July’s free update to Predator: Hunting Grounds is here! It seems the majority of the new content is in the way of new customization content. For the Fireteam we’ve got gun shaders and outfit camo.

But the Predators are getting some love with new skin shaders and last month’s early access Samurai Katana and shaders. Not only that, the Alpha Predator class is now free to all players who have hit level 100!

There are over thirty items coming in the free update; New Fireteam Gun Shaders, a Fireteam Outfit Camo, and vibrant Predator Skin Pattern tints make up the majority of the drop.* We are also extremely excited to announce the long-awaited worldwide release of the Alpha Predator and Sickle! Both the Alpha Predator Class and the Sickle can be earned by reaching level 100. And I don't want to forget, but this update also means that everyone can now earn the Predator Katana and Shaders for use.

July’s paid DLC has also been announced. Predator 2 fans, it’s time to rejoice as City Hunter is about to enter the Hunting Grounds, complete with combistick and his wrist rocket!

I am also thrilled to share with you that coming later this month is the third paid DLC. We heard a lot of people in the community ask about this specific Predator since we announced the title last year. We are bringing the City Hunter class to Predator: Hunting Grounds! The City Hunter will come with his classic Combistick and Wrist Launcher for hunting down Fireteams. You will be able to add the City Hunter to your Predator classes and play as the iconic character on July 28.

The new blog post also addressed the lack of new maps or game modes – which have been datamined – and reaffirmed that they are on the way.

We have seen some folks in the community wondering about the new map and mode; rest assured they are still in the roadmap, we just haven't released the dates yet. We will be sharing more information soon. Until then, I will see you in the jungle!

While the new update is mainly a content drop, it does also feature some minor patching.

• General stability fixes
• Implemented EOS invite support
• Fixed crashes related to executions
• Fixed crash related to swapping weapons
• Fixed an issue where the AI would sometimes not be able to detect crouched players that were right in front of them

I don't have this game, neither a PS4 or a PC to play it in some time soon but still I'm very excited about the City Hunter

No new maps huh? I love the customization in the game, but its not more of that that we need right now.

Great news about City Hunter! I had a feeling he might be the next paid DLC given that the data mining of his models seemed to show he was pretty far along. Plus it's City Hunter, so hell yeah! Can't wait to get him!

And free Alpha for everyone is unexpected and great too! I figured they'd be giving NECA's figure code a bit of a longer period of exclusivity than this, but I'm not complaining (about that, at least)! I got the figure a few days ago too, so the timing of that one is great!

The bad side of more new Predators though is exactly what we were all worried about early on; running out of a loadout slots (not to mention the Predator match wait times inevitably going up again). If they're going to make all of these new Predators their own classes rather than just skins they really need to give us more slots. With today's release of Alpha we now have one more Predator than we have space to save a loadout for, and when City Hunter comes out in a couple of weeks it'll be two. And given that everything resets to default if you look at/choose another item (like the shaders or in the fire team's case any weapon attachments you've got on), having to manually change everything around because you've got no space to save it as a custom loadout is going to be a tad tiresome (if you can even remember everything you had on them without constantly having to refer to a screencap).

And while City Hunter and Alpha are great, the lack of anything much on the patching/bug fixes front is a bit disappointing. Those are some very minor fixes, nothing about the long claim/pig eating glitch that can lose a game for you if it happens at the wrong time. Though hopefully those crash fixes are things I was running in to when the Samurai came out last month, and if so that's good.

Needless to say the lack of any new maps is definitely a bit disappointing though. We're three months on from release and still playing the same three we've had since launch. A new map at this point would honestly be a bigger and better deal than any new characters, so the brief "we're working on it" comment is a bit....eh. Hopefully that at least means we might see one next month instead, but the fact that it will be at least another month isn't great.

But still, focusing on the positive, huzzah, City Hunter! And Alpha too! The wait times are going to be horrendous again, but oh well. City Hunter!! ;D

Tho I would prefer a new FT dlc than a Predator one rn to even the wait times

Yeah, I was a little surprised that it wasn't another FT update. I had been expecting Predator 2 November time to coincide with the anniversary but I guess they're not doing that kind of marketing with HG.

