Post by: Immortan Jonesy on Mar 15, 2016, 07:00:16 PM
QuoteIndiana Jones is swinging back into theaters.

Steven Spielberg will direct Harrison Ford in the untitled fifth installment in the action-adventure franchise, which will open July 19, 2019, Disney announced Tuesday.

"Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can't wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019," said Disney

How much you want to bet Ford will only agree to this if Indy dies at the end?

Seriously, they just need to not do this, Ford is too old, everyone is just gonna have to accept that the guy is too old and the moment has long since past.

Same with Arnie while I'm on it.

Oh, oh I hope the plot is that Indy's hat was magical all along and some nazi politician is on the hunt to get it before Indy's bodacious granddaughter beats him to it. Actually... that sounds friggen awesome. When can we start filming.

^^So is Indy!!  He drank from the cup of Christ, which is how he survived the frig in the mushroom cloud. ;D

They should really call this movie... Indiana Jones and the Reason why Ford agreed to do the Force Awakens, and the gave the middle finger to all star wars fans who waited 30 years to see what happened to Han, Luke, and Leia.   Harrison Ford can go F**k himself.

So it will be 11 years since Crystal Skull came out in 2019. I wonder if this movie will be set in the 60's? Maybe in 1968 or 1969.

Bottom line, had Indy 4 been a good movie, I'd say go for it, but it wasn't, it was crap. So why risk this again with an even older Ford, I don't think Lucas makes any difference really.

Oh come on guys, oldiana could be fun. Indy retires to Bermuda only to get lost in that damn triangle where he finds the alien space craft from the end of Crystal Skull. We can call the Movie Indian Jones 5: Crystal Skull part 2.

Come on guys use your imaginations. A long time ago in a Galaxy far, far, away...

Indiana Jones and The hunt for Luke's Lightsaber!

We could have Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones lightsabering some neo nazi's to bits. It fits all the criteria too. Long lost artifact, magical force properties, nazi armies, adventure, excitement, Han Solo and Indy both crave these things.

Indiana Jones & The Legend Of The Dirty Long Hairs
"A dirty hippie rebel group is planning to steal artifacts from US museums in order to return them to their native countries. Indy has to stop them with help from Cliff Booth."
This will be Dirty Harry's Lethal Weapons or something like that.

Indiana Jones & The Woodstock Wizard
"An ancient evil wizard is performing at Woodstock to turn the audience into his army. Indy has to stop him."
Most of the movie takes place at a festival and Indy will do all kinds of drugs and sex.

Indiana Jones & The Ayahuasca Expedition
"Indy has to battle an evil spirit. In order to do so he has to travel to wherever, drink Ayahuasca, travel to the spirit realm and beat the him on his own turf."
This one will be weird, trippy and won't make sense.

About the statement, I've only seen Phoebe as L3-37 un Solo 🤔

On that note, if I'm not mistaken I'm pretty sure that Jon Kasdan, who co-wrote Solo with his father, is still a credited writer on Indy 5.

Take with a grain of salt, given the source, but:

QuoteAccording to our sources, Mads Mikkelsen will be playing the villain in this new installment of Indiana Jones. His character is described to us as a Nazi scientist enlisted into NASA by the United States government to work on the space agency's moon landing initiative.

Shaunette Renee Wilson will be playing Mads Mikkelsen's villain's CIA handler responsible for "babysitting" the Nazi scientist turned NASA recruit. There will also be a female villain, "an evil and brutal killer" who will work with Mads Mikkelsen's character. According to our sources, Scarlett Johansson actually passed on this role previously.

https://www.theilluminerdi.com/2021/05/20/indiana-jones-5-space-details/

If it's true, color me intrigued. The idea of an Indy adventure with the Space Race as a backdrop is something I'd be all over.

There's also the possibility that the Nazi stuff here could be a flashback. Perhaps a prologue, setting the stage for the 'contemporary' narrative (a la Hellboy)? I'd imagine if there are indeed Nazis running around in the 60s in this movie, they'd probably be a bit more subtle than slapping a swastika on every piece of tech they have.

