Sad.

I hope the days of seeing Alien movies in theaters aren't over.

I wonder if it will be theatrical and on Hulu. Currently Hulu (stateside) has P1, P2 and Predators. With HBO Max having the 2 AVP's.

Also on a barely related note: Twentieth Century sold Netflix the distribution rights to "The Woman in the Window" which gives me a sliver of hope that the two companies can come to an agreement regarding the AVP anime.

So I can't see it then, I'm assuming they'll rent the rights to other people for international distribution

They have multiple international distribution channels. In Australia for example it would likely be theatrical or Star.

What's the actual context of this quote? Are we sure they were talking about initial release? Could be they just meant it will eventually end up on Hulu for streaming in the US post theatrical release

When Disney acquired Fox, I was always in the assumption camp that Hulu or streaming in general would be the next logical step for Alien & Predator films and/or series, considering their b-movie nature, their last disappointing theatrical entries and an aging core fanbase less likely to leave the comfort of their own living room (even though I would miss the theatrical experience.)  :'(

Marc Toberoff, in regards to a wide spanning jurisdiction, indicated Fox/20th Century Studios has only one Plaintiff, but the Thomas Brothers has more defendants than 20th Century especially Disney, because Skulls is going to be distributed by Hulu which is owned by Disney and used to be Fox owned.

Maybe it was learned by him through discovery? Maybe he's somehow misinformed (even though court requires accuracy) and it just wasn't challenged? I don't know but it's definitely what he said.

Not entirely surprising, but still a little disappointing. I'd imagine it'll be on the Star section of Disney+ internationally, since Hulu doesn't exist outside of the States as far as I know.

Will Smith in Bright. Sandra Bullock in Bird Box. Martin Scorsese's The Irishman with De Niro, Pacino and Pesci.

What other big primarily streaming-only movies are out there?

My initial thoughts here are that it's still too early to say if it will be a streaming only movie, or have some type of hybrid release. The movie JUST started filming and we know little to nothing yet.

While the court case could have specific verbiage, it might still change over time. I won't be surprised if we see a hybrid release, or POV same day release (like there's been for many years now), or maybe it does theatrical for a small limited window in Los Angeles and New York, to then a wider small week or two long release like many movie do, to then go to streaming.

My thing is it's too early to call right now, and I bet verbiage is still being worded out on how this is going to be released, as it's still not even made yet.

Voodoo, in regards to all but Bright, they all had short, limited theatrical runs for a few weeks. The movie "Upgrade" was a good example of that. Had a longer run than the other two, but I saw it in theaters, enjoyed it enough to then go home and watch it with my brother the same night on POV. Could maybe play out in that case. I'm also being optimistic, as I'd like this to be a theatrical experience. So I'm gonna wait until an official announcement is made to react to this news.

Though not ranking in super hero movie money, if executed well Alien and Predator content could still do good business theatrically, such as shame all that potential is being wasted.

I think this is the only way to keep pumping out stories at a steady rate.  Shows are much better quality then a lot of movies these days.

I believe The Irishman had a limited big city theatrical release too for a couple weeks. It might be how most of these big streaming movies with big stars roll even though Skulls doesn't have any big stars that we're aware of - more money to spend on production costs!

But hey, I'm still worried wondering if this film will even be completed, so I can't even worry about the nature of its release at this point.

Honestly, the "ESSS JAAAYYYY DOUBLEYOUUUU" rants were more than enough to turn me off from him, even when there was some seemingly valid information.

Anyways, back on track for this movie, the streaming release kind of rubs me the wrong way... but I love the setting and Trachtenberg is great so I remain curious.

It would probably be released in Star section of Disney+ in other parts of the world. I'm sure it would bring a lot of new subscribers. I would like a theatrical release but this might not be a bad thing. The budget can still be big.

I'd be a little surprised if there wasn't also a theatrical release considering the last entry was the highest grossing film in the franchise.

Can't forget inflation brother! You can't equate 1987 dollars to 2018. Predator 87 remains the box office king of the franchise. Plus it grossed 5 times it's budget!

Not sure what the budget is but I just hope it doesn't look like a made for TV film with a cheap looking Predator in it.

Because it's not a Disney movie.

Here in the U.S., Disney+ does stream movies other than Disney movies, like 20th Century Fox films.

I believe why Skulls would be Hulu US instead of Disney+ US is basically Disney+ US only streams more family friendly films. Think Rated PG-13 and under.

Rated R content with people's spines and skulls getting torn out of their bodies doesn't fit Disney+ US's demographic. :)

Trachtenberg gives me hope (10 Cloverfield Lane was solid) and I like the idea of the story (a period setting is long overdue). Streaming release is a bummer but if it allows the film to be more of its own thing without the worries that go into a theatrical release I'm fine with that.

They need to give ADI a rest though. They know Legacy Effects exists right?

Legacy might've been occupied given they're involvement with Disney and no less than three Star Wars productions going on along with Marvel offerings. They also have pretty bad looking aliens and slap unnecessary CGI on them and the droids as if the work couldn't speak for itself.