Honestly, that's what I think I'm most excited about! Curious to see how they present in it this given as it's only gaming appearance in Primal Hunt was a little on the weak side!

For me it's never not done that. There's never been any sort of "confirm or cancel changes" options with these loadouts, so it always just saves whatever you've looked at, and if you go back to a different weapon you had all kitted out everything is back to default. It really should be like most other custom loadouts in games where you can look at stuff and change things around, but it still saves your previous options unless you specifically tell it to overwrite something you've changed.

Yeah that's true. Hopefully we might get a fix for them then, since right now they seem to be the worst bug in the game, at least assuming that those crashes that were mentioned are indeed the ones that seemed fairly common since the previous patch.

Also something I just noticed is that at the bottom of the blog post it says "**Classic Combistick and Wrist Launcher unlockable to all via gameplay by September 2020".

Going by how they've been releasing things so far this would mark the first time the weapon of a previous month's DLC hasn't become part of the free DLC for the month immediately following it, instead skipping that month to seemingly be part of the free DLC two months later. Given that brief comment that basically said "hey, we hear you, we're working on a new map and mode", I wonder if that might be because August's free DLC could indeed be a new map, and they're saving the combistick and wrist launcher going free for later as a result?

Hmm. I remember Illfonic indicated the Alpha Predator will be later available worldwide at a later date, but I don't recall it being advertised as "early access" to a free item, as Ole-Painless was. So I was expecting a paid DLC.

Yeah, I really believed the City Hunter would come in November too. Perhaps they'll celebrate the 30th anniversary with a game sale by then, or maybe the inclusion of Harrigan. Or, maybe not at all. Guess we'll see.

But the limited amount of custom Predator sets we can save needs to be increased. Scout, Hunter, Beserker, Jungle Hunter, Alpha, Elder, Samurai, City Hunter. There's just not enough slots for a game that has this much customization.

Yeah that's what I mean. There's no way to just switch things round to see how they look without it also saving by default. Though it seems as though some of the Alpha stuff is bugged at the moment anyway where it won't equip any shaders when you first select the new mask and have to back out of the customisation menu and go back in to jolt it into working.

Does this mean crossplay invites are finally a thing?

God I hope they start optimizing this soon

City Hunter looks great from what we can see of him, and the mix n match means we'll be able to make Scout too!

But they really, really need to get on these bug fixes. I just waited twice 10 mins for a Predator match only for it to crash to the home screen both times right after I started attacking.

I'm honestly taken by surprise to how soon City Hunter arrived. I was convinced that to honor the respective anniversaries, the Super Predators and City Hunter would be released along side the releases of their films. Guess this confirms that anything goes here and no one knows what is gong to be in store next.

One thing for sure, I think people want more content that isn't cosmetics. Devs should be focusing more on new game modes and maps, I doubt anyone here or those playing the game is currently demanding cosmetic content. Not to sound ungrateful here or anything either its just that I hear a lot of people already getting a numb tongue to the game due to the fact that gameplay and maps is pretty much the same just with a different set of colored Preds ruining around, with me sharing the same feeling, and I really don't want this to die out so quickly. 

Hopefully next DLC after this will have new Fireteam specialists; come on Royce, Isabelle, and Harrigan. Hell I'll take McKenna too, really want to find out how he fits in all of this. (Though I have an odd feeling its going to be a Dutch 87 DLC skin)

We can't completely blame them. I mean the Alpha Predator was just released but gameplay wise it has the same stats as the Hunter class so at the end of the day its the same maps, same gameplay, technically same Predator but different model. I guess people fear it will be the same case with City Hunter. I personally don't think people would cheese so much if at least the three new maps were released today as there is more substance for them to chew on for a bit until the real gameplay updates role in.

