Title: Moments in AVP:R That Made You Cringe/Laugh
Post by: The Runner on Apr 06, 2019, 07:47:42 PM
1. "People are dying, we need guns."
2. "The government doesn't lie to people!"
3. The moment Wolf bursts through the hospital roof and an Alien looks at him and literally scurries away on its hands and knees like a preschooler who got caught at the playground past recess time.

The PredAlien (may its name be forever cursed) backhanding the Alien in the sewer.

The PredAlien (may its name be forever cursed) siccing the Aliens onto Wolf in the hospital with the over the top 'Kill him my evil minions!' hand gesture.

Pretty much any time the PredAlien (may its name be forever cursed) is on screen.

Oh and the Predator shooting a hole in his own ship.

Oh and the Predator shooting a hole in his own ship.

There was a bee.

Spoiler
but I agree, the idea was nonsensical. It would've been much safer to quarantine it on the ship, or park the ship out of view of earth until other predators could arrive to handle the situation covertly. Much easier and safer to clear a ship, than to deal with all the obstacles of the forest and city, not to mention the high probability of a very public outbreak.

The shot that crippled the ship would've made more sense as a stray shot that simply missed the predalien, and blew a hole in something necessary to the ships guidance and flight systems. Thus causing the crash.

The only way it works is to assume that the predator knew his death was imminent, and he did not have time to stop the autopilot by any other means. He simply fired out of necessity. Crash the ship, spare his own planet.

Also, don't forget the laughable overuse of the screeeeeee! from Aliens.

BS: Look guys, this film is so authentic! We gave them the ridge heads and made them SCREEEE a lot.

It's a cool sound effect but WAY over-used.  The sound effects were fan film level.  I'm surprised they didn't use pulse rifle sound effects for the guns.

I was trying to think of some specific parts that stood out for me, but I honestly just came up with too many. I'd say the whole film is a cringe-fest. And at times it's to the point where it's just uncomfortable, especially when it comes to the human characters.

John Ortiz is usually pretty solid. So his presence made a difference for me.

Pasquale did okay honestly. He basically bulldozed through the role, but it worked well enough.

Aylesworth had a few minor cringe moments, but overall wasn't bad. Her characters training and background were made evident, while still keeping her grounded as a mother and human being. She didn't go savage momma like Ripley in 86.

The other characters and performances were low caliber, and made the film feel cheaper than it should've.

I think without the three of them, the cast would've been a total loss.

John Ortiz is good. He's probably the only one that feels like a proper classic actor. He's wasted in this film, though. He would be good with an active role in a proper Alien movie, I think.

To be honest I think a lot of the acting is at least adequate.  Chelah Horsdal as Darcy over acts a bit, but Pasquale, Ortiz, Hager were decent enough.  Aylesworth and Lewis less so but still okay.  They had a pretty rubbish script to work with.

More like pure confusion. I don't mind a temporary reproduction method for a young queen before she is able to lay eggs but it needs some drawbacks, making the egg laying more efficient in the end. Eggmorphing would have been better.

Alien is full of rape and mother imagery. Having a young queen face rape a human mother and "replace" her baby with its own is alien like and f**ked up. But skipping over the egg/facehugger and the multiple chestbursters makes it too overpowered and an asspull. It was a plot device to increase aliens numbers quickly.

By that logic if the Predalien egg barfs from it's host reproduce orfice then that means the "Queen" in Aliens had a schlong and forced some unwilling colonists to give it BJ's.  :P

Or.....

It's the DNA Reflex. And the Yautja host DNA is so much more dominant, much more than humans and other hosts, that Predaliens become a hybrid of the two, i.e. the Predator DNA exerts a greater influence over the Alien species than other species.

Would make sense that a hybrid could use the way of reproduction that the host uses, the mutant queen did it in resurrection after all.

But the mistake they made in AVPR was to assume the predalien is actually a hybrid, which it should not be. The "normal" aliens are not really human\alien hybrids, just aliens. I don't see why the predator's DNA would be anything special in that regard  ;)

They flirted with the hybrid angle for sure, you just have to look at the skin color.