Unless it's an alternate history timeline in which Germany won but that won't jibe with Crystal Skull. And the cars and trains are all 1940's era tech so most likely a flashback.

Bamburgh castle and that chair might suggest that there is some Celtic mythology or Arthurian legend elements in the story.

Yeah, looks like they are shooting those scenes outside the castle which has been decorated with banners, barbed wire and other WWII elements. So they'll probably do a Jeff Bridges, Tron type head replacement on Harrison.

Is he still insisting on doing his own stunts? He was injured on the set of "The Force Awakens" as well which also forced a halt to production.

So this firmly anchors the film in a 1969 setting for the main portion of its narrative. I wonder if the Moon landing is going to be a core element of the film, or just something that helps to frame the era in which the story is being told? I can absolutely see them riffing on Operation Paperclip, perhaps represented by an (ageless?) WWII-era Nazi Mads Mikkelsen who is still kicking in the late 1960s and has long since infiltrated NASA?

Also, today is Harrison Ford's 79th birthday!

The Scooby gang speculate that the plot involves Indy being instrumental in saving America's moon shot from nefarious insider interference, and that the Glasgow shoot is actually the finale of the movie.  Shaggy just hopes that Indy doesn't somehow end up being written as going along for the ride unknown to the American public.....

I had a thought as to who Banderas might be playing...

Spoiler
Both Young Indy and Crystal Skull established that Indy rode with Pancho Villa, so maybe Banderas is playing an old friend (or enemy) from back then. I haven't seen the episode in question, so I can't be more specific.

I saw that episode of Young Indy. Pancho was an ally if I remember correctly, but Indy deserted to continue participating in the Mexican revolution to follow his own path. In that series, Indiana meets other historical figures, such as T.E. Lawrence. There you can see the two conversing over a bonfire at the foot of archaeological ruins somewhere in the Middle East, while both reflect on history and their own current lives.

A funny fact is that the relationship between young Indy and his father was kinda similar to the dynamic between Obi Wan and Anakin in the prequels years later.

Referring to the filming stage of production as a "storm"?  Troubled production, I reckon.  Especially given a previous comment made by Frank Marshall, which alluded to the filming as being stressful.

It's an anthology series though, literally who actually cares about continuity, it is not like it marrs the story in any meaningful capacity.

I am interested to hear what the title might be that all being said.
Title: Re: Indiana Jones 5

The appeal for this series for me is that it is basically an anthology franchise. It is never difficult to step in. It's too bad there weren't a bunch of sequels in the 1990s.
James Bond anthology films ate going strong since the early 60s, well I had rather seen Indiana Jones getting this treatment.

I'd be curious see what Jeffrey Boam's rewrite of Indiana Jones and the Saucer Men from Mars was like. Jeb Stuart's draft isn't really bad, but has a ton of problems and doesn't really work. That was basically the only official attempt at an Indy 4 in the 90s.

Basically Indy stumbles onto the Roswell crash, with multiple parties trying to claim the aliens' power source. A lot of ideas and set pieces ended up in Crystal Skull (including the ants, the rocket sled, and a version of the fridge ).

Supposedly Spielberg was happy with Boam's rewrite, but canned the project after Independence Day came out, figuring he couldn't top that film in terms of alien invasion stuff.

They can do whatever they want with the franchise. This 5th installment will be the last one I see, no Harrison Ford no Indiana Jones. It is very simple for me.

Thus movie will not bomb, it can be bad but people will still see it. Follow ups though, they will most likely bomb.

Yeah, there was that WWII era steam locomotive and 40's vehicles and clothing as well, so maybe there are flashback scenes?

Yeah. I can't say there's really much of anything in this Operation Paperclip/Space Race-focused story that has me drawing any explicit comparisons to Raiders, though. I'm definitely not expecting this to be Indy's The Force Awakens.

