Anyone see the Gamera movies? Though not as good as Toho's monster movies, they are still enjoyable. I have Destroy all Planets and Gamera Strikes Back.
I've seen a few of the older Gamera movies on MST3K but it's been a great many years + the only think i remember about the movies themselves was their being bad, very bad. I heard the more recent Gamera films were actually quite good but i've never checked them out + highly doubt i will, unless i stumble across them on TV or someone who owns them but the chances of either of those happening... not likely.
The recent Gamera films from the 90's are some of the Best japanese monster flicks ever. Bar NONE. Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris was an amazing film. It was a serious shame that it wasn't in theaters around here. The 60's one were okay, but cheap Godzilla knock-offs.
Flying turtles pwn your mom's face.
Godzilla has a thread, so here's one for his (once) shelled adversary at the box-office. Whether he's the Invincible, Friend to all Children, Guardian of the Universe or simply the Brave we all know Gamera is really neat. Created by Daiei and now owned by Kadokawa, there have been three main iterations of the character.
The original or Showa version was featured in
Gamera, the Giant Monster (1965)
Gamera vs. Barugon (1966)
Gamera vs. Gyaos (1967)
Gamera vs. Viras (1968)
Gamera vs. Guiron (1969)
Gamera vs. Jiger (1970)
Gamera vs. Zigra (1971)
and Gamera, the Super Monster (1980)
The first few films are well made enough, but the series quickly became excessively kiddie friendly (despite having loads of gore). When tasked with updating the character for the '90s Shusuke Kaneko and his team made a point to make Gamera accessible to all ages.
With that came the Heisei trilogy
Gamera, Guardian of the Universe (1995)
Gamera 2: Advent of Legion (1996)
Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris (1999)
When Daiei was bought out by Kadokawa Gamera became their property, so a second update came in the form of Gamera the Brave in 2006. It didn't do too well financially, but it is an underrated little movie combining the best aspects of past films.
I imagine most of us here like monsters movies, so if you enjoy the Godzilla series Gamera is definitely something you'd want to check out. It's a giant, fire-breathing flying turtle... but that's what makes it cool.
I was never a huge fan of the Showa movies, but I did like them for what they are. The 90's Heisei films are awesome and I did thought Gamera: The Brave was a neat film.
I've only seen the first Showa film, and it's been so long I don't really remember it. The 90s trilogy is all levels of awesome, though, even though the subtitles are a bit lacking on my BR set.
Revenge of Iris is one of my Top 10 movies

Mill Creek has since corrected the subtitles on the movie and features. If you mail in your copy they'll send you a replacement.
Gamera! Gamera!
Gamera is really neat! Gamera is filled with meat! We've been eating Gamera!
Sorry had to be done.
Yeah I have a hard time getting through the showa Gamera films. They can be just insane. The 90's trilogy is the Kaiju equivalent of Nolan's TDK trilogy IMO so its awesome. I think Garudian was the First Gamera film I ever saw. Also did anyone here get the Dark Horse Gamera Miniseries?

Oh! What TK member are you, if you don't mind me asking?
I still have a lot of Gamera showa films on vhs. God I loved Gamera.
Advent Legion > Guardian of The Universe > The Brave > Vs. Barugon > Vs. Gyaos > Vs. Guiron > The Invincible > Revenge of Iris > Vs. Zigra > Vs. Jiger > Vs. Viras
I still need to see the last showa movie.
What, no Revenge of Iris?
He put it after The Invincible.
Must have been a ninja edit.
Also, LOL.
I have not seen a Gamera movie since i was a kid oh so many years ago. I need to watch those again, thanks for this thread as I forgot all about Gamera. 8)
I haven't watched any of the Showa Gamera movies, but I do remember seeing some of the newer ones. Been meaning to rewatch them, as I can't really remember much about them, apart from how good I remember the effects being.
Gamera The Brave was going to have sequels which never happen because it bombed big time. I would love to see the other Showa monsters make a comeback.
So, I picked up one of those cheap 8 pack DVD sets that you see all the time. It includes all of the SHpwa Gameras except Super Monster and some thing called Gappa. The Gamera movies are out of order, and I've only watched two. Both were pretty bad, IMO. One even had twenty minutes of blatant stock footage. Even late Showa Godzilla flicks weren't that bad.
Showa Gamera is pretty cheap, yes. All blown away by Heisei Gamera -- finest films of japanese sci-fi I have seen.

