Title: Fan Reviews
Post by: RazorSlash on Feb 28, 2013, 07:52:40 PM
Even though it's just a simple mobile game, I thought some people would still like to share their thoughts on it. To start off, here are mine.

First off, let me be clear; I was looking forward to this game. I really was. I was more excited for it than I should have been, considering it's just an app. But what I ended up paying $5 for is essentially just that. An app. Because, as much as it pains me to say it, Alien vs Predator: Evolution is just barely a game.

Upon starting the game for the first time, you are only able to select "Play" or "Options". Selecting Play gives you the choice between two species. I chose the Alien, the Xenomorph, personally. You are given a loading screen introducing the first stage of the game: The Queen's Chamber. After that, you tap the screen to start, and a short cutscene plays...
...and in most cases, that's it. Because the game tends to crash here. It finally worked on my third attempt, in which I could finally take control of a Xenomorph. The mission was to protect the Queen from the attacking Super Predators. They cannot be killed by just running up and using a combo, as they attack much faster than you. Your best option is to counter. When you block an attack, the attacker gains a few brief moments of vulnerability, just enough for you to strike. And vice versa, of course. The problem here is that after deflecting an attack from the Predators, the game gets hung up, lags, and doesn't register you tried to attack back, and you end up being tossed around by the Predator worse than the Xenomorphs in AvP:R.

I had to replay this level MANY times, and I still haven't beaten it. And I don't plan to at this point. The game doesn't even have a proper Game Over screen...or maybe it does, honestly I don't know. It crashes whenever I die and I have to load everything back up again. Gameplay wise, this is a mess.

I addressed this game as an app earlier for one reason- the Store and the Customization works perfectly. You can unlock different parts of different Xenomorphs throughout the years, and mix and match the head, body, and tail to create your own customized Xeno. Admittingly, I haven't unlocked anything past a typical drone because...well...read above. But I can still look, and the parts are fairly accurate(aside from maybe the Resurrection Warrior), and are pretty cool looking.

The sound in this game is also pretty decent, and very reminiscent of the old AvP games. But, sadly, this is as far as the positives go.

In short, AVP Evolution is not worth the $5. It's not even worth it for free. It's horribly broken, laggy, and it tends to crash at every opportunity, I've even had it crash while loading the main menu once or twice. Customization would be neat, VERY neat, if I could play the game to even UNLOCK what it offers. As much as it pains me to say this, AVP Evolution, even taking into consideration that it's an app, is worse than Colonial Marines. And I mean that. I mean, CM was bad. Really bad. But atleast it ran properly. Sort of. Evolution feels sloppy and rushed, and I honestly felt like I was playing a rough prototype of a game posing as a finished product, ala Sonic '06.

Again, as much as this pains me, Version 1 of AVP Evolution gets nothing more than a 2/10, and that's ONLY because of customization and sound design.

What device are you using?

5th Gen iPod Touch.

Which can run The Amazing Spider-Man, which has free-roam in an entire, rendered city and graphics that are on the same level as this. There is really no reason it should be doing this.

I was going to download this for my Nexus 7 but now I'm very scared I'm going to be running into these problems which will keep me from being able to play the game.

The game runs fine on my iPad and the first alien level you are suppose to lose. I'm really enjoying it so far worth the 5 bucks the story is good the grapics are good and it does not glitch out I reccomend this game.

From what I've read, the game runs fine on the iPhone 4, iPhone 5, and the iPad, but all other versions lag to shit.

That's just insulting, then. The game crashed literally every time I die  >:(

I'm sorry, but I'm dropping my initial score of v1 from a 2/10 to a 1/10, as it no longer even loads gameplay. Out of the last 10-15 attempts, it crashed at either the loading screen or opening cutscene. This game clearly isn't meant for a lot of the devices it's being sold on. Be hesitant when purchasing.

My only complaint is that the attacks are slow and the character and other than that its great good story and the only reason you die in the first alien level is because the queen is supposed to be taken so the super predators can harvest her eggs.

I've found in order to get them to work you have to start from the opposite edge of the screen and do the up,left or right gesture. The little arrows do make it seem like you should pull it off with just a little flick.

This my review:

So far I am really not liking this game; there are a lot of glitches.  First off, there are some problems syncing achievements unlocked in-game with the Game Center; that is perhaps the most annoying.  The second problem is that the screen sometimes becomes unresponsive so when you are doing a swipe combo to finish an enemy off, the game doesn't register your action and the enemy breaks free of your grab, making the game harder than it was originally intended.  The third problem is that the game crashes somewhat frequently and is really annoying to go back to your last checkpoint especially if getting past enemies is made even more difficult by the aforementioned 2nd problem.

I got the game to run on low detail on my samsung galaxy tab 10.1, I synced my PS3 controller to my device and have been playing i on a controller. Not perfect but still an enjoyable game. I just wished I could run it on higher graphic settings.

Wow this has really surprised me. I knew from what I read that the game would have problems but holy hell this damn thing is so broken I cant even get past the f*cking load screen without it crashing on me. I can't even say how the game is at all because it wont even let me play it, jesus christ. :P

Interesting, but frustrating.

