Still no information? I would get a 4k TV for this.

No news at all. Everybody is really slow at releasing old movies in 4k.

I'd have thought they'd release Avatar before them. That'd look amazing in HDR.

So the only movies in the series that are 4k are Prometheus and Alien: Covenant?

Ive just recently upgraded to a UHD 4KTV and Xbox one X mostly for gaming. But I defo would re-buy another version of Alien and Aliens to play on my new 4KTV if they do decide to release a 4K version of them films.

At the moment I own Prometheus on Blu-ray 3D but I will probably wait for the 4K version when I see it cheap. I don't really care enough to buy Alien Covenant on 4K at the moment. But will probably pick it up eventually when I see it dirt cheap in the bargain bin in the near or distant future.

One thing that's pissing me off with 4K at the moment? is it's hard to find a film that has all 4K UHD, Blu-Ray 3D and normal Blu-ray in one case. It's like if you want both a 4K version and a 3D Blu-ray version off the same film you have to buy them separately from shops like HMV or supermarkets. I've seen a few that support all formats in one case when shopping online, but with a stupid price tag. This shit needs to stop.

One more thing about 3D.. i just recently watched T2:3D and the 3D conversion was pretty dam good so I hope Cameron gets round to making Aliens in 3D, cos i would also buy that in a heart beat since my TV also support Blu-ray 3D.

That seems to be much more common in America. You buy one version and you'll get it on lots of different formats whereas in the UK, you buy them separately. Makes sense to me. No point getting multiple versions if you only want the best version.

He did say he'd look at Aliens next if the Terminator 2 3D conversion when down well.

Darkness It's just frustrating at the moment if you want both 4K and 3D in the same boxset. When Blu-ray 3D was big around say 2013 you could pay a tiny bit more and get the boxset with the 3D version as well as the normal Blu-ray and a Digital Copy and in some cases even a DVD disc... But these days, they only like to bundle the 4k disc without a 3D disc. :( The 4K format is basically ultra HD on a Blu-ray advanced disc, so they should stop being greedy bastards and support all formats with a reasonable price tag, and not make it were you have to buy them separately and pay double the price just to own that film.

An example.. I wanted to buy "War of the Planets for the Apes" in 4K and i was hoping it also came with the 3D version. But you could only get the 4K with the regular Blu-ray disc in most shops. However when looking online the was a version that had 4K, 3D, Bluray but it was like £40+ to buy.

The problem I'm having, is I want the best version which is obviously 4K but I also want the 3D version since I like 3D, however I don't want to pay double the price for the same film. So I have decided at the moment I will only buy 4K films that were not made in 3D. However any films that were shot in 3D I'm just going to buy the 3D version that comes also with the regular 2D Blu-ray disc.

I understand that most people don't need multiple versions of the same film. But seriously to print one's and zero's onto a blank disc must cost the manufacturers pennies compared to say years ago when different formats like vinyl, Laserdisc, Tape's  and VHS existed. Just pure greed no wonder people like the pirate.

Hicks
Defo hope T2:3D done well enough for us to get Aliens in 3D. Cos when I watch T2 in 3D it was like watching it for the first time in ages. I really enjoyed it.

Post by: Darkness on Feb 24, 2018, 07:16:36 AM
It's probably down to licensing and royalties. It'd just push the prices up for everyone if they included other formats so it's not as simple as just printing another disc. I hate to say it but 3D is as dead as the dodo and you're a very small minority who is still interested in it. It's hard for me to compare as I refuse to watch anything in 3D but I definitely say 4K an HDR do make a big difference if you have the right TV.

In one interview for Covenant Ridley mentioned that Alien will be released in 4K. I'm 100% but unfortunately I cannot find that video. There are some many.

I have no interest in 3D and certainly wouldn't want to watch something that's been converted to 3D, that originally wasn't presented that way.

4K only for me. I'm sure they have something planned for ALIEN's 40th anniversary.

I would only need the first two films in 4K. I'll still keep all the past DVD and Blu-ray releases in my collection for their supplemental features.

If I had to guess, a six movie (maybe seven, if the third prequel happens and is included?) 4K "Anthology" type set will happen in a couple years time. I wouldn't expect individual releases to follow until a couple years after that.

It'll likely be packaged with the current Blu-Ray.

