?

Cause im pretty sure they are not.

Frankenstein quickly pops into my head when it comes to stories about created beings messing about.
The thing that Chappie has in common with Short Circuit is that they are both robots and they were used by thieves, and that's it. Cause Johny 5 kept running around screaming about being alive while Chappie was way past that as he figured out how to continue on by himself.

I cant think of a competing movie but that plot exist. Tron?

I liked Chappie a lot. Even if people think it's a RoboCop rip-off, that's not enough for me to not like it. What isn't a rip-off of something else these days?

Special effects nothing; Robocop was Robot-Jesus. Chappie on the other hand was outright boring and had no likable characters.

Wait what??!!

You heard. ;)

I honestly don't rate 'Robocop' all that highly. People were wowed by the special effects, not so much the story or characters.

Superficially so, sure. We could also throw 'Real Steel' in there, too (and not just because of sharing an actor). Maybe a bit of 'Saturn 3'.

Ultimately, it works as its own thing, just as 'Alien' has. Not perfect, but decently entertaining.

Do you ever enjoy any movies ever or do you just revel in constantly poo-pooing stuff?

Hey I'm just telling it like it is, if you liked it then fine. I thought it was a rehashed idea that, admittedly, looked good visually, but that's it.

And honesty, not often, most modern movies are poor to average, soulless. I've been having much more enjoyment watching older flicks, if you've seen any of my retros ;) Even the average ones are still fun.

And Aliens rips off Alien like no one's business. Which in turn rips off Planet of the Vampires. So what? CHAPPiE was different enough for me not to care.

CHAPPiE (2014)

I would say this was an ambitious project...but its not really, its just using other peoples idea basically, almost a remake of two franchises spliced together. Ultimately its kinda flawed, looks good, but at the same time dull and depressing really. Still not overly sure where Yoland got the time to get her own Chappie t-shirt printed up, but she did, and she wears it during the finale.

5/10

It's not a remake of two franchises, it uses elements from those but what movie doesnt borrow something from somewhere?

Chappie was a story about what it means to be human.
But people were just focused on everything else and were not paying attention to what Chappie was actually saying.

Not saying the movie was perfect, there is obviously some silly missteps but most folks just scream Robocop and Short Circuit ignoring the story that was happening.
