Title: What are the good things about The Predator that you liked?
Post by: Master Chief on Dec 19, 2018, 05:11:33 PM
I liked the opening space scene chase and how the Ultimate Predator was communicating with its HQ. The subtitles were a nice touch.  My absolute favorite part of the film is when the Ultimate Predator killed Fugitive (I can't stand traitors).  It showed how terrifying and dangerous it really was!

I still have to watch it again but without a doubt for me I love Sterling K. Brown as Traeger.  He just chews up the scenery for me and is a blast to watch.

I really liked the ships too. The Fugitive Escape. And a great deal of the battle with the Upgrade/Assasin was fun. That razor wire that lopped off those poor troops heads? Ouch!!

I liked THE PREDATOR only when it WAS a predator film in fleeting parts.

The opening PREDATOR ship dogfight in outerspace was spectacular and seeing a predator ship interior is always a nice touch. I personally like it, a trend started by ALIEN VS PREDATOR (I'm talking AVP aesthetic of hologram lazer wrist HUDs rather than the tribal fog of PREDATOR 2).
Was a real wow moment in the cinema with the volume up too loud.

The pre-mission banter and possibility of executed hostages falsely suggested an adult tone.

Seeing the first skinned corpse dangled in the woods gave me chills, not due to fright or disgust, but because I knew PREDATOR had returned to the big screen. I wondered what the fuss was about with a "trouble shoot".

The lead character accidentally activating predator tech to survive his first encounter with a predator. Was clumsy enough to suggets a fluke but was cool and plausible deniability why he didn't have to "do a Dutch" or get killed in his first encounter. That's why I hate PREDATOR-2 because that film the predator was running away from the protagonist. One "shameful sequel" style reviewer said it was because Danny Glovers character wasn't a worthy trophy and kept spoiling his hunt.

The impending threat of PREDATOR dogs (hear me out). Again a nice reuse of the concept from PREDATORS and I thought we might get a suspenseful scene and sense of perile and danger. But no it belly flopped and the dog immediately became comic relief pets and inventory containers (sorry this is a positivity thread).

Fugative PREDATOR breaking out of project stargazer and going ballastic. Amazing scene but peeved unarmed scientist were portrayed as being killed. Maybe a focus on non lethal force just because someone had a surgical instrument.
Cool the PREDATOR kind of understood how guns worked and not out of the realm of possibility considering predators use spearguns.

The takedown of upgrade predator in the jungle. Absolutely brutal exchange...............until the spaceship take-off. Then our cast had plot kryptonite where upgrade throws them around like annoying stepchildren rather than dispatching them in a millisecond like the mercenaries or the crazies.

AVP references. The Alexa Xenomorph Tailspear and the predator Shruken (most popularly recalled from AVP-R despite featured in AVP as well during the Queen Alien battle- pic from AVP 2004 below).

20th Century Fox were dumb to go with the PREDATOR killer imo, rather than a mooted AVP tie-in to the point completely new AVP props were designed. Then again they weren't ready to suggest AVP and AVP-R were really worth burying the Ridley Scott Prometheus continuity despite so obviously wanting a MARVEL style universe.
But a spiritual association with Iron Man? Come on!!!!!!!!!!!!

The escape scene was nice. Fugitive starting with his bare hands, strapped down and still managed to break out.
Also while Fugitives armor was pretty generic sci-fi stuff, I liked that he wore nearly full body armor. It was not just a hunt after all.
Loved the Loonies. Not sure if they really fit into a Predator movie for me, but I liked them and their interaction.

Well, the first act despite being butchered was not 100% awful and was heading somewhere maybe interesting, so there is that.

The new space travel bit was cool. The build up at the start was decent. The Fugitive Pred was good in the lab. That's about it.

I dunno, there's things I don't like even about the parts I do like. I just find it to be a double-edged sword in many ways.

The opening space battle, for instance, is great, but then he opens a rift to earth which feels a little too close to Star Trek for my liking.