Aliens on Blu-ray is likely the best we're going to get judging from JC's track record,
it'll probably be exactly the same colour timing etc in 4K.
He could surprise us and release a wax sculpture mess with digital transformations.
(Judgment Day 4K)

A3 is anyone's guess, I'd want a new intermediate cut with fixed compositing.
(More on the side of the Assembly Cut, trim some of the fat.)
Keep AC opening, Ox, "Raise his servants to redemption." , Golic releasing the beast;
& remove the egg shot.
More complex than that obviously, but that's the basics of it.

Perhaps one day they'll release a version of Alien 3 that gives viewers the ability to choose their preferred scenes from both versions and combine them into a viewer preferred cut.

What else is special about 2019? It's none other than Alien's 40th Anniversary in May so all signs are pointing to Alien Day for its official 4K release. Other Alien 4K listings include Lenticular, 3D, Steelbook versions and an "Alien Maniacs" Collector's Box including all the different versions of it. You can see the various artwork below

Oh I don't know (as to might not be beneficial), there's still room for improvement and there's never been an HDR grade before. I think it can definitely get even better.

For example as good as it was, there was still a bit of black crush (very important for a film like this) going on with the blu-ray version. Most people probably don't even remember HD VHS because it lasted all of five minutes, but being on tape it had less compression and there was more shadow information than the blu. I'm sure you can find it out there if you're interested.

I'm sure they did put in a lot of work but it suffered a touch in the final transfer or encode.

Hi, techman here again.

I read wrong. I thought it is all 4 movies as uhd. That would be impossible because all of the CGI was very likely done as the resolution that the movietheaters showed at that time. Usually it is cropped to full hd and bars added.

Therefore you cant have alien3 or 4 as 4k because all digital effects would have to be made from scratch with 4k models and so forth even if the original negatives of the movie would exist and could be scanned to digital version as 4k.

I didnt reat enough to see that it is only alien 1 that is now 4k so that actually is possible as 4k if they take the whole data that the negatives recorded back at the day.
Title: Re: Alien Haunts 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray on Alien Day 2019
Post by: tech man on Jan 16, 2019, 07:28:35 AM
Actually alien 3 and 4 could be made 4k too because cgi is so limited in alien 3. Alien 2 has no cgi. Alien 4 cgi would need to be done by professionals who would have to use the cgi models from original resurrection and then make them higher resolution and have them walk all the same way etc, Would really need top professionals. There wasnt much cgi in resurrection, the swimming scene and some other but they basically could be done too.

Post by: SiL on Jan 16, 2019, 11:43:36 AM
Again, no -- Resurrection was shot and released on film. They'd just take 4K scans of the 35 mm film prints. Jurassic Park is 4 years older and they didn't have to redo the CGI for the 4K release. The CGI might look worse, but there's no reason to redo it.

Something like Predators will be a bit screwed because they filmed in Full HD digital.

lol AVP will never get a 4K Release.

If the format eventually becomes the standard versus a niche market, or if we ever get another AVP film or television series, I think there's definitely a 4K AVP release in our future.

It will become the standard, so it probably will-
but I reckon they won't invest the money to scan
the original negative, if it even still exists to scan.
.
Upscaled Blu-Ray, if anything.

Sorry for just stopping by to flame around, BUT that cover art is a pure insult! What idiot approved that? 40 freaking years anniversary and they use an half ass photoshopped picture of the SideShow legendary bust (was never movie accurate in the first place) and than add a wrong tail that is even poorly posed and totally out of proportion to the head?

That shows how much they appreciate that franchise.

They didn't do much better for the 20th:

They just need to re-present the original poster art in a stylish way. So iconic, and a lot of the kids today have probably never even seen it!  >:(

Said as much earlier. Spot on! It's a perfect poster. Mysterious, beautiful and creepy ... and also doesn't reveal the Xenomorph.

I read once about a market study where they learned that people are more likely to buy/see a movie if there's a big picture of the 'star' on the cover. As a result, the art of the movie poster is now lost to history...  :-[

That's the thing, isn't it? So successful, yet so... disposable. I'm a big home 3D enthusiast, and I've bought movies I've never even seen before because I've read that the 3D transfer is really good. So of course I have to have Avatar, right? Yet every time I think about buying it, I'm like, "Nah, I don't have $30 for that right now."

