Watched episode 1 last night. Absolutely loved it. Off to a real fascinating start. Ryder is wonderful. The tone is so intriguing and mystery. And that music...love it. Really can't wait to watch more.

I'm on episode 4 after starting a couple of nights ago. I love the 80's vibe, even if it does bump you on the nose god knows how many times. Great so far, though.

Still loving this!

It's mostly the rampant classic 80's movie name-dropping. It happens a lot.  A lot. Not that I mind.

Finished this last week. Absolutely loved it. Great feel and atmosphere to it. The cast absolutely nailed it. There wasn't a single part I felt didn't work. The story wasn't completely original but I feel it was presented in such a way that nobody will really care. And the music...just phenomenal.

I'm curious to see where they go with future seasons.

Yep, this was awesome! Love anything with an 80's vibe so was always going to be in to this. All 5 kids were outstanding (especially Millie Brown) and Hopper was also a great character. Had something in my eye for the last half an hour or so of the finale... 😥

Great show, highly recommend. An ode to 80's horror and directors such as Carpenter and Spielberg without ever feeling like a rip-off. Everything works great - The acting, the visuals, the music, the story. Only gripe was that a scene in the climax feels a little cheesy, but so did a lot of 80's stuff so I guess it's acceptable. Can't wait for season 2.

I looked around but couldn't find a Stranger Things thread, so I figured I'd start one.  If one already exists somewhere, we can merge them.

So I'm almost done watching this on Netflix.  Pretty good series.  I've never seen such a mix of sci-fi, horror, and fantasy all rolled into one.  There are some specific pop-culture films that are referenced in this series, Alien being one of them.  The directors do a tasteful homage and the result is a really great show.

Such an amazing show in so many different ways. I'm delighted to hear that there is a 99% chance there will be a second season.

However...

Spoiler
As much as I love all the characters in the show, I don't see how they can make a season in the same town and with the same characters without making it repetitive and cheesy. I know they've been talking about exploring the Upside-Down more, dealing with Sarah's death more, Will possibly being changed by the parasite and his time in the other dimension as well as dealing with Ell's death... But still. I'm not a big fan of too many epic and fantastic things happening to the same people at the same place over and over again.

Now, a route that I think would be worth considering for the next season is if it shows up that all of them, without knowing it, are now living in another dimension, or in separate dimensions. Realizing that you are lost and that nothing is essentially "real", would induce panic and fear in most people (I know, it's very Twilight Zone, but what's wrong with that?). Maybe Ell and the Monster are still alive and are the only ones able to correct the damage. They could also explore the origins of the monster, as long as it brings up way more questions than answers.

I just finished watching this.  Really enjoyed it.

Regarding the idea of referencing existing films and stories, I think this couldn't have been better.  Rather than copying things directly, the film mixed ideas in such a cleverly fluid way that it came off as somewhat of a spoof of the times.  It allowed the viewer to engage in a game to try to figure out what was being referenced, at every point.  It really captured the zeitgeist of the 80's.

Here are the referenced films and stories I caught:

ET
Stand By Me
IT
Alien
Poltergeist
Nightmare on Elm Street
X-Files - nineties, I know, but still
X-Men - Ditto

I am sure I missed many nuances.  Anyone caught other film references?

I know Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Dungeons N' Dragons were obviously referenced, but I found that this was a literal reference, and not an implied characteristic reference.

Can't wait for season 2!

The kids are great in this. Too much time was spent on teenager storyline, it started to piss me off. It was most likely just the actress who played the missing boys sister. I wouldn't say this is the best show of the year so far. Night Of takes that. Still a very good start.

Anyone else think Wayward Pines season 1 was better? They're similar in feel for me.

Yes!  I used to have Brad Fiedel's music was just amazing in Terminator.  Between that and my Vangelis music, my dorm-mates must have thought I was a couple cans short of a six pack.  (Which I most certainly was)  It was sorely lacking in some of the sequels.

And yes, the score of Stranger Things nailed the vibe..

Well, not directly, but FEAR owes a lot to Sadako and the Ring films. One thing I will say is Stranger Things is by no means original, but put together with such love, a respect of the material that it is referencing, and a pleasing way of going against expectations by following tropes and then breaking them.

I am a little concerned about a season 2. I like that this was just something that happened to some select people in a town in the 80's. Although they have already released the episode titles, I got the impression that it was originally written as a stand alone story. I just hope they can maintain the same level of storytelling without things getting ridiculous. I almost feel a completely different set of characters, maybe in the 90's with a similar 90's vibe, might be a better way of keeping the first as a perfect stand alone story.

