Title: Rumor Control: Emma Watson in Talks for Alien Remake via SundaySport
Post by: Corporal Hicks on Aug 10, 2020, 12:24:36 PM
So it's most likely gonna be a load of tosh, and I'm not planning to post on the front page given the source, but so people are aware it's been "reported".

QuoteHarry Potter stunna Emma Watson is set to take on another beloved franchise - starring in a remake of the Alien films. Emma, 30 , found fame as geeky Hermione in the schoolboy wizard movies and is now tipped to take over Sigourney Weaver as tough alien-killer Ripley.

The remake will see Watson travelling to an off-world colony that has been infested with the face hugging beasts who lay eggs which hatch out and invade human hosts. Emma plays an all-action version of Ripley, who has been cloned specifically to fight the aliens. It will be Emma's first action film and could set her on the way to being one of the best earning actresses of all time.

A Hollywood source said " There is a chance for Emma to catapult herself into the big time. Nothing has been set in stone but there is a lot of momentum behind this and if it all comes together it could be a huge hit. The last few attempts to reboot Alien have not worked out well but this back-to-basics screenplay about one woman versus aliens should definitely do the trick

Nothing against Emma, she's a safe choice, but I hate the term "remake" and the fact that she is supposed to be Ellen Ripley.

So first it's a remake, then later on it's referred to as a reboot. Which is it, remake or reboot?

It features "Ripley, who has been cloned to specifically to fight the aliens." So this new Ripley's origin is in the back story, as in, we don't get to see newRipley's origin for ourselves? Or does this story attach to the existing films and follow on from Resurrection? In which case, it's neither remake nor reboot, but a relaunch.

As a lead role in a sequel to 'ALIEN: Covenant'. Yeah. I'd believe that. Emma Watson could work in that. There's a wide open door leading into unknown territory deserving of further exploration and story.

But as a remake of 'ALIEN'..? ummm... er... Whut??? How? Why..?

Aside from the jank reporting, I'm not buying it until an official announcement is made.

There would be at least one 1% truth here if they were talking about Newt (or Amanda), but not about Ellen Ripley.

We don't see her origin. She doesn't know her origin, other than she's a clone. Clones like her shouldn't have memories, yet she keeps having flashbacks and dreams of a life she didn't live. Or did she?  Yada, yada, yada

So... a rehash of the Aeon Flux movie?

The emphasis seems to be on Emma playing an "all-action" "alien-killer." Whoever put this out (Emma Watson's publicist/agent/manager, hoping to attract some attention to their client, perhaps?) seems to be wanting Emma to catch the current wave of prominent super-heroine action movies. Possibly because there is a real action movie role in the offing - not Alien related - and they want to prime the studio into considering Emma for the part.

A fairly common ploy.

It does kinda sound like the dumb-ass shit that Disney would come up with.

And it would probably make a billion bucks.  :(

On the very remote off-chance that this isn't a load of tosh - I wonder if this could then be Walter Hill's Alien 5 pitch that Sigourney Weaver declined and that they subsequently offered to Emma Watson?

But then again, can't imagine them offering Weaver an action heavy role better suited to a 30 year old.

Damn, my beloved franchise is getting worse and worse, and yes I can see disney easily do this and what I read in that text sounds similair to what they did with star wars: Half remake and half reboot to milk the franchise on money and nostalgia from fans and people who have heard about the alien franchise and will go and watch it with massive pr assault from disney:

Cloning ripley could easily work in the time frame of the old series, lets make an short and easy story: 100 years after alien resurrection weyland yutani has managed to come back and has now perfected the cloning process and have cloned ripley and several copies of her and moved the aliens to their science colonies and research ships, one of the ripley clones manages in a power blackout emerge and wake up and ends up battling the aliens onboard in a mix of action and horror with her and 2 others try to clear the ship from the aliens onboard. They in the end manage to suck out the alien queen and her hive with the airlock and then sets course to a colony which has sent a distress call.

Sigh, when I read that text and they are going for a female action hero and how they will pr it as the first female rambo and the ideas presented makes it sound like some of the worse comics tried to make ripley: ultimate alien killer and goes on adventures wiping out xenos left and right and make them seem like dumb insects.