Meanwhile, I'm thinking about upgrading to 4K for Alien alone...

The difference from 4K to 8K will be so minimal, and so few films will actually benefit from it that I don't see it becoming a large format. Some films don't have the possibility for beyond 2K resolution, most don't have the possibility for beyond 4K.

Avatar is one of those movies that I just seem to pass over . I have it on DVD , but I've yet to make the move towards Blu-ray with it. I definitely feel that its reputation is a bit overblown . The last time I watched it, it just seemed stretched far too thin . I just can't rationalize spending nearly $30 on that movie . If I can find it cheap on Black Friday, I may pick it up one day in the future.

As for 4K , I don't know if I'm ready to make that kind of commitment . I only switched exclusively to Blu-ray two years ago , and I am more than satisfied with the quality of the Blu-ray format . I can't justify spending $30 on movies that have been out for 30 years, and that I already have in a high definition format with Master audio .

I've read too many reviews about movies having to be upscaled for 4K, and colors being oversaturated or washed out . I think regular Blu-ray is just about perfect for me . You watch movies like the Martian or Prometheus , and the quality is just exceptional.

That minimal difference has been hotly debated.

But regardless where one stands, 8K televisions are out there on retail shelves now, and prices are already starting to drop to consumer friendly levels.

You think 4K will be the end of it...?

I have no doubt that there's going to be better transfers, but will the format be better as a whole? I doubt it. Being that there are already 4K transfers that are inferior to the Blu-rays already, or have enough flaws to cause debate; The Fifth Element for example, 8K will be a niche format if at all not an overall improvement as from DVD to Blu-ray, or the majority of Blu-ray to 4K.

I hate to say this sis, but 4K is a niche format. And ironically today, Samsung announced they're pulling out of the 4K blu-ray player market.

Actually it's not nonsense Oldy One but Goody. 4K only holds 5.3% of all disc sales.

And those New Releases are 4K + BLURAY + DIGITAL.  We buy them because that gets the top of the line edition, with often steelbooks and extra goodies. That's why so many of the general public (including me) have 4K discs but no player and never use them.

A few years ago it was 3D + BLURAY + DIGITAL. Most diehard Marvel fans can tell ya that they have 3D discs at home but no 3D player, no 3D tv.

It's not the same, 3D requires specific hardware that you had to go out of your way to use. Compare that to 4K Televisions, which in the UK are no more pricey than that of the HD Standard Televisions, and the same will happen with the 4K Blu-ray players in due time.

4K & 3D are false equivalences.

3D requires a 3D player and 3D Television
4K requires a 4K player and 4K Television

The only thing extra 3D needs is your 3D Glasses.

QuoteCompare that to 4K Televisions, which in the UK are no more pricey than that of the HD Standard Televisions, and the same will happen with the 4K Blu-ray players in due time.

But 8K televisions are dropping in price and will soon be no more pricey too. If you have no skin in the game, and you are shopping for a TV, what will you buy? 4K or the better 8K?  And then would you want 4K or 8K movies to maximize the use of your TV?

Quote4K & 3D are false equivalences.

I was only equating to their niche status, and eventual demise. Samsung pulled out of the 3D player market. Now Samsung pulled out of the 4K player market.

If they saw the futures growing, they wouldn't have pulled out from either. But Samsung sees the writing on the wall unfortunately.

Yes but a 4K Blu-ray and a 4K Player is a general upgrade from a regular Blu-ray and player, in picture and sound- 3D isn't.

8K Films aren't a thing, (On Media) and honestly I'd probably go for the best all round Television, in terms of longevity or picture 4K or 8K.

My PS4 has suddenly started to have difficulty reading blu-ray discs, and the tinfoil hat-wearer in me is wondering if that's a feature, not a bug (i.e. "Gee, discs are such a pain... And then the endless stories of "I paid for this movie, and now it's no longer available?". To say nothing of directors potentially 'special edition-izing' their old films a la George Lucas, and now that's the file that we all have to stream. Gimme my physical discs.  >:(

I've worried about the same things myself. I'm a physical copy man . I like to be able to enjoy my entertainment when and how I want to . There are still portions of the population that do not have access to proper high-speed internet. Nor is the Internet always reliable in bad weather . I'll stick with my discs . They provide the utmost picture quality and sound at all times, regardless of climactic conditions.