Definitely. Iris was completely screwball in terms of plot, but still awesome.
The only officially licensed Showa Gamera releases are from Shout! Factory, so if you want to support the good guys that's where you get them. The first two are packaged individually while the rest are double features. They also put out the MST3K versions in a nice set.

I might grab some of those down the line, just as a sign of good will. Oh, and to see the Japanese versions as well. The first movie was pretty much butchered, from what I could tell.
I've watched a few more of the movies now, so I'll give a summation of my thoughts so far. The movies were all out of order in the set, so bear with me here:
-
Gamera vs Barugon: I didn't properly watch this one. My bros were watching it while I was doing other shit.
-
Gamera vs Viras: Piece of f**king shit. It basically breaks down into two kids being assholes, 20 minutes of stock footage, and Gamera fighting a rubber bathtub toy at the end. Worst one so far.
-
Gamera: the very first Gamera film, and much better than the last one. Unfortunately, my set has the American cut, with a lot of new footage spliced in of American army officers standing acting confused, and a bunch of scientists bitching at each other over stupid shit. Unlike the American cut of the original Godzilla, the new scenes don't work at all and really bring the film down. Oh, and Toshio is a dumbass.
-
Gamera vs Guiron: Much, much better than the plot synopsis would suggest. The movie actually works fairly well as a children's film, and is overall very fun. Guiron's attack style is just hilarious at times. Oh, and Space Gyaos? Really? Methinks the budget is showing. It also has a lot of the same elements from
vs Viras, but they work much better here. The two kids are much more likeable, and the stock footage is much briefer.
-
Gamera vs Gyaos: This one was pretty awesome, and my favorite so far. Gyaos is a great enemy, and the monster fights are the best. Also, the monster fight in most of them have been insanely brutal for movies blatantly aimed at kids, and this one takes the cake in that regard.
Oh, and on a general note, this is one of the only film series I've seen that has multiple examples of a token white kid. Weird.
'Rubber bathtub toy' has to be the best description for a monster in all of time and space.
Wait till you get to Super Monster. Nyehhhh.
Okay, I finished off the old Gamera movies, minus Super Monster.
-Gamera vs Jiger: I had heard this one was pretty good, and a step up from Guiron, which I enjoyed, so I was definitely intrigued by this one. Honestly, I was kind of underwhelmed. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't particularly good, either. Jiger's design was alright, though.
-Gamera vs Zigra: Said to be one of the worst Gamera films and with some of the most annoying kids in the franchise, I was dreading this one. Once again, I found it to be decidedly mediocre, but moreso than Jiger was. The Sea World thing was kind of blatant advertising, and I was amused to no end by the fact that the people their couldn't tell the difference between a dolphin and an orca. As for Zigra, he was pretty disappointing. I like idea of a shark-like kaiju, but the design was pretty lame. I did like his talking bits, though. Not sure why.

Lol, don't remember.
So yeah, I just watched Gamera: Super Monster, very cheesy and filled with stock footage, plus it was a lame way for Gamera to bit the dust. Oh well, here is how I rank the Daiei kaiju movies (putting the Daimajon trilogy in here too 'cause it is just that small):
Wrath of Daimajin > Advent Legion > Guardian of The Universe > Daimajin > The Brave > Vs. Barugon > Return of Daimajin > Vs. Gyaos > Super Monster > Vs. Guiron > The Invincible > Revenge of Iris > Vs. Zigra > Vs. Jiger > Vs. Viras
I recently DL'd Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris (1999). I liked how dark it looked from the trailer compared to other Kaiju films. Do I need to watch the entire trilogy to enjoy the film or is this a stand alone story?

