I think it was filmed by having an establishing shot of the 'box' (Bolaji or a contortionist) in the corridor followed by extreme close-up shots of limbs and head unfolding (contortionist). The Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine mentioned that some shots of the Alien folded up as a box were done in close-up.That may explain why no photo's or footage of the prop exist-there never was a Alien box prop to begin with.
Well, I'm not sure why anyone is expecting to find a box prop anyway.
If it was just a performer in the suit squatting, you're left with the problem of how to obscure the prominent dorsal tubes which would have broken up the more box-like form that W.S. described-unless it was a full frontal angle like the crab-walk outtake, but the deleted Alien-in-corridor footage clearly shows the creature in profile.
Yes, I speculated that the suit would have been inflated, so they might put an inflatable doll or something inside of some sort, but Walter Simonson felt it was someone inside so I gave up on the inflatable doll or whatever inside and has I continued with that thought and no one could find anything about an inflatable something or inside I wouldn't worry too much. Other thoughts I've had has that perhaps a performer had his lower half in the space beneath a floor in postproduction but I can't really imagine the scene. So was there something else cobbled together from bits of the alien suit around an armature for a box like shape for someone to pop out of, i haven't got a clue but I'm not relying on there to be such a thing. They were creating other things in postproduction like other little facehuggers on the back of the Narcissus and we haven't seen them either.
I've seen the different bits of the scene that show Bolaji in the suit crouching down on the floor and Walter says it wasn't what he was talking about, so I'm going with him thinking that there was something else shot that was deliberately strange, so it seemed that more than one person thought it was folded up like a box since there's the report from the Famous Monsters of Filmland as well that's based on an interview with O'Bannon mentioned in a way quite separate from Walter's statement..
Well, the dorsal tubes would have to be removed to have seem like a box, or indeed the performer in the suit would be crouched on his side.

I so badly want to see the Box Alien footage found-if it was filmed.Or even some sort of CGI reconstruction done by a fan.