As a minimalist, going digital almost seems like a good idea. But the fact is that other people control what you have access to and can take that access away . I don't like to pay for things I might not be able to use two weeks later. And I don't want to be held back from enjoying things unless I pay more for some premium service.

Can't imagine how the picture and audio quality could be better. The Blu-ray is brilliant. Regarding the sequels, there is improvement needed. The Blu-ray of Alien 3 has some scene in which the aspect ratio wasn't right. Some were really stretched. I think especially Alien 3 and 4 need an improvement.

https://alien-archives.com/2019/04/12/alien-40th-anniversary-4k-uhd-review/

"Grain was gone" is not what super 4K enthusiasts would want to hear. They're all about the natural film grain, especially with older movies, arguing it will present the movie the way the director intended to be seen. DNR digital noise reduction is usually considered the most evil of evils. The 4K enthusiast demand for grain is so crazy, that sometimes studios add grain for texture in post to 4K new movies that didn't even use film in the first place, but rather were filmed digitally. Yep they create artificial grain exclusively for the 4K disc.

I've watched "Predator" and "Predator 2" in 4K and the grain was just too much for me in Predator, too distracting. But so many reviewers found the transfer to be exemplary. It's fascinating.

I digress.

Per the link you shared:

"With that said—there are flaws in this presentation. As with the 2010 Blu-ray, there has been some sort of unnecessary, digital grain management applied to the new 4K transfer, which occasionally results in some odd, potentially distracting abnormalities in the film's natural grain field. For the most part this is not very noticeable, and only the most sensitive or hawk-eyed viewers will notice it."

Predator 1987's grain is 100% the original negative and the reviewer majority is correct, it's fantastic.
It's DNR Blu-ray is garbage.

The 'grain-management' of Alien 4K is a lighter version of DNR.

I'm not 100% certain of that. Some of the grain, if I remember correctly, became static and locked into place during the 20th Century Fox logo if I recall correctly. But either way, I found it distracting.

It wasn't filmed in the highest quality to begin with I recall, and while in a dark low-res projected theater screen back in 1987 it looks good, on a super 4k high resolution television screen in 2019 some of the grain was an eyesore in my opinion. The "Predator 2" disc was better fortunately.

QuoteThe 'grain-management' is a version of DNR.

I know. If accurate, the 4K die hards will not be pleased.

Yo sis, what I say. I said so many reviewers found the transfer to be exemplary. And the more grain the better with the die-hards. But sometimes it's too much for me, and for Predator it was too much for me.

I know I'm definitely not the only one. With Predator, Matrix, Close Encounters and more. Go no further than youtube or reddit to find dissenting opinions. I'm not worried if my opinion doesn't align with the 4k enthusiast majority. Cheers.

My post is regarding the Alien 4K transfer.
Geoff D's review;

Spoiler
Quote
Watched the UHD in full last night (Theatrical + 4.1 Audio), it really does look beautiful.
Yes, it has been 'grain managed' to varying degrees and no, this isn't anything to do with "mishandled" or "poorly shot" negatives.
The most overt signs of this treatment are restricted mainly to the examination scene with its smeary frozen grain,
and some of the exteriors of the ship on the planet can look a bit funky.
Apart from those there's a decent enough layer of grain here and there, not sure if it's of the correct vintage but I'll take it.

Detail is terrific, very finely resolved apart from the obvious moments where the focus wasn't nailed back in the day,
as well as a little bit of the usual anamorphic distortion like the softness at the very top and bottom of the frame in some shots.
But given the lenses they used, the likely 5247 stock and that they didn't have an awful lot of light to work with in some scenes,
this was a heroic effort by Derek Vanlint. I always find it funny that older movies shot anamorphic look a good bit sharper
than some modern movies shot on old ana glass, but then Vanlint didn't use much diffusion owing to the slower anamorphic glass
and that he was often running two cameras simultaneously (a Ridley Scott trademark, he'd be operating one and Vanlint the other)
which makes it even more tricky to light it properly for both angles and to hide said lights. Again: this was a heroic effort.

