Title: Dark Ambient
Post by: Born Of Cold Light on Sep 05, 2015, 07:25:44 AM
Anyone here a fan of this music?  I personally find it incredibly inspiring for my writing:

I used to listen to a lot of dark ambient, mainly European. My favorite was raison d'etre from Sweden; the sole member is Peter Andersson. It is the only dark ambient project I will still listen to on occasion. The two albums that really made an impact on my life:

Requiem For Abandoned Souls (2003)
The Stains Of The Embodied Sacrifice (2009)

Both albums would be considered pure night-terrors in audio form for many people, while others may become stronger by enduring the pain and be in a metamorphic meditative state throughout the ordeal, observing themselves within. Both are great for when you are questioning life...

Some other really good ones:

Lustmord - Heresy
Lustmord - The Monsterous Soul
Lustmord - The Place Where The Black Stars Hang
Lustmord - The Dark Places Of The Earth
Sleep Research Facility - Nostromo (yes it is a tribute to the bleakness of space in A L I E N)
Sleep Research Facility - Deep Frieze (album is about Antarctica)
Sophia - Herbswerk
Sophia - The Seduction of Madness

One of the main problems I ran into was the extreme rarity of some of the CDs. Before all the re-releases of raison d'etre, the original presses on Cold Meat Industry were IMPOSSIBLE to find and easily asked 30-40$ a piece, if still sealed. Speaking of CMI, it was a super sad day when he announced that the label and webshop in Sweden were defunct and now extinct. :( Just about any CMI release was different and the bands/projects were very interesting.

Raison d'etre is amazing.  An excellent, little well-known one is Sephiroth, who merged ambient music with faster tribal beats:

Lustmord is definitely a favorite of mine, and several of his songs heavily inspired my fiction writing.  Have you checked out his most recent album, The Word as Power?  It's his first work with vocals, and it's incredibly haunting.  You can listen to the entire thing on his website:

Pure Dark Ambient brilliance teaser by Peter Andersson of raison d'être. The last minute of the teaser is just unearthly scary.

Besides summoning the voids from yesteryear via Cold Meat Industry, I've been getting into some of the releases from Cryo Chamber (label), as they now host a vast number of artists upon establishing direction these past few years. The highlights being yearly collaborations based around the Gods of H.P. Lovecrafts Cthulu Mythos.

So far:

Cthulu
Azathoth
Nyarlathotep
Yog Sothoth

Kalpamantra is another modern purveyor of quality darkness.

I agree, Kammerheit is f**king brilliant. He has another outlet Cities Last Broadcast which is also very good.
Don't mind some of Randal Collier-Ford either, especially the Temple of Algolagnia material.

False Mirror -Derelict World being another I hold in high regard and Parhelion -Midnight Sun evokes an antarctic solitude of worthy mention.

Everyone here should experience Phelios -LV426 at least once, seems fitting right!?

Also, some mentioned Burzum here earlier. Honestly, perhaps considered more Dungeon Synth? Actually, is there a Dungeon Synth thread?
Aside from the early classics, of which I would include Burzum for sure, Mortiis, Cernunnos Woods, etc, Depressive Silence is great 90's DS from Italy and more recently a German Label by name of Voldsom keeps the old spirit alive and well, I cannot recommend Til Det Bergens Skyggene-Skoglandskap (vandringen I) enough.

Keep on droning....

I actually work as a dark ambient/drone/noise producer and I've been lucky enough to license some of my recordings for some local short films, commercials. I will see about posting some samples at some time soon.

THOSE ARE GOD TIER! I'm so glad I'm not the only one here who hears this stuff! I've been listening to Paleowolf and his covers of dark ambience based on Ice Age animals. Megafauna Rituals is my go to for when I was doodling me some ice age critters.

Yeah sure.
Not big on just throwing in youtube files etc myself. That said, I am trying to get through everyones recommendations here.

"Kalpamantra is also a modern purveyor of quality darkness"

LV-426 is Track 3 in this behemoth of compilation.

Likewise, I spin those H.P. Lovecraft records often.

Parhelion - Midnight Sun is my current obsession though. If Antarctic desolation is your Jam give it a go. The first track is kinda throw away but The Transmission, Midnight Sun and Forgotten Outpost are stunningly beautiful. Should be on youtube surely

-To Kwisatz

Haxan Cloak wasn't bad at all, mate.
I felt the perhaps Industrial influences in there. Worked Well.

Paysage d'hiver has always been hit or miss for me personally, as can be the case for Artists of such prolific profile.
Tiefe means 'Deep', at least I'm sure enough it does without resorting to google. Or a German Dictionary.
A fitting title for the Smothering Wash of Drone/Echo overlaying the drum machine and Emperor/Anaal Nathrakh tonal similarities.
f**king enjoyed it though, thank you.

I guess I'll always hold Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss to a pinnacle for this Ambient/Black Metal amalgamation.
The first time I heard it at a Record Bar through headphones upon request back in 1998, as $44 for 4 songs was a huge ask for me financially.
It really took me away! From the first note to the last, and it still does.

On the the topic of Ambient Black Metal, Australian outfit Ill Omen has (among many releases) an Unholy Trinity well worth the time digging into.
Spear of Salvation (ep)
Remnant Spheres of Spiritual Equilibrium (ep)
Enthroning the Bonds of Abhorrence (album)

Also, Elysian Blaze - Blood Geometry is a 2hour journey constructing meta-physical Monoliths of pure Darkness.
Worth the exploration and introspection. In future, I shall post recommendings of this nature in the Black Metal thread.

Purchased this and the previous album directly from the raison d'être webshop in Sweden. You can technically listen to his music for free on his site, but I (and many others) suggest purchasing the music in some format. I am an old fashioned man and have to have the CDs, especially for the artwork. Enjoy, I know I am! :D

A chilling return to the older schemes of rd and it is so grand.

Some amazing stuff here.  Raison d'etre is a favorite of mine, and I love those Lovecraft albums.  BTW, nearly all of Lustmord's stuff is up on Youtube now:

Finally gave this album a proper listen the other day (actually, back to back listenings). Not as textured and variant as previous works, which is a nice change. Instead, it is a descent into the deep world of forgotten realms and floating past ruined civilizations. All four tracks are fantastic and highly recommended.

11/10

Additionally, I should mention the reason I put up teasers and not full tracks/albums is bc I wish for you to explore the universe of raison d'être on your own and experience the soundscapes yourself. ;)

That raison d'etre sounds amazing.  I'll definitely check out the rest of the album later on.

I just recently came across this interesting piece of dark ambient soundscape:

If you guys are interested in ambient/cinematic electronica, I made a 7 track EP that is very evocative of that genre; plenty of John Carpenter worship and Vangelis worship as well ha, and a dash of Trent Reznor and Massive Attack.

I got Ariel Zucker-Brull (does Perturbator's artwork among various other synth acts) to do the artwork, riffed on the anime Wicked City ha -

I've been enjoying the absolute shit out a compilation album :

Tomb of Ordeals

Wonderfully Dark and with a real cool 'Predator' aura about it.
Released on the label Cryo Chamber.
Recommended!

Also picked up a CD recently (slow downtuned cavernous death metal however):
Ancient Meat Revived- Tribute to Cold Meat Industry

Some strange reimagined versions of Dark Ambient for sure, though it works in achieving a similar state of transcendency.
Intense Abstract Art!