But it's still dumb, i hate it and the skinned preds were not even in the final movie  ;)

Actually, it is in the final movie. You can briefly see the hanging skinned Predator behind Wolf on the crashed ship in the background.

Interesting.  Predator genetic material is strong enough to exert dominance over Alien fetal development, and genetically more enticing for the Aliens to inadvertently favor them over humans (a possibility), yet the Predators are coveting human genetic material.  What a convoluted love triangle

Complete cringe was the whole pizza delivery scene. It was straight out of a stereotypical high school movie. I removed it last time I watched the movie and it doesn't make any difference, since Ricky explains the scene afterwards to Dallas. Better be left offscreen.

There is a number of things in that...."movie" that can either be considered cringy or laughable and perhaps both.

1. Predator having no concept of gun safety aboard a spaceship and fires not once but twice, causing the ship to crash. Also had he actually hit the Predalien, the acid could have done the same (assuming the ship is not acid proof)
2. The father and son, running towards the crashsite instead of getting help immediatly (granted I can forgive a little curiosity and the father did intend to call the sheriff.)
3. Buddy tapping the ship with his gun, I might be alone here but I just don't see the point in it other than its a cliched way to be curious about something.
4. Buddy not taking his jacket off immediately, he had a good second or so warning once his jacket smoked. Also his reaction to having his arm melted off seemed understated. I haven't witnessed anyone getting severely burnt either by fire or acid but I would imagine it would be painful enough for you to scream at the top of your lungs, especially if your limb was being melted off.
5. The chestburster scene, previous versions have been somewhat plausibly with the creature taking time to punch through the sternum, here it pops out in like two "punches" for a lack of  better term. Buddy's body must be very soft, like plasticine or something.
6.Facehugger scene in the sewers, the first one has an interesting way of it happening, what with it coming out of the water but the way it subdues them is unusually quick even if they are chemically sedated.
The second homeless guy even seems to just let it happen, he grabs it and holds it back but instead of getting a tense scene like in Aliens where Ripley was literally fighting with everything she had and was actually choking, the homeless man just  seems to let go after seeing the warrior. One could make the arguement he was choked out as I remember the hugger being close enough that the tail was around his neck but he didn't seem to be  choking, what with the ability to make yelling noises.
7. The predalien knocking the other alien back, just seems out of place. The species are usually very cooperative to the point Ripley uses them to demonstrate how bad Burke was. "You're don't see them f***ing eachother over for a goddamn perecentage"
8. The sewer fight scene, could have been good but it was just sad for many reasons, nerfed aliens, incompetent predator.
9. Spine ripping scene, unnecessary and silly coming from a non-sapient species. It serves no purpose other than to assume the audience needs more proof that its a predalien.
10. Which brings me to the skinning of Ray, this was just stupid.
11. The Predator not acting the self destruct device when the ship crashed.
12. Wolf not activating his (when it still worked) when it became clear the situation was beyond his control (thanks to him making the situation worse a few times)
13. The super fast search party. I might be overreacting here but I thought police only consider someone missing after 24hours. (scratch that, I just remembered they found Buddy's melted off arm early in the movie)

Because this list getting too long, I might condense a few things into one section.
14. Wolf's behavior, he causes a blackout, he kills a man in a cemetary for no reason (don't bother justifying that with "armed person" he was on a clean up mission not a human hunt and the human was not even aware of him or a threat to him, wolf once just goes off mission for trivial reasons)
Took his time in taking his mask off against what is essential and animal which brings me to...
15. The predalien...just the predalien, nearly if not everything about it. The egg barfing, the waiting patiently for opponent to take equipment off, skinning and taking spines.
16. Most if not all the human characters. I think other members here already used the dialogue as examples.
17. You know what, just most of the movie really.

The guy in the cemetery was armed and acting in a loud and threatening manner.

Sure wolf could leave him alone, but what if he runs into the guy later and he spoils an ambush or something?