HDR is nicely handled. Certain sources of light are plenty brighter than you've ever seen them but they're not so bright that they distract,
instead it imparts that usual sense of depth and volume to the imagery. Highlight information is newly uncovered all over the place,
unless people are fans of light bulbs then maybe it's not much to get excited about when dealing with something shot entirely on a stage
but even so, it looks so much more naturalistic than the harshly blown out lighting seen on previous transfers.
I LOVED how the strobe lighting looked on Sigourney Weaver's face during the climactic moments,
you can see her expression frozen in place every time the strobe goes off and it comes through with so much clarity now.
(Those bits will of course be uncomfortable to watch if people are sensitive to flashing lights but then they always were.)
And, as with the 4K DCP, you can now see all the spotlights in the Narcissus' engines when Ripley fires them up to expel the Beast at the end.

Black levels are gorgeously dense, after watching the 4K DCP I remarked how much shadow detail seemed to have been soaked up
and now I know it wasn't just that specific cinema presentation. The approach to the blacks reminds of Blade Runner's UHD vs the BD,
in that some shots which had dark crushy blacks on the Alien BD have now been opened up a tad, and shots that had plenty of shadows
on the BD have now been darkened accordingly. Basically there isn't a blanket approach, if this kind of ultra dense black level
had been applied to the whole movie it would have been a bit suffocating IMO. As it is, it's just about perfect.

Colour matches the DCP very well, definitely desaturated vs the previous attempts and a general toning down of the teal menace,
though there's still a subtle green undertone to certain shots here and there. Skin tones look superb, layered and rich,
and those welts on John Hurt's face (look at his lower jaw) when we first see him after he wakes up from being facehugged
seem to be a fair bit angrier.

The transfer still retains a fair bit of 'wobble' during the opening and end credits but that's likely baked in to the original opticals,
the rest of the movie looks rock solid (the DC 'Transmission' scene aside which is very juddery).
Diligent clean-up on the dirt and scratches, the occasional little blip might still sneak through.
Compression is excellent, I've griped a hell of a lot recently (I like griping) about how HEVC + HDR + YCbCr can't handle fire, smoke etc
but this encode takes those notions and flushes them out the nearest airlock as it's pristine, at least to the naked eye.
Perhaps it's precisely because the grain has been managed that the encoding handles it so well?
In any case, I didn't spot any of the usual chroma bugs.

And the movie, OH the movie. I've seen it more times than I can count, saw it again barely five weeks ago,
and it still had me rapt from start to finish. If Ash was a movie fan then he'd love Alien: it's the perfect cinematic organism.

I can deal with the level of noise reduction in predator. There are a few waxy shots, but overall the jungle and everything else looks fantastic.

Aliens really benefited from dnr from what I saw.

I'm really looking forward to experiencing the 4K edition on my new 4K television. Thank God natural colours are back and the (grotesque) teal & orange cast is largely (or completely?) absent, along with the boosted contrast levels.

I'm not a fan of the DC (I do enjoy the additional material), but it also deserves to be (proper 4K) archived, alongside the classic 1979 original. Disappointing that the footage, exclusive to that cut, is upscaled only.

Hoping (praying) for a (complete) 4K edition of ALIENS SE.

Hey guys, the 4K UHD Blu-ray came out 3 days ago in Poland. I saw it with my wife and I believe I published one of the very first professional reviews on the Internet:

https://hdtvpolska.com/obcy-recenzja-wydanie-4k-ultra-hd-blu-ray/

it is written in Polish but if you click on the British flag at the top of the page, you'll get a Google translation.

There are some shots of the box (the front, back inside) there.

Below is also my quick impressions on the Blu-ray dot com forums (in English):

QuoteI just saw the Director's Cut in 4K UHD with my wife (the film came out today in Poland, actually, and I bough the physical copy). I've always preferred it and I'm proud to say that. I also saw Alien 2 years ago in the cinema in its DC albeit its scan looked very poor in comparison to Aliens remastered in 2010 by Cameron...

I gotta say - some scenes looked bit less focused than the others but then again that's the way Alien looked to me in the cinema 2 years ago as well, so I thought it was a matter of lenses / cameras / lighting / original scan that couldn't be completely fixed.

Make no mistake, though, the 4K UHD is a HUGE improvement over the 1080p version, I checked it meticulously myself. There is also a big difference in grain structure - in 4K UHD version it looks really, really small while it is way bigger in the 1080p version. Combined with much lower resolution, all the darker scenes (coupled with steam, fog, mist, etc.) and lots of motion - the HD version looks like crap at times.

