The farther in the future the better. AVP has had it, and the farther you set it in the future, the easier it could be to actually get something unique instead of the same rehashed things over and over.

While thinking about this I have to be honest, there's have to come a point where the alien and predator both would simply be absolutely no threat to humans. The alien as it is in the movies; is a beast. The Predator appears to have hit an evolutionary dead end if we are to take literal that they are tribe like hunters with technology. Eventually humanity will superseded them both on the food chain. We're f**king evil. If the threat is made public, I'd give it decades with current in universe technology. Say 50 - 100 years and both alien and predator would be nothing more than another bug hunt. Of course a boat full of truckers are still right f**ked.
You are entitled to like what you like, but you pretty much summed up everything I despise about what AVP has become. Part of what got me into both Alien and Predator was that humanity has met its match, which is a stark contrast to more popular sci-fi like Star Wars or Star Trek where humanity is depicted as special and is the "bigger threat" because "we're humans we're awesome and unstoppable!" Looks like HP Lovecraft is the only avenue now to get the "humanity is nothing" theme.
All AVP is now is Predators teaming up with humans to stop the "bigger threat" of the Aliens or humans being the "biggest threat" mainly in the form of some corporation hoping to weaponize Aliens. Oh I almost forgot, some rogue clan of "Super Predators" that is not shown to be "super" in anyway except a trite depiction of beating a "normal" Predator. I can't stand Predator tech scaling (or lack thereof) after all this time or the idea that they aren't evolving. Part of what made Predators so scary was that they were ahead of you intellectually/technologically yet we hardly see any new upgrades in their tech, I guess creativity is hard to come by nowadays. As horrible as The Predator was at least it gave some new tech ideas for Predators, which is desperately needed. For example, that "Pred killer" could be the Predator's version of an Exosuit.
We don't need "bigger and badder" Predators. Just deck them out in cool tech. The work is already cut out for you. You have a technologically advanced race. The sky is the limit with what you can do instead of just making everything "bigger." Now Predators seem to be shown as the lesser threat to the Aliens which is against the core principle of AVP. The Predators are supposed to be as big of a threat as the Aliens, maybe even more so if they actually had creative writers scaling their tech. I see a lot of complaining about Aliens being weakened, but at least they aren't being in the trend of being upstaged by a "super" Alien in a haphazard attempt to try to make them scary.
Kind of a side rant but it ties in with what I am saying. The further in the future you go, the more original you can be in a stagnant expanded universe of recycled cliches. Hell, a creative writer could make their own universe in the far future that could have almost none of the typical Alien universe elements. It might even evolve into its own "distant future" universe of AVP. I actually would really like to see that. A nice break from the evil corporation/"super" predators/human-pred alliance formula. Showing humans and Preds advancing would also give them more depth as well.