Predators don't care about humans, even less so when they are armed. The man's behavior could've attracted unwanted attention of other humans or the aliens. He was visibly angry, panicking, making noise and armed. That wolf plugged him is no surprise. He would've killed Kelly if she had picked up the gun, he made that message clear. Wolf was in no mood for that crap.

While some are deserving, me thinks it might be a stretch to classify some of these as cringeworthy or laughable.

Though, we do tend to pick appart that which we hate.  :)

Hicks, Drake, Vasquez and Christie didn't really scream at the top of their lungs from acid.

I said severely, i.e your limb actually melting off, most of the wounds the above got were surface deep, though Drake got it fatally in his face and it was more than surface deem, his face looked almost skeletal. Also I think all the above did scream. May not be top of their lungs but appropriate for their wounds. Pay no attention to me, I'm tipsy and trying to take the edge of the pain. Not really working.

Quote from: Huggs on Apr 17, 2019, 09:21:50 PM
The guy in the cemetery was armed and acting in a loud and threatening manner.

Sure wolf could leave him alone, but what if he runs into the guy later and he spoils an ambush or something?

Predators don't care about humans, even less so when they are armed. The man's behavior could've attracted unwanted attention of other humans or the aliens. He was visibly angry, panicking, making noise and armed. That wolf plugged him is no surprise. He would've killed Kelly if she had picked up the gun, he made that message clear. Wolf was in no mood for that crap.

Why would Wolf worry about getting Xenomorph attention? That would suit his plans and in fact on two separate occasions he did purposely lured Aliens to him. Killing a human simply because he was armed and being noisy was just pointless and just there to add more gory and death.

"People are dying, we need guns."
"The government doesn't lie to people."
"What is this, the Titanic? Screw the 'women and children first' shit!"
"She's dead, she'd dee-aa-aaa-aaad."

Aliens dropping behind people like sacks of potatoes.

Wolf strip teasing for Chet.

Chet letting Wolf strip tease.

Every time an Alien just kind'a sat there and took it while Wolf posed.

The effect of Wolf grabbing Chet's tongue. Just a kind of dodgy shot.

The Alien crawling towards the helicopter at the end.

"Get to the chopper!"

Wolf's head-stomp.

Jessie splitting in half.

The stoners in the store.

The cemetery scene.

"Shut up, Dale, you're too stupid to talk" -- but a genuine laugh, not a mocking one :D

Yeah, I think the large cast (or "largely unnecessary" cast) contributed its fair share to the movie's overall mess. I mean of course other factors were at play here, as mentioned above, but the amount of annoying people was definitely a misstep. Even still, I include it in my Alien and Predator rotation  ;)

Moment when Wolf breaks hospital glass door always makes me smile. He just "f**k you, door! I'm going in!"

School scene where teenagers die does too. Sadistic enjoyment 'cause teens in movies annoy me and i hate "teenager love story" side of Requiem

"Goverment doesn't lie" line of course. He-he, poor lady.

Moment Wolf crushes Alien's head. Yeah!

And when he holds two xenos by their necks. Double yeah!

Final fight when Predalien loses his tongue. Also makes me wonder if Chet's blood as acidic as regulaer Alien's one.

I know but in the context of watching a movie based on ALIENS (1986), which was directed by James Cameron who later directed Titanic (1997) the sub-concious association is there.

I think you'll find the reference was to the movie rather than the disaster itself.

Poor Ricky. He was 5 seconds away from grabbing them cheeks and "SHOW ME..SAND THE FLOOR!"

I was just expecting a little consensual Wax-On, Wax-Off.

When Wolf pointlessly kills officer Ray and takes the time to skin him instead of just dissolving the body with blue liquid.

the opening in the theatrical version where the film tries to pass off that pathetic little scout ship for the massive mother ship at the end of the first AVP. They actually took the time to animate that scene with the scout ship breaking off from the mother ship, only to delete it. For what? to save a few seconds on the running time?