I'd recommend at least seeing Gamera: Guardian of The Universe, as there is a decent enough amount of plot connected between the two.
Though all three of the Gamera movies are EASILY worth the watch.
Will do; thanks, Knight. I might skip out on the second one though. I usually dislike giant monsters who are benevolent or heroic.
The Gamera trilogy is a set of great movies- among the best giant monster movies out there. They don't flinch away from the toll the monsters take on the humans, especially in Gamera 3.
Gonna have to watch 3 very soon, seeing as I'm on a bit of a giant monster film high after viewing Pacific Rim. I enjoyed the first two when I watched them a month or so ago, and from what I head the third is the best one.

Speaking of, because of PacRim, I'm also in need of a giant monster fix. What should I check out? I've been going through the Godzilla movies again. Most recently, I rewatched Tokyo SOS.
For some non-Godzilla movies, I'd definitely recommend Frank Darabont's The Mist (it deals with a few of the same ideas as Pacific Rim). And The Host is an amazing movie.
Damn, I've seen both of those multiple times already... But boy, are they fricking awesome. Especially The Host.

Advent of Legion is my favourite out of the three, but they're all very great movies.

They're such a quantum leap from the original series in tone and quality.
Absolutely. Best japanese sci-fi / Monster films that I have ever seen.

Yeah Toho was really shown up by Gamera during the late 90's. MG2 and Destroyah were some of the best G films ever, but then you had Mothra and Space Godzilla.

Would have preferred the Legacy set to be Bluray. It's not like it would have been any extra effort on their part.
I don't own any Showa Gamera. I had a shitty conversion of Gamera vs Barugon on DVD (that looked like someone recorded it off a VHS tape with a camcorder) but I think I used it as a coaster.

LOL, that article gets it completely wrong saying that Gamera the Brave picks up from Kaneko's trilogy. The ending of Gamera 3 is final and supposed to be the way it is -- for a movie about a giant flying turtle, it's pretty brave and even somehow moving.
Kaneko or bust for this reboot.

Quote from: Aspie on Mar 18, 2014, 06:16:52 PMlol, the Turtle is now leeching from a superior franchise.
Gamera's been doing that from the start, but his last 4 movies easily trump Toho's contemporary output in terms of overall filmic quality. Toho's major fault is when it does produce Godzilla films they pump them out so quickly they suffer in terms of story and effects. As good as Kaneko's GMK is his Gamera trilogy is more tightly bound in almost every department. Even the more 'kid friendly' (which is hardly a criticism to begin with) Gamera the Brave is better than most Heisei and Millennium films.
Here's an interview with Showa Gamera director Noriaki Yuasa conducted in 1996 (the year Gamera: Advent of Legion was released). Yuasa directed all the original Gamera films except the 2nd installment, Gamera vs. Barugon -

Among Gamera's Showa films, I think the ones worth a watch are the original, Guiron and Barugon. I particularly remember Barugon's death -- drowned, with its 'rainbow' stopping suddenly. Very dramatic.
I really love Gyaos, it combines the relative seriousness of the first two films and the childishness that would overwhelm the remainder of the first series perfectly. And of course GOTU updated that whole scenario perfectly.
Guiron and Gyaos were my favs of the Showa films.

Yes. Barugon! That one was my favorite. I loved his roar.
Does anyone else notice how often Gamera gets his ass kicked in every Gamera movie? He gets frozen, eviscerated, amputated, knocked out, shit on, killed, buried, and stomped on ... until finally he is resuscitated and comes back for revenge. Sorta like Hulk Hogan.
Gamera takes a lot of brutal shit, which makes his victories all the sweeter and more earned :P Gamera > Godzilla.
Gamera is basically a superhero, really. And he is the best superhero. f**k Superman and the rest :P
And Gamera, for all its kiddiness, doubles on on the brutality. Space Gyaos got it f**king bad.