The escape scene for sure, although I don't see the killing of unarmed scientist as dishonorable for the Fugitive as he is not on a hunt, he was imprisoned and the scientist were obstacles.

The blood dripping on fugitive's face, f**king great directing, great idea that a lot of people seem to conveniently forgot to downgrade the film. In the 80's, everyone would have yelled "masterpiece" after this scene. Very tribal and comic-bookish ! Upgrade's body language was cool, most of the loonies deaths were memorable. And obviously the overall irreverence of Shane Black's tone.

Getting to see the Upgrade communicate with the Fugitive and humans.  Also the lab scene with the Fugitive and his escape.

Fugitive escape as many have pointed out. To add on I think it was good to see a Predator being resourceful in using it's mandibles and bare hands as weapons plus using an Assault Rifle when convenient.

Thought Olivia Munn was a bad casting choice but she handled her role really well.

Just finished it. There were only two things in the movie I liked.

1. Baxley pointing at the predator and saying "Alien".

2. Baxley descending into his c*ck tantrum when the predator is on top of the bus. It was wondrous.

Everything else sucked big time.

Yes, I agree!  It was great to see both the Fugitive and the Assassin use their mandibles in attack. It's interesting because it's so simple, yet seemed so clever.

Indeed. She definitely did a solid job.

The main pluses about the film were all the cast and characters. I thought they carried the movie. Really enjoyed the interactions and dialogue between the two. Absolutely hilarious.

Predator-wise, I love love loved the escape from the lab. It was great actually getting to see a Predator use one of our weapons. I think Brian & Kyle nailed it as the Fugitive. Also really dug Quantum's armour design. Loved the feudal look.

Brian Prince's performance.

The Loonies potential.

Sterling K Brown's performance.

I like the escape scene and that scene where Predator is holding that guy in the air and motioning to the others to lower their weapons.

Trying to shoot the Predator after that was a stupid decision. He obviously tried to communicate something and wasn't going to kill the guy.

It's hard to imagine, if I had those combat skills, what I would do in that situation (to be honest).

I liked that scene with the Predator signaling them to lower their weapons too. I like it when Predators and Humans interact. It's a small detail, but it does a lot for me as a fan.

I loved Fugitive, he was pretty much everything I could have hoped for - fast, agile, expressive, intelligent, resourceful, realistic. The lab breakout scene was a joy to watch. Kudos to Brian Prince.

And while I feel the character of Casey could have been better used, I did enjoy her and liked the idea of a character who's been optimistically fascinated by the idea of extraterrestrial life finally coming face to face with one.

Same here, those tend to consistently be my favorite moments throughout the movies, comics, and books alike.

The Fugitive's design, him being captured, his escape and his kills. Space sequence was fine, Upgrade using the translator to taunt the humans.

My absolute favorite part of the film is when the Ultimate Predator killed Fugitive.

He kind of killed the movie as well when he did that. Quite the double kill.

Me too.  It kind of hones in on the fact that Predators do understand humans to some extent, besides basic emotions like fear, anger, etc.

The Fugitive on the whole, and his lab escape in particular, were great.

While I wasn't thrilled with the Upgrade's mega-huge design or all of his, well, "upgrades", the way he was used in the plot was neat.

Traeger blowing his own head off with the shoulder cannon was hilarious (I just wish it was edited better so you could see what happened better).

While the Predator Killer armor is a goofy concept, I'll give it points for looking pretty damn cool.

Absolutely wrecked a dude's face with his bare hands. One of a very few times a Predator has been seen using anything other than his weapons to inflict serious damage on a person.

What's funny is that sometime before the movie started filming, I made a thread wondering if fans wanted to see a Predator bite someone.

And now we have a such a scene.

But this one was so forced it was even more cringeworthy.
And he was referring to MOTORCYCLES.

I think nearly everyone in my theater sighed, facepalmed, or rolled their eyes. Several people walked out during the last act. We started with 20 and ended with about 12 or something close to that.

