Quote from: Obsidian community's global moderatorHi guys, The Guildmaster here. Rumors have circled around a bit regarding the fate of the Aliens role playing game that Obsidian and SEGA had been working on. Unfortunately, it is true that we are no longer working on the game, and we wanted to finally announce that officially to everyone who has been following its development. We're going to keep this forum up for another week for archival purposes and to allow you guys to finish up any open threads, and then we will shut it down since it is no longer a product that is in development.
All of us here at Obsidian would like to thank you for your interest and support during its development, and we encourage you to check out the recent news about Alpha Protocol, which is coming to the PC, Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3 very soon!
Thanks,
-TG
Quote from: Sega PRAt this point, SEGA has no plans to move forward with the Aliens RPG. The Aliens franchise offers us so much content to choose from that we feel it important to take a step back and carefully consider the type of game we want to release. We plan to continue working with the Aliens franchise and ask fans to be patient and stay tuned for more information about what SEGA has coming out for the Aliens series of games, starting with the upcoming Alien vs. Predator game. We are very excited about and focused on Alien vs. Predator, which promises gamers a fantastic single player game and an equally compelling multiplayer experience. We are confident that it provides all the excitement and fun that the Aliens and Predator fans are looking for!
f**k f**k f**k f**k shit shit balls balls balls.
I want the real reason!
I hate when they say things like "At this point (...)".
I had the hope that SEGA eventually will pick it up even when we know It wasn't being worked on atm. The time-line of tittles was long enough to get this done after AP and some infos were pointing it in that way but sadly It's what it seems this time.
If this is real, then I can't tell you how sad this makes me.
Can't say I'm surprised. I wish we'd have seen some footage or actual screenshots first.
Don't care about this game. Let's keep the FPS games going. :)
LONG LIVE ACM !

Really, really sad, although as has been said, not terribly surprising.
Obsidian are such an underrated developer - KOTOR2 was much better than the original game, and could have been an order of magnitude better if LucasArts had allowed them more than a freaking year and a half of development time.
They could really have done this game justice, and an RPG is a fresh, original take on the franchise. As much as I'm looking forward to Rebellion's AvP3, we've already had plenty of shooters.
Not shocking, but this kinda sucks.
Yeah, but we kinda knew it was gonna get canned. To be honest though, from when I first heard about it I've never really gotten my head around it. I just couldn't see how they were gonna make that kind of game work in the Aliens Universe.

I agree. It would be nice if they released some of what they have up to this point, so we could see where they were going with it.
just (hopefully) mod AVP3 into an RPG experience ;)
Well, yeah, an RPG is an odd genre for the franchise. Just like RTS and Extinction was.
This is awful. Why are they going with the Shooters over this? To be honest, I will not get the satisfaction I want out of AvP 3, which looks to be the only game that will come out (I still have doubts about A:CM and this new news isn't helping). Shooters can be great, but no matter what they do, they will never match a good RPG.
The FPS genre is what made the series so great in the first place. Even today, people are still playing AvP2 despite them closing down all the servers.
Do you still play it Darkness?
Sad that I won't be able to play this, but I'm not too sad since AVP and Colonial Marines are still coming out.

I just installed AvP2 again actually but I haven't played online.
I installed all my AVP games 1 and 2 and the primal hunt :P had to be done
I'm not trying to be a dip,but I think this would've been mediocre at best if it was put out......like Extinction.

