Title: How obsessed of Alien/Predator are you?
Post by: bobby brown on Apr 18, 2018, 07:53:08 PM
Sup, my guys, and gals.

This is not a cry for help or anything, I enjoy my life but I am curious about how my obsessive fandom affects me. Alien has been a part of my life almost as long as I can remember. HOW can you not be utterly sick of aliens by now?
Every day, SEVERAL TIMES, ALIEN ALIEN ALIEN. :P

Currently, I visit these board several times a day, even during work breaks. I'm googling and youtubing alien related stuff all day

I have been a fan of aliens since around 6 I think. It has come and gone through periods, but the last ten years its been nonstop.
I just never get sick of it. "ALIEN ALIEN ALIEN" my girlfriend and I sometimes teases my obsession. the last movie came out a year ago and I still harbor a deep need to discuss it in detail.

I am currently a 26-year-old white male living in Sweden with my girlfriend of 6 years. I work hours as a geriatric nurse at an elderly home close by. When I am not needed, I spend my days as stated above.

I have even proposed to "detox" for the next month. (after alien day, and the arrival of my sweet artFX statue) By putting away all my alien related stuff, and try my hardest to stay away from this site.

can anyone else here relate?

I've been a fan for about 19 years. In that time, I've had gaps of moderate to low fandom, for example after the first AvP movie was released. I also remember a post from AvPGalaxy at that time along the lines of "The movie was very bad, I am done with this shit".

Currently, I experience a surge of fandom and trying to catch up with some books and games I have missed. Sadly, it doesn't feel the same as it used to though.

I think the highpoints in the franchise in the long years have been Alien: Isolation and the Alien Quadrilogy box set (back in 2003) with all Special Editions.

Alien/predator also has been a part of my life for as long as i can remember. From playin wiv the kenner figures, to watchin the films daily and having my mom tell me "you hav killed these films off" 😂.

I wouldnt say it was a obsession its a passion. Loving alien also developed my skills in artwork.. I loved the fine detail in HR Gigers alien n to draw that on paper over n over again it really helped me progress.. Its beautiful.
It is something to be celebrating i think.. If i ever have kids i will be sure to let them experience alien/predator :)

Obsession? Close.. ;) Though I do go in streaks of enthusiasm. Where every day at some point I'm reading about ALIEN,watching something related to it. Checking this website multiple times. I will be immersed in it.

Then...nothing. I will move on to other interests. I always come back to it. ;D  I took a year off at least this last time maybe 2? Some of the members who were frequent poster's are gone Maledoro. Some of the folks from AlienExperience. Lots of new blood. :) It keeps it interesting. And as always I'm amazed at the degree of knowledge members have here. I'm not sure the exact year I became a fan? Before ALIEN 3 was released.

The main reason I'm drawn to it...the characters, the genre and the ALIEN itself "wondrous". "The perfect organism". Always new worlds to explore & new characters. I'm continually learning and being introduced to various ideas and opinions about this franchise I love. Also research. I love researching it. Yes its fiction but its fun. ;D

And Ridley Scott. Big fan of him. Dan O'Bannon and Giger's creation too. Pretty much ALL things ALIEN. 8)

Normally I go into fanboy mode when there is new stuff coming up. The time I was the most into it was when AVPR was coming out, I spent quite some time searching for stuff related to it, it was why I started reading these forums, but again I was 12 at that time and didn't have to deal with more important stuff. The last movies weren't such a big deal so I'm not really excited about The Predator and if Ridley will continue whatever the hell he is trying to do this time.

Lately I got more into the franchise when the last games were about to be released, AVP2010, A:CM, ALIEN: Isolation. Also when I read the the first Rage War novel I got a little obsessed on how the story would continue, good times. Unless a new game or a novel which can add a lot to the lore is announced, my enthusiasm will remain neutral.

Honestly it depends on what day you ask me. I go through a cycle where I'm mega obsessed with one thing for a month or so and then I switch back to another fandom for a bit.