Spoiler
I want to see what's happening to Will, learn more about this dimensional rift that is still stuck open, and I want to find out whats going on with the Sheriff and if El is still alive. There is a lot to explore and I'm sure there is more than enough story left to tell with these characters.

I didn't mean my original comment to sound like I didn't like the show if it did, I loved the show. After watching it though I noticed certain similarities with F.E.A.R is all. Not in the plot or over the top action, just with certain things.

Alma (child version) and Eleven are really similar. Not that they're motivation is the same, Elle wants to escape what was going on where as Alma wants revenge.
They both have extremely strong and similar psychic abilities, but I don't think Eleven has mastered things like "liquefying" people and psychokinesis.

the Upside Down and the "Alma-verse" are just twisted versions of their respective realities, and both start to bleed over into the actual realities.

The Demogorgan and the Creep are really simmilar in appearance and in how they move. More is known about the Creep as opposed to the Demogorgan, but I've read that some people think the Demogorgan was accidently made by Eleven's abilities, much like how the creatures in F.E.A.R are made from a combination of Alma's abilities and the things she fears.

Creep
(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fvignette1.wikia.nocookie.net%2Ffear%2Fimages%2Fd%2Fdf%2FFear3creepv2_low_polyb.jpg%2Frevision%2Flatest%3Fcb%3D20130817120104&hash=c9472943d3ce99f2d9541ccf51d19c3ff615f0ae)

Demogorgan
(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Foneperfectshotdb.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2016%2F08%2Fdemo10.jpg&hash=5238e4b45fc9ef3c3bfbf3585de3c5c37a3cf2ec)

In F.E.A.R Alma's father does the expiriments on her for Armacam/ the US military and in Stranger Things Elevens "papa" does them on her directly for the government/military.

I'm not saying any of Stranger Things is based on things from F.E.A.R, but they are very similar.

Binge watched it over the weekend. Excellent follow up to S1, which was no easy act to follow. Thought Max was the best of the new additions, and they did a great job of developing the characters. Episode 7 was the weakest, mainly because it took us away from the main story at the worst possible time, but it was still a decent episode in it's own right...

Just finished season 2; I thought it was good, but not as great as the first season.

Spoiler

Positives:
-The Mind Flayer was a hauntingly disturbing creature that filled me with existential dread just like Cthulhu and the Elder Things did in Lovecraft's works. Very creepy, and very well done.

-Cinematography, acting, and production design. It still captures the 80s aesthetic like nothing else in recent memory.

Negatives/Mediocrities:

-The plot. It's essentially a retread of Season 1 with bigger monsters. There's a new town bully, etc.

-The Demadogs/Tulip monsters just didn't have the same impact the big one did in Season 1.

-The government people being good guys now was a bit jarring. They went from outright murdering and executing witnesses in season 1 to making the survivors sign NDA in season 2? lol
[close]

Overall, I give it a solid 8/10. It's certainly better than most of the bullshit that comes out these days. I still highly recommend it.

I never watch the trailers or read the fluff for this show, I just watch it first of all and then have a look around at interviews, articles... I have no idea why episode 7 was singled out, but we all know how hyperbolic the internet is with 'worst episode evur' and 'worst writing evar!' crap.

I think the problem with 7 was the pacing. It slowed the flow down a lot.  I don't think it'd have been singled out if it took the episode 6 slot.

It's obvious they wanted to tease by leaving us on an exciting cliffhanger in 6 and then staving off release with 7. Reminds me of GoT's The Mountain and the Viper leading into Watchers on the Wall. People were pissed at the time and didn't care about the Wall battle because they were so tense about seeing what happened in the other plotline. I imagine in time people will slack off 7 once they have more material to digest.

I still don't understand the impatience though. Nobody had to wait to have access to the whole season. They were given it on a platter and asked to eat a certain way *shrug*

Agreed. There's nothing really wrong with the episode itself; The problem is that it featured right as the season climax started, so it felt like filler because you ended up wondering why you're watching Eleven's antics instead of the upside down invasion scenario that started in the previous episode. If the same episode appeared as episode 6 or even 5, it would've been perfectly fine.

I thought Episode 7 was what Preacher should have done with its hell subplot. Put it in one episode by itself so it doesn't get too dragged out.

Wow Noah Schnapp (Will Byers) was absolutely amazing, especially the latter episodes.  He really sold his character's situation.
Episode 7 was fine where it was, to me. A change of pace towards the end was no problem.
Not sure if I liked Season 2 over 1, but still loved it.
The soundtrack for both seasons on vinyl would be awesome.
I think they are rushing "relationships" for the younger kids, just my honest opinion.

