Seconded. Ann Crispin absolutely hit it out of the park. It's the only novelization that's actually better than the film.

I actually liked the Alien perspective in Res novelization.  Alan Dean Foster was overrated af. 



However, I was always team caste on the caste vs cowl debate because you can't use directors words to explain in universe explanations.    See Ridley Scott and his waffling ass for the last forty five years.
