Whatever issues people may have had with the premise, I'm sure we would have seen some awesome sci-fi hardware in this film.
I posted some Alien 3 concept art from Ellingson in the "Best non-alien pictures" thread as well.

Agreed. To be honest, I would have been very curious to see what Blomkamp's idea was
before he had his talk with Sigourney that resulted in this morphing into an alternate Alien 3.
Why does it have wheels?

Why wouldn't it? Most aircraft, including vertical take-offs, have wheels.
'Cos drop ships are spaceships based on helicopters.
Looks a bit hokey to be honest. An original design would've been better.
I love seeing stuff like this, Wasn't there something similar in ACM that was carrying the queen and got knocked down by the marines?
They still continue to tease.

It seems that you find fault with this only because you are not happy to see something new about Alien 5. ???:)
Thanks for explaining why I find fault.
I mean I could've done it myself and- oh wait. I did.
I like the cargo variants but I second the misgivings about the wheels.
It's likely just a case of taking something modern and incorporating it, but it's just not seeming right. Like the rails in the Pulse Rifle.
Neil Blomkamp's Alien 5 will finally reborn and for the screen.

Helicopters have wheels too.
Hi. Is there a director to work on alien 5 ? Ripley brought something on earth with Call ....
The very end of earth .....
Still upset we got the Ridley prequel garbage instead of this.

Why does it have wheels?
In order to reverse over the container when doing a pickup aboard a ship.
It can also just trundle away after dropping off a crate, instead of having to take off again.

Virtually all military helicopters have wheels.
This looks so awesome. I hope this movie gets made!

Still would love to see this get made.
Its too bad Terminator: Dark Fate did so so badly.
The red carpet tease by Cameron hinting at trying to get this jump-started would have way more weight if Terminator had done well with his involvement. I could see Disney being like, "Well, if he could re-ignite Terminator, he can help re-ignite Aliens."
I don't see this ever being made, but a man can hope.

I made the connection as well, yeah that game did have some larger cargo dropships in it.

Hueys don't.
Either way, the design is derivative and the wheels just look clunky and tacked on. If this was a starting point to something new - great. But I don't care for it as a final design.

Apaches do which is the helicopter Cameron based his dropship design on.

Helicopter Skycranes all have wheels as well which Ellingson's design is based on:

And no problem with that, I'm just saying it's a sound design that could actually work in a real-world scenario. We all have different aesthetic preferences, some will like it, some won't.
It's cool.
i like the concept but some of the details don't ring true.
As a "variant" you can't be swapping the landing strut arrangement around. The original had two in front and one in rear, this one has one in front and two in rear. That would require a major redesign of the load bearing airframe inside, something beyond a "variant."
Also the vectored thrust jets poke out from strange places now. Although the ones in the back look OK. (Presumably to lift the weight of the cargo).
As for wheels? Look authentic to me.

State Of The Bad-Ass Art!!FOX show face&greenlight Both Neill&Ridley!!!!!!!!
So Sulaco was Conestoga Class Battle Wagon&Dropship's were Cheyenne???
Hoping that maybe ... just maybe this gets the Dark Horse 'Unproduced screenplay' treatment too
Hoping this just gets plain old filmed.
Disgusting wheels, for reasons that have already been stated.

Well Blackhawks, Apaches, Chinooks, Merlins, and Sea Knights all have wheels, and I want to say more military helicopters today have wheels vs skids, so it makes sense.
I do prefer the skids look from the original though, if it aint broke don't fix it.

f it aint broke don't fix it.
This is the key here. Same as putting modern sights on a pulse rifle, it's likely going to be more effective to the imagined user but just looks like ass.

Rolling take-offs. It acts like a Harrier and F-35. It allows them to carry more weight than pure VTOL allows for, meaning not as much fuel is used up for taking off. It's why neither of those planes are usually shown taking off vertically.
That would actually have more obvious benefits for a cargo transport than the typical armed version, which might need to carrier heavier loads than a single armoured vehicle.