When Dallas and Eddie drive to the school to see the alien Ricky told them attacked him. They didn't bring backup, Dallas doesn't even have a gun and the kids are in the back of the police van. Once they see blood all over the place, they get in the police van and Eddie tries to call dispatch, and the radio stops working, and then later the cell phones stop working. Originally, I thought this was just a contrivance to keep the characters isolated but it turns out the military was jamming all communication frequencies in Gunnison. At this point in the movie the only people who have seen an alien are Ricky, Jesse, Dale, Kelly and Molly. Ricky tells Dallas and Eddie and all they do is go to the school, Kelly and Molly just run until they meet the others at the gun store. So how the hell does the military know ANYTHING about what's going on in Gunnison before the characters in Gunnison even know? And this all BEFORE the national guard shows up. Colonel Stevens looks at a monitor that shows O.W.L.F contamination levels, implying he knows exactly what the aliens are and how they work but then he looks at an image of an Alien on his monitor and asks "What the f**k are you?" Every fiber of this movie doesn't make any sense.

Before that, Sheriff Morales tells dispatch to call County and State once there is an explosion at the nuclear plant. Then, right before Morales and Dallas enter the school, the Sheriff tells dispatch to call in the National Guard. You have to look at it like there's much more going on in the background then what's just happening to these core characters. A typical town invaded by monsters flick.

Maybe he just knows so far what's been reported in by his troops and town officials and hospital officials, etc. but is personally actually seeing an Alien Xenomorph for the first time on that monitor. Because I think at this point, all OWLF has been really familiar with is Predators.

I doubt his old friend, Eddie, would care about that. If he didn't bring backup he could have at least given Dallas the shotgun that's always sitting in his van. Especially since he was dumb enough to bring the kids back to the potential crime scene. Ricky not knowing what attacked him doesn't change the fact that he was attacked and therefore could be attacked again by whatever was at the school, so why bring Ricky and friends back to the school?

Typical town invasion movies usually have a scene that gets the military's attention. Phantoms had a whole town's population disappear before the military took notice. Morales called in the national guard because of a blackout. and the military is automatically like:

If they had at least shown satellite images of the crashed ship on Colonel Steven's monitors, I wouldn't have cared. But that's asking too much from this movie.

QuoteMaybe he just knows so far what's been reported in by his troops and town officials and hospital officials, etc. but is personally actually seeing an Alien Xenomorph for the first time on that monitor. Because I think at this point, all OWLF has been really familiar with is Predators.

There were no troops other than the national guard and they didn't know anything and got killed in 30 seconds. I don't see how he can get any information from town's folk after he jammed all communications in Gunnison so early on. He knew what was going to happen before the shit even really hit the fan. Which brings me to my next point, nobody in this movie can conclude that the Aliens are extra terrestrials. Wolf erased all evidence of the crashed ship. So why is O.W.L.F even involved and how can they predict the Aliens' rate of infestation so accurately? Answer: there is no answer. The movie just really needed to drop that nuke at the end of the film.

Eventually due to the realization of the monster madness around him, Morales doesn't care about the rules of the law. But he doesn't realize there are monsters at that point.

QuoteEspecially since he was dumb enough to bring the kids back to the potential crime scene. Ricky not knowing what attacked him doesn't change the fact that he was attacked and therefore could be attacked again by whatever was at the school, so why bring Ricky and friends back to the school?

It was mayhem going on around them. Police. Fire trucks. Yelling. Morales just said the town has to be evacuated right before Ricky runs up. They can't send Ricky and his friends home.  They can't send Ricky and his friends to the police station. The town is being evacuated. Take them with you,  leave them in the back, and see what the deal is with the kids at the school on your way out. I even think there's real-life precedent for that.

Typical town invasion movies usually have a scene that gets the military's attention.

But they often don't. If it's The Mist, or Tom Cruise's War of the Worlds, these type of movies often just centralized around a few key characters and you learn bits as they do.

QuoteIf they had at least shown satellite images of the crashed ship on Colonel Steven's monitors, I wouldn't have cared. But that's asking too much from this movie.