I did, won against two and lost against one Alpha, hence why I said what I said. Additionally you can compare stats in the customization menu, it shows that they are pretty much the same. Hell, Predator main youtuber, Shifologist, pretty much confirmed their stats in his latest video. Additionally, it also depends on the skill of the Predator player too.

Compare to Samurai which is a more refined Berserk with less health buff (makes sense in turns of balance) and Elder (favorite class by the way) which is a Hunter/Scout hybrid, would have been cool if Alpha was a Hunter/Berserk hybrid, now that would be a challenge to face against.

I guess you mean multiple things at once? Mix and match but don't commit? Because just looking at one thing, say different masks on my Alpha, or different skin shaders on my Alpha, I can scroll through them and view how they look without commitment. I back out and boom, back to normal.

Update: Plenty of pissed off people in the groups who shelled out dough to buy the fig just for the code only to find out it was early free access. So it would appear the communication from the Illfonic team on this particular addition could have been much better.

Yeah exactly, you can't mix and match just to see how things look without them being saved. Or like if you have a gun all kitted out with the attachments and skin you want and you want to look at a new shader you just got for a different gun, when you switch to that gun to check it you then have to go back and manually re-attach all the stuff back on to your first gun again because there's no "do you want to save these changes?" message or anything like that when you completely back out of the customisation screen, it just saves whatever it is you've looked at at any given moment.

Ultimately it's not a huge deal most of the time, but now that we've gotten to the point where we've got more Predators than loadout slots to save them it's a tad annoying if you want to switch back and forth between something you've got saved and something you used to have saved but now have to manually remake every time because that's not enough loadout slots to save them both.

I think part of it is just that it's arriving for free a lot earlier than most of us would have guessed, so anyone who shelled out for the code specifically is certainly going to feel a little peeved, especially since it's turned out to be free DLC and not something we even have to pay for.

I remember seeing on their Twitter feed though that they said they were going to be releasing it for PC and for the rest of the world on PS4 at a later date, but I guess some people just saw "new Predator exclusively with this NECA code" and left it at that.

I'm a perfect example. I bought the fig solely for the code and only for the code. My plan was to resell the plastic on ebay. If I knew it was coming out for free in a month or two and not a a paid DLC, I would have just waited for the free release and saved my money.

It wasn't exclusive, it was just in the initial wave, and Illfonic said it was coming out to everyone later this summer. It was always early access so buying the figure just meant you got it early. Now we didn't know if it was paid DLC or not and so it was a surprise it was a (free) chase reward but this just reeks of Jungle Hunter again when the community couldn't read.

The problem here is that they clarified that over Twitter. Illfonic's own forum is garbage so I get why they don't talk to people there but it's amazing to me how the people on Twitter knew, and there was an update over Reddit and they still couldn't put it together.

I'm a perfect example. I bought the fig solely for the code and only for the code. My plan was to resell the plastic on ebay. If I knew it was coming out for free in a month or two and not a a paid DLC, I would have just waited for the free release and saved my money.

If it's a paid DLC, or communication was better about being early access to a free item, this doesn't become an issue, no assumptions are made, no one feels they were lured in buying a figure they normally wouldn't buy, and no one would have been reading articles like this:

Perhaps Illfonic didn't even know they were going free with it, until later. But the reaction is not surprising, based on the communication, and how flippin soon the free Alpha became available after the code.

So anybody that spent between 30 and 60 dollars for digital goods and plastic they didn't want, that's on them. It was also only going to be exclusive between launch and September so it was going to be finite when it came to exclusivity.

So it's the consumers fault for not following @Illfonic? That's a hard sell for me. The Alpha figure, code and its ability to "unlock" the class got a lot of press. The later vague tweet didn't. We'll have to agree to disagree.

