Title: Animal Spawned Xenomorphs
Post by: Number13 on Apr 27, 2019, 04:05:41 AM
As we know, Aliens take features from the host, first stated by Ridley Scott and first utilized in Alien3. I had been thinking why the Alien franchise never tried to do a film that introduces Aliens spawned from different animals. I mean, we've seen the dog/ox Alien in Alien3 and the Predalien in AVPR, and they did draw up plans for the Alien that would birth from the Space Jockey/Engineer, the Ultramorph as it was called, that was never used. And of course, there's the Kenner Alien toys that started the idea showing off toys with animal Alien crossbreeds, and most of them being realistic, like a bull Alien, snake Alien, panther Alien, gorilla Alien, even a bat Alien could happen, you just need the biggest bat in the world, which would be the flying fox which is a bat about the size of a dog. Though some of them are ridiculous, like a mantis Alien, that can't happen since a mantis is so tiny and the Facehugger is twice its size, though there's the idea of a mantis exposed to the black goo. Anywho, I'm just surprised why no one ever tried that. I mean, Colonial Marines tried something like that with the Crusher, Boiler, Spitter, and Raven, but I felt those were unrealistic since they gave no explanation of where they came from, so they just came out of nowhere.

I actually used those crossbreeds in my second animated Aliens film, and I thought they were fun, I customized a lot of the models using the ACM models and combining them with different animal features. It was fun.

In regards to animal-bred Xenomorphs, I feel it needs to be done tastefully. People sometimes overestimate just how much the alien inherits from it's host thus we get pure 80's material such as the Kenner toyline, although that's all in good fun and I won't ridicule it for being so.

So let's say that a Facehugger managed to have nabbed itself some aquatic creature capable of being facehugged -- I believe the ensuing alien isn't going to be a full on Xeno-Mermaid looking thing (https://static.comicvine.com/uploads/original/12/125833/3382265-xenomorph+lobster.png) but rather a creature who feels more comfortable in a aquatic environment and will have a couple characteristics to aid itself underwater. Not to say it will be barred from walking on land, it just prefers the sea if anything. Much like how The Dragon had digitigraded legs and traveled on all fours, although it could've walked upright like any ordinary Xeno, it just preferred quadrupeded movement.

Also the alien crossovers with Judge Dredd are exempt from this rule, because Judge Dredd fighting the Aliens Kenner Toyline is just about the coolest damn thing and is testament to why I love Dredd.

For the time, I think the Kenner stuff is ace! I wont begrudge any nostalgia on that part. Honestly, I'm liking seeing NECA's attempt to modernize them. I'm still waiting for that Bull...

I do like the idea of the hybridization. But as above, needs to be done tastefully for the more serious entries. I certainly don't object to the concept, it's all down to execution.

I think the way to do it is to have the right ratio of things. At the very least it still need to look 60-70% Alien. That other 30-40% however must include smaller or major elements that communicate what that Xeno is.

I think the films didn't really go that far with it was because they never got to that point. The Predalien and the Runner is pretty much as far as it got because the next film was Alien: Resurrection and they'd been working on AVP for some time. Anything after was dependent on film sales and of course Ridley Scott did the Prequels and we ever got Alien 5.

From what I recall, the Kenner stuff wasn't necessarily meant to indicate those were the hosts. The story was meant to be along the lines of genetic splicing experiments which escaped and ran amuck, if memory serves right.

And the scorpion one, while labelled that, had to do with really massive insectoid things from another world, which characters just termed 'scorpions'. Was strange.

I'm a real big fan of the Kenner stuff, even today. Don't get me wrong, I adore the Runner and i think it gets the job done, especially since it's technically conveying the lineage of two completely different hosts. :P

That said, I agree with SuperiorIronman that the Alien should convey via quick visual shorthand what the Alien's host was. Be that dreadlocks and mandibles, horns, a snake tail, wings, I'm pretty okay with any of that.

I never got that impression from the toys' mini-comics re: genetic manipulation. Even the little intro with each mini-comic says the Space Marines are going from planet to planet, encountering ever more dangerous Alien evolutions as they go - that implies that the Aliens' forms are occurring naturally, rather than the result of an outside artificial force.

