Title: Opinions on Extinction?
Post by: Corporal Hicks on Dec 12, 2006, 10:45:46 AM
It's been a while since I played it but I'll be getting it again soon - I lent it to a friend and never got it back  >:( I rather enjoyed it, not alot but a fair bit. What did you guys think of it?

I despise it. And it was such a nice idea, too. Just terribly executed.

I enjoyed extinction, it was a budget priced game that I didnt expect much from. But I did enjoy it, building mass amounts of Aliens or hearing the Preadtor roar as he ripped out the spine. Also it had a great intro video.

I hated it for quite a long time after only renting it when it was released. Bought it this year on ebay and I really like it. I love the alien life cycle and all the different units. I completed every mission. I just wish it would have been on PC.

Think I'm gonna get a new copy for Christmas, actually. I did like it but it was such a wierd game for me to play. Sometimes I'd fly through it, other times I'd be utterly useless.  :-\

But yeah. A PC version would have been so much better. It'd have allowed for more complex gameplay and more emersion into the world. I mean, imagine it. Build your own colony/hive, build APCs and Dropships and etc.

The game could've been better, but I liked it anyway.

I got up to 100 aliens on level 5

No, me neither. But I'm just imaging how it would work. One player plays as a species, then another player plays as the other species.

A decent game that should have been for PC, have had multiplayer and allowed ease of customization (there more than just a few skins that I would have changed).

I thought Extinction was ok at the time i played it, but like others have said, it would of been better on PC and with multiplayer. Only problem i had with is, was how ridiculously powerful the ravagers were...well at least when i was playing as Marines or Preds, and how the story/campaign was too short, also IIRC it lacked a skirmish mode which i thought would of improved it.

How did you get 100 Aliens?
Title: Re: Opinions on Extinction?
Post by: FACEBOX on Jan 15, 2007, 06:51:32 PM
LEVEL 5 in the ALIEN campaign: Here's a summery in 10 simple steps. You can use the cheat to make it easier, but you can also do it my way.

1: Don't release any aliens. Use the one the game starts with (the warrior)
2: Don't try to fight the marines (run past them)
3: Find the room with the eggs, and open the one with the Praetorian eggs only!!!!!
4: Now defend the facehuggers with your life, and create a queen.
5: Use the aliens to kill off some marines in order to create more hosts and hive-points. (note: using the Queen helps)
6: Create Eggsack, then upgrade the Preatorians
7: Create as many Ravegers as you can to defend the hive (about 3)

8: Make sure you do not release any other aliens before the Queen lays 45/45 eggs and aliens. (this is the boring part)
9: Now release all the other cells containing aliens or eggs without killing the lieutenants!
10: You now have 100 aliens!

Have fun.

Well i took me a while but yur steps were accurate. Good job. I was fun. dident want to finish the level. One thing i strongly dislike about the game is the pop. count. Aliens shouldent have a pop count. Well if I had it on PS2, i got it on xbox
Title: Re: Opinions on Extinction?

The Aliens have a pop count but there must be something wrong with the programing, you can beat the pop count, just make more Aliens.

I got the game for PS2 and XBOX, there both the same.

The one with the big Predator building? Yeah, that was pretty hard. The final battle with the predators guarding the artifact was almost impossible. I had to call in reinforcements to take down the Queen.

I was disapointed with the game, it could have been better and gameplay just..didnt feel right. I still played through it, and it was alright, but not what I expected. If I wanna play an AvP RTS I'll just play starcraft, because its clear Starcraft was influenced by AvP and its the same concept.

I'm playing through it right now. I played it once a couple of years, unlocked the cheatsand I only use the money cheat (before I discovered the cheats to get them  >:() I am on the last Alien campaign level now.

Great game though, I hope they do another one similar to it. Maybe they can have all the non-canon Aliens (from the toyline) and invent new ones too.  ;D

i think i WANTED to love it more then i actually loved it. I still think Strategy games simply do not belong on consoles. If they had extinct on pc, where a mouse was useable, that would have been tops.  :o

graphically it lacked as well, but the ideas were definitely there.

all in all, i still enjoyed playing it, but the xbox controller method made the game unneccassarily fiddly.