Does your theater offer refunds? I guess anything's possible, but approximately 40% of your audience walking out seems a wee-bit of an exaggeration.  I've never witnessed anything like that and have bought tickets for plenty of worse films than "The Predator" (sadly)

My god, it's like that recent news about multiple "The Predator" endings has really uncapped all of the pent up rage in the community.  8)

I thought the movie was serviceable when I saw it but I am at a total loss of what I thought was good in it.

I quite liked when the Fugitive is escaping the Stargazer complex, and Casey is after him, and suddenly the Assassin's ship roars overhead with two airforce jets behind.  Both the Fugitive Predator and Casey stop, and Casey's wtf look, plus the music selections was just perfect.

But i'm going to be honest, we're goofing off way too much and eventually somebody's going to notice. And no I'm not talking about Hicks.  We should tone it down and stay on topic a little bit more professionally. I mean The Predator forum isn't the Star Wars forum thread. Nice to see the vocal mimicry return, albeit briefly. Id have liked to have seen Fugitive utilise that again somehow rather than the 'thumbs-up' scene.

*The jungle scene opening was a nice homage and worked well.

*The Loonies being a bunch of damaged ex-servicemen was a terrific idea. They were all more likeable and better-developed characters than anyone from Predators or both AVP films.

*The dog fight was something new and worked well.

*Treager was a compelling bad guy.

*All the stargazer base scenes and fugitive's subsequent escape

*Loved the scene with fugitive ontop of the minivan, the chase into the school and its a very cool shot where he appears behind Mckenna and slams him up against the wall.

*I could have done wihout upgrade pred, but his proper reveal at the school and pummeling of fugitive was well done.

*I enjoyed the shootout in the quarry with the crashed ship. Loved cloaked upgrade slamming that guy against the fence.

All in all it's a poor film and not the Predator sequel I wanted, but it is certainly fun to watch.

I agree, in fact I would go so far to say its anti fan service since it upturns everything we know and like about the predators.

One scene I did find funny, was when Quinn's estranged wife gave that speech about how good Quinn to encourage the loonies to go with her husband and out of her house. Only for Baxley to say that it sounds like he can look after himself before trying to watch tv.

Yeah, that was funny. The whole Casey waking up in the hotel room scene and when the Fugitive grabbed a hand and gave the soldier driver a thumbs up, both made me laugh too.

I wonder if Colin Strause ever called members here toxic when he was here. Is the toxic fandom also responsible for AVPR I wonder. Very toxic how members called it AVP Rectum for so long.

No he didn't, cause that word wasn't flavour of the month. He did have a few barney's with Sil though.

From memory I think Sil bust a nut over the Alien on top of the car with the kids in it. Fair point though. Even they cut it out.

Hang on, did you effect the edit Sil? I think you did.

Bust a nut implies I thought it was orgasmic  ???

I had no influence on anything. I did rile them up enough to act like teenagers themselves.

Colin called obnoxious fans pricks, and looking back on those threads - yeah, I was a prick. I stand by the resentment I had, not the way I voiced it.

I'd love to connect to the AvPR guys again, apologise, and talk filmmaking.

Some of the performances were okay, and I liked the intro with the blood dripping on to the invisible pred's face. The movie looked alright too. Other than that it was very mediocre. It's not AVP-R bad, but it's quite close.

Fugitive's eyes. I know this sounds like damning with faint praise, but I honestly loved the almost-but-not-quite yellow glow so much; it looked insanely badass while also subtly gesturing toward the luminescent green blood. Seriously, the scene where he's looking down at Olivia Munn and staring a hole in the camera? Holy shit. Chills.

That whole sequence had a ton of issues, but in that one moment, it really worked.

I watched the first 40 odd minutes on a plane (up to when Olivia Munn tries to leave the hotel room).  Not seen the rest yet.

Was pretty fun so far.  Not brilliant, but certainly entertaining.

