Title: Predator 4K Releases and new Steelbooks
Post by: RidgeTop on May 22, 2018, 03:33:46 PM
Looks like we'll be getting some new releases of the trilogy around the time of The Predator. Don't know if the 4K covers are final or not, but I'm pretty sure the Steelbooks are. This comes by way of FilmArena for a Czech release. But we'll likely see these or similar releases here to promote the new film.

Woah, good find RidgeTop. Never expected to get Predator in 4K before the Alien films.

They've also got The Predator 4K set for 6th December.

Thanks man, surprised they'd already have a blu-ray release date for the new film, though I would expect a home release before the year's end. And yeah it really is about time we got a 4K release for the Alien and AVP films.

Can't wait! Although not keen on Wolf being on the PREDATOR 2 cover instead of City Hunter.

Yeah... they did the same thing with the Ultimate Hunter Edition. Doesn't quite look as bad on this Steelbook IMO.

Is that Dec 6th for the new film? Is that not quite fast for a bluray to come out after a films release?

It'd be about 3 months. Just about as fast as Covenant's release. Might not be final though.

Anyone notice that the classic predator has the AVP scar on his helmet ? Also why is wolf on predator 2's cover ? They are not very accurate representations of the films in question are they ? ???

I am from Kazakhstan, and in video stores, we had Predator 2 DVD with this cover somewhen in 2007, I don't know why it happened, but they used this cover for at least 10-11 years. I guess just the design department had assignment and didn't care much for the actual accuracy. That happenes with movie covers :)

Yeah azamultic , I guess , my old predator 2 dvd has the predator 2 mask on the cover , it's pretty sloppy when you think about it , considering how much these guys are probably paid by fox. You would of thought it wouldn't be too difficult to actually get the characters right. And why are they using hot toys figures ? Maybe I'm reading too much into it but It's little things like this that make me question how much love 20th century fox actually have for the franchise.

I dont' think you need to take it this personal, these franchises are just products, it has some art+entertaining, a lot of fans, but in the end of the day it's a product. And I personaly think that when they give assignments probably deadlines are super tight so designers and workers just don't have much time to be anal abouth things. Using hot toys and statues is a good refrence. When I am modeling Predator, I use all kinds of refrences, cosplay, statues, toys, fan art, concepts, others people 3d models. Because f you will stick your self to actual production stills and screenshotes of movie and BtS footage, you really limiting your self on a refrence department. It's not like these cover designers of DVD rerelease getting actual actor in the real suite for photoshooting, or actual props in their office(I think). They getting assignment in the morning and by the end of the day boss of DVD department or publishing need to have covers ready. It's my thoughts. And I am sure the heads of 20 century not thinking that using official statues or toys as ref for the cover is so offensive to fans  ;). They probably will be shocked how we are anal about mandibles and little things like using toys for the cover or using Wolf for Predator 2 cover ;D

Yeah sure , I get you bro , they have a deadline etc , but surely I quick google search is all it takes if you are not sure which character is which , imo it's just laziness , take a bit of pride in what you are putting out there and make it right , I suppose what I'm getting at is I couldn't see other studios making blunders like that. Can you imagine Pixar putting bullseye or Jesse on a toy story 1s dvd cover ? when they only appeared from the second one onwards ? Because I can't. Or doctor octopus appearing on the first Sam raimi's Spider-Man film cover even though he was in the second ? Very unlikely, I just feel that fox are so sloppy with their franchises , compared to other studios.

To be honest I cannot debate on that subject because I am not too aware of all covers of Sony, Paramaunt, Disney Pixar products. For me I think a lot of people frustrated with 20 entury fox fo a little bit failing on your(I mean your and other people on this forum ) favourite franchise, and it's why 20 century fox getting so hated in this forum. I am not saying they not decerving it, but I do think it's a normal thing in movie industry, it's just we reacting so strongly because it's connected to alien, predator universes. I am sure if we will check on Spider Man forum we will see a lot of hate on Sony too, and I am sure fans there has big reasons and very minor ridiculous reasons (like mandibles) ;)... Pixar to me is a little bit off comparising, because they have much less movies then 20 Century Fox, I mean they are 50 years younger then 20 Century. Don't take me wrong, I am not happy with the product 20 Century Fox giving us lately, but I do think that a lot of Fan's rant actual comming from subjective frustration than from objective understanding of the reality of Industry.

