Title: Forum Upgraded To SMF 2.1
Post by: Darkness on Apr 27, 2022, 05:32:06 PM
The forum will be upgraded to SMF 2.1 this Sunday so expect some downtime. It's the first big release really of SMF since 2.0 was released 11 years ago. All the newer themes have had to be ported from scratch but I'm afraid for those of you still on the old legacy themes, this is the point to get rid of those themes altogether.

I've tried to keep things as close as possible to the current themes but the biggest change is the header where pms and alerts can be accessed through menus.

The main new features:

-Better mobile layout.

-Time Zones - It actually takes Daylight Savings Time into account.

-Drafts - Autosaving of PMs and Posts and you can reselect them. Definitely a feature I wanted.

-New Post Editor with new emoticons. The WYSWYG editor is actually quite good if you don't want to use BBCode.

-Attached Images can be now placed anywhere in the post. They still appear at the bottom of the post if you haven't inserted them manually.

-Mentions - You can use @Darkness in a post which sends an alert to the member.

-Likes - This replaces the Karma system. We never used Karma before as I never really thought it was fair to give people permanent dislikes. There is no dislike option here and it's related to the post rather than the member. I do like on other forums that you can give posts a like. You might not have anything to add to the topic, but it might be worth giving a user's post a like to say you agree. We'll give the Likes system a go and see if it's worthwhile.

-Alerts system - This is the biggest feature. Things like mentions, when somebody quotes you, when a user likes your post, posts from boards and topics you're following. You can receive real-time notifications too even if you're not on the website. This can be all customized as to what you're alerted to.

There's many more little bits that have been changed. One important change is that PMs now require you to write a subject.

You will be logged out and will be required to log back in. If you can't remember your password, you can request a password reset here: https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/index.php?action=reminder

Yeah, like I said, if nobody uses it, we can get rid of it. I just think every forum I go to nowadays has a Likes and Reactions feature. Before Facebook did it, it would have been unthinkable to add something like that but it's become pretty much standard now.

Any chance of allowing members to make multiple posts right after each other on a single thread without having to wait 24hrs?

Because those of us doing regular updates on the film board basically have to copy the old post, delete it, then make another post, paste the deleted post's text again along with the new updated info,  in order to bumb it so others can see it's been updated. It's all a bit of a schlep.

Some members don't even bother with that, so one is not always aware a post has been updated by the same member that last posted.

We can do that now. How many hours do you think it should be? I always thought 24 was a decent number. It still marks the threads as unread for users if a post is auto merged but yes, it doesn't show up in people's Unread Posts.

You shouldn't ought to be having to do that. That's why the Merge thing was added - so people wouldn't have to do that.

Yeah, admin and mods can currently do it. If you take for example the Alien Day thread:

https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/index.php?topic=65547.45

Hicks was constantly updating it throughout the day and you could see each time he posted something new because the thread got bumbed and time- stamped without him having to wait 24hrs to post again or for someone to reply below his last post.

So basically no wait period to post again in order to prevent auto-merging with the last post.

With regards to the "like" feature, I think it's a nice way of acknowledging an interesting post without needing to post a reply yourself. It's just a polite nod to the member who posted it, not a popularity contest or anything like that.

This may just be a transitional issue with the change. The personal text that shows up under the Avatar is not working. I usually post a quote related to the Avatar.  :)

Yeah, Admins and Mods were always excluded. I get it for things like that where it's busy with news item after item but it's rare we get days like that. I'll reduce it though.

If you're reading this, the forum has now been upgraded to SMF 2.1.

Feel free to report any issues. Especially if any colours look a bit out of place on the themes. I've tried to check as much as I can.

I mostly like the new changes with exceptions: I don't like that you can't see avatars on mobile, or the large spaces between images on mobile, critically having two different profile drop down menus (the ones with log out options present) I think's needlessly complicated, and finally marking forums read being part of a drop down menu with no other options I think's kinda pointless.

Yeah, that's one of the changes they made. I had mixed feelings about the avatars too. But then thought, people on capped/slow mobile plans aren't going to be wanting to download avatars. I might change it back if people really want it.

Quoteor the large spaces between images on mobile

Have you got a post example?

Quotecritically having two different profile drop down menus (the ones with log out options present) I think's needlessly complicated

Oh, you mean in the header. That one is mine from the homepage. I knew it was duplicating what was already on the forum but just kept in there for consistency. I could have somehow tried to move the forum one to the top but it just would have got too complicated as it wasn't my menu.

Here's an example of images acting strangely for me anyway.

And Avatars are only 100x100 though, even someone on shoestring internet ought to be able to afford to see them.

Also the header's ability to log in's broken.

And not being able to go to the most recent post in a thread directly's anymore's a downgrade.

I'd like the avatars back on mobile. It makes it easier to read through threads and see who's posting.

I understand, and appreciate that effort, but it's more the absence of old features rather than the addition of new ones I think people are griping about honestly.

Anyway, I'm mostly ok with this update, just that on phone mainly I prefered the old theme I had but on my PC the current one looks fine.

The Alerts system, getting a notification if someone quotes and replies is something I missed having here. As sometimes someone would reply to me and I wouldn't know and only reply weeks or months later. The alerts might make me not miss that this time.

I don't like the new look tbh. Can we have a feature to use the old version/skin?