Spoiler
So where was that nice government guy when the kids were being held hostage?  Also, starting with 11 gives us more opportunities to see more characters coming to life with different abilities, maybe even one of them could be a season's "monster."

Im fine with episode 7.  Made me anticipate the ending all the more.  The episode was necessary to tie up loose ends in the season and push all the characters together for the final showdown and the return of eleven.

She plays Becky Ives... Eleven's aunt..

Just finished up season 2. No binge watching this time! I kept it to mostly one episode per night, or 2 in a row over the weekend. I think that made it more enjoyable.

Happy to say this season did not disappoint. I also enjoyed seeing Paul Reiser's character as sort of the polar opposite to Burke in Aliens. Similar situation but different moral compass, like the writing was self-aware of that aspect.

Finished this last night,   really enjoyed it,  looking forward to season 3 already.

So come on admit it,  who had a huge teary grin on their face for the last 10 minutes?  felt like a dad to all of them.

Steve Harrington and Dustin are just great in this series,  when he does his hair,  so great.

Finished season 2, I really don't get the love for this show. I don't think I've ever heard music so badly utilised. It just sat on top of scenes and stood out. Shocking.

It reminds me of Walking Dead in its lightness, although it does play better in this show.

The kids were great again but only got around 4 episodes to shine. Splitting up Eleven caused serious problems for this season. It meant there was another bare bones thread to add to the scientists, the upside down and Hopper. Hoppers story literally only progressed in one scene in the final episode! He was pretty much a stagnant character this while series.

It played heavily on nostalgia again. It really let's you know it's set in the 80s. Same problem I had with the first series. Far to heavy handed for me to buy into or respect.

Acting was first class again, but they need more meat on the story instead of having the cast do the heavy lifting.

I struggle to give it anymore than 6/10.

And episode 7 was one of the cringes things I've ever seen. The actors they got for the gang over acted and Elevens 'sister' was one dimensional. They could build on her in the next series but who cares really.

I finished Season 2 over the weekend. As with Season 1, I really enjoyed it and it really ended on a positive note with seeing all those characters after the ordeal. Poor Dustin and then Nancy comes in. That put a smile on my face. I just love everyone in this series. I think I fancy doing a rewatch of both seasons soon.

I had to look her up as I thought it was her but I wasn't sure. She looks quite different as Farris compared to the other pictures I've seen of her.

Just finished season 2. It was great ! I feared it would be underwhelming after the first season, but it wasn't. New characters were interesting enough, and the dynamic between the kids still worked really well. I will wait for season 3, maybe the hardest part starts now, maintaining the level for three seasons in a row.

Anyone else catch the Paul Reiser "Aliens" nod with him watching a monitor nervously and then turning it off? Awesome stuff!

I noticed this but none of the write-ups I found online thus far caught it.  Glad I wasn't the only one.  When I saw it, I knew these guys were big fans and the rest of the season definitely was a love affair with Alien and Aliens.

There's also the shot of Hopper toward the end of the season in the government facility with the strobing lights on his face while he's outside a doorway that felt very much like Ripley in the halls of the Nostromo at the end of Alien.

It would be difficult to catalog all the homages.

For me it was unfocused and retreading. Here we go again with the main plot with Will again, and worried Will's Mom again, and the upside down again, and instead of lights on the wall and oooh ahhh we put drawings on the wall and oooh ahhh and instead of Mathew Modine now we have Paul Reiser and it just didn't feel fresh. I'm not saying it was awful, just suffering of sequelitis and not anywhere near as good as the first season for me. And I can do without the X-Kids too.

Rather generic, imo. But then, in all fairness to a show that relies heavily on cherry picking retro/nostalgic themes from the eighties, the villainy is in line with their agenda.

Was a bit concerned after the first episode, which was a bit slow for my liking, but thought it got better and better as it went along. Surprisingly dark (and gross) in places, and Maya Hawke is a very welcome addition as Robin. Would quite happily sit through a spin off featuring her, Steve and Dustin... :)

Very much enjoyed Stranger Things 3. Definitely better than 2 (I enjoyed 2 a lot but it also had some sophomore pitfalls) and perhaps even on par with the first season.

The show is definitely building towards an endgame now. I don't see it going beyond 5 seasons. Hell, I could even see 4 being the end.

Yep, much better than 2.  I still don't think the series is as good as everybody says it is..............but it is still my favorite series on netflix.

They need to change up the villian for the next season though.  While I like the comic book formula of having a recurring villian try new ways to beat the good guys, I also like the formula that introduces us to new ones (I did like the Russians as the minor badguys)

I really thought dude who played Billy gave an underrated performance this season.  You can see that his body is betraying the control of the mindflayer when he is under it's influence.

Will needs more screentime.

