QuoteOne of the things I love about the pic of Stanton and co further up is that it makes it starkly clear when A L I E N was made: at Shepperton in 1978 when the only other film in production AFAIA was a soft porn flick called Playbirds starring Mary Millington. A L I E N neatly sidestepped the fashion trends of its age and created a look that filtered into fashion over the following years. Another plus to the original.Unmatched in its look, for sure. Dark Star with a mean budget!

No arguments there! The yellow colour definitely gives it more of a Foss feel. I don't know how I'd feel about it in the film though - I'm quite used to the grey.
Quote from: MrSpaceJockey on Jun 23, 2015, 08:49:32 PM
Are you sure it wasn't just a copper sort of coloring? That's what it looks like to me (and it doesn't look like the same shade as the yellow Nostromo anyway), and it fits the rest of the metal all over the scene setting.
Even though the Nostromo was originally painted yellow, some parts were still left gray. I don't see any logic in the model makers painting the retracting pistons of the landing leg with yellow.
Quote from: MrSpaceJockey on Jun 23, 2015, 10:20:46 PM
No offense, but I'm not 100 percent sold, just because the same things under different lighting tend to look like different colors. So while it may not be painted gold, I'm not quick to say it's painted yellow.
Not to mention the exterior legs look grey or silvery as well (though one could argue that the pieces of the ship above the leg looks yellowish...but once again, it could just be lighting).
QuoteNote that the full scale props were built before Martin Bower built the Nostromo scale model. I would therefore assume that he thought the whole ship should be yellow based on the landing gear?Like I said before though, there's no reason to think that the legs were yellow. They're not even yellow in any of the Ron Cobb concept art.

Yep! I see it now, thanks.
I appreciate your determination in this discussion, and excuse my stubbornness, but I don't think that's a yellow paintjob so much as a yellow stripe, with a number on it. I've sometimes browsed boards on propsummit.com and come across their discussions on the nitty gritty intricacies on the Nostromo... and here are their replica Nostromo landing legs
For some reason their numbering is black, not white. So maybe it's not completely reliable. Their model also seems to miss the yellow on the piston that connects the "toe" to the main 4 cylinders, however...but that seems to be it, in terms of the yellowness, both on the model and in that still.

Quote from: Corporal Hicks on Mar 30, 2016, 07:55:52 AMI remember reading that scene in the Alan Dean Foster novel, shame it never officially made it the screen (as in the movie and not just a bluray bonus). Burke totally deserved his final end.

Quote from: HuDaFuK on Mar 31, 2016, 07:46:43 AMThat and the brevity of the scene,it would have been good to see Burke squirm some more, but the place was about to blow.
I like how the scenes plays out. Giving him the grenade and forcing him do it himself seems to hit just the right level of cruelty.
The big issue I have is it's just not very well acted from Reiser, no offence to him.

I disagree. I think it would be in keeping with her character. She saves Burke earlier when Hicks want to finish him off. She's not exactly the vengeance type. It rings true with her killing Dallas.

They made three, one full scale and two at progressively smaller scales for forced perspective, but they looked a little different to the ones in that wide beach shot. As you say, probably a matte, but it's a bloody brilliant one.
QuoteIn a nod to other cinematic landscapes, matte painter Paul Lasaine added to his painting of the Fiorina refineries [image at the top of the page] distant towers styled after the stacks from Blade Runner's famous 'Los Angeles 2019' opening shot – details which you're unlikely to have a chance of spotting in Alien 3 due to the overlapping effects and the diminutiveness of the painted towers. Allegedly, the Tyrell Pyramid structure is also in there, somewhere. An obvious similarity with another cinematic alien world is Fury's twin suns – perhaps a tip of the hat to Star Wars' Tattooine sunset. The shores of Fiorina were filmed on the dreary Blast Beach at Seaham and at Blyth Power Station – perfect for the planet's monochromatic landscape, and was apparently shot by Jordan Cronenwerth [Blade Runner again] before he left the production.
"It was a terrific looking spot. There had been a colliery nearby and they had dropped all their slag onto the beach. So the sand was black and the water had a real brackish look to it."
~ Rich Fitcher, Boss Effects Co-Supervisor.

I went though the Aliens LaserDisc archive a while back and learned some interesting trivia about that poster - it was designed by Cameron himself, but was never actually used at the time of release (the plain black one with the Aliens logo was the film's theatrical poster). It's only since that it's become so widely used.
Quote from: HuDaFuK on Jul 15, 2018, 09:51:51 AMI like this alternate poster design. I think it may have been used to promote the SE version of the film? When the SE was released in 1991/92, I remember this poster was everywhere.Quote from: Corporal Hicks on Jul 14, 2018, 11:33:12 AM

An audio similar to the nostromo logs and dlc recordings from isolation would be fantastic. Kind of a documentary of what the characters were thinking and the things we didn't see on film. Alas, it would have to be without Harry now. Rest his soul.