Yeah, lately I have been all about Weyland Yutanis logos, and graphic elements from the various films. I have ordered a bunch of patches to pimp my jacket with.

Conclusion: The wings are the coolest.

If I wasn't such a huge wuss I'd have a tattoo. Either a coiled CB like the Alien 3 poster (Queen or normal) or I'd have an Alien coiled up too. Maybe even the AvP logo we're using on a lot of our socials atm.

Actually on the thing about tattoos, I do see a lot of alien tattoos. Especially near military bases. Which isn't surprising I suppose.

I saw the design of the Giger's monster as a kid and it always stuck with me because, well it's fairly interesting looking. Not just that but, the whole life cycle was fascinating to me, probably because I understood little of the subtext. Caught the movies on TV when I could, and played the games. Just thought "I can't wait what new interesting things hold for the future!" and nothing came. It all sort of just looks the same, there's not much to a monster movie anymore, which is fine but pretending its more than it is, is what I hate about modern "monster movie" Hollywood today, they're so focused on these photoshop concept monsters that when the script demands that we're supposed to take this as seriously as possible, there's really nothing there in the final product for me to care enough to finish it. I mean I'm sure there's a lot you can do with digital technology today to do something unique but there's a studio behind anyone at any given time poking your shoulder saying "You can't give the monster a penis for a head"

And where the fun is that anyways

I'm beating a dead horse a billion people have beaten before though. I just, love Alien because I understood it more and more as I grew up, and yet I'm still entranced by the forest of lights and detail the Nostromo has and its lived in look. Everything in the movie is just built for intoxication and design overload that it's hard not to fall in love with the movie.

I like predator a lot, but the whole setting of alien is so fascinating to me that I can't help to love it. The design Giger did for everything is just, so unmatched to this day. The crashed derelict, the biomechanical space jockey space suit, the planet, the costumes, the Nostromo and all its little details inside and out, how you can instantly forget these people are actors and not really pissed off beat up laborers who want to get home

All of it is  just, charming. I don't know much my bias is effecting this and how much rose tinted glasses are coming into play, but I'm hardly the only one

After seeing Alien 3 on VHS at eleven, I spent most of my teenage years obsessed with the franchise. While my passion dipped slightly since there's other stuff in life, I'm still quietly obsessed with the films and extended universe. Two years ago I gave my daughter the middle name of Ripley and my wife talks me out of getting a tattoo of Mike Mignola's art of the Alien.

I have an obsession.

I remember watching the movies when I was 5 or 6 and being absolutely terrified. I'd check under my bed and in the wardrobe for monsters. I'd then go sleep in my parents bed. Yet, in saying that I was always fascinated by it. I remember going to the video store with my parents as they'd rent new releases etc and more often than not, I'd go and find Alien and Aliens just to look at the cover.

Growing up, I always found it challenge to watch the movies (Alien and Aliens) right through. Typically with Alien, I'd struggle to watch the Chest burster scene and Lambert/Parkers demise. In Aliens, I'd always seem to watch until Vasquez death scene.

Now as an adult, I watch the movies (all of them) every 2 or 3 months. Find myself on various Facebook groups, listening to podcasts, playing the games, reading the books and generally ensconcing myself with anything Alien related.

My wife will not sit through any of the films for me, but that doesn't phase me. I think she can piece together all the movies by now!

To me, this series is everything. From being terrified to it now being my happy place. I'm just glad that there are communities of fans that I can relate to.

I'd get Alien tattoos if I could, but I have psoriasis (skin condition) so I don't think I can.

The fascination with the fear is very much my story too. I first saw Aliens when I was 5 after going on the Aliens: Ride at the Speed of Fright ride. We made it up until the chestburster scene and I just cacked my pants and my Dad had to turn the film off. I tried again when I was 7 but same result. But I was still fascinated and obsessed with what little I knew. I slept facedown for 5 years - logic being the chestburster wouldn't be able to come out if my chest was against the mattress.