And with disneys statement they wont release alien dvds blurays, material releases its clear they will milk the alien franchise and do what they did with star wars.
Some will love this but it ruins the franchise to me :(

Probably a bullshit article.. but if the ever give us another Alien film I want a Male lead this time. As for Emma Watson ive only seen her in the Harry Potter films. It would be interesting, to see her tackle an Alien film. If Kristen Stewart can manage to give us a decent character in Underwater then I'm sure Emma Watson can manage something similar.

Petite.

Yeah, I mean no disrespect to Sigourney weaver by saying this, but she had like a grizzled face imo, she looks like she can f**k you up, Watson is about as intimidating as the human alien hybrid from ressurection
Title: Re: Rumor Control: Emma Watson in Talks for Alien Remake via SundaySport

Sigourney is 7" taller than Watson.

I like Watson as an actress, but she would have to destroy the Aliens with her brain to be convincing.  Ripley actually looked convincing in the warrior role because she was as tall as her male co-stars and heavier than most of her female ones.
Title: Re: Rumor Control: Emma Watson in Talks for Alien Remake via SundaySport

I never paid attention to Ripley's height in any movie, didn't knew that... made a difference to some.
Title: Re: Rumor Control: Emma Watson in Talks for Alien Remake via SundaySport
Post by: Kimarhi on Aug 11, 2020, 02:09:04 AM
They never had frame shots in a way to get her the same height as her co stars because Weaver is 6'.  I think in some of her roles she's actually bigger than some of her co stars.

I'm not saying shes physically imposing, just that she looks like somebody who could run around and unleash hell without passing out from over work halfway through the action sequence.

Scarlett is much thicker than Watson.

BUT it is all about presentation.  I would be skeptical of her as a cloned Alien killer until a movie came out that was good enough to prove otherwise.

I mean they could do that TX style terminator female archetype where she's super lean and unintimidating until she does something and just comes out of nowhere with brutality.

Again though. Don't think it would work she's just not intimidating, I think if she tried to be it would come off funny or humorous.

Doesn't matter. It's all about who you're casted against. Look at Sylvester Stallone, the man is 5 foot 7 (even though his reps and shoe lifts have tried selling him as taller throughout the years), but if you're cast against actors of equal height or shorter, you still look tall.

And speaking of lifts....

Calling people by their surname is big for military and some team situations. At my last job I was always referred to by my last name because there were multiple people with the same first name.
In the case of Alien, it probably has more to do with the fact that Ripley sounds more prominent than calling her Ellen.

I agree with moving past Ripley's story and steering clear of the cloning concept. I'd rather see them go in the direction of Alien Isolation's story.

Yeah, this description definitely feels less "remake" (as in, what King Kong '05 is to King Kong '33) and more either "reboot" (what Kong: Skull Island is to King Kong '33) or partial sequel (what Terminator: Dark Fate to The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day).

Though it does also leave open the possibility, since it does involve a clone, that it could be totally in-continuity with everything that already exists and be set after Alien: Resurrection.

All that being said, I feel kind of silly putting even this limited amount of thinking into a poorly written article from a tabloid. :D

Not interested in a reboot nor remake of ALIEN. As far as I'm concerned, the film is as close to perfection as humanly possible. But, if this film does get made, I hope it leads to the rest of the films being released in a lavish 4K set.

Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, is irreplaceable.

Ridley Scott kind of explained this. The Characters of ALIEN are normal and low level people so low level tech makes sense. The Characters of PROMETHEUS are Billionaires so High Level Tech makes sense

Give me 4K Fantasia or give me death*

*not actual death, just ... metaphorical death. Like ennui or something.
Give me 4K 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954).

It still dont explain how prometheus has way more advanced technology than the common person 150 years later on in aliens and another 350 for auriga in alien resurrection, that would be like someone in the 1700s has still to this day better technology than I have in my home....