We also may go on about crabs here but I sincerely hope they weren't the ones to assemble the scout trooper because for two seasons that thing's been f**ked up.

What's that saying? The definition of insanity is keep doing the same thing but expecting a different result?

If I had to guess, I would put ADI's constant involvement on Producer John Davis because I assume they're familiar and cheap. And John either hasn't heard fan complaints yet, or he is just dismissing them. That's my guess at least.

But the buck definitely stops with Tom and Alec. I don't know how they stop during the production of these heads and say, woah, woah, this isn't right. We have to fix this! Especially the Fugitive's pockets of skin.

One day someone has to definitely ask them a few serious questions on the issue, but respectfully. Alec, Tom, so these awkward folds, these rolls, these strange pockets. You couldn't have been happy with them right? Theyre not on the maquette. What went wrong you think? What's causing this?

If they don't even acknowledge something went awry at that point, then, woah...

I think you're mental.

I'm mostly really impressed with The Mandalorian's effects. Nothing in it looks nearly as awful as every Predator since the original Stan Winston creations.

I also searched up that apparent Trooper design change and found nothing.

Or they might disagree it's a problem.

It's shocking, I know. But maybe fans not liking something doesn't actually mean everyone else thinks the same thing?

They may well hate it, but the attitude that what we think is the only right way to look at it and anything else is wrong or delusional is kind of obnoxious and tiring.

I'm usually willing to play Devil's advocate but...

I find it difficult to believe anyone thinks they don't look like complete shit, particularly pertaining to very visible imperfections like folds, but then again I find it difficult to believe people like the Requiem Aliens or PredAlien and they exist somehow.

I think its very possible that they haven't heard the complaints. Also directors might think that those faces look good without comparing them to the first two Predator movies.

I strongly stand by the opinion if the ADI Predator faces were lit and shot better, most wouldn't even complain. They haven't photographed a Predator too well since Predator 2. Camera work matters, and it doesn't do ADI favors because having seen the actual pieces in real life with my own eyes, they look fantastic.

Yes, there can be improvements in the design, always, but it's usually time that doesn't allow. Even on the Winston Predators, but you don't see as many flaws there because of how well they are shot. But if you look carefully, you'll notice them. I only stand by this, probably because of the camera and light work I do, and know that the correct light can make anything look amazing. If I can make a toy look like it's shot from a movie, I know a properly lit and shot ADI Predator can blow us all away.

I've been unimpressed with the camera work since P2 and hope that changes with Skulls. And I can't wait to see what ADI makes and hope they knock it out of the park.

It's just absurd to me but...

I realise my opinion's not the only one that matters, hence me pointing out other instances of thinking people crazy when it comes to good design, on the prior page.

Obviously by that admittance I know people can like different things, yet you felt the need to point that out anyway, and in that respect I will take pretention over condescension anyday.

Good points about the camera work.

Still though, the original KPH Predator is the only on screen Pred that makes me believe it really could be a real life alien and not a guy in a suit. In fact I still don't believe it's a guy in a suit, that Pred is real in my eyes. 😬😅

20 seconds in when the mask comes off. Left temple, right of frame. Few times throughout as well but that's the first time it shows up.

I'm not entirely sure it's intentional - it could well be a side effect of the mandible control - but God it works.

Completely agree there as well. All the Predators haven't moved as well since we lost KPH. Proof that he's a legend. Those who followed him have done great and fantastic work though, but no one has yet to hit his level.

Performance is definitely part of the recipe, and puppeteer work, but ADI's poor execution in certain areas are definitely in play here too and definitely deserves to be on the discussion table.

When you have odd folds, rolls and skin pockets not on the maquette but on your final product, the problem can't be dismissed solely to improper lighting.

Performance all around definitely helps! I always thought the mandibles on City Hunter looked the coolest, but were the most choppy and stuttery in performance.

But camera work can elevate it all, along with the light, and personally I think those are all poorly composed and lit shots in the examples. Better lens focal lengths and angles can trick the eye into not noticing these things. But here, we have boring, static angles in very soft, almost beauty light. Scar is supposed to be outside, in the foggy moonlight. And yet, he looks like he's lit for a bright and pretty beauty photo. Fugitive is just lit... Ew... So soft and bland, which is a shame because Larry Fong is a great cinematographer, but The Predator was just butt ugly to look at in general. Wolf in that shot doesn't look too bad compared to the other two you posted, to be honest. It doesn't help that the example is a screen recording of a television though. But AvPR had poor light, along with the poor transfer after release. You can light things in shadow, without it being too dark.

But even in some decent light... Those folds can still be there, and on Stan's work too!

Wolf is the best of the bunch IMO. The broken tusk and scarring probably helps.

I really like that extended Wolf arrival scene when he takes his mask off in the ship. A rare moment in the film where the lighting suits the scene.

Oh without a doubt. Especially with pausing, there has always been a slight roll or fold in both Jungle Hunter & City Hunter to find. Even in the shots we love to post...

