Title: Prometheus: The Art of the Film...
Post by: Glaive on Feb 01, 2012, 04:24:25 PM
Prometheus: The Art of the Film now for pre-order
Comic store Forbidden Planet is now taking pre-orders on a Prometheus related book.
The hardback book, titled 'Prometheus: Art of the Film', will be released on June 10th 2012 and features production design art and behind the scenes photos from the film.

The pre-order price at Forbidden Planet is currently £19.99 ($31), with an RRP £24.99 ($40).

Amazon hasn't listed it on their site yet, but an Excel sheet showing their book releases for 2012 reveals their release date as June 5th 2012, and will come in hardback ($34.95) and limited edition ($75) flavours.

The description of the limited edition book says: "Hardback in slipcase", while the regular hardback will be "Hardback with Dustjacket".

The book's synopsis states:

"The most eagerly awaited film of 2012 - Ridley Scott returns to sci-fi for the first time since Blade Runner!

Visionary filmmaker Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner) returns to the genre he helped define, creating an original science fiction epic set in the most dangerous corners of the universe. Produced with the full co-operation of the filmmakers, this lavish book, showcasing stunning production design art and behind the scenes photos, will be the only tie-in publishing to this eagerly awaited film."

Interestingly the list of books from Amazon also details a re-release of the popular Heavy Metal comic 'Alien - The Illustrated Story'. The release date for this is not coincidentally May 29th 2012, and will also be released in a limited edition version.

This is great news.  Thanks for the information, Glaive.  It'll be wonderful to watch the film at the cinema and then read the book, whilst waiting for the blu-ray release. :)

This being the only tie-in would mean no novelisation, no comic books?

Good thing that cover isn't final.  I want something different.

Dear god, $75 for a measly extra slipcover? Am I really crazy enough to buy that?

Probably.

I wish there was a novelisation, and well a Giger's Prometheus book although it seems that there might not be as much actual Giger in the movie as we might hope for

Maybe Giger will go and release some portfolio or such thing on his own, like in the past?

And I too wonder if a slipcover justifies a $40 price difference, or is there more to it?
Cause if there is no difference in content there is no way I'll pay 40 more for just a cardboardbox.

I don't recall anyone saying that WON'T happen...Maybe we'll get a comic book 'Metal Hurlante-style', a 'Giger's: Prometheus', 'The Prometheus Photonovel', and 'Blood and Acid: The Making of Ridley Scott's Prometheus'...

...one can but hope!

Exciting to get this book, but I was also really hoping we'd see Alan Dean Foster come back for a novelization. I guess in the era of the home theatre, novelizations are a thing of the past. :(

Still, I'll be buying this!

I wonder why there's only one tie-in book? Obviously I don't want anything that isn't serious, and certainly not any kind of fast food promotion.

Maybe a definitive 'Making Of Prometheus' as opposed to The Art Of?

A good making-of on a bluray/dvd could be sufficient.

Don't know how big the merch market is for Prometheus.
I personally would like happy-meal spacejockeys, just for the fun of it.
But I doubt that. Depends on the pg rating?

Tron:Legacy for example had an awfull art-of book and the making-of book has been cancelled.
The extras on the home media releases where ..ehm... let's say scarce.
And I recently found out that all the cool behind the scenes stuff has been released in the shape of an iPad-app!
This thing is über cool: storyboards, model-turnarounds and hundreds of concept-art pieces.
Short: This app should have been a book or a disc-bonus.
And we all know what happens to all the stuff when disney decides to take it offline.

And Tron got an "the-full-story-app" instead of a novelisation.

As cool as the stuff in the app is I hope the marketing for Prometheus will be a little less blindly futuristic in it's aproach.

To be fair, that is only up-to-and-including the film's release...if it's as GOOD as I believe it will be, there WILL be more.

Much like the original film.

(...and a lot of those will be cash-in crap...like the original...)

No more tie-in publishing does not include tie-in toys, games, etc, so arguing that would be irrelevant.  And we already know Hot Toys is making Prometheus figures.

Hmmm. Chris Warner hinted at Dark Horse maybe doing something for the movie. It has been a few months since I spoke to him though.

Why would Dark Horse do anything? It's obviously not an Alien movie.

I know, tell me about it!  That mysterious croissant shaped craft, that seated "telescope" object and a company called Weyland Corp; all completely original ideas, which have absolutely no connections to Alien whatsoever!

'Only movie tie-in' - I sincerely hope there'll be much more than this and the
DVD/blu-ray/soundtrack. I love these 'The Art Of...' books, already having the 'Bond' and Avatar'
ones, but they don't really go in depth. Yes, I know the extras on the DVD/blu-ray will have all that,
but I like to have a large book to hold and not a remote, y'know? I want to read a novelisation as well
as numerous other books and yes, as somebody mentioned, a 'Metal Hurlant' or 'Heavy Metal' version
of this and a Giger art contribution special would be a dream for me. The expected scope of this film
demands a lot of peripheral reading merchandise.

IMDB have an article up claiming there will be a link to Prometheus in Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Haven't seen a mention on this awesome forum yet.

Well, if part of the game takes place inside of the derelict they might have checked the facts, so not to contradict anything from Prometheus.

Interested if this turns out to be true. The problem is how can they link a narrative set on LV-426 to a movie that does not go anywhere near said planet and occurs around 100 years in the past? If there are links, nobody will be able to recognize them before the release of Prometheus anyway, unless they specifically refer to known characters in the new film, as in:

Marine A: "Yo, you remember what happened to the crew of the Prometheus right?".
Marine B: "Yeah man, that shit was nasty. Hooah!".

-Chris.

Like I just said, it might be simply related to the derelict because further details and explorations of the insides should be Prometheus territory by now.
The connection might just be an avoidence of contradictions.

I think we will see what came out of the space Jockey in prometheus... If so then that is the most likely tie in, in my opinion. Oh and it doesn't have to be the space jockey in the derelict we see in prometheus. It just needs to be a space jockey impregnated by an alien.

That is my take on it  ;)

QuotePSB: Are you excited to see Prometheus? Will any of the Space Jockey lore hinted at in the film make it into Aliens: Colonial Marines?

RP:
I'm very excited about Prometheus. 20th Century Fox invited us to read the script and check out production and ACM's director, Brian Martel, had a discussion with Ridley Scott about the matter years and years ago, so it's been a really interesting seat for us on this one. A bunch of our guys went out to read the script a while back. I chose to decline because I didn't want the spoilers — I can't wait to see the final film! Ridley is such a master storyteller and filmmaker and I'm thrilled that he's spending some more time in science fiction. Oh, and I haven't dodged your real question. Yes, ACM will bring you inside The Derelict on LV-426. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll leave it at that!

This game has been in development for many years, and has had it's release constantly pushed back further and further, i really don't know what to make of all this. I lost interest in this game a long time ago, but the recent trailer looked promising, so i'm gonna wait and see what the reviews say, fingers crossed a demo will be released in the future months. Regarding the space jockey i wouldn't be surprised, if the levels had to be changed to match continuity, as fox is still one of the power houses behind this game. Also it is good marketing to push game sales, bear in mind that's IF all this true, imdb are not well reknown for their accuracy. So let's wait and see.