Playing it on an iPad (the 'new' version, which was released between versions 2 and 3) and, thankfully, haven't encountered any moments which break it.

There is a definite lack of spatial awareness, though. Even if you set the camera to automatically turn with you, it doesn't do so immediately. You have to move a certain distance before it starts to move, which forces you to use the hand which should be comfortably rested in position to operate the strike/jump commands, to manually swivel and elevate the camera. Hectic when you're up against more than one target!

Finding out how to deal with enemies carrying shields, where you're told to do a 'heavy attack', is also quite confusing. You're not informed what a 'heavy attack' is classed at and a jump doesn't seem to have any more of an effect than a normal strike does. I tried just sort of randomly pressing hurried combinations of strike and jump and... Something appeared to successfully dislodge the shield, but I'm not sure what it was.

Entire thing looks/plays a lot like Monolith's entry to the AVP games, except completely in third-person. Which, honestly, would be perfectly fine, were it not for the frustration of the camera! You just can't get the degree of control available on mouse/keyboard. The movement is achieved by a virtual stick on the left-hand side and you find your thumb kind of just slipping off the screen when you need to make the character move for an extended period of time, forcing you to 'restart' the movement. In itself, not necessarily bad, but it's causing me to keep getting killed on a level which effectively forces it to change to an almost 2D side-scroller, where you're trying to move the Alien across an expanse of ground, navigating crates, while a dropship's firing at you. In a PC game? Easy enough. Maybe even would've been fun, but it's difficult to do this on the movement system they've set up with any real intuition.

Having said that, it feels kind of fun. Certainly not a waste of money for something this cheap!

A word of warning, though: During moments where you get the option to affect a kill animation of your choice? You have the option to choose an arrow-labelled direction and there's no indication which one you 'should' do, meaning that, sometimes, you'll try one and the enemy who's in your grasp will somehow find the strength to block or force you away. No explanation of what the deciding factor is when this happens.

Have definitely got the impression that if they had released it cheaply for PC, it'd be a lot more casual and entertaining. It's primarily the medium of how they've set it up to play through a mobile device, which makes it more frustrating than intended.

I think a heavy attack is to hold A; you have to do it 3x to break the shield.  Also, you can turn the camera just by swiping the screen.

Angry Mob replied to my e-mail and gave me a solution, that happened to work. It still tends to crash during loading screens, but I can atleast play the levels now.

Will re-do my review later.

EDIT: Review still stands. While I was able to successfully load the first two missions, the third mission now does the same thing the first used to do. Turned my iPod on and off twice and tried loading it around 20-25 times. It gets about halfway, and then just crashes. So, again. Unless you have an iPad or the newest iPhone, don't buy this. It isn't meant to run on any other device, and it shows. I'll have to pick up the rumored Vita version if the Vita ever supports the engine.

Facehugger and Chestburster were...neat, I guess. Never got to play as the adult Xenomorph, unless you count the intro stage. Which I don't, really.

Yeah it's the same thing here. The first two missions were able to play but once I got to the third one it just keeps on crashing at the load screen. I honestly can't believe that a game that's this broken would get released on the iPod touches.

What's the point of releasing it if it's not even letting you get through the loading screens, let alone letting you play the actual game at all. Doesn't matter anyway because unless they decide to fix all this with an update I'm not bothering with this anymore, I'm not even going to even try the Predator campaign.

I downloaded this on my Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1. Works absolutely fine for me. I've played the first 4 or so missions and no crashing issues so far. It looks frigging lovely. Sometimes I forget how advanced these tablets/phones have come. I can see it being more difficult on the phone with the smaller area but works lovely on a tablet.

During their Reddit Q&A, they were asked if they planned to release it on any other handhelds, like the Vita. They responed they the game would be perfect for the Vita, but that the engine it uses does not support it. They went on to say they'd definitely look into it.

I'm having a problem where the thermal vision is completely busted. Switching from normal to "tech" view works but as soon as I try to switch to thermal the screen blurs and essentially becomes a static image until I switch back to normal vision. Seems like a post proc effect is busted. I'm using IPhone 4.

Speaking of thermal vision, I've encountered another bug with that too. In the level where the lights go out, if I turn on thermal vision before it gets dark, the thermal vision will also go dark when the power is cut, as in you can see enemies, but not the environment, it's all a block of blue.

Playing it on my Samsung Tab 2 and barring a few slight framerate drops in some areas, and some minor camera issues in parts, no problems so far- touch wood.

I do like that they did manage to include things like the lifecycle and customizable characters. As mentioned elsewhere, the prices of upgrades are a bit steep unless you are willing to lay down even more money (which I'm not).

My main complaints are that the alien doesn't quite feel like an alien- it just feels too slow and rigid. The controls for both alien and predator could do with being a lot more fluid. At times it felt like the touchscreen wasn't registering my commands. I think this is what spoiled my enjoyment most- it just became frustrating at times trying to guide your character through combat. What's quite strange is that the combat in Predators feels much smoother, so it feels like a step back in Evolution.