Post by: ELDERCLANLEADER on May 23, 2018, 02:38:38 PM
I get what your getting at but ultimately this one rare time I have to disagree , I think 20th Century Fox are one of the worst studios who just make a quick bunch without much care on the quality, there's zero quality control the way there is at other studios and they have earned the hate lately imo , it's like there's no sense of pride anymore in their franchises or the quality on what they are putting out, that's why I hope the Comcast/Disney take over will happen. Because I find disney to take their content and reputation quite seriously. I mean the last film's 20th century fox put out imo that had any clout was the new planets of the apes. When I compare Fox to other studios and how they treat their franchises , there's things that just don't happen at other studios , there's a sense of pride in what they are putting out there and it shows , even a Disney poster or dvd cover has a bit of thought put into it , there are things at Fox like leaked scrips, photos and anything in between  , and overall it's just sloppiness in general. I'm not saying it doesn't happen at other studios , it does , but it's a lot rarer than fox , fox have some sort of consistency of leaking the whole film before it's even released ,  I mean when I think of predator a lot of the good stuff doesn't even come from fox , it comes from dark horse. What does that tell you ?

I see your point Elder, to be honest I can't debate here. I am not into movie industry anymore as I used to be, so I don't have much valid information about 20 century fox and other studios.  ;)

Predator is really due a proper Quadrilogy treatment. Something with the love and care that CdL did for Alien.

Any word on if the Predator 4K transfer will be a better transfer than the shitty, waxy version we've gotten for the 'Predator' bluray so far? Because if they're just using the same transfer and upscaling it, then it's just going to be as shitty as the bluray but in higher definition so it looks even worse.

Oh, that transfer was nowhere near that bad. There were like 3 or 4 moments where it looks waxy. The rest was crisp.

Good news is that this new version is a 4K mastering from the original negative, meaning it will be far and away the best looking version.

What are the chances they'll do a regular Blu-ray run of the new transfer? I don't have a 4K player or television, nor the spare cash to upgrade, but I'd sure love to finally upgrade my 'Predator' DVD.

Bram Stoker's Dracula and The Fifth Element both came with 1080p versions of the 4K disc on Blu-ray in their new releases.

However with Fox it's hard to guess;
Neither Prometheus or it's sequel were true 4K releases, Prometheus was packaged with the same blu-ray disc we've been getting since 2012, Covenant's Blu-ray was notably inferior to the 4K, not just by virtue of it being lower detail but also the colour timing was different.

It's a bit of a draw of straws when it comes to Fox if I'm honest, they might just package the UHE with the 4K disc and call it a day, or we could finally get a worthy standard Blu-ray that's simply the compressed 4K. At this time we don't know.

Really?

The 4K of Predator makes all others obsolete just by existing. Especially since of the two releases we have, one is barely better than the DVD and the other is DNR'd into oblivion loosing tons of texture and detail across the film.

Got the Trilogy today from Amazon, watched through the first movie... It's so much better than the 08 version... Do yourself a favour when you watch it... Right after you finish, throw in the 08 version (or UHE version) if you have it, it looks SO bad in comparison... Predator in 4K is GLORIOUS...

Little bonus bit, I noticed the inside of the packaging of the UK boxset has a cool bit of art I hadn't seen before... Enjoy

Is the regular Blu-Ray just the UHE repackaged? Or are they the new transfer compressed to 1080p?

This is something I'm curious about as well.