It is especially especially noticeable in all the scenes on LV-426, for example when Kane is descending into egg lair. In the 1080p version you'll see macroblocks, and signs of compression. No such thing in 4K UHD.

Alien is already a quintessence of quality cinematography, colorization, lighting and composition, but this 4K UHD release makes it as good as it was possible from its master. Same goes for its sound track. Yes, it's no Atmos but it'd be extremely difficult to pull it off from 4.1 track.

If you have any questions, I'll be more than happy to assist you, guys :)

For the shots that looked out of focus -- they are actually out of focus, and have been since they shot the movie. Sir Ridley Scott even mentions it in the 20th Anniversary Edition commentary; they were rushing so much towards the end that they just had to go with it.

I've only seen the Blu-Ray once so I've not ingrained it in my memory of the movie ;D That said, I don't find the colours on the Blu obnoxious compared to most teal/orange casts; I just love the original look because the 70s cinematography was gorgeous to begin with.

No native 4K "Director's Cut" it's "seamless"  HDR 1080p material upconversion.

Actually what you're saying might seem like a gigantic deal on paper, in reality is almost a non-issue given how little extra material there is in the DC and apart from 2-3 scenes, it's rather small tidbits. And the upscaling was done from a 2K DI so to the naked eye it'd be not noticeable. And trust me, I'm an editor at a AV enthusiast website.

What I'd have liked, though, would be some bonus content from 5th Blu-ray disc from the Anthology boxset.

Nice review. He only gave sound a 6.5 but I'm not a big audiophile anyway. The 8.5 for the picture quality is what I zeroed on.

Plus he was one of the reviewers that dogged Predator's 4k video quality and subsequently got beat up in the comments for it, so my perception seems to align with his.

QuoteSure, you may have various other releases of this absolute juggernaut of cinema, but Alien really has never looked better or more terrifying. So this video is being discussed over there too. Apparently it's completely none representative of the 4K edition and the colours are incorrect. You can see that when comparing to the screen caps from the compare website.

I previously watched DVD versions (one or two times), but after blu-ray don't remember them. So, please tell me - Blue filter in 4K edition is natural color of Alien film or just a filter? It looks strange and unusual.

It indeed looks off, but we can't fully be certain of the color deviations yet by any comparison on YouTube. We all need to see it in person. However, the word is there are some variances in color. It will also be interesting how HDR impacts the color. We'll see.  :)

In a somewhat related note, I've recently watched both Terminator 2 and Predator 2 both in 4K and neither match their theatrical representations anymore. But while the Predator 2 color deviation is slight, more nuanced, T2 is just in-your-face different.

T2 had heavy work done on it. Alien is supposed to be scanned straight from the original negative. The colour difference should be going from post-colour graded full HD scan to uncolour graded 4K film negative scan.

Blade Runner comes to mind. Sir Ridley personally supervised, changed and approved the color timing to his liking. Now this was billed as a different cut, so different circumstances, but Gladiator, Alien, either with subtlety or extensive director's cuts, there is still Scott's apparent desire to improve his classics versus having a let-live-as-is attitude like other directors share.

James Cameron seems to have this desire to improve too. Here's an occasion where Cameron wasn't even truthful about digital alterations he made. https://skynetsarmy.net/2017/05/05/james-cameron-wasnt-completely-forthcoming-about-altering-the-digital-effects-in-terminator-2-judgment-day-3d/

That's why Ridley being involved will always make me nervous, even if no changes ultimately come from it.

Blade Runner's 4K transfer is visually magnificent though. A exemplar of the format.

Judgment Day is a trashfire, no comparison.

Especially after a handful of reviews I've seen, I have little concern over Alien 4k not looking wonderful.

This discussion is just through the prism of will the colors look like its theatrical release.  :)

Thanks for sharing this Drukathi.

This is what I was worried about:

"Every time the original negative of Alien has been scanned for a fresh remaster, the color of the final product has had to be re-graded and approved by Ridley Scott—and each time, Scott has favored the film to have a slightly different look.
"

Now they continue to say the 4K is the closest to the theatrical color yet, but does anyone remember Kane looking so blue here, theatrically?

