In the book? If I remember rightly it follows the script and he's crawling up the tunnel along with the Queen and some Aliens, the explosion goes off and takes them all out. Scar finds Grid's body on the surface (it's who he gets the finger to blood Lex from).

Do they ride up the Queen in that? I think they do in one of the scripts.