For starters, the world around the character is actually being allowed to change here. :D

QuoteAn Indiana Jones movie needs a killer opening sequence. The booby-trapped, boulder-rolling tomb in Raiders Of The Lost Ark. The poison-and-diamonds musical number of The Temple Of Doom. The Easter Egg-laden, River Phoenix-starring flashback that begins The Last Crusade. The atomic-bomb test site scramble in The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull. Each represents a pure distillation of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas' love of adventure serials, pitching the audience straight into the action and giving you a thrill before the story proper has even begun. When taking over the reins for Indiana Jones 5, incoming director James Mangold not only had a high bar to live up to, but the opportunity to do something particularly special in the opening minutes.

"I wanted the chance to dive into this kind of full-on George-and-Steven old picture and give the audience an adrenaline blast," Mangold tells Empire in our world-exclusive Indiana Jones 5 issue. The solution? A setpiece that dials the clock back to 1944, set in a castle swarming with Nazis. Through the miracle of de-ageing technology, we're going back towards Raiders-era Indy. "And then we fall out, and you find yourself in 1969," Mangold explains of the transition to the main action of the film. "So that the audience doesn't experience the change between the '40s and '60s as an intellectual conceit, but literally experiences the buccaneering spirit of those early days... and then the beginning of now."

Several techniques were employed to pull the sequence off, including new ILM software that trawled through archived material of the younger Harrison Ford before matching it to the freshly-shot footage. The original Raiders jacket was even pulled out of storage (possibly from the sprawling Area 51 warehouse) and tried back on by Ford, before being replicated thread-for-thread. "My hope is that, although it will be talked about in terms of technology, you just watch it and go, 'Oh my God, they just found footage. This was a thing they shot 40 years ago'," says producer Kathleen Kennedy. "We're dropping you into an adventure, something Indy is looking for, and instantly you have that feeling, 'I'm in an Indiana Jones movie.'"

For its star, coming face-to-face with his younger self even had him convinced. "This is the first time I've seen it where I believe it," Ford tells Empire. "It's a little spooky. I don't think I even want to know how it works, but it works." Not that he's pining to return to the time of the original Indy movies. "Doesn't make me want to be young, though," he says. "I'm glad to have earned my age." Or, as a certain adventuring archaeologist once put it, it's not the years, it's the mileage.

Given the title (insinuating time travel, I'd imagine) and the little UFO on the board during Dr. Jones' lesson, it's definitely looking more and more likely that Die Glocke will be central to the plot, if not the actual core MacGuffin itself.

Man, I am so in. Mangold fits this world and character like a glove while also seemingly evolving everything past what we last saw in 2008/1957, and it feels like Ford hasn't missed a beat.

Also, check the trailer description on YouTube to see George Lucas officially credited as exec producer alongside Spielberg. 8)

Doing some reading on the Antikythera mechanism and yeah, I can see this factoring in big time based on the title, some of the trailer imagery, and the idea of the Space Race factoring in narratively...

The opening lines on Wikipedia's writeup: The Antikythera mechanism (/ˌæntɪkɪˈθɪərə/ AN-tih-kih-THEER-ə) is an Ancient Greek hand-powered orrery, described as the oldest example of an analogue computer[1][2][3] used to predict astronomical positions and eclipses decades in advance.[4][5][6]

I'd imagine Mads Mikkelsen's Voller. He'll likely be set up as the main face of the group of Nazis that Indy is up against in the WWII-era 1940s prologue before the film jumps into its 'modern' setting in 1969 with Voller now working for NASA.

I find it impossible not to be cynical about it and whatever that modern trailer music production thing they do is f**king terrible. They have one of the greatest pieces of music of all time and somehow they make it sound bad.

A third time as well, if you want to count Leto in House of Gucci. Not "old man makeup," per say, but a similarly transformative makeup application like Pearce in Prometheus and Spacey in All the Money in the World.

Trailer looks pretty awful, for some reason I thought they were going to go back for more realistic and gritty  feel similar the og trilogy but this looks like the whole thing is generated with ai prompt or made in Unreal engine 5, with that look I'd rather have a new Indy game. Of course the soft 1080p youtube doesn't help.

