Title: AVP Legacy proposal (MP built by, and for the AVP community)
Post by: PLEXI on Sep 26, 2010, 01:57:01 AM
I've had this idea for a while now, ever since the first release of the AVP (2010) Demo. The various complaints in regards to the game not living up to expectations or forgetting about past contributions to the series altogether. The strong modding community AVP that has held throughout the years. The release of Mektek's Assault Tech 1 only let this idea grow further.

The idea is to attempt to successfully combine all the things that have made the 3 AVP games worth playing into a single game for the entire AVP community to enjoy.

What we're looking for:
The project is being developed on the UDK,  knowledge of the Unreal editor is essential.

Concept and Production artists

Level designers

Audio engineers! Sound..Music..etc

Character and prop Modelers, Texture artists, and animators

Suggestions and ideas, otherwise how would be know what everyone wants? :P I'll update this post with an overview of the game's core elements when we're done revising it.

...and eventually beta testing... (long ways away)

This is a community based effort, any and all help is welcome. The AVP Legacy forum is currently under construction, I'll post a link once the site is up and running properly.

We switch to the UDK (Unreal Development Kit) based on the Unreal Engine 3.0 (the one that Gearbox is using for A:CM)
If anybody feels useful, please contact me or PLEXI for more informations.

This is a big project in mind. Recreate an alien v predator game for the UDK. good for practice in case A:CM releases mod tools.

Set up a main page at Moddb.com for updates and group access. look forward to joining the group. help out a bit.

so far how many people you got working on the thing?

cause you NEED progress reports this early in the game, just to motivate each other this is some sort of real attempt.

Is there a push moving forward or just waiting for more help right now.

I can help out with model asset building. But first set up a professional list of model's preferably with pictures along with anticipated detailed description. (Poly limit,# of LOD's , output format, texture limits , etc.)
And modelers can check the models off the list as they take responsibility for them.

Here's the link to the project's forum
http://avplegacy.forumotion.net/index.htm
The developer area is currently set to private, so anyone interested in helping should make an account so I can add you to the list. The forum is still under construction as I have not had the time in between school work to devote to it. Just send me a PM to make sure I notice.

QuoteThis is a big project in mind.
Very.
Quoteso far how many people you got working on the thing?
About 8 people, with a mixed bag of skill sets. (Currently only have 3 actually working on anything, the rest are suggesting ideas though.)
QuoteIs there a push moving forward or just waiting for more help right now.
Pushing forward where we can, but we can't do much until we get more people working on the project.

Good to know.  We're still deciding on pretty much everything. That's mainly why I posted here so early... I wanted to recruit as many people as possible asap so we had a good idea of what everyone wants early rather than start releasing builds and receive tons of negative feedback. Also because much help is needed to see this project become a reality.

Sorry for the late reply... I'm extremely sick atm, and it's been making life difficult... >.<

Can't model yet, even though it's been on my to-do-list for the past 10 years, LOL, so I'll have to pass on that. Art I can supply, also textures would be possible with a little help.

Also, rule-sets and story I can provide or help with.

Story? Not plans for MP, a SP will perhaps come and if it is, it'll be based on the AVP2 game that I already re-wrote 2 years ago  ;)
Rule-sets... you mean gameplay and suggestions idea?

You can still suggest anything you want in the 'Idea and Suggestions' section of the board: http://avplegacy.forumotion.net/forum.htm

That's not completely true, as we will have mission based MP maps.  While I wouldn't call it a full blown narrative, the missions need a basic structure to follow.
As for single player campaigns, Le Ceticant as expressed interest in remaking AVP2's campaign, but we can always add more.

And of course, any and all help is welcome.

The 'basic' of the forum is done, you can register it and post in the right boards.
Forum link: http://avplegacy.forumotion.net/

By the way I pop up the the thread, we're seeking for a good coder (preferably with Unreal Script knowledge but not necessary) to work with the engine and the gameplay (implant in coding our thought).

Yes. The idea is to create something completely new for the AVP community.

Story adds to the atmosphere, you need something to adhere the levels to, or else it will be Quake AVP-arena all over again. Story, depth and tension.

Gameplay and rule sets are set in numbers, and I have some idea's to get AvP to function well in a MP environment.