And unfortunately not. Per Digital Bits -

QuoteThe package also includes the film on Blu-ray Disc. Unfortunately, this isn't a newly-mastered Blu-ray edition, created from the new 4K scan. It's the exact same Ultimate Hunter Edition Blu-ray that was released in 2010. That means it's been scrubbed to within an inch of its life with DNR, so much so that everyone looks like a plastic G.I. Joe doll. It's rubbish... except that it features a very nice package of extras. Those include the same audio commentary with McTiernan, the text commentary with Lichtenfeld, and the following additional features:

Oh well, I was gonna buy these for my brother. He doesn't have 4K but I thought he'd appreciate a new BD that was better than the last release. If this is the case then feck it. My wallet's closed.

QuoteWhile the presentation of Predator 2 lets the AV side down a bit, the original Predator is the one that really matters to movie fans. And with that Fox has done an excellent job of finally giving us the sort of home video release such a classic film deserves.

In fact, with the two follow-on films not really doing the first film proud, my biggest question where this three-movie collection is concerned is if you wouldn't actually be better off saving yourself a few quid by just getting the solo 4K release of the original film instead.

I'm hesitant on buying either Predator or Aliens in 4k because there isn't any way to fix the film grain issue, now is there? It's just the way films were made back then. What we've got is what we've got. The end.

Plus it's kind of weird to buy a trilogy to then only later buy another movie. I've bought dozens of these duology/trilogy/quadrilogy's in the past and at my ripe old age... i kind of feel like a sucker. I'm happy with my blu-ry and dvd's tbh and I'll wait for The Predator in 4k... well if it's good, of course.

Still it's not just me right? From degrading VHS to DVD was a large step up and from DVD to Bluray was even better but shockingly movies from the 70/80/early 90's don't (to me) get any better with their 4k transfers. However older films oddly do seem better. Is it worth it to buy 4k, in most cases, no but they do seem better.

Give me AlienĀ³ (With fixed compositing, perhaps a hybrid cut) on 4K or give me death.

I always loved to look at the details and how movies were made, So when I got the Blue Ray Predator 2 I was sooo happy, because I could see the ropes they used for making Predator net slide, or the rope which pulled the jamaican gangster with dreads, I only then noticed that they used puppet face for the same Jamaican guy when net slides through his skin. Also I could notice so mush more details and textures on the Predator. So I was really happy to see it on better resolution then my VHS which still exists, but almost unwatchable (because of how many times I watched it). Or look at all the details of the Jungle in the Original one.
Of course it's probably killing the actual final results that creators were aiming for, but because these are my favorite movies, I love to look at all the small details I didn't notice before on VHS.

Soudns great, is there an equivalent of this quality on the Alien films? I really want the four Alien movies and two Predator together in this quality.

Not yet, an Alien 4K cut has been approved this year by Ridley Scott though.
Aliens on Blu-ray is likely the best we're going to get judging from JC's track record, it'll probably be exactly the same colour timing etc in 4K.
He could surprise us and release a  wax sculpture mess with digital transformations.  (Judgment Day 4K)

A3 is anyone's guess, I'd want a new intermediate cut with fixed compositing.
(More on the side of the Assembly Cut, trim some of the fat.)
The theatrical cut nor the assembly cut is the best that could be made of the editing and pacing of that film.
It would still be the longest of the three original Alien films at it's best.

Ugh, horrible artwork. Especially if you consider we lern in the movie that the Predator is not after trophies but DNA-juice from the spines of his victims.

Not all Predators, according to Shane Black. So it's just a clan. Yep, I'm holding on to those words in my mighty grip and never letting it go. ;D

Looks like Hot Toys classic predator version 1 body with Scar Predator head from AVP.

That's exactly what it is.
It's bloody awful.

The Scar head I could get over, but the action figure body and
the lack of a Predator CH Mask does it in, instead we get
Falconer for some reason- extremely disappointing when
you consider this is probably the last set we'll ever get -
that will omit "The Predator" unless the next film's called;

PREDATOR 3

Jesus Christ, I hope so.

No good Predator artwork on any Blu-ray steelbook ugh, the best one is just decent, and it's over ten years old.
