Title: Prometheus Available for Pre-order On iTunes
Post by: Keyes on Sep 07, 2012, 02:23:44 PM
This is from US iTunes. They have the digital HD version up for pre-order, including a look at the menu (possibly the same design as the Blu-ray?). Now take a note of the runtime on the that first pic... 2:39:09  :o

(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg515.imageshack.us%2Fimg515%2F461%2Fprometheusitunes.jpg&hash=3b4337b27a0c98a3333c1bf0a6c3597ad661f483)

Also, if this is any indication of the Blu-ray menu, then the deleted scenes ARE on the film disc (another screenshot on iTunes shows this). Maybe this is just like the Alien Anthology discs, where you have seamless branching AND the option to play the extra scenes individually. We know the deleted scenes add up to about 35 mins (plus the 2hr 4min movie)... so this is looking good for an extended cut :)

Edit: here are the other menu shots:

Thanks for the update, Daz85. I'd completely given up hope on an Extended cut, but this has me cautiously optimistic. Though I noticed that the runtime also reads 02:04:02 in the information section  :-\

That's a nice compromise - include a seamlessly branching extended cut as a bonus feature, but don't market it as a 'Director's Cut' or 'Special Edition'. Colour me impressed...

Please, Space Jesus, let this be true.

Not that it'll fix the multitude of awful story and casting choices that all but ruin the film, but it'll at least make the damned thing watchable. I hope.

Who wants to bet that runtime is just a result of iTunes shoving all the deleted scenes post credits? After all, the runtime on the iTunes page proper still specifies the theatrical cut.

But, Cvalda, I was enjoying being naive. :'(

*sigh*

I hope they don't just shove the deleted scenes in at the end.

Depending on the completion status of the scenes (as in, how finished they are), putting them at the end may actually make a fan edit easier...

Anyone planning on doing an edit? I had considered it but am not really interested anymore in trying to salvage a colossal f**k up.

You'd have to go back and re-Giger up everything for a start. Make the planet more like the one in Alien. Make the suit not a suit etc. Get rid of all the faith bullshit. The list goes on and on and on.

So basically, turn the movie into something it was never intended to be?

What's the point of recreating something what has been achieved before.. When I read about the mistakes of the Prometheus and things which has been executed bad, it's all basically about reusing concepts from the previous movies.

Nobody said they had to recreate Alien.  But to honour the look of Alien and capture the atmosphere of the rest of the franchise shouldn't be that difficult.  They've done it with Aliens and Alien 3.

I could accept the fact that the technology was different (although a bit too advanced I would say, given it's a prequel), I could eventually accept the visual choices Ridley made despite being really disappointed that it looked very different to the Alien franchise and featured a lot more CGI than I would ever have imagined before seeing all the trailers, and I could even accept the pale humanoids.  But on top of all that, he still went and messed up the story good.

So yes, fans do know better.

Honestly, while the film wasn't as Giger-esque as Alien, I thought that it was very respectful of the look and style of the original. Sure, things were different, but I definitely got that Alien vibe with the things I saw on screen.

Aside from the Deacon, of course. That was more of a Kenner vibe.

See, even the Deacon I had no problems with :P

But, even putting myself in the mindset of those who don't, 'Kenner' isn't exactly how I would describe it. I'd say that would fit more with AVPR's Predalien (and even then, its a stretch).

Eh, I don't necessarily agree there. It was certainly strange looking, but I quite liked the design. Is it as good as Giger's original? Of course not. But its an interesting design and works as a sort of subspecies or alternate creation that is skewed off from the more traditional Aliens that we are used to seeing.

Too bad it doesn't work at being frightening or unsettling. The audience laughed out loud at it. It's incredibly derpy looking.

Still a chestburster though, so you don't know what it eventually will look like. The normal chestburster isn't that scary either, but when it's a full grown alien it's the stuff from nightmares.
Title: Re: Prometheus Available for Pre-order On iTunes
Post by: Cvalda on Sep 07, 2012, 07:54:50 PM
Considering the fact that the chestburster scene in Alien is regarded as one of the scariest scenes in cinema history, and the Deacon scene is treated as a punchline in reviews and comments, I'd say the chestburster is a damn sight scarier than the Deacon.

I thought it was a bit unsettling. Not scary, but kind of strange and done in a pretty cool way. The crossfading added a bit to that, too (similar to Ripley's 'emergence from the womb' in Alien Resurrection).

While I'd be lying if I said that my theater seemed scared, there was certainly no laughter.