Watching the lab escape scene made me think that this movie should of been about a predator trying to collect all the predator tech left behind from previous movies, something similar to the game Predator: Concrete Jungle.

I'm begining to think that i like The Predator especially for things that by majority considered as movie flaws. I mean all that crazy and unlogical stuff with DNA, authism, Earth invading, PredDogs, terrible editing, awful ending etc. I think that for me it's now as trashy fun ride as AVPR and i like it for that. This movie really shouldn't be taken serious to any degree.

P.S. I'm not agitating anyone to like The Predator. No, not anymore.

There's no way The Predator is on the same level of bad as AVPR. The Predator at least has a strong start with likeable characters and actors.

AVPR's only strength was the aesthetics of Wolf  (as well as an interesting glimpse of a Predator planet).

The Predator is the worst entry in the entire fox library, and likely will remain so forever.

Pure and utter mutilation of every positive aspect of its own franchise.

Are folks already forgetting the unused endings with Newt and Ripley?

They were a clear demonstration of the lack of any coherent plan or thought with this...movie. Even resurrection didn't go looking to other franchises to save its own bacon. It had a direction. The Predator was just a glued together mess of bad ideas, and it left the factory without all its screws tightened. It was a Grade A fustercluck.

Every Predator movie feels self-contained so they can easily discard The Predator and no one will even bat an eyelash. It's not like the general public is saying... what happened to Royce!? That's the beauty of the Predator franchise. No reoccurring characters, no reoccurring Predators, all barely tied together with the equivalent to easter eggs versus real story threads.

Yeah, just the films.

And I put the endings forth as Exhibit B of the fact that they were totally lost, and narratively bankrupt.

I do give some crap to Alien Resurrection but I feel that it was trying to be somewhat similar to some of the wacky Alien comics that we've gotten, and some of the things they've done. I mean a talking Xenomorph? I think it was an android but I still can't say that it was a good thing. In that aspect of being a part of the stranger xenomorph universe I was ok with it and actually have a soft spot for it.

But no, they needed the trash the original creature to make the Berserker look good.

I think so too.  Not that I believe Royce would have been a perfect substitute for Galgo, but he would have made a good predecessor.  Would have also helped gauge audience interest in a future movie with the actual Ahab and Galgo.  (You know, if a jump in the future were too unfamiliar for the public, at least having a recognizable "relationship" (if you want to call it that) between a main human and Predator would have helped transition between the different time periods.)

Guess he/the movie just didn't have enough backing or popularity to follow-up.  Or something  :-\

Most of the bit between the crabator being strapped down and making it to the surface is pretty okay. But not all of it, and not anything either side of it.

I liked quite a bit of the film to be honest. It was mostly the bad editing (result of reshoots, methinks), weak final act (again, reshoots) and the terrible final scene (three for three) that dragged it down.

Would also have preferred it if it was made clearer that the DNA-harvesters represented a minority/splinter group in Predator society.

Getting Jake Busey to play the son of the character his dad played in Predator 2 was pretty cool, though I wish the character had more to do in the movie.

Fugitive's escape scene was great. Him just taking a gun, spraying it indiscriminately down a hallway with one arm, and dropping it like trash afterwards is probably one of my favorite moments in the whole series to be honest. Fugitive in general was portrayed and executed very well I thought.

Uhh, I think I remember the Loonies having some good lines, though I can't remember any of the top of my head.

...Yeah that's all I got. There might be more stuff that I liked but I can't recall anything else through the miasma of "Maaaan, what is this bullshit" clouding my brain whenever I try to recall it. I should probably give it a re-watch to remember more clearly.

Strange feeling, isn't it?  :)

I think it's already became another AVPR. Although, i find The Predator more ... fun, i suppose. AVPR is just dark and boring. The problem is can you or not enjoy such product. I personally can but i think it because i suspected what movie was gonna to be right after watching first trailer and I was OK with it. Also my father really liked the movie and his opinion influenced me. And i just can't hate anything A/P related because it requires too much of my physical and psychological strength and I think hatred is pretty exhausting feeling.