The Dragon is enough variation, the PredAlien's overindulgent.
I'm actually a fan of the predalien design. I like the DNA reflex aspect, though I think it's pushing the limits of what should be done. The Kenner toys were awesome, but a bit too much.

I'd also like to see more animal variations, but like people have said, the alterations need to be moderate.

An aquatic alien can be like a dog alien, just with arms and legs which are not as long, slightly webbed fingers, differently shaped back pipes and a thicker tail for swimming. Include the tail fin but do it like AVP 2010. Keep the creature biomechanical. Maybe give it a dolphin like exaggerated forehead, always keep the phallic look.

And I will always want a proper Predalien. Some of the comics, artwork and AVP 2010 have gotten close, but there's a better version out there.
Biomech, dark, no dreds, few spikes maybe, bugger than the predator by far, good looking mandibles, and for onec use a longer, not a shorter head. The predator has a bigger skull than a human does, so the Predalien should have a bigger head than that of a normal alien. A tad bit longer, keep it phallic, just thicker...

Only one solution available.

f**k the dreadlocks/horns/wings etcetera.
And f**k the idea it's-
substantially divergent from the Alien 1979 Design, Aliens 1986 Warrior Design, Alien³ 1992 design or Alien Covenant Design.
But the PredAlien is tougher and stronger.
Perhaps a upright Alien, influenced by the original Alien design and the Dragon.

The Requiem PredAlien's garbage.

Retract the dreadlocks and Dave Dorman's the best Official design.

I was ultimately okay with the Requiem Predalien, and I've come to like it more over time. Is it my favorite Predalien design? Not at all (see the Dorman picture above), but I don't mine the Requiem design at all. I especially like the translucent dome with the Predator skull inside, I think that's a nice touch.

For myself, it's representative of everything
that could ever go wrong with Alien,
instead of going right.

Yep, that Dave Dorman art is quite something.

I don't hate the Predalien in Requiem, I even like it especially when it's in the dark and you see so little of it clearly. But in the light? Full daylight? To me it looks ridiculous like no other alien does.

Pretty much this. I mean just look at the concept for the Ultramorph and you can figure where a good balance comes from.

Restraint is the crucial factor for me. Teeth and jaws, and pelvis/hind-legs should be the most obvious changes at first glance, torso length/mass and cranial structure come next. For example if you cut out the middle of the classic Alien skull, you more or less have a human skull. You can keep the phallic nature of the head while changing the "tip" (;)) based on the back end of the hosts skull for some light variation. Then you can work towards limb thickness/length and hand/foot shape.

Pic related is what I mean by altering the rear of the head structure, although I'm a fan of Deacon/Neomorph style fluted thorn heads too, and I think more elaborate one of those (with an upwards curve) would suit a Predalien well.

I don't think their really is anything wrong with the various Predaliens over the years, but it definitely shows that they can't get it right. Unlike the Runner, you don't really see a consistent Predalien. Nobody really has ever hit that design in a way that works as a nice balance of Predator and Alien visuals. It's something that still has to be tweaked. All of the Predaliens tend to do something better than the others, but none really work as the definitive Predalien which is probably why none exist.

And frankly, if the head was redesigned to be more like a triceratops frill (like an extension of the crest concept) and you draped dreads behind that, you would solve the issue of where to put the damn things. Just make the crest vaginal in design to retain the sexual design concept and you've basically solved the issue of the dreads.

To be fair the basic Alien design has changed across every movie, so by that metric they can't get that right, either.

Yeah, the action figures always looked too cartoonish to me, but the one in 'Alien 3' didn't look different enough, IMO. Should certainly have had larger/more powerful jaws, at least and the lack of dorsal tubes didn't make biological sense. Although, in fairness, I don't remember how far along they were in the design when they decided to go with that alternative canine host element.

Hmm, I might be misremembering the Denis Beauvais cards with the flying Queen. Not sure. It was a long time ago!

Can't say I agree with that, if only because it never made sense why Dorman made the upper jaws so tiny in comparison tot he lower. They should be more equal.