If they do new movies and as its disney and what they did in star wars: they probably will stick to using the old technology stuff that we´ve seen in alien and aliens/alien3.
Love in star wars the new sequel that the computers still run the same system and graphics :P

Yeah. Change the technological design is one of the worst ideas ever. Alien, Isolation, S, Cube are perfect examples of retro-futurism.
But I don't think it's worth worrying about. As horrible as Disney's Star Wars was, they kept the technological map of the OT. So I'm more than sure - there is no need to worry about the visual style.

Making the Sequel Trilogy look exactly like the OT was one of the most boring choices in the films. The Prequels, love em or hate em, gave us a grand tapestry of new tech that we slowly watched devolve into the aesthetic of the Imperial era over the course of three films.

And then when we got to the Sequels, set 30 years after the original trilogy and set in a time when the New Republic is now in charge of the Galaxy... everything just looks exactly the same as what it was after the Empire squeezed the life out of everything? With the same old X-Wings and TIE Fighters zipping around?

Canto Bight is the only planet in the trilogy that visually seemed to progress the story past the fall of the Empire.

It's not about that, but about the fact that if Disney decides to keep the visual style of the classic Alien, they will do it flawlessly.

And, starting with AR, the return of the classic style is what the franchise needs. Enough odious experiments!

On the contrary, Alien works best when delving into the uncomfortable. ;)

While it would be nice to see the "used future" aesthetic make a return, I hope Disney doesn't follow it too slavishly like they did with the Star Wars sequels. Does anyone want to see a carbon copy of the Nostromo? It's been done, and it was done brilliantly the first time. Vincent Ward's wooden planet idea for Alien3 may have pushed the envelope out too far, but that's better than dialling it right back imho.

I'd like to see lots of different sequels to Aliens.  Each attempt could be something different.

So more or less continue what Fox was doing.

No, I mean sequels that directly connect to the film Aliens.  Spin it in different ways and see what sticks.  I know the suggestion is unrealistic but it would be fun.  We've already had a few post-Aliens series such as the original DH run, the Alien 3 film, and the recently released Gibson series.  I enjoy all the different takes on what could happen post-Aliens.

I realize that most likely these could take place in comics.  There is also the possibility of doing one good film Rey-con of Alien 3, but there is no guarantee that it will be better.

I'd rather just see different filmmakers come in and do standalones rather than just see an endless loop of unrelated sequels to one movie from the middle of the franchise.

^This, new standalone movies with new charachters and new places and doing new things, but also sticking to the world of aliens and correct retro future designs based on alien-alien3 lore.

The problem with stand alones is explaining what's going on to the characters leading to long expository passages, which the audience is already all over.

Having Ripley in the sequels means dealing with that in a very short few passages of dialogue.

I don't think it necessarily think standalone means we have to be picking up with them at the start of something where we're ahead of them. Standalones can pick up the situation on the run so we can avoid the dull part where the characters catch up to us.

Honestly, that kind of thing seems perfectly reasonable to me now. I still see Windows XP machines in use in some corners of my business. I see all sorts of antiquated shit.

There are ways you could do it, without standing around having a chat, but you can't assume the audience has seen an Alien film before.

After a while you can.

See also, Marvel really not giving a shit if you don't understand a scene because you didn't see one of the last six movies.

They generally tell a self contained story though that doesn't mean you have to have watched everything else. At some point in an Alien flick some one has to explain how the life cycle works and the sooner the better.

Even when they made Alien 3 they had to keep adding stuff to explain where the Alien came from, based on audience feedback.

Agreed. While I think there's still creative ways you can continue with the protagonists being less informed than the audience, this path can absolutely work too, while still informing new audience what's going on.  Colonial Marines are in firefight. Booms and Ratatatats aplenty.  Weird spider-hand-like creature jumps on one of the Marines' faces. New audience member wonders what's up with that? Marine yells "HE'S BEING IMPREGNATED!!" Eww, okay I get it. A simplistic example of using brief explanations through dialogue without bogging down with life cycle explanations that fans know it a million times over.

I'm not sure if Watson would be the right choice. Winona Ryder felt off before and now her? Maybe it's just me, but she's too small and looks too young, like 19? Can't believe she is 30 already.  :-\

Just pick Brienne of f :-X :-X :-X Tarth.