To get my AVP1:GOLD to run on XP i have to install a special driver it it runs properly or it dosent work at all...cant even find my disc either now. In the mood for a good skirmish.
Huh. I spend 4 days in another country... and I get back home only to discover this news.
:(
I've never been a fan of RPG's but I was imagining that this game would be the one to draw my interest into the genre.
But if I had to pick one game of the current bunch to be canceled, this is the one I would pick. I agree with the others that prefer FPS games for the Alien franchise. The games I want released in order of preference are:
1. A:CM (Xbox 360)
2. AvP3 (Xbox 360)
3. A:CM (NDS)
Note: I recall reading that Sega had a deal to only release three Alien games from Fox. It makes sense that the two of them would be FPS because thats where the money has always been with this franchise historically. The DS game makes sense because the user base for the system is huge.
Not surprised at all. I would like to get Alien related RTS for PC. That would be interesting.
would have been a wicked game . but at least we still have Avp and Acm but an RPG alien game would be great to. Dam !
I'm not sure. The concept art looked amazing, but the end result is no one payed any care to it. They all focussed on A:CM and AVP3. I mean, you can see by what they wrote on multiple commentaries how deadlines were not being met.
How sad would it be if s game wa snot sent out because they had a lazy developer?
I still would have liked 3 titles on ALIEN in the upcoming years, but to be honest they wouldn't have made a killing. A: CM and AVP3 will stack the change and Crucible would be the runt of the pack.
I can't blame them for shutting it down all together.
Hopefully they take those amazing concept creations and put them to maybe a game to reflect the ALien prequal when it comes out.
I agree, all is not lost for them. They can reuse the ideas and concepts for another game.

Game over man, game over!
I'm sorry I couldn't help myself but it does indeed suck balls that it was canned. I think a Dead Space-esque RPG based on the Aliens universe would have been awesome. Alas, it is not to be.
But two out of three ain't bad.
I am a bit upset about this one being canned. I could feel it coming but its still too bad to know. I was not too impressed as playing an RPG Marine. I would much rather play as an RPG Xenomorph getting stronger and becoming a powerful weapon in its Hive.

Yeah, I expect them to re-use them when it comes time for games off of the films. I bet they will use some of them for the ALien Prequal game; if they make one of them. ;)
It is a shame that all that work went into the game, but I heard SEGA lost somethingl like $200 mill and had to cut back on some projects and Crucible wasn't filling it's shoes anyway. Still I woudl have liked to see how they made an Alien RPG, even if it IS an RPG. :-\
man it sucks they cacelled it but it seemed like it was going to happen, they might revive it later on like they did with aliens cm but not for a good period of time

No,that's why its
cancelled.
Aliens:CM was never announced as being officially cancelled.
Never liked the idea of an Alien rpg sounds dumb besides AVP 3 and ACM would have owned it.
Its just me, but I thought the RPG would have rocked. I'm actually more of a FPS fan then a RPG one, but the RPG would have added something new and different to the series.
I agree. Obviously, there was a lot of room for suck, but Obsidian is a great developer. If anyone could have made it work, it would have been them.
As far as legitimizing the Kenner designs, frankly, I get a little tired of people saying that its a bad thing because its 'ridiculous'. How is it ridiculous? 'Because its ridiculous'. Well, but...why? How are you coming to this conclusion. It just comes down to people panning something that no one outside of Obsidian really knows anything about.

I'm not too sure how I feel about the crazy designs for the Aliens, but who iknows? They may have actually worked.

The 2001 Aliens: Colonial Marines that hes talking about sure as hell did
I think judging by the screenshots for Crucible though it would of dethroned any fear aliens generate, you would of got too used to them and the many types there were.
It would've only worked if the Aliens were advanced enemies, and most of the game was spent skirmishing with other humans trying to survive in an Alien-dominated world.
Part of me is upset that this was canceled (it was, after all, an Alien game, and it would have added something new to the franchise), but another part of me is glad (some of those designs were horrible, and there would be plenty of opportunity to make it a bad game).
You have to remember those designs were only concept. I am sure they will someday decide to make an ALIENS RPG. But probably not any time soon since we will soon have AvP3 and then A:CM will start to shine. If they do have plans maybe we will hear about them in 2012.

Damn. And I was hoping that I'd see an Aliens RPG
before the world ended...
Don't worry. It doesn't end until late 2012.
i am depressed now about that, always wanted to see an alien rpg even if it didn't work out.
the concept art of this game is perfect and that'a really a pity to hear its cancellation...

oh i forgot to mention that the concept art design is good except those taking-traits-from-whatever aliens !!!
You remembered something which was discussed 2 years ago? Nice...