I assume the Government/OWLF saw the ship come in when it crashed, via military satellite and radar technology. Personally I didn't need that shown to me.

I don't know. Like it or hate it, it's a big dumb B monster invasion movie and this is getting more logic scrutiny than it calls for in my humble opinion. AvPR is not presenting itself as intellectual high science fiction asking the big questions, films that we start questioning things like why are not people wearing helmets. To me it's just midnight movie popcorn fair.  :)

The pizza shop scene. I remember sitting in the theater thinking, "Yup, this is it. This is how far these movies have sunk." We're watching a pizza boy arguing with his manager about wearing a hat during work.

The pool scene where the alien attacks the teenagers and instead of them running to the door where they all came from, with a running car waiting for them, they run deeper into the school. God I hate this movie.

Vinegar's good on fish and chips.

Requiem's more like...

Something you eat only because you're allured by your romanticised idea of it but then when you do, you feel sick and wonder why you gave it another chance and it is probably worse every time.

It's not as utterly bland as the AVP chain though.
But you felt a degree of effort there, and a lot of kids like it's over the top sensibilities until, they're not kids anymore.

Every time Wolf was on screen I rolled my eyes. Yeah, I know, weird thing to say about a predator movie. But it just goes to show you how much this movie sucks, Wolf has no reason to be in this movie. Every time the movie cuts back to him I'm like "Oh yeah, there's a predator in this movie for some reason."  You could cut out all of Wolf's scenes and nothing would change. The actual story is about the characters escaping the aliens. Wolf fails at stopping the aliens, his presence in the film goes completely unnoticed by the characters until an hour into the movie, and even then they just see him once at the gun store and then never talk about him after that. How about that? a predator film where the characters barely give two-shits that he's there. That's when you know you failed at making a predator movie. The only thing he does that impacts the plot in anyway was when he accidentally causes a blackout and accidentally kills Jesse. They could have easily had the aliens do both of those things.

By the way, here's a fun drinking game, take a shot every time Wolf jumps and lands hard into frame whenever he enters a scene. He does that stupid superhero landing bit so many times I cringed by the third time he did it.

But otherwise you liked him?  ;D

No, sorry. He's still the worst predator ever. He killed an innocent cop, he consistently leaves his tech lying around town, the aliens should have killed him in 10 seconds but no, they had to make the aliens weak just so he could last the whole movie. Also, the predalien inexplicably toys with him throughout the movie instead of just killing him. Seriously, what's to like about this guy?

Sheriff Moralas calls in the national guard to assist in the town evacuation because of the blackout and the national guard shows up with guns and go into combat formation as if they were expecting a fight. I swear this movie is a treasure trove of laughably bad moments.

Also, The Halloween maze would have made for a better movie, at least for surface level stuff. At least it has multiple predators and a few creative scenes.

I just realized that this movie takes place over the course of just two days and the aliens take over the whole town in one night. That means the aliens were doing nothing but sitting on their asses for nearly two days waiting for Wolf to find them before they actually did anything. Just in case you needed more proof how much they held the Aliens back in this movie just for Wolf's sake.

They were setting up shop in the sewer system. Which should be mostly sealed, so that kinda makes sense. It wasn't until they had an exit blown open that they began to spread. And rapidly, thanks to chet. The biggest problem they could've expected early in the movie would be chestbursters in the toilet.

The ol' alien enema.

The part where Eddie and Dallas are at the bar and Eddie gets a call from dispatch about the explosion Wolf caused in the sewer. Eddie says he's on the way and Dallas tags along. We never get to see them investigate the explosion because if we did they would have found Wolf's laser grids in the sewer. funny how the movie just skips over that part.

Not to mention the treatment of the aliens and the obviousness of them being rubber suits. Then there's Wolf who goes to clean up and hide evidence and just leaves behind even more evidence.

The scene Dale tells Dallas and the sheriff to get off the town while they still can, and Dallas the douche tells him to shut up and that they need guns  ::)

That clearly was the smartest thing to do, a thing that a reasonable movie watcher could think of, and the movie basically tells you to shut up in order to keep existing. Damn that sucked ass so much.