P.S. I DO NOT agitate anybody to like The Predator. No, no and no again.

PredKiller ... No, seriously, can you imagine more suitable ending for such crazy messy movie? I think it fits movie perfectly (IMO). It's like cherry on the top of cake covered by ton of delicious cream. And it's at least not Ripley/ Newt ending.

Also i kinda like the design of the suit. Especially these big shoulder canons

I think a redesign is necessary for it to show up again (but given the nature of the suit that shouldn't be a problem) but yeah I didn't think it was that out of place. The framing of the scene was weird but the Predator Killer itself I thought was fine. It's long established the Predator have gear that's ridiculously outfitted and so that's more than welcome in the franchise. Given that the monitors also show Upgrade in relation to the pod itself among everything else in the film, I'm more than willing to believe that it belonged to Upgrade.

Saw it twice in theaters and enjoyed it both times. Bought it on blu ray, enjoyed it then. Watching it on HBO Now, still enjoying it! It does suffer from a leading man that is no Arnold or Danny. But the Loonies are funny and well cast. The action is varied with space ships, gun fights, Predator on Predator crime.
I know some don't like the amount of humor but I dig it. The original and P2 were quite funny on purpose in parts. Also liked how it took the Predator mythos in a different direction with the hybrid and global warming aspects.
I would love to see the original third act with APC and more Predators in the mix.
Still rank them Predator, 2, The Predator , Predators, AVP and Requiem.

To me, where Alien works best is when the human characters are normal, grounded regular men and women.  But Predator works best when the humans are opposite of that, i.e. more exaggerated, larger than life, comic book like characters. Unfortunately, the powers that be do not seem to recognize this and the Predator franchise started going off track with Royce and most of his "team" in Predators, and then even further off the road with the Loonies in my opinion.

But as a Predator fan, I still can find some enjoyment watching it. :)

Predator shake! Like Aquaman, I like the fact they went for it even if they didn't stick the landing. Watching it again I was really struck by the humor and gore. It's just an easy film to put on as it doesn't linger anywhere too long.

Would have loved to see Arnold come out as the Predator Killer but would have been a waste. Now time to write a small Predator story with Old Man Dutch coming face to face again w a creature.

I don't like that they used autism for the concept, but more or less I like to think that the Predator takes "traist" from its prey, like tech or genetic material. That said, I like the potential behind the idea but not how it was executed.

- Bryan Prince does a great job giving Fugitive personality and I sincerely hope he's brought back, he's great.

- I love the design of Fugitive and the Assassin. I'd really like to see that helmet reused somewhere.

- I appreciate a lot of the changes to the arsenal in particular that it limits potential issues should the Predator lose something and every movie they have a habit of dropping shit. Fugitive's gauntlets essentially being identical enables him wrist blades, a computer, and gadgets even upon losing the other. I also really like the implication of the tech being more advanced now with the plasmacaster fitting into the helmet. Just little changes like that really work. The Predator Killer does take things a bit too far but Fugitive and Assassin's gear and its storage I think work. Another thing which might be a bit of unintentional continuity but with the gun being placed in the helmet I like the implication that they realized having two or even a backup is a good call, and it minimizes chances of losing a gun like Wolf did if the Predator will normally be wearing the helmet.

- I like the idea of them taking genetic material. And it does hold up given we know that in Predator continuity they have Xenomorphs. So one would or should expect them to have some genetic knowledge in order to create new Xenomorphs to hunt. Taking the crossovers into account and the prequels noting they're a genetic experiment, Predators just came to the same conclusion. It totally works. We also see them in EU material utilize cybernetics so I don't see why the genetic experimentation would be out of the question.