I probably wouldn't describe season two and three as 'overrated,' but otherwise that's where I stand on the series also. For me, season one is the stand out, and holds significantly higher replay value over the other two.

The word overrated is overrated. Never was crazy about that forum mantra. When I see it, the first question that pops in my mind is, where does that person see it's being overrated? Never once have I seen a source that confirms a movie or show is overrated.

I also dislike the regular overuse of the word "overated". More often than not its just a way of saying "I didn't like this as much as everyone else did", which doesn't make something overated. I've seen a lot of comments calling HoHH overated or worse even though I think its probably the best haunted house story of the last 20 years.

With Stranger Things its broadly popular because it's fun and full of nostalgia. This series has a lot of different monster film influences. This season I noticed a lot of The Thing, The Blob, The Terminator, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Which means there is a lot for me to love personally. It doesn't take itself too seriously either which makes it pretty easy to watch.

It's not my favorite show but its impossible for me not to enjoy the hell out of it. It's feels like its specifically created for someone my age and with my interests.

Yup, 100% agree. I even questioned someone in a forum once where is he seeing the movie discussed is overrated.

"But just look at IMDB! They have that movie rated at 8.5! That's overrated!"

No...it's members voted their enjoyment level (or whatever other criteria they use) for that movie, and that produced an average level of 8.5. That's 'rated'....not overrated. The only way it would be overrated there, is if members voted an 8.5 on average for a given movie, but IMDB admins displayed a 9.0 rating for that given movie. .........Then, it would be overrated.

His diversionary response, "you're a virgin who lives in his mother's basement."

So, the word Overrated (is now overrated ) has becomes old, tiresome and without imagination like Stranger Things 80's nostalgia? Ok then, Stranger Things is Overappreciated. I'm not going to explain why cos you guys are too biased for that.

Glad you enjoyed the show, though.

Touched a nerve I guess.

"over appreciated" "overrated" = "It's popular but I didnt enjoy it so the popular opinion is wrong."

What do I know though? I'm just biased because I enjoy the show   :P

I don't have a bias bone in my body!  :P

Seriously....while I'm not crazy about personally using the label overrated - unless in jest, I realize it's a popular figure of speech, albeit it holds no descriptive value. Much like.....'the worst movie ever!'

In my opinion, Stranger Things is like Star Wars: a really good movie, then the rest is overrated. I dig the haunting of hill house more.

I probably wouldn't describe season two and three as 'overrated,' but otherwise that's where I stand on the series also. For me, season one is the stand out, and holds significantly higher replay value over the other two.
I'm actually the opposite. I think ST has got better, and I think S3 is better than S2 is better than S1. I'm hoping that if there's an S4 it, continues the trend.

Quote from: TV LineAlthough a rep for the show declined to comment, sources confirm to TVLine exclusively that the Duffer Brothers are looking to cast four new male recurring roles, three of which are teenagers and one of which is an adult. The adolescent trio range from a metalhead to an entitled jock to a character that sounds an awful lot like the twin of Fast Times at Ridgemont High stoner Jeff Spicoli. The older guy, meanwhile, possesses characteristics that suggest that he will figure prominently in a certain storyline set far, far away from Hawkins.

Not having a primary character interacting with other primary characters.  That season would've been much better had Eleven been with the cast way earlier.

Quote from: IndieWireIn season two, Eleven goes into the basement of the cabin and there's five boxes, one of which has Brenner's stuff from Hawkins Lab, one of which says "Dad," one of which says "Vietnam." One says "New York." So there are these three things that we've established in the season that if we don't pay off, it means that they're bad writers. And the Duffer brothers are very good writers. So I know specifically that in Season 4 we will give you a big, huge reveal about Hopper's backstory. I'm so excited about revealing this aspect of the character. It's one of the things that I've known since the first frame of the first shot, and we haven't expressed it yet. And finally we're gonna express it in a big way. It's my favorite thing about him that you guys don't know about him yet, but it has to do with these backstories of New York, Vietnam, and Dad. And I'm really excited for you guys to know more about that. And it relates, of course, to things he's doing with Eleven and Joyce and things like that.

It's really really good, I'm up to Episode 5 and it's got those big Season 1 vibes, maybe even a bit better with the horror and violence.

Show of the year so far for me. The sequence with Max running to escape to the sound of Kate Bush was truly epic. I had to watch it twice

I watched S 1 to 4 because of the neverending hype
I liked it but S4 which seems to be the most popular is pretty darn longwinding. It had its moments but nobody can convince me it needed to be that long, previous seasons had the right length.
Some repetitive issues started coming up in S3, same for S4. Overall I like the characters and I enjoy all the references I see of older films.