Everything about the Predalien chestburster and its birth is wrong but that already started with the last movie.
Just to list some of the issues:

Scar doesn't realize he is facehugged or he just doesn't care.
The Queen doesn't care about killing an infected host (probably last of her kind surviving on Earth?).
A stab through the chest with a massive tail doesn't kill the Predalien chestburster
The Predators with "Chestburster vision" don't realize Scar is infected or just don't care.
The Predators wear full "war gear" inside their ships
The Predators use their shoulder cannon in their fragile ship, making it crash
A Predator decides to call for Wolf's help, even he could just as easily activate to self-destruct (is he hoping to survive?)

To be fair, these are AvP's not Requiem's problems

1. What he was supposed to do ? Commit Predator seppuku ? By the time other Preds arrived he was dead already and couldn't tell them

2. Queen was really pissed off

3. Well, yeah, that's hard to argue. Maybe she missed it

4 These Preds weren't wearing their masks

Actually, yes. In the script and novel he even tries. There are on-set photos of Anderson instructing Whyte on how to hold the dagger. He's supposed to die of his wounds before he can.

Not sure why it ended up on the cutting room floor. It would've at least made Scar more sensible -- he held out as long as he could to stop the Aliens spreading, then died.

Quote3. Well, yeah, that's hard to argue. Maybe she missed it
She do. She gets Scar in the gut, below the sternum where the burster is.

Quote4 These Preds weren't wearing their masks
I appreciate this was Anderson specifically addressing why they miss the PredAlien -- but it doesn't answer why they wouldn't even check :D

Although considering how quickly the bursters pop in AvP you can almost forgive them for thinking "Well he didn't die until a minute ago, so surely if he was infected he would've given birth by now."

Also, the "Scout ship with Predalien" separating from the mother ship has been a source of confusion for years, the movie could have communicated this better (I know it's in the extended cut, although not sure I've actually seen it). The movie rushed through its opening but had no reason to get to the boring human scenes so fast.

Has anyone noticed that the brief shot on Yautja Prime features 2 Predator statues, and one of them looks a lot like Wolf.
I guess Wolf is hot shit on his world, in addition to owning a Penthouse apartment with a great view.

AVP is a guilty pleasure though, maybe because I am a fan of the comics and this is somewhat relatable to Broken Tusk and Machiko.

Whole "wear your har" dialogue. Makes my skin crawl. Not in a good way

When Ricky gets beaten up/looks for his keys in a literal pool of shit.

Also, Xenos in that movie sure spend lots of time in sewers. Does that make them eveb more turds than Res ones ?

If you mean hat.... as someone who has worked retail and worn uniforms, the dialogue is unfortunately very realistic.

Well, that explains EVERYTHING, doesn't it ?  :D

Ricky's comebacks at his boss is what makes this scene cringey

Grounds it in reality, much in the same way Alien's working man vibe did... :-X

Different strokes for different folks, I guess

Idk, it just sounded stupid to me:

- Look, the only reason you got this job is because your guidance counselor begged me to give it to you.

- Yeah, I'm sure the fact that she's hot had nothing to do with that, huh?

Ugh

What's next ? You gonna defend "the clock" too ?

It's all done so poorly that it's hard to even watch without your eyes rolling right out of your head.

I feels like you're watching a CW kids show.

Pure uncut cringe

Thank you

Voodoo, you should be happy though - I gave your second favourite movie of all time an honest try and watched it. To the credits ! Maybe now it's your time to re-watch The Predator ? Sober !

The most cringeworthy scene for me is Predalien laying eggs in the pregnant mothers in the maternity ward and them getting chestbursted. In the theaters I felt it crossed a line, and because of it I didn't rewatch AVP:R for years.

As much as I dislike Requiem I must give that scene its credit - it makes me genuinely uncomfortable. Especially shot of these little round objects (I guess, embryos) sliding down her neck. Ugh

It's less disturbing if you imagine them as Cadbury Creme Eggs.