Jim Sterling writes for Destructoid and hosts Podtoid, one of the best podcasts ever.

He's also a huge fan of Aliens and the like.

Evidently this game is garbage too :(

I actually was thinking of picking this up, but now...nope! I usually don't have much in the ways of expectations for iOS games of this sort, but at least that Dead Space game worked well given the platform it was on. Frustrating in parts, but it worked.

2013 has been hard on the Aliens series it seems.

Average rating is around 57% at the moment.

I was thinking about buying it - only $5.50 after all (despite it being $4.99 in the USA and us having a stronger dolllar - f**k YOU APPLE!!) - but might wait for some updates.  A few reviews talk about it being buggy.

The destructoid review is godawful, it's chock-full of a bunch of complaints that are outright false. I seriously wonder if he actually played the game or not, because for every negative review I can find like 3 positive ones.

Re destructoid review:
I agree that the gameplay is somewhat repetitive, and there are some graphical glitches.

I personally haven't experienced QTEs and combos not being recognized. Actually, as long as I bothered to time the combos, they came out alright. I didn't think the attacks were slow either. The first attack in a combo is slower than the others, but it's not that bad.

Things I don't agree with:
He says the game isn't balanced, the reason being that executions recharge health and kills enemies quickly, but it can be risky. Given the huge benefits of executions, wouldn't the risk actually balance it out? If it had no risk, wouldn't you become some kind of god-like being? It is frustrating to accidentally start an execution sequence though, but he doesn't touch on that.

He also says the framerate drops during some sequences. But then he specifically says he couldn't chain combos when being surrounded by enemies, which makes me think it's not quite that. Maybe he really does have framerate problems in those sequences, but you're (generally) not supposed to be able to chain combos when being surrounded by enemies because of recoil. When you get hit, your combo gets interrupted and you have to take some time to recover, which means getting boxed in is deadly for your character.

Then he complains some more about getting boxed in. Which raises the question, what is he doing getting boxed in? Considering what he said earlier about "prodding the screen until everything's dead", it sounds like he was too busy button-mashing to avoid getting boxed in. Besides, what do you expect them to do, politely line up and wait their turn?

His complaints actually convince me that this isn't a braindead button-masher.

I can vouch for the Destructoid review, in that I've personally experienced most of what he claims. Except he seems to have actually managed to progress further than me- My game crashes on the loading screen to the next mission. After trying to load it up a couple times each day for about 3 or 4 days, I just gave up and started praying for an update.

I never experienced any crash like you guys, so that is no problem for me. I am using Samsung Galaxy 3.
The real frustrating part is terrible camera angle system and general combat.
I really don't like keeping old tradition of nerfing Predator compared to Movie version. I don't think making Predator as efficient and powerful as movie version won't break gameplay. I am stuck at Predator level after Alien disables power generator. Light is out. I have to use thermal vision to take out a group of marines in dark, yet they can still see me very well despite darkness+cloaking. It is impossible to tell whether I am cloaked or not in thermal mode. It is plain frustrating. And energy depletes too fast considering amount of marines in present. Execution time is too long and stupid since it cancelles cloaking. It is stupid that execution takes too long and other marines kill me while in process. And it is stupid that developers still think keeping cloaking would be overpowered when it is not. Since I am stuck at that level, my review may not be 100% accurate, but when the game gives more frustration than challenge, then there is problem. I don't think the developers even tested their own games. I don't think 3d action translate well into mobile app, especially something like AVP which should be treated far better.

I say 5.5/10. And that's me being generous. I really tried to love this game. I even doubted people giving negative review, but after experience frustration after another, I just can't let my love for franchise cloud my judgement.

Actually normal marines can't generally see you in the dark, only when you're really close (same as when you're cloaked) and I think also when you're doing an execution. Sometimes they also fire without aiming, which might still hit you. However there are 3 cloaked marines that have thermal vision, so they can always see you (even in other levels when you're cloaked), and their shots really hurt. So you don't need cloak for this mission. And if you just really need cloak, try the Wolf set.

And it's pretty normal that you can't tell if you're cloaked or not in thermal vision. After all, thermal vision is supposed to let you see through cloaks.

So I have to upgrade stuff to get through that level? Do I have to earn credit through replaying certain levels? I don't want to spend extra cash on terrible game.
And in other game say Predator Concrete Jungle. You could distinguish the difference in thermal vision. When cloaked, Predator is shown blue, suggesting electric device causes higher temperature.

I just recently bought this game for my Ipad and got about halfway through and now it keeps crashing. I can play the past levels and unlocked missions before level 7 but trying to load that particular mission I can't get the damn thing to stop from falling out. Have to admit I haven't played a lot of the game which is a shame. The controls (Nexus7) scream controller support rather than touch screen as its a solid game just find my thumbs start to move e away from where they need to be when things get heated.

Fingers crossed I get over this and get fully into it as nice detail to the series.