Shaun Noelte's isn't 100% ideal (I'd do away with the hair-like protrusions and make the chin less pronounced, but it's suitably ferocious), but it's probably come the closest to how used to imagine a Predalien appearing. Especially with the jaws looking like a properly cohesive configuration, as opposed to seeming like they were jsut glued on teh sides of he head, as the film version had.

https://www.avpgalaxy.net/website/interviews/shaun-noelte/

I liked the 2010 game version, too, though felt the floppy dreadlocks looked out of place and made it look like a cartoon girl in a few unfortunate pictures.

The adult alien's design was not altered at all when they switched the host from an ox to a dog - all of the adult Alien footage had been shot at that point, and re-tinkering with the design would have meant, well, re-shooting everything. :P

Oh, I was referring to the comics that specifically came with the Kenner toys, not the Beauvais "Operation: Aliens" trading card set. I've seen a lot of people assume that the two are related, but I'm not sure they were as related as people think.

When I draw animal spawned xenomorphs I just look up that animals skeletal reference from there and base it on that and exaggerate it much in the same way the original Alien is a twisted/exaggerated form of a human skeleton.

The head works for me and I like the limbs. However the larger chest is almost comical. It looks fine artistically, but for an Alien I would assume some form of carapace would form. Like in the hierarchy of the hive it's a bruiser/tank.

That's more like an actual hybrid than merely an alien that takes traits from its host.

It's hilarious and ridiculous, any Alien taking traits to that extent is.

But it's true to the dream/vision.

Good Lord. The more I learn about Vincent Ward's Alien 3 the more I think it would have ended up like some sort of Mad Magazine parody.

Re: Carlos Huante gorilla alien. I like it but as an Alien xeno it's lost the exoskeleton, it's lost the tail, it's lost the back pipes, it's lost the biomechanoid plating in favour of fleshy muscles. In fact, if you remove the elongated head and the epaulettes you haven't got a xeno at all. He should file it away for the next job in which he's asked to come up with an alien-as-bully-boy-thug design.

As for the mer-alien, you could lose the boobs and it would still retain the feminine look.

Something's wrong -- it's too cute for an amoral killing machine. You can also beat this one up.

This guy however does some crazy ass artwork. The story he weaves through the detail in his art is simply insane.

That was from a fan comic Spaghetti and I were working on about 13 years ago.  There's a few more on his deviantart page.

Re-reading the script now, I really didn't know much about layouts and how many panels to put on a page.  Had we continued I would've reworked it from 10 to maybe 20 pages.

Great thread ☺

I am firmly in the camp of the Alien only taking characteristics from it's host that it would need to adapt to a new environment (a fin for example  to allow it better movement underwater).

It doesn't really need the extra abilities exaggerated to  the degree it often is in fan art and if your setting it on Earth, it's already top of the food chain is it not?.

The concept of infusing DNA with the Xenomorph reminds me of the scenario placed apon Xcom 2 recently.

Anyone familar with the game knows it follows the 'bad' ending of the 1st game...humanity looses the fight and the Earth is enslaved by the Alien forces and they experiment with infusing human DNA with their existing forces and you get some very different character designs the second time around.

The Snakemen have gone from human looking infiltration units back to pure Reptilian form...

Where as the Sectiods. .once classic Roswell Greys
has been turned  into a much more imposing form in this incarnation .They  taller , with a visible mouth with teeth, still thin and still have glowing chest.

So more imposing and bigger threat, but looked awful i found and whilst i understood the design concepts,  came away hating the changes.

I'm glad for once I started a thread that didn't turn into a fight.

The reason I started this thread because when I did my second Aliens fan animated film, my #1 fan convinced me to introduce Alien crossbreeds. I had this awesome idea where Wey-Yu sic'ed Facehuggers on different animals based on the Kenner Aliens, but again, I stuck to the practical ones, in other words, animals that a Facehugger can get it's penis thing down. I got the Gorilla Alien, Snake Alien, Crab Alien (there are large crabs), Panther Alien, my version of the Dog Alien, a Boar Alien, a Rhino Alien, a Bull Alien (one with horns), and a Bat Alien. You ever heard of the largest bat, the flying fox, it's about the size of a dog, it's on the endangered species list, but still exists. I customized the models from Aliens video games like Colonial Marines and AVP2010. I thought it was fun. And of course, my 3rd story has the Ultramorph, because I felt that creature was a missed opportunity, I used a normal Alien with a Verdugo body from Resident Evil 4 because he had a smooth enough body.