When I 1st got and played the game, I really didn't know it was a point and click game, I didn't have internet access at the time and there was nothing about the game in magazines or anything, except a release date, so when I played and discovered it was point and click, I was really unhappy with it, but over time it grew on me and I love it now, I just wish there was some better un-lockables and better graphics.

Well, I bought it shortly after I got my Xbox...back in 2003/4

...The intro really set the mood - what an amazing piece of CGI. Very impressed.
It was one of those things you just 'had to show to your friends.' : )

The game itself was fun to play...and some levels were immensely enjoyable.
(And my God, the last mission for the Marines was a b*tch!)

It could have done with a skirmish mode and a map editor...that would have so increased the game's overall life.

But the ONE thing that really left a sour taste in my mouth - was the end of each campaign.
No amazing CGI animation like the intro (which I was somewhat led to expect...) for completing the campaigns...that was bad.

Some great ideas - and I think all the campaigns were uniquely fun to play in their own right.
I'd like to hope they make another one similar (i'm VERY interested about the aliens RPG and first person shooter game that Sega have announced)...but based on the fact that most people consider 'Extinction' to be 'toilet' - I doubt this will happen.

Nonetheless, I remain ever hopeful.

I got this game the week it was released, and I must say at first i was confused with how i felt towards it... I thought and still think to this day that the intro was amazing, The balance between each race was pretty good too.. My first thought at playing as the alien was that it would be to difficult but as i got on with it, i found that they were without a doubt the SICKEST race to use... I do got some complaints about this game... First NO MUTIPLAYER??? NO ONLINE?? This should DEF been in it.. I mean come on it is a RTS game... It would be better on PC... and where were the Endings for completing the game with each race??? There was nothing... all you do is go back to the main menu... I did hear that the game was really really rushed at the last minute so this could be why... Since then my opinions towards this game changed.. I play it alot now... I cannot wait for the first person shooter Aliens game coming soon and the Alien RPG i heard about...

I really like the game. But one thing that really hacked me off in this game was that the AI especially for the marines is horrendous. You can't take a large group of marines and tell them to go to a point on the map because half the time they split up and go in all sorts of directions. I've had guys go completely opposite directions and try to take the longest route possible to a waypoint sometimes they try to take paths that have no openings to the waypoint. It is super annoying to find your guys all killed just because the AI screwed up.

Title: Re: Opinions on Extinction?
Post by: DB on May 14, 2008, 03:10:06 AM
Just replayed Extinction a few days ago.

Found it somewhat mediocre and the class designs for the species confused me.

Ran around a bit and tried thinking of how I'd rework the existing Extinction mechanic...

Aliens:

For the Aliens it seems pretty daft to have the caste classes determined by host. Especially considering you can't control what hosts are available in an area. That's just stupid biologically. What if I only have oswocs near me? My hive is doomed as it's filled with combat inefficient Drones.

That needs to be scrapped.

The Aliens should be divided into several categories within Transbreed type. These categories belong to physical castes. Within these castes the Aliens can vary a little depending on host. However, they still maintain similarities in combat efficiency and role. The Alien caste should be determined by spending points on eggs (somewhat like with Praetorians, except the facehugger is the same).

Transbreed:

Workers - The same as the Drone class in the game. They are small, albino Aliens with no armor and physical weakness. Upgrades result in acid spit and the cysts. Creating Workers takes no points at all.

Soldiers - Based on the Warrior class in AvP:E. Pretty good for everything - they explode when killed in an acid shower. Upgrades are the same as in the game. They can revive when not burned, have better weapons, etc.

Scout - Based on Runner class. Very low health and strength, but extreme speed and senses, super fast health regen outside of hive. Have a leaping attack. Upgrades are the same: poison. All Aliens are quadropedal, regardless of host.

Host Variation:

Different hosts cause slight variations in all of the Aliens above mentioned.

Humans - The Aliens like we see in the films. They are good in all stats, but excel in none.

Oswocs - Bulkier and slightly slower Aliens that have more health. Born Aliens are mostly quadropedal, but can walk bipedally at will (except Runner).

Kurns  + Kriltics - Smaller Aliens with less health and slightly increased speed. Prefer quadropedal movement but can become bipedal at will.