Will I sell off the copies of the Trilogy and two Showa volumes I already own for this, just because of the pretty and convenient box?
Probably.
Would you finish watching the Showa films if you did? ;D
Eventually. The second volume is still sealed :D
I have a bad habit of opening movies the minute I buy them, even if I don't plan on watching them right away. :P
Not that I usually sell things, but on the off-chance I wanted to should a new version come out I kind of screwed myself out of selling them marked as "new."
It's one of the only two sealed discs I have in my collection, though :P
I always open my stuff. My dad and my stepmom bought a few DVDs and never opened them, and it always bugged me when they did that.

The new Gamera film has been announced at New York Comic Con with a trailer!
This is freaking insane
Well... not bad.
Here's the official site -
http://gamera-50th.jp/
And some info from August Ragone -
http://augustragone.blogspot.com/2015/10/new-gamera-will-be-revealed-at-nycc-15.html
We should also remember the trailer was more or less a concept piece, much like the one Legendary made for their Godzilla, and a recent all CG Ultraman short Tsuburaya put together.
Edit - Up to date info from Mr. Ragone -
QuoteAccording to the handbills distributed at NYCC today, featuring the kanji characters「帰還」(kikan or returns), the story of this all-new GAMERA is thus summed up (paraphrased for colloquial English): "In a near-future Tokyo, giant monsters, known as 'kaiju', are thriving and terrorizing the populace. Manafu, a young boy, whose father is killed when the Gyaos strike the metropolis, is the only one who is saved by Gamera. What will Manafu's destiny be...?"

Here's a nice rundown of Gamera's history in and out of film -

I'm borrowing this post from the Monster Zero forums. If you want some in-depth info on the Gamera series, look no further!
QuoteOn Saturday, October 17, August Ragone hosted The Kaiju Movie Marathon: Gamera's Revenge, presented by Shout! Factory TV and Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine.
For this all-day event, Shout! Factory TV streamed the English-subtitled Japanese versions of the first eleven Gamera films on their YouTube channel with a live chatbox embedded next to the video. Each movie was preceded by a different interstitial video of August expounding behind-the-scenes information and historical context for the flick that was about to play.
All eleven of August's host segments are now available as individual videos on Shout! Factory TV's YouTube channel. With English-language resources on Gamera's history being relatively scarce in the West compared to Godzilla, these videos provide a lot of eye-opening insight into the making of each film. For quick reference, here are all of them presented in order:

So tempting. So expensive.
I love godzilla and I don't diss on Gamera, but I have to say, when the turtle folds up like a convertible and uses rockets out of it's shell to fly away, my suspension of disbelief for fictional movies runs out.
The Showa films are so outrageous they don't even call for suspension of disbelief, and the Heisei films are so cool you will believe a giant, fire-breathing turtle can fly.
The Arrow limited edition is selling out quick (looks like I missed the boat) but there will be a standard edition with the same discs eventually.

Gamera the Brave is considered a Heisei movie?
I don't think I've ever seen it referred to as such anywhere outside of this box set, but I guess bundling it with the trilogy makes more sense than a standalone release.
That being said, Japan's Heisei era didn't actually end until 2019.
Bigger. Badder. Turtlier.

Just to reiterate on Gamera the Brave, from Wikizilla, which has truly become a great resource -
QuoteDespite being released in 2006 and not sharing continuity with the Gamera trilogy, Gamera the Brave is actually part of the Heisei series, as evidenced by it being grouped with the other Heisei films in official media, such as the Japanese publication, Heisei Gamera Perfection. As such, the Millennium era only applies to the Godzilla series.

QuoteHere's an archive (https://archive.org/details/Fangoria_173_1998_Godzilla_usa_HQS_c2c) of Fangoria #173 (June 1998) with the Shusuke Kaneko profile by Norman England. Given when that issue was published, it also includes an article by Anthony C. Ferrante interviewing Dean Devlin & Roland Emmerich, along with another article by England profiling Haruo Nakajima and Kenpachiro Satsuma, as well as an article by Will Murray covering Godzilla comic books.
Here's an archive (https://archive.org/details/Fangoria_185_1999_Deep_Blue_Sea_HQS_c2c) of Fangoria #185 (August 1999) with England's Gamera 3 set report.