I didn't like the 2010 Blu-ray release at all. The teal & orange cast, the (excessive) black crush, contrast boost and cropped image, turned me right off.

From what I've seen (screen caps) and read, the new 4K edition will have more natural colours and none of the above issues to hobble the presentation. The 4.1 audio (I believe) is also lossless.

The only disappointment (for me), being the sh*t cover art (both egg and Alien versions).

Very much looking forward to seeing this.

Got my copy early and have just finished. A BIG improvement over the 2010 release - natural colours are back and the teal and orange is gone. The colours are desaturated compared to the 2010 Blu-ray and look much more realistic. Compare the colour of Parker's green cotton shirt between the two releases (the close up shot of him after slamming the incinerator unit down on the table).

The Space Jockey reveal has thankfully been fixed - no neon green spacesuit for Kane - his original tan-coloured suit is back.

Had a look at the DC and am happy with the new colour grading for the DC scenes. The scenes, whilst upscales, don't detract too much from the 4K material either side of it.

All the edits made to the DC are there but not the updated effects - added stars and the three helmet lights, rounding the rock formation during sunrise, are missing - basically the DC without the reworked visual effects. This may qualify as a third version of the DC?

I was hoping the audio would be fixed for the overhead shot of Brett (exclusive to the DC), you can hear his footsteps while still standing motionless, looking around for Jones.

I enjoyed this 40th anniversary edition. A definite step up from the 2010 Anthology release.

I think I preferred the teal/green look of the original transfer but maybe it's because that's what I've been used to all these years. I don't think the HDR makes all that much of a difference because it is supposed to be a dark movie.

I'm not a tech geek (heck I watch torrented movies on a square PC plasma screen from 2007) but I don't get "ultra HD" upgrades of old movies.

Even new cinema movies are still filmed in 24 frames per second so DVD is fine.

The 4K-HD element adds odd movements and frame morphing during films I find. TV is ok but that's because TV is ultra real. Movies need that fantasical haze to differentiate the atmosphere.

...ow, is that a joke?

Ultra HD has nothing to do with frame rate, it's the frame size. The actual size of the image. The films are still 24 frames per second, it's just that they're scanned in a higher resolution digital format.

Yeah, I notice a difference in sharpness and visible detail. Though it's also more dependent on distance from the screen than 1080p is. HDR also makes a difference depending on the quality of the display implementation.

It's not as big of a jump as the one from DVD to Blu-Ray was, but it's still a jump.

Studios rarely ever do that. And why would they? Even if they remastered the 1080p transfer, you're not gaining much of anything. No enhanced resolution, no HDR, The 4K set is for people who have the equipment to view 4K stuff. The addition of the 1080p disc is merely a supplement.

The ALIEN 4K disc has the same bonus features as the single BD release.

If you want ALL the bonus material - including the then fancy early DVD menu screens, then hang onto all the previous releases.

The ALIEN 20th anniversary DVD is still valuable for its raw production audio and alternate music track. As well as the film itself - a brighter image without the black crush and tight cropping, as later editions.

It's subtle. Look at the right and left edges of the frames.

Thanks for sharing Elmazalman. I know it's pretty geeky but I love analyzing the differences with these transfers.

Ah yes, I see it now.

I just had the Legacy dvd up on my projector last night (84" image) and it still looks great compared to the blu-ray, so I might watch that one more often!

Although the 2003 DVD has improved resolution, I prefer the 1999 release. It has better colours and isn't as contrast boosted as the 2003 DVD.

The 1999 DVD does show more image.

I got rid of my Legacy set when the Quadrilogy came out. I really need to get around to rebuying that.

The 20th anniversary DVD is still one of my favourite home releases. One of the best uses of interactive DVD menus.

Having a close look at the main menu screen (when it first starts up), I spotted what looks like a subliminal image, of one of the guy's responsible for the production of the 20th Anniversary DVD (also the ALIEN / ALIENS Laserdisc boxed sets from the early 1990s).

It looks like a subliminal cameo. It's a flash frame of someone with a beard ... you'll have to be quick to spot it.

Likewise. Stupid decision by me.

My former neighbour was an avid VHS collector/resellor. He once invited me over and said take a few of whatever I wanted. Found the old Alien Saga VHS boxset just sitting there. Thank you very much.

I think my brother has the original VHS release of Alien in his collection.