With this update, there's a new secret item that seems like only devs have atm, called of the Developer Helmet, it's a full-cover accessory for the Fire-Team and looks like a Halo helmet, datamining suggests it can be found in Field Lockers, but that has yet to be proven by actually finding it

It's also worth noting that the Predator 2 Spear is refereed as "The Classic Combistick", and not as "Classic skin for Combistick", which means it will be like the knifes, being a different model that takes a weapon slot and is the same except in looks

It's not just Neca. Price increases have spanned the entire market. I assume some of it is demand... I'm surprised how so niche some of these figures are these days... combined with inflation and the cost of raw materials. But they keep improving the quality too from head to toe, with incredible detailed paint jobs which results in higher labor costs. So I like to correlate (with exceptions) the increase in cost just to the increase in quality.  :)

Yeah the details have definitely improved a lot over the years. And with their move to giving a lot more of their figures the Ultimate treatment with extra accessories and stuff it's hard to complain too much.

Those people do not have a grasp of what standard PS4 hardware (the lowest common denominator) is capable. The game is build on UE4 engine which is not optimized like first party dedicated engines. Also foliage dense environment looks worse in low resolutions in comparison to blocky environment. Especially in movement. PS4 version of the game initially used FXAA post processing which was too blurry but they changed it into TXAA a month later.

I feel like this is a crappy thing to say, but you guys are really excited for the guy who got beaten by an ex-cop  :P 8)

There was a weird pixelation especially in certain lighting that made it look like an older gen game at times. And the frame rate often was rough too for many. But all of it was pretty much fixed somewhere around the second update, thankfully. :)

I mean if alpha and city hunter are going to be paid dlc, any chance i could get the pre order jungle hunter helmet at least? I think you unlock something similar to it with the elder class though if I'm not mistaken? I'm only level 53 :P

I'm very excited about the City Hunter skin. The mask looks too grey in that pic. Shouldn't it be more brown/bronze?

I'm honestly not sure about the coloration since lighting in Predator 2 can be pretty dark so the armor can come across darker than it actually is. That being said this could also be due to whatever lighting they use when they take these shots. The game itself has different lighting dependent on if one is in the game's menus or during gameplay. So wherever they took this it could make the armor look brighter than it is.

If it is wrong I don't doubt they'd change it later since they fixed Jungle Hunter.

Seems like it's in bright reddish lighting, if you look at the dreadlocks (which btw, are unique) you'll see it's reflecting red

Well going by the models, neca figures, etc it's like a copper color. But it's a prototype model from what we can see the one they put on the road map looks better, though that might not be in game. We shall see. I also think I'm gonna have a problem if the effects are blue and not orange like p2 would look out of place

If some helmets have special heat vision modes than I might start buying all the DLCs for sure lmao

I don't think they'd change the vision or cloaking FX. Though changing the gamma to be lower does go a long way in improving the game's visuals at least in my opinion. So when City Hunter launches he might look good under certain options.

And yes that screenshot is using the grey shaders, not the default ones, he is reddish brown on the normal ones

Armor looks great to me, it's just the mask that could use more tweaks. The mouth guard is too wide, the head cover is too narrow and not swept back enough. Also his dreadlock ornaments could use some variations in color and a few rings, but that's more of a nitpick. I do appreciate the cool new plasmacaster animation, though they should've changed the sound as well. And the P2 roar is nice, though they use the one from his healing scene, you'd think they'd have two different ones. Again though, as hardcore fans we're the only ones noticing these things, most will overlook them.

Wrist Rocket seems like a good weapon as well. Lights them on fire with a direct hit.

Wrist Rocket as a class locked weapon kinda confirms the Falconer's Falcon will also be locked, can't wait for more, but yeah, the helmet is accurate but the proportions are off

Currently City Hunter's horns will clip through Jungle Hunter and Elder's masks. I think it might be altered so the mask doesn't clip while at the same time being usable for everyone's face even if two of the masks don't exactly work.

I think for the wrist rocket it will be like how Elder's wrist blades had been discovered to be sitting off camera until called in. So once selected the gauntlet is swapped for City Hunter's.

Cool, looking forward to this. The bio-helmet for both the jungle and the city hunter are off. Not sure how that happened. Having fun with the game for sure. I know single player content is off the table but we need something else. How are we gonna play this game next year or the year after?