Gameplay define the style of the game. It's unlike Quake-like system... (and it doesn't need a story to give this aspect to the game) it's in fact very far from Quake-like where all opponent rush...
(Character speed are realistic, no push to some ultra high velocity, jump are small, tactic rules the game).

For story feel free to post whatever is in your mind in the forum or via PM / e-mail.

Story is technically not needed at all.  It's possible to build both depth and tension without story.  The project will primarily focus on MP.  Though support for a full single player campaign(s) may be added later.

QuoteBut isn't story one of the downfalls of AVP3? I mean, that it wasn't developed well enough?
But this is nothing like AVP2010. This is not a professional video game developed by an entire studio.  This is just a bunch of AVP fans working with what they can.

The project's primary purpose is to build a functional multi-player, incorporating all the things that we've come to enjoy, and expect from an AVP game. MP is almost always the most played aspect of any game, which is why it's being heavily focused on. This does not mean that the game will not feature SP or a story of any kind.... but that's not nearly as important as a solid engine for MP first, as campaigns or missions can always be added later.

As far as actual story or campaigns go;  right now Le Celticant and Rasirez have expressed interest in remaking the campaigns from AVP2, and adding slight updates. More can be added later.

Quoteso... ambiance of AVP, story of AVP2, and features if AVP2010?
Close, that's on the right track.....and we'll of course be adding new content as well.   :p

Hey, I'm totally cool with using the AVP2 story. Long as it has one, I'm happy (that's pretty much why I play games is for the story)

Well, I see you're handling the UDK, thank you for your proposal, we'll look into it but right now we prefer to create our own assets for the game.
Some news to come for December I think.

I'm posting again to attract attention:
We need you, yes you, fan or not of AVP.
A game can't be made by one man (Oh yes it is in fact, but it would be a slow process and probably a waste of time).
We're seeking for the following people:
-Mapper (Have glue or not with UDK editor)
-Textures designer (Skins, Worlds, and more)
-Models
-Coding

If you have any knowledge with one of the following software:
*3DS Max (3D)
*Maya (3D)
*Blender (3D)
*Photoshop (2D textures)
*Gimp (2D textures)
*Paint Shop Pro (2D textures)
*UDK World Editor
*After Effect (Video Editor)
*Visual Basic Studio C++ (Coding)

You're welcome to apply.

For any suggestion that you may want to provide to the team, I advise you to register on the forum here ( http://avplegacy.forumotion.net/forum.htm ) and to feel free to post whatever you want.

----------------------------------------------

Update time:
We made some progress (in all division) but it's slow since we are hard numbered (2 mappers, 2 - 4 modelers and 1 coder)
I can't talk much about it but we've a pulse rifle so far, I would say, the hard way is behind  ;)

Some real update should come in December.

Nope, but without coder... we won't make it.
So it's simply on 'hold' until we have a coder.

Luckily, my semester ends in a week...  With my new computer parts hopefully arriving soon(still need to try to salvage what is left of my old hard drive).  I should have some free time to resume the project over my summer break.

I will be trying to work on a proof of concept(using the current design doc) for demonstration purposes to try and generate interest.

Hey good luck with the project, it sounds great.  I would register, but I don't really have anything to offer other than traditional art, some photoshop ability, and interesting ideas.

I was thinking about the scope of your project, and maybe it could be helped along by only focusing on a small area?  For example, Survivor was one of the most popular AvP2 game modes, and returned in AvP 2010 as Infestation.  I"m sure most players would love to download a new survivor mode with updated graphics and possibly more options or objectives.

I've always wanted a survivor mode with a large level that opens up as the marines get fewer and fewer, so you have a large area with all marines, then once a few die a new area opens up, then a final area for the last surviving marines, maybe with vents or places to hide/escape?

Just my thoughts.  Good luck and let me know if I can help in any way!

Hello,

As the name Legacy states, this fan game is suppose to take the "things" that made the charm
of previous AVP (AVP 1999, AVP2, AVP2010) and modifications since the community contributed with some great idea, mix them together and we have a game.

We obviously gonna add our own things (some may see it good, some bad) BUT I hardly believe this will involve the capacities to drive an APC or a dropship since it would need very huge maps and so a lot of players > a complex network code which from what I understood is going to be a challenge itself to make 16 players in the same game.

There's a general section where you can subscribe and let us know if you have some idea for the game.
We're always looking forward for new concepts though don't expect to see us adding everything you'll say.