David Milner's personal website (http://www.davmil.org/www.kaijuconversations.com/) is still online. Here's a direct link (http://www.davmil.org/www.kaijuconversations.com/yuasa.htm) to his July 1996 interview with Noriaki Yuasa that was reprinted in Arrow's Gamera set. And to reiterate once again on the standard Gamera sets (linked above) vs the big limited edition one -
QuoteAll of the discs in Arrow's Showa & Heisei sets are the exact same discs from the limited-edition complete collection. The discs have all of the same bonus features, which includes new content produced by Arrow, several Japanese-produced extras, and everything from previous Gamera releases by ADV, Media Blasters, Shout! Factory and Mill Creek. Every movie has an audio commentary. Every existing English dub is included along with the US cuts of the first two flicks.
The only differences between the limited-edition set and the two standard-edition sets are the physical extras and the packaging. The separate Showa & Heisei sets have each disc in its own plastic case housed in a cardboard box. The cases have reversible slipcovers, with Matt Frank's art on one side and original Japanese poster imagery on the other side. The complete collection houses all of the discs in a big book, which comes with postcards for all of the movies featuring Matt Frank's art, along with a big folded-up map of Japan listing locations from the Gamera films. That book is housed in a big cardboard box with two extra books. One of those extra books includes reprints of Dark Horse's entire Gamera comic book miniseries from the '90s, along with Matt Frank's Heisei prequel comic The Last Hope.
The other extra book includes kaiju X-ray illustrations by Jolyon Yates, full-page poster art for every Gamera movie, along with several articles. Three of the articles were originally published in issues of Fangoria magazine back in the '90s, and archived PDF scans of those magazines are available online for easy reading and printing.
Here's an archive (https://archive.org/details/Fangoria_173_1998_Godzilla_usa_HQS_c2c) of Fangoria #173 (June 1998) with the Shusuke Kaneko profile by Norman England. In addition to those articles, the extra book in Arrow's limited-edition Gamera set includes a reprint of David Milner's July 1996 interview with Noriaki Yuasa. Milner's personal website (http://www.davmil.org/www.kaijuconversations.com/) is still online, and here's a direct link (http://www.davmil.org/www.kaijuconversations.com/yuasa.htm) to his interview with Yuasa. He has a lot of other worthwhile interviews chronicled on his site, all translated by Yoshihiko Shibata.
The only articles in Arrow's limited-edition Gamera book that weren't previously published are A History of Gamera by Patrick Macias and A Guide to English-Language Gamera by James Flower. Fortunately some bozo posted photographs of those pages to a folder on Imgur (https://imgur.com/a/LZ91l8m).

QuoteTHE ANCIENT GOD DAIMAJIN ARISES!
The Daimajin Trilogy saw Daiei's Kyoto studios bringing its own iconic movie monster to life in a unique but short-lived series that transplants the Golem legend to Japan's Warring States period of the late-16th century.
In Daimajin, directed by Kimiyoshi Yasuda (Yokai Monsters, Zatoichi on the Road), the young son and daughter of the benevolent feudal lord Hanabusa flee to the mountains when their parents are slain by the treacherous usurper Odate. Ten years later, when the elderly priestess who has harboured them is also murdered, the rage of the slumbering ancient god that lies beneath the crumbling giant stone idol hidden deep in the forests in the mountains is invoked.
In Return of Daimajin, Kenji Misumi (Tale of Zatoichi, Lone Wolf and Cub) brings his usual stylistic flourish, as the wrathful deity is roused from his new home on an island in the middle of a lake by the violent incursions of a vicious warlord.
In the final film, Wrath of Daimajin, by veteran jidaigeki director Kazuo Mori, four young boys make a perilous trip to elicit the help of the ancient mountain god in freeing their family members who have been enslaved by a tyrannical lord.
Remarkably overlooked in the West, these three thrilling tales of feudal oppression and divine retribution meted out by the iconic stone warrior of the title combine lavish period detail with jaw-dropping special effects.