Predators - As the hardest species to get hosts from, Aliens born from them have an extra bonus.

-Superior to all other hosts in all categories. Better health, speed, and attack power. Aliens are slightly bigger and have mandibles (dreadlocks?).
-A special upgrade allows Predator born Aliens to gain XP and become more powerful.

The Predators are also kind-of iffy, as you have these retard Predators that only use a single weapon despite the portability of all their equipment, and these military Predators that are so powerful that you don't need the others, you can just spam the military types.

IMO, the Predators should be less class based than the other species.

The Predators could have different classes with different abilities with weapons, but generally speaking Predators should all have long range weapons + melee weapons.

The Predators should be based on XP - you use points to bring a Predator into the hunt, and this Pred starts at level 1. As he fights he gains XP with his weapons and earns points towards upgrades for HIS weapons. Increasing a level allows a Predator to do more damage with his weapons (implying greater skill/accuracy with their usage).

I'm unsure of what I think of the Shrine. It feels somewhat different to the other species who all revolve around one member of their species - but I honestly think some sort of Elder or hunt Overseer or whatever you want to call it could be preferable.

This overseer would essentially be a Predator with full XP, the most advanced weapons, and a Predator with access to the ship, whom can give permission to other Predators to join the hunt.

In terms of classes I guess you could have Predators that are better with some weapons and worse with others, and whose arsenal varies.

You could have a "crowd control" class that has a Smart Disc, Dual Shoulder Cannos (fire weaker shots are more targets?) and the Combistick.

A melee class - that is at his best with wristblades, combistick, and starts with whatever other melee weapons you could have, and only has a standard shoulder cannon for long range.

A sniper class that employs the Speargun and has a longer cloaking field (the cloaking field could also be something that can be upgraded).

I'd honestly give the Predators the biggest overhaul in terms of gameplay. They also shouldn't get points for screwing around with hopeless animals like oswocs. As a result the Predators play like conquerors fighting for resources.

I don't really have all that many thoughts on the humans... I don't find them too bad, but in the higher difficulties they are so underpowered they are impossible to play with offensively (but then again, that's really only against the Predators and their stupid f**king Hydras) so take that as you will.

Come to think of it, the humans and the method with which they gain money is absurd. Killing earns you almost zippo, and the ATMOs don't come back. I'd rework that. Just as the Aliens can harvest regenerating resources, so should the humans.

The game was AW...........................SOME!!! I find the game adicting, especualy the Alien campain. however I do agree the game should have been for PC then counsel systems. who ever thought of putting the game for Xbox and PS2 needs there ass shot off. I'm not kidding. its verry hard for me to understand what the hell drove the creators to put it on councels. I say alot of people should Email Sierra and tell them to make anymore AvP RTS games on PC. same for all other AvP games.

as for the game... the game was short, the announcer's voice was terrable and seemed to be wooden. the graphics where too cartoonish. and the Population cap was terribly low. as well I agree with DB, the way the hosts determin Alien cast is rediculess. if it was up to me I'd have it like...

the queen lays three types of eggs, Queen Eggs, Drone Eggs, and Warrior Eggs, drone eggs can be upgraded to Warrior eggs and Queen eggs. and you will only resault with a runner when a Drone facehugger empregnates a four legged animal. Warriors will resault in human hosts. Predalien will resault with Drone or Warrior facehuggers impregnating a Predator host.

Enjoyed. Lack of multiplayer was a severe hindrance to such, though. While I definitely agree there needs to be more console A/P games, I really think we need a good AVP RTS for the PC.

I read once about a StarCraft mod with Alien/Predator/Marine sprites, and it had pictures of a few of the sprites, but I never could find where to download it. Anyone have this by any chance?

The one thing I found rather sad about this game was that there wasn't a "randomization" option in which a map would be made at random for each of the three factions with a difficulty setting for easy, medium, hard, and Chaos/Hell. That could have added a great deal of a replay factor to the game, considering the graphics weren't exactly top notch it wouldn't have been hard to do. But all in all I did love this game.  ;D

Opinions on Extinction

By Lie1295

I think that's it was a well thought out game lots of different and unseen units and abilities, with a rock paper scissors type lay out to it. I didn't see that at first but after 4 months of continuous play and I mean continuous I played that game every day not so much now but still once a month if I can.

