Title: AvP Gold Edition direct-IP multiplayer?
Post by: Xenomrph on Nov 07, 2008, 02:21:19 AM
I've been trying to do AvP1 Gold Edition multiplayer with some friends, but we're having problems. Although I'm allowing AvPGE to go through my firewall, and although I've done port-forwarding for my router, I still get "no sessions found" errors when I try to connect to my friend's game, and they get the same thing when they try to connect to mine.

What are we doing wrong?

Turn the firewall off while you play.

Well a friend and I figured it out - my DSL modem was essentially acting like a firewall and not letting me connect to games or let other people connect to games I hosted, so I did some port-forwarding stuff and now it works great. ;D

So what ports did you forward after all?

Um... port 80, ports 2300-2400, and ports 8000-8999, if I remember right.

If you know the model number of your router and/or modem, you can go to www.portforward.com and go to their modem/router guides, find your router/modem model, and then pick which game you want to forward for and it'll give you step-by-step instructions with screenshots and stuff. It's very helpful. :)

I've already mentioned this in a thread here (http://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/index.php?topic=21389.0), but GameRanger is a new alternative for playing Aliens vs Predator 1 (and 2) online. It is the easiest way to play, and doesn't require setting up port forwarding or dealing with other router/firewall issues. This should solve your problem. You can download it at www.GameRanger.com

Yeah, that was something I had been meaning to look into, to do with the ugly way the LithTech engine had to be launched. Never was terribly happy with that implementation.

What about some future updates? that gives us 'dedicated' servers via GR ? so we can run servers 24/7 without having to be in the game via a none dedicated server? (this for AvP2 of course) - not sure how you would do that for AvP1

Would solve a lot of problems.

Keep up the good work.

That's possible for AvP2, yes. I don't think it is possible for AvP1.

If that's the one I remember (it was a while ago), it was being spammed in GameRanger to drive users away from GameRanger. So yes, of course it was blocked. Was that you?

If you're trying to imply that this was the reason then you need to do better detective work.

The "Buy it Now!" feature was introduced in the Mac version of GameRanger probably back in 1999 that was just an affiliate link to a Mac gaming store. I ended up disabling it a year or so later when the company didn't pay any of what was owed (and they eventually went bankrupt).

In 2006 or 2007 when I was building the PC version of GameRanger, I ported the UI across mostly unchanged and never revisited that part.

That was an old link about an online patch, but if you check that link again it promotes GAME RANGER.

i'm the owner of that link, but not sure who was spamming it.. certainly wasn't me (maybe it was lucifer)

As for dedicated servers? cant wait if you get that in an update.

I use Gameranger. It would be great to have dedicated server support for AvP2. I hope this gets added one day.

Thanks.

the devil makes the pots but not the lids!
some alternative idea?
any other program  can support both avp 1 and avp2? (Gold Edition)
There is an alternative method?

Use Tunngle for AvP2. I hear it's good. I know you don't care about AvP Gold so don't even bother including it in your question.

I will follow this advice olde.
although I think GameRanger is more popular.
speaking of gold , i have a question this program also supports primal hunt?
although in this new year I would have preferred you to tell me directly to steam.