I watched the trailer with the knowledge of said rumors... Trailer looks great but why does every trailer theme have that emotional piano motif?

Anyway, watching this with the rumors in mind, it only confirms for me that there is indeed a time travel plot, which I think is the laziest thing, and then..

Spoiler
a contrived sidekick character, Indy meeting his younger self which the trailer shows said younger self (but that could be a flashback, but all points to the time travel plot, which I think is lazy and uninspired), and, interestingly enough, based on the rumors, Mads Mikkelsen is supposed to play a younger version of Toht, which raises eyebrows for me on whether that's true or not... But the most offending rumor is younger Indy sacrificing himself and present Indy fading away and passing the whip and hat to contrived sidekick character...
[close]

My only response to the trailer while watching it was simply "ohhhhh noooo..."

Also does not help when test screenings have also been extremely negative consistently.

Based on what I hear and and what I see, again, it lines up. And honestly it wouldn't surprise me at this point.

My only hope for Indy 5 is that those rumors are wrong, and the film is actually good.

Again... Time travel
Title: Re: Indiana Jones 5
Post by: Nightmare Asylum on Dec 03, 2022, 09:12:17 PM
Time travel could very well be a thing here. I'm cool with that if it's true and curious to see how it is integrated (Antikythera Mechanism? Die Glocke?) and executed before writing off the concept on the whole.

The other stuff you're citing, though? Not happening.
Title: Re: Indiana Jones 5
Post by: xShadowFoxX on Dec 03, 2022, 09:18:44 PM
Again, I don't like the idea of time travel being integrated with Indy Jones because of how lazy it is, being utilized to be this sort of cure-all for certain stories.. and if it involves time travel, I can easily see all of that happening..

Immediately reminded of the Terminator franchise now..

It's not going to alleviate my fears until I watch the film. Because even if a big chunk of the rumors aren't true... I dismissed them all because no one would screw Indy up that badly until I watched the trailer... Even if they weren't true, I feel like time travel is gonna be a big part of whatever's happening and it's just going to feel more contrived than it should be.

Director James Mangold teases a 'hero at sunset' in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

(https://imagesvc.meredithcorp.io/v3/mm/image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fstatic.onecms.io%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2Fsites%2F6%2F2022%2F12%2F12%2FIndiana-Jones-5-121222.jpg)

QuoteWhen it comes to what fans can expect from Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, it's all in the name.

Not that director James Mangold (Ford v Ferrari) is going to reveal just what exactly this mysterious dial is or what it does. "I can't, because I don't want to give the movie away," he tells EW. "But is there a relic in this movie that possesses a kind of power, or may possess a kind of power? And is it based on history and scientific speculation? Yes."

The upcoming film is the fifth in the beloved Harrison Ford-starring franchise, and the first to be helmed by Mangold, 59, taking the reins from Steven Spielberg. It follows the events of the divisive fourth film, 2008's Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which infamously introduced Mutt, Indy's motorcycle-loving, vine-swinging greaser of a son, played by Shia LaBeouf — an addition that was not welcomed by a lot of fans, and was later criticized by the actor himself. LaBeouf and his character will not be in Dial of Destiny, and Mangold promises audiences will "find out what happened" to him, but of course, won't say more.

What he can say is that the film opens in 1944 with a "blast of classic Indy action, me doing my very best version of Steven [Spielberg], and Harrison doing his best version of being under 40." A glimpse of the opening sequence, which features a digitally de-aged version of the 80-year-old actor, appears in the first teaser trailer that was released earlier this month.

From there, the film "tumbles" (per Mangold) right into 1969, where the bulk of the story takes place. When looking at the first three films — all of them set in the 1930s — the director says he was struck by the "wonderful synergy between this kind of pulpy cinematic style of the films, and the period itself and the cinematic language of that day."

The challenge, then, was to bring characters from that older world into a more modern period.