That can be explained by needing to accommodate a much wider range of motion, though. If the mandibles weren't designed to open ridiculously wide, there'd be no need for the excess skin.

If it is sold as a collector's item versus something edible, I at least believe it's permitted? But against the eBay seller guidelines or not, you can find limited edition sealed cereal boxes, sealed coke cans & bottles, etc. sold on ebay right now.

It's a shame that Ian hasn't been invited back to perform. I read that he had schedule conflicts maybe?...

Or maybe the filmmakers just didn't want him?

No idea why they didn't get him for Predators (you'd have thought he'd be an obvious cast for Mr.Black given the size difference in Predators) though he might've been busy on Game of Thrones when The Predator was starting production. According to IMDB he might've been occupied for both films. In this case I strongly suspect Kyle Strauts was available and ADI still had his molds and being on the clock might've been an easier get.

I am frankly getting tired of the streaming wars and that distributers will covet their franchises. I fear when you will only get to watch the Alien and Predator films on Disney's streaming services. Glad I've been buying my favorites on Amazon while they are still available there. :(

A legitimate fear and one I hold with Skulls. There have been certain Hulu/Netflix/Amazon exclusive content that has yet to be released on physical media. Has Old Guard had a wide release on blu-ray? Can't seem to find it. And if so, it was quiet and not many released. But these seem to be happening with lesser known films/shows or not as popular. I'd have to think 20th Century Studios/Disney would make Skulls or any future films available on physical media after a stint on streaming. Then again, only time will tell and it would be so heartbreaking to have these films only available on streaming and nowhere else.

Yeah, me Hicks and RidgeTop were discussing this briefly yesterday and Netflix's Daredevil Season 3 not available to purchase on physical media much to my chagrin, the last and arguably best season, forcing me to keep Netflix when I want to revisit it.

So would I be surprised if Skulls, especially the new Alien series never gets a physical release? Unfortunately no.  :-\

Why get someone on the hook for a single purchase that factors physical media production costs with distributor & retailer cuts into profit, when they can get more people on the hook for a monthly fee instead.

As a physical media collector, I really hope this doesn't come to pass. Streaming doesn't have the same quality a physical media.

Still annoyed I can't get Daredevil S3 or Punisher on blu. Very much hoping Skulls gets a physical release.

Presuming it's any good, of course.

It's all convenience.

You can put a disk into the machine and the thing boots up. Or you can not do that and have to connect to the internet. If nobody was paying attention to shit like stadia then I'll just say it, streaming only just doesn't work. Once the servers are gone, it's over. No internet and you can't buy the product. You're goal is to sell as much of the product as possible and not everyone lives in an area where it is easy to stream or even if they do it doesn't mean they'll be using your services. Some exceptions like Daredevil will happen but physical media isn't going anywhere and probably will even make comic adaptations of movies worth it again. Even if it wont be a physical release of a DVD I'm pretty sure we will have options to experience the story.

Until streaming moves towards a model of allowing you to buy the individual movies/series you want to watch instead of having to subscribe to ten different services just to get the few decent things they each make, I won't be doing it. (I do have Amazon Prime, but the free next day delivery factors into that beyond the streaming.)

And yeah, what other people have said about losing all access to a film/show if the provider decides they aren't going to provide it anymore is definitely a problem. No one can take my CDs and DVDs off my shelves. On top of which I own a bunch of music and movies you simply can't stream.

I find it humorous the company known for kids films, that sanitized classics like Cinderella and Rapunzel (the real tales are more grime, pun intended) now owns the most adult franchises of Alien and Predator (tentative, I know there is the lawsuite).

Starship Troopers and Pulp Fiction were technically made by Disney. Are they sanitised kids' films?

It was a different time and it was on the movie ride as well as was meant to be in that one alien ride that became the Sitch.

Though I don't think we'd be getting anything with them roaming the parks outside the AVP incarnations simply due to the fact that they don't want the R-rated versions present. I sincerely doubt we'd get a Punisher face character for much the same reason. It's far more likely if anything showed up it would be a special event or attraction but with the PG-13 Predators rather than Jungle Hunter. Though I could also just as easily see a few easter eggs in Galaxies Edge like a Predator helmet mounted on a shop wall or a Xenomorph egg in some sort of collection. Kind of like how the Star Wars comics have a suit of Predator armor in an Imperial artifact collection.

I don't want to buy any streaming services,I have Netflix and payed $10 for a month HBO but only watched Justice League. Maybe if more people pirate these they will be forced to become one platform at a low price. Look at music. Everyone started using Napster and othe ptps and the record companies knew it woulnt stop so now most of it is free on youtube exept for an advert to before. It wasnt that long ago that I would pay $20+ a week to rent a couple movies for a night or two.

Apparently NBCUniversal is what owns the minority stake in Hulu. Disney seemingly can't buy them out until 2024, I'd imagine by then is when things would fold into Disney+. Otherwise it's just whatever deals had been going on pre-Disney and potentially different countries having different streaming rules.