Gamera vs Jiger will be featured in Mystery Science Theater 3000 Season 13.
QuoteThat's right – MST3K is riffing another Gamera movie!
And not just any Gamera movie: Gamera vs. Jiger is by far the most ambitious and outrageous Gamera I've ever seen in my long life of movie riffing.
For starters, the setting is not only a tropical island which has it own kaiju god named Jiger – a brownish greyish triceratops that shoots poisonous quills from her face – but also at the 1970 World's Fair in Suita, Osaka Prefecture, Japan, which is going on at the same time!
So yeah, you're gonna get some fights on the land, sea, sky, and at the World's Fair all featuring the flying turtle taking on Jiger... but then, one of Jiger's darts causes Gamera to fall asleep and turn gray, after which he ends up submerged in the ocean with his mouth hanging open. Then, two ambitious kids drive a mini-sub into Gamera's mouth, and fight a baby Jiger that's living inside Gamera like a virus. And then more things happen, but I kinda lose track at that point.

Well here's something unexpected - Daimajin will appear in Takashi Miike's The Great Yokai War: Guardians (2021), the much belated sequel to Miike's The Great Yokai War from 2005 and bringing together Daiei/Kadokawa's Daimajin and Yokai Monsters series.

The turtle is back.
Could be good. The Godzilla anime movies weren't amazing, but Pacific Rim was really good. Art style looks nice. Hopefully it'll be decent.
Though the Godzilla Earth anime trilogy wasn't particularly good (I did like a lot of stuff in the third film, but by then it was too little too late), I did think that Singular Point was phenomenal. So Netflix kaiju anime's track record isn't totally a lost cause.
I haven't seen Pacific Rim: The Black. Pacific Rim: Uprising left such an awful taste in my mouth that I just don't have the heart to look at anything in that franchise ever again unless Guillermo del Toro were to come back to it.
With this, Netflix will now eventually be home to animated Godzilla, Kong, Ultraman, Pacific Rim, and Gamera projects. I haven't watched any of the current Ultraman animated series on Netflix, but I am very excited for the unrelated animated film that will be coming to the platform at some point.
The official website for the new anime has launched.

Running Google translate on the site doesn't seem to be of any service in figuring this out, but has anyone seen anywhere if this is a series or a film? Can't quite figure out what we're in store for here.

Check it out, it's really good.

QuoteGAMERA -Rebirth- (GAMERAガメラ -Rebirthリバース- Gamera Ribāsu) is an upcoming Gamera production developed by Kadokawa and the GAMERA -Rebirth- Production Committee. Though it has not yet been announced whether it will be a TV series or film, it will stream worldwide via Netflix.
QuoteGAMERA -Rebirth-'s announcement was accompanied by two teaser images—one depicting Gamera in silhouette and the other a closeup of his eye—and a brief teaser trailer. The teaser was uploaded to Kadokawa's anime YouTube channel, suggesting the project may be animated. Beginning November 21, the teaser images will be displayed on the "Shibuya Super Board" billboard on the Tokyu Toyoko train line and the teaser trailer will play on the Umeda Bigman billboard in Osaka.
Also included in the announcement was a comment from Heisei Gamera trilogy director Shusuke Kaneko, who expressed his support for the project and reiterated that he had completed a proposal for a Reiwa Gamera film which he intended to pitch to Kadokawa again after completion of this project. A "Gamera newspaper" containing new information about the project will be distributed at the Tamashii Nations 2022 exhibition in Tokyo from November 18 through 20. An S.H. MonsterArts figure of Gamera will also be unveiled.

Gamera is officially being added to Godzilla Battleline to promote the new anime for this month. The first time that both have crossed over is in a mobile game. It is at least a start.

I watched Rebirth in its entirety today. The animation for the human characters is pretty downright atrocious, but overall, putting that element aside, I found myself liking this show a whole lot more than I expected to. The overall story ended up really clicking for me, especially by the midpoint of the series, and the new takes on all of the kaiju rocked.
I'd say that Rebirth is is way better than the Godzilla anime movie trilogy, though not as good as Singular Point.
I just saw it too. I couldn't have said it better, especially about the human characters.