Personally I like a CH model. However I understand those that don't because I guess they are not tech savvy.

It is very hard to make a functional, proportional and 100% accurate model in video game. They have a Predator template/s set in the engine for the game and they are limited by them. Just without additional processing power and system overhaul, compromises have to be made.

I think I'll be frustrated with this one for a while. Perhaps they made the city hunter's bio mask larger so it would fit in customization with all the three main classes, but in doing so you're taking the p*ss out of the City Hunter. If that's the case, I just wish they would have left the CH a locked class.

Yeah the medical syringe noise was something that noticed. And then each time kinda makes me cringe. Mostly cause that didn't have to be there. But sure theyll fix it. Or he shall become Dr. Duck.

Yeah, I'm not sure how that roar even passed quality control. So strange.

With the mask, Maybe the way these models are constructed they had to stretch the bottom of the mask to fit not only the Ducky Hunter's mandibles, but the Scout's, Hunter's and Beserker's too. Regardless, I've always been in the belief that if you can't do it right, just don't do it at all. :-\

Eh, I think think it's mostly right, the most glaring issues are two mask proportions: head and mouth guard. P1 mask isn't 100% screen accurate either. I do hope they can tweak the model though. Also the mask could use its chin underside.

CH looks great! Not perfect, but just about as "off" as Jungle Hunter looks in the game to me. Both of their head shapes and masks are either too large, slightly too bulky or something. I still haven't placed my finger on it. The lighting in the class screens doesn't help either. But I would say it's the best city hunter sculpt we've ever had in a game, for sure!

The ilfonic Jungle hunter is almost perfect, the only problem I see is the fact the brows on the mask aren't as pronounced as in the movie(and the lack of bullet damage btw the eyes)

That explains it - I was confused about the different roars I was hearing today! That is great to hear and a welcome surprise. I don't think I saw it in the release notes.

Overall I don't mind his look too much, but his mask is definitely more "off" than Jungle Hunter's.

If anything I'm more confused by his roar. How did the sound of the syringe ever make it in there? It's cool that they gave him an actual roar from the film, but I can't quite fathom how they could mess it up like that.

I've only played a couple of matches with him so far so I'm still getting used to him, but so fr the wrist launcher doesn't seem amazing. It just seems like something you can use to hassle players a bit rather than do major damage, which I guess is why it's a piece of gear rather than an actual weapon.

Because that's what the game needed. Forget fixing bugs, patches, new content, a proper City Hunter. What the fans really were clamoring for... was new menus!  :P

I really can't fathom myself how that syringe sound got through quality control. The sound file can be trimed and softened in the beginning. Spliced with the current Predator roar. Even in fan games there would have likely been a better effort. Either Illfonic missed the syringe sound or didn't care and I don't know which is worse. Illfonic walked on water for me, until the City Hunter. Add its bugs to the syringe ripped roar and a bottom of a bio-mask that resembles the Boar Predator more than City Hunter, and this is one colossal disappointment for me. I paid $5.99 for a City Hunter, but what I got was a rushed mess.   :-[

The paid DLC is a disappointment for sure. I have also noticed a couple posts (here and in the Illfonic forum) about City Hunter specific bugs that render the character almost useless once throwing the combi-stick (which I think RidgeTop posted about in another thread). I played a few matches as CH without that issue but have reverted back to Jungle Hunter since those bugs have been discovered and acknowledged by Illfonic.

Setting up traps for the predator would have been an obvious plot point from the movie to add in the game.

That would be a nice addition to the FT; setting traps in the jungle of the maps...Overgrowth and Backwater are a couple that come to mind where there could be a plethora of places to possibly utilize bear falls or the log swinging trap. However, that didn't workout too well for the 'fire team' in Predator :)

This fandom gets the content it deserves.

Indeed. Everytime the City Hunter roars in-game he injects himself. Predator Steroids is real apparently.