Execution of the autism idea almost works. Autistic kids have this tendency to be hyper focused on a subject and with Rory figuring out how to use the gear at such a young age, I can see why the Assassin might be interested in dissecting him. They also take genetic material through heads anyways so you'd never know the full version of what they're doing unless we looked so you can preserve past stories since we wouldn't know what they did with it but it's a hunt regardless. The execution doesn't work but this concept almost does. Cut the autism/evolution line from Oliva Munn and replace it with maybe a scene of the Assassin scanning material or the Assassin noting how weird it is for Rory to simply be able to work the tech and call in to a lab to prep. Do something with that.

The Loonies

Some bits of a score were nice re-doings of Silvestri's classic. Rest of the score while not great was decent enough

Opening sequence

Lab sequence

Final fight with Upgrade

As stupid as it was I like lobotomised PredDog. It was cute

Coyle and Baxley double mercy shooting

The credits were well put together.🤣 I really love The  Predator so for me I enjoyed the humour, the action sequences, fugitive's design, the cast. Liked how they tried to go for a marvel style film.

I'll add the upgrade's harpoon weapon thing, although it's a bit underused.

I don't like using word "badass" - but that thing was badass

The flying buzz-saws and pred-grenades were cool.

Big Chungus

Also this. I'm kinda partial to the big guys design, just not the lore around it.

The introduction of Royce was pretty good, but it didn't make it to the movie.(He sets a target of fire and lket him burn to the ground, and it's seen from pov similar to the ones the predators got, to confuse the audience.)
The trap with Cuchillo's cadaver was kinda creepy, I liked it.

Although there was a lot to dislike there were some legitimate merits:

1. Spaceships travelling vast distances by creating and using wormholes.

2. New pred gear like plasmacaster inside of the helmet. Also new info on how the cloaking works. Spaceship barrier forcefield was cool too.

3. Fugitive was a very good new and unique predator design and the actor did a great job with his body motions. It wasn't just jungle hunter with a new helmet and slightly differeht clothes. Also his interaction with the humans was something that we really have not seen before.  He fired a warning shot at the car and with his hands he motioned for the humans to put their guns down. That kind of interaction was fresh even though it was small.

4. The stargazer lab scene was really good.  Also bringing in Jake Busey was a neat connection to predator 2.

By being a metal ball that turns you invisible on command when swallowed? It's ridiculous. Let's forget that one.

In order of importance:

1. The Cast. Special shout outs to the absolute waste of Boyd Holbrook and Sterling K. Brown, but also Thomas Jane, Keegan-Michael Key and others.

2. Fugitive's design (ADI face not withstanding) and also Brian A Prince's performance.

3. Upgrade's harpoon.

Sterling K Brown should've been the protagonist.  Cery engaging.  Concept of Assassin and some of his weaponry was straight up bad ass.  As was that scene where brutally impales the military guy repeatedly and ferociously.  Guy who played Fugitive was good, as was his design.

The fugitive was pretty decent. The thumbs up he gave with the severed arm was great. Squirrel hunters have given middle fingers with squirrel paws lol. So it was relevant to hunting culture somewhat lol.

I really liked the prequel novel, that probably counts as well.
But the novelization of the movie was horrid.

That it did not pick the most idiotic option amongst it's ending scene possibilities.

I still maintain that the opening in Mexico and the lab breakout scene are comfortably the best bits of Predator action we've had since Predator 2. The moment when the Predator's face is revealed by the blood pouring down onto it was incredible.

I mostly agree, except for two tiny things.

1 - The CG effect of the face reveal was really meh. But the idea is marvelous. Better idea than everything we got in all AVP/AVPR/Predators  ;D

2 - The lab breakout is one helluva fun scene, but the predator complexion stand out so much in this mostly white immaculate environment, that it highlights the fact that this is a guy in a suit. The pred was never created to be in another environment than the jungle initially, that's why it's a bit of a visual problem for me.

Yeah, for me, I didn't find the actual sequence particularly incredible, but I did and still do like what they were going for!