Marines = Rock

Alien = Paper

Predator = Scissors

Marines have the synthetics that's gets past the cloaking of predator and its one of the cheaper units plus the range and attack strength of most marines means you could just use attack move and stop when to many units are heavily damaged have about 3 medics, 2 com techs and 2 synthetics the rest infantry, smartgunner(flamethrowers more for vs'in aliens) whatever you like but when vs predators have those core units and your gonna be fine for the most part anyway.

Alien is simple upgrade drones and uses them to kill everything or let them get one hit on a host before the hp hits 0 to make the host cystic and any transbreed alien cystic. Alien warrior does 20 damage that's fixed it can only do 20 damage (on normal anyway) even when vs'in hydra's and blaze's but when vs'in a spear master is different it does less than 10 damage. If you have played the game you know that their attack rate isn't slow, that and there upgrade I'll keep it simple their upgrade is AWESOME!!! They die, spray acid everywhere (not that much damage but its a plus that can kill enemies) come back to life with half health in the case of a cystic's is 200 hp a horde of warrior's and drones is perfect for taking out humans

Predator... ^_^ spear masters and brawler's can knock back (the spear master only when vs'in more then one enemy in close combat) all transbreeds but not the predalien. All transbreed except the predalien do between 4-9 damage on a spear master making the spear master a perfect pick for a hive assault hydra's do more damage on aliens, exosuits and synthetics. The blaze can stop the warrior's upgrade from being used because they die on fire and are unable to come back to life and drone cant stand up to its attack long enough to kill it if not in a high enough number. Predalien's may gain more hp but the lack of defense means you could easily kill a horde of 750 or less hp predalien's with 1-2 hyrda's because hydra's do more damage on aliens and predalien's have the lowest defense of all the adult aliens their no match for them, plus the range and medi-ket and if their upgraded

In my opinion all these little things that you pick up while play'in the game determine its worth and there is so much more that i could say but this for me is keeping it short;

I love Aliens vs Predator Extinction and if there was a AVP:E 2 coming out there isn't a force of earth that could stop me getting it

PS ravagers can destroy my whole theory ^_^

I luv AVP: E and if they make a second one they should take there time on it and make it really good and with alot of unit because on know this next gen system can handle lots of units.

Fox could really have milked the shit out of this if they advertised and put more thought into it.

Look at Star Wars: Empire at War. That was so well-received it got an expansion pack that was alright too.

Pretty poor.

For one thing, I don't know when I've seen a game --- ever have you complete a final mission, & then just says, "Game over." No FMV sequence for your species winning, no written report on what happened & how you won, not even a, "Congrats" on-screen --- just ends dead.

Uniquely crap.

I didn't think the RTS game idea was fitting for the series  :-\

I agree with you on the Predators part, but from the movie Aliens I can actually see allot of RTS potential. The Alien attacks en masse, and has a Queen etc. The Humans on the other hand have a squad and veichles etc.

The game could've been better, but I liked it anyway.

I got up to 100 aliens on level 5

EDIT:

JAJA, yeah, i can have 130... but i think that... 1 warrior, 1 Queen and 5 eggs (7), 54 Aliens the are in the jails (54), so the queen, the eggs and the warrior are too (54 - 7), and 38 Aliens i create with the Queen, but i was upgraded the Egg and i can have much more, i can have 50, 60 or 65 in each level :/ i think is my game XD

I loved the game for what it was. But it could have been so much better. I hope that they one day make a new AvP RTS game. It could easily kick ass if done right.

I really liked the game to be honest but it felt a bit unfinished largely due to the fact it had no offline 'skirmish' mode of sorts, which could have been used to continue game time after the 3 campaigns were finished.

Horrible.. a cheap man's version of an RTS with AvP in mind..
I hated having a "small" cap limit on the predators I made.. If I have to play an RTS for the life of me.. I'd play StarCraft.. but still, good thing I don't have that game anymore too..

For all it's not-so good graphics, AvP E was simple and rather enjoyable to play. I've still got my copy for Xbox and play it every now and then. Someone be a good sport and create a new AvP RTS.  :D