"I mean, 1969 is the beginning of now, really, in terms of technology and the space race," says Mangold. "So, you have Cold Wars, nuclear power, intrigue, the lack of clear good guys and bad guys. In the same way, you have to be really considerate about how you try and transpose a fairly simplistic kind of black-hat, white-hat sensibility into a period that is more complicated. We try to exploit that by jumping forward into 1969 to a hero who is used to a black and white world, [but finds himself] in a world that has gone gray."

In this new world, idealism about science and government has vanished, everyone is much more suspicious of what it might call a hero, and age has caught up with Jones, Mangold says. (But remember Ford's line from Raiders of the Lost Ark: "It's not the years, honey, it's the mileage.")

It's here that we're introduced to Helena, Indy's goddaughter, played by franchise newcomer and Fleabag phenom Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Mangold describes the character as a "catalyst" for the film. "She's a daughter of a friend of Indy's, who we will also meet in the movie," he says. "Helena's gotten herself in a bit of trouble, and brings [that] to Indy's doorstep. She's a character who's a wonderful set of contradictions — charming and brilliant, but also a lot of trouble."

The helmer says it's his hope that Helena's arrival will convert Dial of Destiny into a classic Indy adventure, one sheathed in the thematic elements of the '60s. John Rhys-Davies returns as Sallah, last seen in the third film, The Last Crusade. The film also stars Antonio Banderas, Shaunette Renee Wilson, Thomas Kretschmann, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, and Mads Mikkelsen. Mikkelsen and Holbrook play the villainous Voller and his lackey, Klaber, respectively.

It's not lost on Mangold how special the character of Indiana Jones is to fans, including himself. He refers to the character as "a phenomenally unique hero" and a "brilliant nerd who is also a badass."

"He's a guy who's never happier wearing glasses and reading a book, but somehow finds himself in these kinds of incredible situations. He uses unorthodox weapons to defend himself. He usually figures his way out of trouble with his brain, which is a very different set of circumstances than most of the heroes of our contemporary culture, who are just empowered."

You know, like Marvel's Wolverine, whose swan song Logan Mangold also directed? With Ford saying Dial of Destiny will be his last turn as the fedora-loving and whip-cracking adventurer, Mangold says it's fair to draw some comparisons between the two projects — to a point.

"I'm always interested in this idea of a hero at sunset," the director says. "What does the hero do when the world no longer has a place for him? I find it really interesting to try to look at classical heroes through the prism of our jaundiced contemporary attitudes."

However, whereas Logan was a "very purposefully and intentionally grim adventure, very dramatic, and very serious," Mangold says Dial of Destiny will be very different.

"I am under no illusions that my job making an Indiana Jones film was to suddenly beat the humor out of it and turn it into some kind of dirge," he says. "I think that what we're trying to do is balance both an accurate and realistic appraisal of where this character would be at this time in his life, and do that honestly, and at the same time, try and carry forward what the very title of our movie promises, which is a romp and a wonderful adventure with action and chivalry and escapes by the skin of your nose and ingenious solutions to diabolical problems. This is an Indiana Jones film."

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny hits theaters June 30, 2023.

I've said this before, given how re-shoots are almost a constant these days, there's no reason why they can't film something with him and Harrison. They made reference to Indy's Dad and Marcus in Crystal Skull, and the newest one has Sallah. Let's stop treating Temple of Doom like the red headed step child of the franchise. And come full circle to give Indy closure for Short Round as well.
Title: Re: Indiana Jones 5
Post by: Nightmare Asylum on Mar 14, 2023, 04:58:11 PM
I know at one point early on in development of Crystal Skull, Sallah and Short Round were supposed to be at the wedding at the end (but it was eventually widdled down to just the cast of KotCS itself).

It'd be neat if Short Round did pop up in Dial of Destiny, but at this rate, given the resurgence in his career, I honestly wouldn't be shocked if he ends up getting a full-blown Short Round spinoff, either as a Disney+ series or a film (a film would be my preferred choice). Given Quan's age vs when we last saw Short Round in the 30s, it'd likely have to be set in the late 60s/early 70s like Dial of Destiny.

That's fine. I'm more than ok with this new movie just existing as a movie and not being driven into the ground by an endless amount of streaming spinoffs.
