Now that Alien – Sea of Sorrows has been out for several months and has been digested by fans, author James A. Moore and I sat down for a chat to catch up and have a more in depth talk about Sea of Sorrows for episode #20 of the AvPGalaxy Podcast:

The podcast isn't up at the minute. We're running into some issues. Bare with us.

Technical issues are now dealt with. The podcast is now available.

Interesting to hear that Fox asked 'the latest video game' be considered canon for the novel.

Corporal Hicks

Seems to me that there is a concerted effort to have all the EU fit going forward.

robbritton

It's comforting to see Fox finally apparently take the series seriously as a whole*. I like the insistence that Alien 3 and Resurrection be included, and that the mistakes of (particularly) the latter be rectified. All this new stuff is reminiscent of the feeling when the first Dark Horse comics arrived - it feels like they're looking to a future, rather than just treading water.

*Although, between timeline issues with the Prometheus comic and the whole

thing in the first book, they do seem to be going out of their way to make the whole thing needlessly complicated!

Corporal Hicks

What makes you say its overly complicated?

robbritton

Maybe complicated is the wrong word, convoluted perhaps? The basic plot of Out Of The Shadows is a bigger stretch of credulity than Alien Isolation's use of Amanda, but I can understand why they did it to set up this continuity. It's just that at this early stage there's a lot of, "well, I guess that could happen..." going on, a lot of raking over coals to start this new thread. They're getting away with these 'things that happened within the original films timelines' so far, but it's all dangerously close to Turk in the cryotube sometimes.

That aside, it's lovely to see Fox care enough to request a continuity, so it's a little niggle really. I'm enjoying the books, which is the important bit when all is said and done!

Corporal Hicks

Ripley's inclusion in Out of the Shadows is still a little jarring but it's the only problem in the new continuity. I wouldn't call it convoluted at all - just one incident of it.

Amanda in Isolation makes sense though. She's looking for her mother. Perfectly believable scenario, I reckon.

Interesting listen.

I knew Rollins was a synthetic :)

Yes, and I still think Vickers maybe was also, but more along the lines of a "Replicant" from Bladerunner.  An organic synthetic much like that Eldon character in the Fire and Stone comics.

Thanks for the interview!  Insightful.

Darkness

Ah, I love this guy. Makes me chuckle.

Xenomorphine

Unless I'm missing something, the comic character hasn't been shown to have any organic parts.

As regards Amanda, without spoiling anything, the game essentially puts her fate at direct odds with what Burke had reason to openly relate about her. I don't know how anyone is going to square that circle.

Complete agreement on the Amanda thing, was just offering it as a comparison as it was another recent thing I remember being contentious to begin with!

Looking for her mother is one thing.  Stumbling across an Alien is incredibly (in its most literal sense) convenient.

Spoiler
Ash's AI actively looking for a chance to complete his mission in OotS makes more sense and that was stretching things.