Esperanza wasn't the leader of Val Verde. He was just a drug dealer. That's why he got deported to the US, and is flown there on what appears to be a Val Verde military plane by what appear to be Val Verde soldiers.
Quote from: Voodoo Magic on Jul 24, 2019, 04:56:19 PMOn the television news when Col. Stuart is doing his naked exercises.
"Security was tight today at Escalan Airport in the Republic of Valverde where government authorities report that deposed General Ramon Esperanza will be delivered for immediate extradition to the United States.
"Only two years ago, General Esperanza led his country's army in a campaign against Communist insurgents, a campaign fought with American money and advisers.
"Esperanza's fall from power caused ripples not only in his country's recent election, but closer to home, as well, when high-ranking Pentagon officials were charged with supplying him with weapons despite the Congressional ban. But mounting evidence that Esperanza's forces violated the neutrality of neighboring countries made Congress withhold funds, funds which Esperanza is accused of replacing by going into the lucrative business of cocaine smuggling.
"Although Esperanza was removed as Commander In Chief earlier this year, the agreement to extradite him was only reached yesterday, and Washington insiders say it was a phone call that made it happen."

I think the horror was well presented on film. More show could cheapen it.
I wonder how fast corpses would decay in a hot, humid environment like that. Not to mention if xenos crap in the vicinity. Are there any pests that survived travel on supply runs etc.? Could there be maggots or rats on LV-426? Or native microbes? I doubt there were flies since they weren't buzzing around the soldiers.

Could well be. Her hair looks a bit different and it would have been a bit risky for a principle cast member to climb down a ladder one-handed while holding a burning torch in the other!

I don't think it'd work that way. Even if there was a tool that saves linked images, you have to manually go into the code of IG posts to rip the image URL out. You're not linking directly to IG images. I don't think he'd want that kind of function anyway. We don't want to save every single image being linked to here.

I believe both arms were removed at the studio as there is a picture online somewhere of the Derelict in Bob Burns's garden and both arms are intact. I don't have the picture on me at this time sorry. The below picture is an old picture of the Derelict being sold at an auction. I can't remember what year the auction took place:

Not sure who or where the Derelict ended up. Back when Dennis Lowe, Jon Sorensen, and Simon Deering were active on the old Alien Experience message board a few members tried to locate the prop but I don't think they had any luck.

Very nice! According to JW Rinzler's, The Making of Alien, Giger originally wanted the entire landscape to be biomechanical.
In the film, the landscape mostly looks natural but in these shots you can see perhaps some efforts were made into making it look biomechanical with the mechanically shaped, ribbed tubing snaking across the entire landscape, (not just in front of the derelict as seen in the film).
Quote from: Elmazalman on Aug 27, 2022, 11:11:00 AMAlso, going by your posted shot of the Nostromo miniature landing/take-off, the planet's colour was originally an orange/rust colour (as seen in the comic book adaptation), before settling for the more ominous blues and greys.

Yes, he was head-bitten before the lead was poured you just don't see it, unfortunately, as the scene was trimmed in editing. Below are the head casts of Dillon. The red head cast is the one used for the head-bite:(https://imgbb.com/)

Agreed 100%! I would love to see the original gory 'x-rated' cut before it was decided to tone down the graphic gore, etc. Especially from, as you mentioned, Parker's death and Brett's death scenes as well as various other stuff. I was reading an old interview with Yaphet Kotto recently who was asked about the first time he saw Alien. Yaphet said he was shocked on how much stuff was cut or not included and would often pester Ridley saying "When are you going to cut the movie properly?"
Good old Yaphet

Same. The director's cut was definitely a missed opportunity with some questionable edits. The release of the x-rated cut was teased a handful of times in various magazines which always got my hopes up. The director's cut could have been much much more. I never thought they could release an extended version of Alien 3 but they did many years later. So, maybe one day Alien will get the same treatment...fingers crossed.

I saw the DC twice at the time, and enjoyed the additional material - but was hoping for (much) more. The amount of previously-unseen material in the later released 2003 Quadrilogy set only confirmed how much more material could've been used. Definitely a missed opportunity.

Quote from: Kradan on Oct 02, 2022, 11:19:49 AMI would like to know why did you find it disappointing @Elmazalman
Quote from: SiL on Oct 02, 2022, 11:09:44 AMI really liked the cocoon scene. And the crab crawl. I was a bit disappointed some of the other scenes were only presented in their master shots, like the crew talking about what to do after Kane dies, or that we only see Kane when the crew wakes up.
Seeing the snippets of extra Alien footage is always a treat though.
Quote from: TC on Oct 02, 2022, 02:03:36 PMI liked the cocoon scene too, but as shot, I think I can see why they left it out of the original cut. The lighting was less than successful, and probably the sculpted design too, in that you can't really tell what you're looking at unless you have time to really examine the frame. Especially the Brett-egg. I don't think it was painted in metallic colours, it's just the glaring highlights from a gloss surface that makes it look that way. Probably Derek Vanlint, the DP, would have liked more time to light it better.
As far as the crab walk goes, it's great that Scott was experimenting with different ways to hide the man-in-a-rubber-suit effect, but just like the test of Bolaji Badejo creeping through the unfinished Nostromo set (that I know everyone's seen so I won't bother linking from YouTube), you can instantly tell there's a human actor inside the costume from all the little nuances of weight-shifting that Badejo does. We're all so familiar with how the human body moves it's pretty hard to fool the human observer.
Same with the out-take of the alien throwing Parker against the wall then stepping in to finish him off. It's subtle, but instantly recognisable from Bodaji's movements that he was completely blind when he had to step forward, as he kind of shuffled one foot forward to feel out with his toe where Yaphet was lying in case he tripped over him.
So, interesting out-takes, but they were wise to edit them out.