It wasn't until I was 10 when I walked in on my Dad watching the film that I finally saw it all the way through. I saw what he was just putting on, about-faced and tried to leave the room. He made me stay and face my fears. We watched it in bits over a few days but I remember really wanted to get home from football practice and finish watching it. Then we watched Alien 3(despite Dad's warnings) that night.

For the next few years until I got the Alien Legacy boxset, I would check the TV times every week so I could try and catch any showings on Sky. I eventually managed to record Aliens: Special Edition and Alien on VHS.

QuoteNow as an adult, I watch the movies (all of them) every 2 or 3 months. Find myself on various Facebook groups, listening to podcasts, playing the games, reading the books and generally ensconcing myself with anything Alien related.

Oh, it's the best way! I just wish I had more time to still revisit Alien and Predator really often but still check out all the new stuff! What groups are you part of, if you don't mind me asking?

QuoteTo me, this series is everything. From being terrified to it now being my happy place. I'm just glad that there are communities of fans that I can relate to.

I really enjoyed your story, Shaun. Thanks for sharing.  :)

Ah, that's a shame mate! I'd really like one too but I'm too much of a wuss. Don't think I could cope with the pain of getting one done.

I love hearing stories like that! One of my buddies gave his daughter the middle name Ellen after Ripley. I've gotta try and swing something like that when the time comes. I'm not sure I'll get away with it as I'm quite insistent of being able to name my son after me and my Dad so I can nickname him Trip (for Enterprise).

How obsessed am I?

With Predator? Eh, so-so. I enjoy the movies immensely, but can't watch any of them more than twice a year. I buy and read the novels, and predators haunt my dreams every now and again, was fighting one last night actually. Other than that, Predator is not my #1.

With Alien? It goes deeper. I probably watched Alien 1 & 3 about 30 times each year. All the others I watch maybe 2-3 times a year. I buy and read the novels, and re-read them often enough. The Alien is often in my dreams. It is my favorite franchise, and I've been very verbal with my friends and coworkers that if I ever get a tattoo, it's going to be the WY logo. The only reason I haven't gotten it is because I find tattoos unattractive, and I enjoy my skin the way it is. Nothing personal to anyone on here who has one.

All that being said, I don't think about it all the time. The Alien isn't constantly there. I have work and responsibilities that take up most of my time. But like somebody else said earlier, it no longer terrifies me. It's an immense source of enjoyment and comfort when I've had a rough day, to dive into something Alien. But it's not my life. I do have an authentic Prometheus theatrical poster framed and up on the wall though. So I'm going to see something everyday no matter what.

My excitement for franchises comes and goes. Alien is never gone, though. It's permanently dormant.
Sometimes I even think about the Alien how to fit in other universes. Aliens in Middle Earth living together with Trolls and Goblins in caves or underground. The Federation meeting Aliens on spaceships. Also I think that the Alien wouldn't even stand out in the bar of Mos Eisley. Smoking and drinking together with "Wolfman", "Satan" and "Slughead". Maybe they would, though. All this drooling. ;) When I (try to) play games like Stellaris, I'm only motivated to play it as Alien by using a race mod.
I'm kind of obsessed, I guess.

Alien is my second favorite series, the first 3 movies in particular. Well, only the first 3 movies. But the mythology I was always really into since young days and I'm as much into it as a long time die hard fan can be (Seen Alien 3 first in 92, started getting deeper into the franchise around '94). So as far as Alien, Im a huge fan (of the first 3 movies mainly tho).

Predator? Well, the first movie is a masterpiece. The tension and feel of dread is exceptional. The second film is barely good, and anything after, mostly meh. But the franchise and the predator mythology I always enjoyed and was into, I think the comics did really well with them. But my interest in Predators is nowhere near my interest in Alien, not even the same ballpark
