Being in two Alex Garland projects instantly qualifies her as an Alien lead lol. I imagine she'll do an awesome job.

I just hope she's not playing a grown up Newt like someone I know guessed. Don't put that evil out there.

Aye, I loved Devs (didn't even realize that was her in Devs until your post!) and can't wait for Civil War.

On a similar note – Garland would be a very solid choice for an Alien film. Men really doubled down on that for me.

For what it's worth, when the film was originally announced Steve Asbell highlighted that it would be centered around new characters.

Given that she's currently filming Priscilla....

Pre-production definitely seems to be well underway, though, if we're too infer from Dane Hallett's post that he is indeed currently working on this project. But I'd definitely say PO was off the mark about production having already kicked off in secret, which always seemed like a very big stretch.

Garland would be perfect, and has opted to take a break from directing and choosing to focus on writing so it wouldn't be out of the question he'd at least write one.

We know PO have been talking to Fede since Alien Day at least, so I suspect he's told them bits on the down-low. I've been trying to find out more myself over the last few months and I'm hearing that Alien is in Budapest at least (not confirmed that it is shooting) but I'm also hearing from someone else I really trust they're still casting and filming is early next year.

Could they have been doing second unit or creature stuff? Or just scenes not involving the primary cast/characters? I have a slight idea who Spaeny could be playing, it's not Newt.

"Reboot" is such a loose term that it could mean literally anything. A remake is a reboot, a new take on material is a reboot, a 'return to form' that skews closer to an older take on the material is a reboot, bringing in a new filmmaker/cast is a reboot, bringing back an old filmmaker/cast is a reboot, etc. etc.

The word "Reboot," when applied to franchise filmmaking, really has no consistent meaning at this point beyond just "Here's a new movie that isn't just a straight up sequel to the previous one."

Thats totally true, so much stuff that has been advertised as a reboot has turned out to be a legacy sequel or some nonsense like that. When the movie was announced it was called "standalone" tho, I guess this is sort of a further indication of that thats the case.

Is it still made for Hulu? There's nothing in the news articles and I suspect that Prey's success (and Smile going theatrical and making a lot of money) might have changed 20th/Disney's plans.

Reboot, by the way, just means that it is part of the franchise but not a direct sequel to any of the existing movies.
Title: Re: Cailee Spaeny in Talks to Star in Fede Alvarez Alien Film!
Post by: Nightmare Asylum on Nov 17, 2022, 02:48:40 PM
As far as we're aware, nothing has been stated saying that this isn't a Hulu release, so I'd imagine that it being set for a debut on Hulu is still the case.

I guess things could eventually change – the new Evil Dead and Magic Mike movies were shot for HBO Max but have gotten the promotion to theatrical releases (due to all of the internal shakeups at Warner Bros, seemingly), but there hasn't been anything in this particular instance to point towards Disney/20th making that decision here, as much as I would love for them to.

If true, this is obviously riffing on Romulus founding Rome (and likely the Romulus/Remus myth which Raised By Wolves was also playing with a lot). It definitely feels like an appropriate title in the wake of Prometheus and Covenant...

Lots of Roman-influenced architecture on the Engineer world in Covenant, too.

More stuff from that DanielRPK source, I guess (though I can't find the root of his report):

https://twitter.com/3CFilmss/status/1593374044987990016

Doing something a bit more 'basic' is something I was expecting here, since the show seems to be going all-out with the more expansive mythology. Though with a title (be it a working title or final title) like Romulus, I have to imagine there are some larger, more mythic implications at least running in the undercurrent. Maybe it is an Engineer world they're on?

And presumably, as was the case in Prometheus and Covenant before it, I'd imagine that Romulus is likely also the name of the ship (or perhaps, the planet?) in the film, just to neatly pull something in-world into the title on top of the more mythic/allegorical allusions that come with it.

QuoteMost of DanielRPK's stuff is behind a paywall on Patreon, which is totally fine. We've all got to make a living. But if you're going to charge for inside information, then you should probably have a better batting average than he does. Even if Richtman labels his information as a "rumor," the attached price tag puts it under a bit more scrutiny.

Most of DanielRPK's correct predictions (that we can find) appear to be trailer release dates and title reveals as opposed to plot/casting exclusives. Also, a good deal of his information gets leaked or is personally revealed by Daniel on his Twitter account.

It should be noted that DanielRPK occasionally deletes some of his inaccurate claims, which is both weak and embarrassing.

I would be very interested/curious if this pans out (and kind of hope it does) but, given the WGTC connection, I'm not going to put any immediate stock in it at the moment then.

For whatever it is worth, the Sneider guy mentioned the "Romulus" name during his stream last night when saying he didn't have any new news to announce about the film, though that might very well just be because he saw the title floating around online before he went live and not a sign of it actually being true (since he doesn't seem like the most, erm, respectable guy in the industry either).

Reminds me of the time we were covering the making of "Alien: Covenant" before filming started. It was still called "Alien: Paradise Lost" back then. Then we heard from a casting agency that they were going to film it in Rome. Hicks even had it on the main news page.

It was only upon closer investigation that I discovered that somehow they'd gotten their info mixed up with a bookstore called "Paradise Lost" located in Rome, Georgia, USA.

One of the Covenant writers might have seen all the Rome speculation on here because we ended up with David's "when in Rome" line in Covenant.

I didn't know who the actor was playing the teenage boy in Devs; then I found out he was a she. Needless to say, Spaeny did a superb job. But for an Alien role she was probably cast more for her performance in Pacific Rim Uprising (spunky, kick-ass adolescent female). I think she'll do well.

Agreed. Seems like that's a reasonable shout she's actually attached now!

Wow! that's almost historical. I mean, no actress from the recent Alien movies had expressed an interest in Giger's art.

It isn't up anymore, but I guess yesterday Spaeny shared this image to her Instagram story:

Having now seen Priscilla, I can attest that Cailee Spaeny is so good in it.

Yeah, seeing lots of buzz about her this weekend after the premiere of Priscilla. I think she's gonna be able to carry the movie just fine, and a lot of the worries folks have about her being too young will be a thing of the past. Hopefully...

She plays about a decade of Priscilla Presley's life in Priscilla, ranging from very young (roughly 15) to around Spaeny's current actual age at 25, and slips into both (and everything in between) very well. I feel like Romulus could really go either way, where she should be able to play very young or mid-twenties equally well, depending on what the film is calling for from her.

Hey now, what real ones really know her from prior to Priscilla is Alex Garland's Devs! ;)

Spoiler
And, unfortunately, the Pacific Rim sequel that shall not be named or ever acknowledged again. :-X

She's actually set to be in Garland's upcoming Civil War, which I'm quite excited for as well.

Bumping this again after seeing Civil War tonight (got a lot to say about that one which I absolutely will when I'm less exhausted than I am now), but just to add to the thread here – Spaeny continues to really prove herself as the real deal. She is excellent. Can't wait to see her in Romulus, and can't wait to see where her career takes her beyond this.

I only saw her in Pacific Rim and Bad Times A The El Royale. Thought she was good in both.

I watched it last night as well and she is fantastic. Between this & Priscilla I am so excited for her to lead Romulus. She will be someone we talk about for the next several years.