I cannot let a single mention of Swarmy go by without bringing up that it's a terrible idea that conflicts with the basic premise of the species.

Check this out, I literally just put these together. But again, they're not practical because a Facehugger can't get on these bugs. Though, I've often joked that they could exist if the Engineer black goo got on those bugs, but it might not be a bad idea.

What? It looks like the toy.

I also just did this, again, it's from the Kenner toy the "Swarm Alien", I guess it's a Dragonfly Alien. I also made a modification, since the toy was two Aliens in one, like a flying one could pop off the Alien. But again, I did it because I had an extra Spitter head from ACM lying around so I thought "what the hell?" I mean, again, maybe the black goo got on a dragonfly.

Sacrilegious thread.

I was only referencing what Aliens do, which is take features from the host they grow inside of. An Alien growing inside a creature with wings, would have wings. So why not?

That's really nice of you, especially after my previous "incidents." But I didn't really take any offense to it. I was confused, yes, but I pretty much gave my defense and shrugged it off. I kinda also forgot.

I've been having fun customizing Xenos based on the Kenner toys, even though my recent ones were impractical since a Facehugger can't impregnate a praying mantis, but again, I wonder if I can use the element of the black goo on a praying mantis or a spider in one of my stories. A friend of mine also customized a King Alien, but I don't see how that would work, since there are no King Bees or King Ants, but he did a great job and wish I could use it for something, maybe not a "King Alien." And a fan of my work suggested a Bear Alien, which I made out of one of those Mortal Kombat Aliens, since that incarnation seemed very different from the original Alien. Wasn't it because he birthed from another Mortal Kombat character? Which I don't know why they couldn't just make a normal human spawned Alien in that game and stick with tradition, or do more than one Alien, each born from a different Mortal Kombat character. Could be cool to see a Goro spawned Alien with four arms, not like the Queen who has two large arm and two tiny T-Rex arms.

I don't like the idea of Aliens taking on superfluous features canonically, but it works for a cartoon toy line.

I just like the designing different Aliens, I just wanted to expand on the idea that gave birth, pun intended, to the Dog Alien, the Predalien, and the Ultramorph, if they would've used it. And the Kenner Aliens were a good jumping off point, especially how Neca is making cooler versions of them. Originally I wasn't gonna put the crossbreeds in my 2nd animated film, but a fan of mine talked me into it and I think it turned out great a brought new ideas to the story.

But again, I feel the insect Aliens are too impractical since you can't get a Facehugger on them, but I had fun with them.

Same here at least for the sake of consistency. All it's doing is using you as a resource to fuel it's growth, it may take a souvenir when it's ready to leave but for the most part the end result is going to be the same.

Yes.  As we've seen, it can get ridiculous pretty quickly otherwise.

As we all know, apes can be pretty goddamn scary when they wanna be, if you consider getting your face torn off casually by one scary.

Baboons by themselves elevate this tenfold. They are vicious hombres.

Just imagine an alien bred from that.

Oh, I was only half-kidding when I said that; baboons are nuts, and their skeletons are scary as hell while - crucially - being close enough to a hominid that it doesn't get silly.

I'm all in favour of different-looking xenos spawned from non-human hosts. Honestly I feel like it's one of the most unique yet underutilised features of theirs in terms of the movies. There's so much cool stuff that could be done, and has been done in the various facets of the EU, but it's largely been ignored in the films since Alien 3 introduced the concept. Literally the only thing since then has been the Predalien, which was cool to see on the big screen after so many game/comic etc. appearances beforehand (even if certain aspects of its design were controversial).

And while part of me agrees that if another movie was to play with the concept that it should be done reservedly, like the Dog Alien was, part of me frankly just wants to just say "**** it" and see them go full Kenner. Snake Aliens, Bull Aliens, Mantis Aliens. Giant Flying Queens. Go nuts!

I don't, abandon the Kenner style interpretation of the Alien DNA reflex and perhaps then a design echoing H.R Giger's work is achieved again.
Spoiler
And the Requiem PredAlien, as the Requiem Alien design is controversial because it's garbage.