Maybe it's my eyes. But everything feels really stretched and narrow. (I'm running on 1920x1080) So i doubt it's the resolution. Like i said, everything feels too elongated. Also my signature is now cut off at the bottom further indication a more narrower picture to me, Losing signature space is a big negative imo. Since now i further have to adjust my signature sizes going forward with limits the space i can create stuff within.

I like some of the features. But my biggest two criticisms are 1) I liked the old color design/skin more. 2) Everything feels stretched or too rectangle/long etc. 3) I don't like the inclusion of a *like* button. This isn't twitter. I think disagreements or agreements on a forum should be discussed not just up voted or down voted. People have posted a lot of unpopular opinions on here. And it's always fun to read them. But like i said introducing a like or dislike button is just gonna cause people to spam it on things they agree or disagree on.

Hope to see tweaks and stuff tho. Always good to see forum updates (even if i liked the old one more)

I mostly like the update.

Quick Reply is nice. I also like the alerts and like function.

The mobile header feels unnecessarily complicated compared to how it used to be, and for some reason some thread titles are twice the size of others. It also zooms in when I go to reply and starts to cut off the right side sometimes.

It's better on desktop for me than mobile, but I feel it's mostly just adjusting to the new design. There's nothing much functional about it I dislike.

New site is fugly. Doesn't surprise me though, I've been a part of numerous forums over the years and never known an "upgrade" that has actually make them better.

Maybe it's just that I'm using a pretty small laptop, or maybe that you need a truly huge font size, but I have to zoom to what feels to me, far too big to read easily before it cuts off. I hope there's a way to resolve it without some huge pain in the ass though.

It's not like years gone by where we've made a new theme and kept the old ones. It's a major forum update and all the themes had to be recreated from scratch due to the significant changes. That's why all the old themes were removed completely. They were too out of date to port over. I tried to keep things as close as possible.

Yes, that's why everybody hated Karma and it was changed. I remember when Alien Experience had it and people were trying to team up with other people to give people they didn't like, numerous dislikes. I think it's more suited to the homepage comments. I do think it's interesting on places like Eurogamer where you can downgrade comments and if they get too many, they are simply hidden. Like I said, I'm testing the water. There's no dislike option here so I'm hoping there won't be any of that happening.

Quote from: SiL on May 02, 2022, 01:02:07 AMThe mobile header feels unnecessarily complicated compared to how it used to be,

Okay, I've got rid of the messages/alerts box on mobile. I can see how it looks a bit busy to have both the forum one and my header one. It still shows when you've got new pms and alerts but it's not as fancy as the forum one where it opens up and shows which ones you have. Ideally, I'd like to have the forum one in a collapsible box that is maybe hidden by default.

QuoteI don't like the inclusion of a *like* button.

Yes, that's why everybody hated Karma and it was changed. I remember when Alien Experience had it and people were trying to team up with other people to give people they didn't like, numerous dislikes.I think it's more suited to the homepage comments.

Quoteand for some reason some thread titles are twice the size of others. It also zooms in when I go to reply and starts to cut off the right side sometimes.

Is title sizes wrong on the Thread display?

Quote from: BlueMarsalis79 on May 02, 2022, 09:08:20 AMDon't know if it's intentional but YouTube links also no longer embed a video on mobile.

Have you got a topic example? The way youtube embedding has changed too because it's part of the bbcode in the post editor. So I've tried to hook into that instead of using a separate mod.

QuoteI don't like that you can't see avatars on mobile,

QuoteStill curiously not an option when using new replies or unread posts.

Okay, added them and avatars are back. I've altered the boardindex to get rid of board description.

Quote from: Local Trouble on May 01, 2022, 06:34:20 PMToo bad I can't resize the fonts to make the site readable.

Do you mean you're using the Accessibility options in your phone browser to make text bigger generally? Which fonts do you feel are too small? I've tried to keep things a similar size as before.

Well i appreciate you listening to the feedback! Especially regarding the signatures.

Honestly I didn't mind the previous look but what's been done for mobile and desktop is neat.

Alerts is my favourite new feature, and makes keeping up with conversations so much easier. I like the "likes" feature if only because people going "I agree" does not a conversation make and so streamlines that aspect.

It's definitely functioning better after all this feedback. Looks a lot nicer.

I'm curious what the attached signifies though? I'm wondering if I missed that on the old iterations.

Looks like the icons for the boards not loading. That's what I see there on mine.

Fixed the missing images.

Yeah, I'll be making a few more changes. I feel like the Last Post By should be on the MessageIndex in mobile instead of the Topic Started By.

@Darkness on desktop it appears that one can no longer click on a large image embedded within a post, in order to make it bigger.

Here's two examples:

Made some updates this morning.

Added collapsible blocks for the login info and news headlines on mobile and the login info is hidden by default.
Added last post info to messageindex on mobile.

Yeah, that's another change they made for some reason.  ::)  Widths and heights aren't saved anymore when you add an image. It does make it clickable if you've actually specified a width and height in the bbcode. It's hard to get the widths until you've downloaded it. I've got around it, I think and it seems to be working.

I don't know if any other members experience such problems but I can't post instagram links as I used to by just copypasting the link and cutting that part in the end. They either just dissappear or don't show up properly. Can something be done about it, please ?

Yeah, it's the merging that causes it. If you quick edit the merged post and then save, it fixes it.

I'll have to look into that.

Okay, I think I fixed it. New Merged posts shouldn't have that issue.

On the topic of merging, I can't seem to manually merge posts anymore. Has the option moved somewhere different?
