I could totally have seen that first Deacon-esque one propped up in David's lab as one of his "in-between" stages.

The way I see it, the Deacon and the Neomorphs are essentially variations on the same concept anyways. Predecessors of the Alien derived from the pathogen without much (any, really) intervention from David.

Makes total sense. The Deacon is a neomorph spawned from an engineer. The mural also depicts a Neomorph in my belief.
