I always thought in that scene where Dutch is hugging a tree and the Predator is right behind him that he should be able to smell him.
All that dripping and slime on them, mouth full of spit etc, that's bound to smell foul, right?
I bet Predators have a distinctive smell about them. Do the comics ever mention that?
Likewise, do Predators have a sense of smell? Jungle Hunter should have been able to smell Dutch. Days without a shower in the jungle? You don't need infrared to spot him.
I don't know if you've been in a jungle but there's a lot of ambient smell in there. Dutch would smell like mud, of which there is plenty, and the Predator probably isn't going to smell much worst than the composting organic matter around the place.
I do imagine Predators would not smell nice, though.
Why? Maybe they do use Old Painless Spice ;) ;D

There is no overt mention of them smelling bad. So I would assume no, they don't. Perhaps that evolved an ability to mask their scent naturally, or maybe the body netting does it?
They smell hot and musky probably 🥵

:P ::)
I always figured a bit of a rotting meat smell, given their stated diet and the amount of skinning they do.

Perhaps we can do this for the Predator?
Like rotten/sweaty crotch leavin's, I imagine.
JH got a bath when he was chasing dutch though, so the general viscosity of his assness was somewhat reduced.
I would argue.., probably. Predator 2 kind of addresses this with how the OWLF tracked City Hunter.
And really they'd probably stink from collected skulls since we've seen them still bloody or meaty while on their person which can't smell good especially since they operate in hot environments generally. Just a mixture of dead bodies and the Predator's own body odor. McKenna in The Predator is also taken aback when he smells some of Fugitive's blood so there's also the possibility the blood might also smell.
I'd imagine they would have a sense of smell but given they'd be dealing with dead bodies all the time I doubt foul smells are a big deal. It's probably weirder for them to notice something smelling good. Man could you imagine how weirded out a Predator would be if it walked into a bakery?

Given the lack of a nose, and the rarely-sighted snakelike tongue, I'd guess no sense of smell but a highly perceptive ability to taste the air.

I get what you're saying from a biological (and behavioural) point of view, but in practical terms that seems like splitting hairs to me. The ability to "taste" objects through the air amounts to a sense of "smell" in my books. The two aren't entirely divorced in humans anyway.
Fair point. I'm driving at a Jacobson's Organ or something like one, but it's not at all hard to argue that the end result is essentially the same thing regardless of the presence of nostrils.
I guess the real elephant in the room is the fact that they tend (and try) to wear a mask at all times, meaning they aren't going to be relying on scent as a sensory tool under ideal circumstances. Our atmosphere might even have such a strong smell of its own (when compared to their native one) that they can't discern much through it anyway.

I just remembered the skill has a weird notch in it. I remember some debate about whether they had nostrils as a result of the skull. So maybe they have it but just not in a place you can immediately see? It's not present on the Super Predator skull however. Though given they are built different that might be a trait they lack if they did have nostrils.

Could just as easily be a spot where soft tissue attaches to the bone. Certainly doesn't look any deeper than the notches for the quills.
That was always my assumption, hence obsessing over the snake tongue stuff instead.
Out Of Universe, it's also clearly just an aesthetic choice to make it skull-ier.
However your point about the masks does stand and I have no good off the cuff answer to it.

They probably smell like a seafood restaurant.
First of all, what a great idea for a thread !
Never given this a thought before but I'd imagine Predators smell like rotten meat or something similarly disgusting. After all, they're not vegetarians
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Predator's odor is described in Predator South Sea China and from what I remember reading, it's bad.
The Tim Lebbon novels portray them as not smelling bad, just musky.
I imagine that they would smell frighteningly foul. We've never been given any indication in the movies that they bathe or clean themselves. Plus they spend substantial amounts of time covered in grime, so... idk, my money is on them stinking pretty bad.
All this talk about smells is going to make me puke 🤮 lol 😂

I think I remember something about that.
it should smell like "You-me- tonight- no underwear".
Two aspects spring to mind with regards to a species' odour: camoflage and chemical-social signaling.
Going with the look of their reptilian skin; has anybody stuck their nose on a reptile? They don't really smell (unless they're furious and flinging something foul, or they've been sat in their own waste). For the purposes of both hunting and evading predators, it serves them to smell of their environment.
The case for any kind of odour strong enough for humans to detect, with our rubbish olfactory senses, would be social signalling. If they can't control this consciously, it wouldn't serve them well whilst hunting.
However, playing with rotting meat will absolutely ensure you're detected from a mile away. They do spend time dressing and polishing the kills they want to keep, which would take care of the rotting smell aspect.
Given that they're supposed to be an intelligent species, I would be disappointed if they hadn't thought of these issues.
I bet their balls get sweaty though.
Thanks, now I'm gonna go vomit for an hour
Alive Predators must have an distinctive odour of muddy swamp, crab's penise and a slight fishlike whiff of sophisticated rotten meat which they eat further supplemented with touch of their bodily excrements. I bet the meat is very crunchy. :-X
Well, Prey answers this question seeing how
Spoiler
the bear smells him. The Predator itself sniffed a cigar so it has a sense of smell too.

Having an air-tight mask on would have prevented that.
It was clearly having some sort of gas piped in there.

I meant Dutch being able to smell the Predator.
Perhaps he actually did. They do not lack for presence. As for whether they can smell, Feral indicates he can, when he picks up the tobacco.
I remember the AVP books saying they have a musky smell to them but their reptilian look makes me think they have an equivalent smell to a dirty turtle tank.
I think it's a safe bet that Predators don't smell like Coco Chanel No.5
If I remember right, the Rage War books described them as smelling faintly like cinnamon if you got close enough to them, and for some reason I liked that idea.
I would expect them to smell something like Jerry Lambert's underwear.
Anytime?
Pussyface?
Feral?