I loved the interior of the ship, I loved the inside of the temple and the ampule room with the fresco, I loved seeing the Derelict ships.  But at times it felt a little too polished with the other visuals.  I wish I could express myself better.

But the look of the film is really not my issue.  I eventually accepted that and it was good we knew what we were getting into from the first teaser.  Because the way things sounded before, I was expecting an impressive amount of practical effects and only very little CGI (Prometheus flying through space for instance).  The practical effects that were used were impressive indeed.  It just felt like there was potential for so much more.

But my issue with the film lies with the flawed story and some choices made script-wise.

Nope. Giger was embarressed to even show Ridley the mockup he made, because it looked like, in his words, "a chicken."

The designers on Prometheus seem quite proud and satisfied with the Deacon by contrast :)

The designers on Prometheus seem quite proud and satisfied with the Deacon by contrast :)

QuoteThere was the Deacon, which eventually turned into "that blue thing that comes out of the Engineer" at the end of the film — but Huante's version was very different.  (http://io9.com/5917639/10-things-you-didnt-know-about-the-design-of-prometheus)

I've heard this over and over in private conversations. The designers did their job and created all sort of monstrous creatures. It's not their fault if the director decides not to use them and go a different route.

QuoteUpdate: We talked to Fox and confirmed that the DHD initiative is not limited to only Ultraviolet. According to the studio when this kicks off September 18th, it will make more than 600 films available across stores including Amazon, CinemaNow, iTunes, PlayStation, VUDU and Xbox. Prometheus is also Fox's first UV title and its first new release under the DHD program, but if you prefer your digital movies in another format, it looks like you'll be able to get them.

Considering the fact that the chestburster scene in Alien is regarded as one of the scariest scenes in cinema history, and the Deacon scene is treated as a punchline in reviews and comments, I'd say the chestburster is a damn sight scarier than the Deacon.
A scene done well with a non-scary creature is still scary. Alone, the chestburster isn't scary. In the context of that iconic scene, it's extremely frightening (metal bar holding it up and all). The Deacon scene seemed quite forced, though not too too bad, and the creature design wasn't bad. It just suffered as a result of the nature of the scene. And side by side, I'd say by itself the Deacon is certainly more menacing.

Seems so pointless NOT to do one. It's almost like the opposite of whatever the fans say happens  :D

I mean the shits on the disc, I'm sure in this day and age of video editing tools, he could have shoved the scenes back in and printed it by the time he'd smoked his cuban.

That's assuming it's even worthwhile watching though. Probably not.

Exactly.

And let's not forget that movie studios often collaborate with directors to cut films down to fit in as many showings as possible per day.

And Ridley has stated before that first and foremost he is a "business man."  His is focused on pleasing the studios first and then himself and then the fans.

So, I don't think Ridley is above purposely leaving a better film on the cutting room floor.  How many times have you seen Ridley films get extended cuts?  Blade Runner and Kingdom of Heaven were both better in their newer cuts.

The realities of digital VFX production heavy movies make an extended cut (unless it is planned for from the beginning) unlikely. Usually as soon as a shot is dropped from the cut, work on it is being stopped immediately. The only reason we got to see some stills of the CG creature of the Fifield attack is that apparently the decision to go for the practical one was made rather late.
Usually in the facilities, since disk space is always an issue, things get archived soon after the project is completed. So while it is perfectly possible to go back to the archives and finish shots that were dropped early on, it happens rarely.

So, if we do see an extended cut, it would most likely only envolve less vfx heavy, dialogue scenes...

Actually, Fox have never once sold us a new 'Special Edition' of a film in a given format using deleted footage that we already have in that format. The Director's Cut of Alien had some alternate takes of the deleted scenes we'd already seen, along with all-new footage. The closest you could say would be having the Special Edition of Aliens rereleased in the Quadrilogy box, but that hardly counts because within that box we also got Alien: DC, Alien3: AC, and AR: SE.

If Fox does want to sell us an extended cut down the line, it'll have all-new footage cut into it - they can't simply sell us the fan edit that we all know will be online within a week of 10.11.12.

I seem to recall Fox and Cameron getting a lot of mileage out of packaging the deleted scenes/extended version of Aliens a zillion different ways before the Anthology/Quadrilogy just lobbed it on there.  But I remember the early '90s when those scenes were still vaguely mythical if you didn't have a laserdisc or whatever.  "Oooh, the scene about Ripley's daughter!  Oooh, Newt's parents!"

And yes, they can sell an extended cut of Prometheus.  A lot more consumers will just go out and buy the legit extension if it's released as opposed to living on the Internet for a fan edit.  I wish they'd just bundle the theatrical and an extended now.
